Good evening and welcome to Look North. | :00:13. | :00:17.
A huge fireworks display has marked the beginning of Hull's year | :00:18. | :00:19.
25,000 watched on from the banks of the Humber. | :00:20. | :00:25.
Earlier parts of the city were turned into a giant light show. | :00:26. | :00:27.
Our culture correspondent, Anne-Marie Tasker, has this report. | :00:28. | :00:30.
It took 500 hours to plan but just 12 minutes to perform, the firework | :00:31. | :00:33.
show that City of Culture promised would be bigger than London's on New | :00:34. | :00:38.
25,000 people packed in to see Hull start its year in the spotlight. | :00:39. | :00:49.
It is like being in a completely different city, a foreign city. | :00:50. | :00:52.
Everybody is in really great spirits. | :00:53. | :00:59.
We have come all the way from South Africa to see the fireworks. | :01:00. | :01:05.
It is such an amazing place and the fireworks are spectacular. | :01:06. | :01:08.
It was amazing, all the music that went with it, I am so | :01:09. | :01:16.
happy about it, so happy for Hull, I hope it is | :01:17. | :01:19.
After more than three years of planning City of Culture | :01:20. | :01:22.
is finally here and with 15,000 fireworks | :01:23. | :01:24.
exploding above the Humber it really is starting with a bang. | :01:25. | :01:26.
When you are in my game you love the planning | :01:27. | :01:32.
bit but you love the moment when the show starts. | :01:33. | :01:34.
The team here have worked really hard and the City | :01:35. | :01:36.
Council have planned so hard and got this | :01:37. | :01:38.
stage ready for us so it is | :01:39. | :01:40.
always great to take up the curtain and open. | :01:41. | :01:45.
And this was the curtain raiser, the week-long opening event made in | :01:46. | :01:55.
Hull. A look back at a century of the city's history, light and sound | :01:56. | :01:58.
recreating moments like the Blitz, Hull Fair and Hull City's | :01:59. | :02:05.
Premier League promotion. there is negative stuff in the | :02:06. | :02:13.
papers but if it goes on like this it will be fantastic. In some ways I | :02:14. | :02:18.
want to keep it secret bid in other ways it is great to celebrate Hull | :02:19. | :02:20.
and this is a great night. And from Hull's | :02:21. | :02:22.
history to its future, with the first baby born | :02:23. | :02:24.
in the city in 2017. Little Lincoln's footprint will join | :02:25. | :02:26.
ones taken from every baby born during City of Culture year, | :02:27. | :02:29.
to make a huge picture like this. It is amazing to have the first baby | :02:30. | :02:44.
born in Hull 2017. It is lovely to see the babies' footprints, they | :02:45. | :02:47.
will be able to look back on it when they are older. Three and a half | :02:48. | :02:53.
tonnes of fireworks helped City of Culture get off to an explosive | :02:54. | :02:59.
start. The organisers promised 364 more unforgettable days. | :03:00. | :03:09.
There is more coverage of the fireworks display on our Facebook | :03:10. | :03:10.
page. Humberside Police say they had one | :03:11. | :03:11.
of their busiest shifts last night, after an evening of what they've | :03:12. | :03:14.
described as "alcohol-fuelled Officers in Hull claim that at one | :03:15. | :03:16.

are off the bottom - And with the weather, | :03:51. | :03:54.
here's Aisling Creevey. Hello there, and a very | :03:55. | :04:02.
happy New Year. Over the next couple of hours | :04:03. | :04:04.
we continue to see those showers Just one or two as we head | :04:05. | :04:07.
through the overnight but it's certainly turning very cold as those | :04:08. | :04:12.
skies start to clear, and we will see lows tonight | :04:13. | :04:15.
of around one Celsius, but certainly much colder than this | :04:16. | :04:17.
away from the towns. The risk of ice first | :04:18. | :04:20.
thing in the morning. There's a good deal | :04:21. | :04:22.
of sunshine around tomorrow. We hang onto those showers | :04:23. | :04:28.
mainly close to the coast, so for most of us it is a dry | :04:29. | :04:33.
but a very cold day in the store, Over the next couple | :04:34. | :04:37.
of days temperatures We see a lot more cloud around | :04:38. | :04:40.
as we head into Tuesday, -- again by the end of the week. | :04:41. | :04:54.
We will be back tomorrow lunchtime at a quarter past one. If you have | :04:55. | :04:59.
any pictures of the fireworks you can put them on our Facebook page. | :05:00. | :05:05.
For many, New Year's Day was a shocker with all of that rain | :05:06. | :05:15.
around. Tomorrow will be sunny, but it is getting colder. This is rain | :05:16. | :05:20.
clearing from the south-east. These specks of white as snow mixed in | :05:21. | :05:24.
with showers across parts of northern England, particularly | :05:25. | :05:26.
across Scotland, low levels here. I say that they hazard in northern and | :05:27. | :05:32.
eastern areas. I would not rule out slippery areas almost anywhere by | :05:33. | :05:36.
the morning, by which time temperatures will be close to or | :05:37. | :05:41.
below freezing in many places. A bright and sunny start, but still | :05:42. | :05:44.
wintry showers, sliding down the North Sea coast. Some snow down at | :05:45. | :05:48.
quite low levels to the north of Scotland. Here, the snow will turn | :05:49. | :05:52.
to rain. Something milder creeping in off the Atlantic as it clouds | :05:53. | :05:57.
over. Further south, despite that sunshine, it will feel cold. 3-5 is | :05:58. | :06:02.
the best I can offer you, briefly, through the afternoon. Then | :06:03. | :06:06.
temperatures fall away like a stone. Through the | :06:07. | :06:07. |
