Now the latest from the Look North newsroom. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Claims from some East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire MPs | :00:00. | :00:08.
that Brexit will be the big issue in the general election. | :00:09. | :00:13.
What I'm going after and what my party's going after in this election | :00:14. | :00:16.
are those Labour voters who voted to leave in huge numbers | :00:17. | :00:19.
in our area, and who have been let down | :00:20. | :00:21.
by their local Labour MPs on this issue. | :00:22. | :00:25.
Lincolnshire MP Nick Boles, who is having treatment for cancer, | :00:26. | :00:27.
says he will stand in the general election. | :00:28. | :00:31.
German engineering giant Siemens commits to Lincoln | :00:32. | :00:35.
And don't forget to join me for the updated weather forecast. | :00:36. | :00:42.
Several East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire MPs say Brexit | :00:43. | :00:56.
will be the most fought-over issue in the next seven weeks | :00:57. | :01:00.
of campaigning before the general election. | :01:01. | :01:03.
One, Andrew Percy, says the Conservatives | :01:04. | :01:05.
will try to win over Labour voters who want out of Europe. | :01:06. | :01:08.
Another Lincolnshire Conservative MP, Nick Boles, | :01:09. | :01:13.
confirmed today he would be standing for re-election. | :01:14. | :01:18.
More from our political editor, Tim Iredale. | :01:19. | :01:22.
Nick Boles revealed last year that doctors had found | :01:23. | :01:24.
In recent weeks, he hasn't played an active role in politics, | :01:25. | :01:29.
to vote in favour of triggering Brexit in Parliament. | :01:30. | :01:35.
Today he revealed he'd completed his final treatment | :01:36. | :01:37.
Order! Order! | :01:38. | :01:58.
None of our MPs opposed plans for a snap election | :01:59. | :02:01.
The only one of our sitting MPs to announce they won't be | :02:02. | :02:07.
standing again is Alan Johnson, and there's a growing list of names | :02:08. | :02:10.
hoping to replace him in Hull West and Hessle. | :02:11. | :02:15.
Meanwhile, Ukip's Mike Hookem - who was famously involved | :02:16. | :02:17.
in an altercation with a fellow MEP - | :02:18. | :02:20.
says he wants to be the party's candidate in Grimsby. | :02:21. | :02:24.
because Theresa May says she wants a bigger mandate | :02:25. | :02:27.
to deliver Britain's exit from the European Union. | :02:28. | :02:30.
But amongst our MPs, opinion is divided on whether Brexit | :02:31. | :02:34.
will be the dominant issue of the campaign. | :02:35. | :02:38.
We are going to make, in some ways, | :02:39. | :02:40.
the most difficult negotiation in our lifetimes. | :02:41. | :02:43.
It's incredibly important that the people are behind that. | :02:44. | :02:47.
People will be looking at a general election more than Brexit. | :02:48. | :02:49.
They will be looking at the fact that, | :02:50. | :02:52.
we are seeing cuts to our local schools in Hull. | :02:53. | :02:55.
We are seeing the local NHS in crisis. | :02:56. | :02:58.
And spare a thought for the thousands of activists | :02:59. | :03:01.
working for all the political parties that have been thrust | :03:02. | :03:03.
into a snap election campaign with no notice. | :03:04. | :03:06.
We weren't expecting a general election to be called. | :03:07. | :03:09.
Well, only really a week or so, ten days maybe, | :03:10. | :03:16.
to sort out all the issues around | :03:17. | :03:18.
getting an election in hand and under way - | :03:19. | :03:23.
all the volunteers ready to help out and everything else. | :03:24. | :03:29.
So this is what we can expect over the next few weeks - | :03:30. | :03:32.
leaflets stuffed through the letterbox, | :03:33. | :03:34.
all from candidates who want to vote. | :03:35. | :03:42.
I asked the Conservative MP for Brigg and Goole, Andrew Percy, | :03:43. | :03:44.
if he thought people in his area would be happy | :03:45. | :03:47.
Well I think, actually, people will relish the chance | :03:48. | :03:54.
and opportunity to vote on the nature of the next few years, | :03:55. | :03:57.
also importantly on those Brexit negotiations. | :03:58. | :04:02.
who voted really strongly to leave the European Union, | :04:03. | :04:07.
want the Prime Minister to have a strong hand | :04:08. | :04:10.
Unfortunately, the Labour Party, the Liberals are trying | :04:11. | :04:13.
The Prime Minister says there is division, | :04:14. | :04:17.
but everything you've wanted so far, you've got through. | :04:18. | :04:19.
The House of Lords, which is unelected, on the very | :04:20. | :04:25.
simple piece of legislation to simply say the Prime Minister | :04:26. | :04:28.
has the right to invoke the referendum decision, | :04:29. | :04:30.
That was on a really simple piece of legislation. | :04:31. | :04:34.
We've got a lot more more complicated votes coming, | :04:35. | :04:37.
that the House of Lords, Labour and the Liberal Democrats | :04:38. | :04:42.
are going to try and thwart the will of the people, | :04:43. | :04:44.
the people of our area especially, and make this really difficult. | :04:45. | :04:47.
We have to strengthen the Prime Minister's hand | :04:48. | :04:49.
If you are a traditional Conservative voter | :04:50. | :04:54.
in your constituency, but you wants to remain, | :04:55. | :04:56.
then you are not going to vote for you now. | :04:57. | :04:58.
You're going to vote Lib Dem, aren't you? | :04:59. | :05:00.
Well, I mean, the result in my constituency | :05:01. | :05:02.
The polling is very clear that most people who are Conservatives | :05:03. | :05:11.
who voted remain have accepted the result, | :05:12. | :05:13.
and just want the Government to get on with it. | :05:14. | :05:17.
Remain voters understand that the Prime Minister has | :05:18. | :05:19.
to have a strong hand to get them the best deal for Britain, | :05:20. | :05:22.
otherwise we will be disadvantaged versus the EU. | :05:23. | :05:25.
What I'm going after, and what my party's going after | :05:26. | :05:27.
in this election are those Labour voters who voted to leave | :05:28. | :05:30.
in huge numbers in our area, and who have been let down | :05:31. | :05:33.
by their local Labour MPs on this issue. | :05:34. | :05:35.
In your constituency, you have a majority of over 11,000. | :05:36. | :05:38.
I assume that you are standing again. | :05:39. | :05:40.
Well, it's for the parties to decide who the candidates will be, | :05:41. | :05:45.
and we will see that in the next week or so. | :05:46. | :05:48.
Are you wanting to stand again, though? | :05:49. | :05:51.
That's a question for the local parties to determine. | :05:52. | :05:54.
What I'm absolutely determined for is I will be out on the stump, | :05:55. | :05:57.
absolutely campaigning for the Conservatives to win this election | :05:58. | :05:59.
so the Prime Minister has a clear mandate. | :06:00. | :06:03.
You would like to be the MP for Brigg and Goole again, would you? | :06:04. | :06:07.
That is a matter for the local party. | :06:08. | :06:10.
I'm not going to have the conversation with the Look North | :06:11. | :06:12.
ahead of having a conversation with my party. | :06:13. | :06:14.
No, I'm just asking you if you would like to be. | :06:15. | :06:16.
This decision was dropped on us very shortly | :06:17. | :06:20.
I think the conversations about who would be the candidates, | :06:21. | :06:24.
out of respect for my local party, have to take place with the local | :06:25. | :06:27.
However good you are as a programme, Peter. | :06:28. | :06:30.
Mr Percy, very good to talk to you, as always. | :06:31. | :06:33.
Humberside Police want help to find a missing teenager from Hull. | :06:34. | :06:42.
15-year-old Ben Edmonds hasn't been seen | :06:43. | :06:47.
since leaving his home on Sunday afternoon. | :06:48. | :06:48.
Police say they're worried because of his age, | :06:49. | :06:50.
and are asking anyone with information to come forward. | :06:51. | :07:01.
A woman is NA critical but stable condition in hospital following a | :07:02. | :07:06.
fire in Skegness. There's been a large | :07:07. | :07:10.
fire at the former Allerthorpe Park golf course, | :07:11. | :07:12.
near Pocklington in East Yorkshire. The roof of a barn | :07:13. | :07:14.
containing lawnmowers and agricultural | :07:15. | :07:16.
machinery collapsed. The German engineering giant Siemens | :07:17. | :07:17.
has made a ?35 million commitment The company is expanding its gas | :07:18. | :07:21.
turbine business at Teal Park. Peter, this is a strong indication | :07:22. | :07:29.
of commitment from Siemens This is one of the largest private | :07:30. | :07:38.
employers in Lincoln, But there's been a lot of talk | :07:39. | :07:43.
about the impact of the Brexit vote, so to hear of more investment | :07:44. | :07:50.
will be welcome news for many. So today they've | :07:51. | :07:54.
announced a ?35 million expansion of their gas turbine | :07:55. | :07:56.
business at Teal Park A gas turbine would be | :07:57. | :07:59.
used in a power plant This money will create a service | :08:00. | :08:03.
centre for the turbines. They also intend to relocate | :08:04. | :08:08.
a storage facility to the new site, They hope to start building | :08:09. | :08:12.
next month, with work completed | :08:13. | :08:16.
by spring of next year, and they say it will | :08:17. | :08:20.
safeguard jobs in the city. The team which runs Hornsea's | :08:21. | :08:26.
independent lifeboat say a new tractor to get the boat | :08:27. | :08:29.
in and out of the water It was bought with | :08:30. | :08:33.
a ?96,000 donation and replaces | :08:34. | :08:37.
a number of decades old tractors that were struggling to cope with | :08:38. | :08:40.
driving in and out of the North Sea. Yeah, we were called to a dive boat | :08:41. | :08:45.
that was quite a long way out and the sea conditions | :08:46. | :08:48.
were not favourable. We were out there, rapid response, | :08:49. | :08:52.
and she's already saved lives. It's absolutely vital, | :08:53. | :08:55.
it brings us in line with all the other search | :08:56. | :08:57.
and rescue organisations. It's a lot safer, and it's built | :08:58. | :08:59.
specifically for the job of launching the lifeboat | :09:00. | :09:02.
in all weather conditions. The Lego daffodils in Hull city | :09:03. | :09:10.
centre that were sold off yesterday People queued for hours | :09:11. | :09:13.
to get one of the flowers, which were on display | :09:14. | :09:19.
in King Edward Square as part of the City | :09:20. | :09:23.
of Culture celebrations. They were given away | :09:24. | :09:24.
to nearly 2,000 people Well, it looks as though | :09:25. | :09:28.
it's going to be fairly quiet It is going to be on the mild side, | :09:29. | :09:44.
though, anywhere it brightens up. Friday sees this weak cold front | :09:45. | :09:50.
bringing in a little drizzle. More importantly, brighter skies | :09:51. | :09:53.
for the weekend, and cooler air. So I think we will continue | :09:54. | :09:58.
to see cloud feeding down | :09:59. | :10:01.
from the north-west, perhaps one or two spots | :10:02. | :10:01.
of light rain or drizzle. we're looking at a lot | :10:02. | :10:04.
of dry weather tonight. Mostly cloudy tomorrow, | :10:05. | :10:07.
a weak front will bring just a few spots of rain or drizzle southwards | :10:08. | :10:12.
through the morning. The afternoon should be dry | :10:13. | :10:15.
and a little bit brighter, although there will always be | :10:16. | :10:18.
a lot of cloud around. Top temperatures milder than today, | :10:19. | :10:22.
you will notice that, I think - Mostly dry but rather cloudy | :10:23. | :10:25.
on Friday, brighter over the weekend with | :10:26. | :10:31.
some sunshine and variable cloud. But temperatures dropping off | :10:32. | :10:34.
for quite a chilly feel at times. We're back with the breakfast | :10:35. | :10:37.
news from around 6:25am. going into the weekend as well. A | :10:38. | :11:03.
similar story across the UK. Thomas matter has that story. | :11:04. | :11:10.
Good evening, before we get to the forecast, I want to show you a map | :11:11. | :11:16.
which depicts how dry it has been during the course of April. Brown is | :11:17. | :11:22.
below average rainfall, blue is above average. You can see how Brown | :11:23. | :11:28.
the map is. Some areas in the south, some counties have only seen a few | :11:29. | :11:29.
percent so | :11:30. | :11:31. |
