Hello and welcome to Thursday's Look serious

:00:00.:00:00.

Hello and welcome to Thursday's Look North.

:00:00.:00:07.

Tonight... Extended jail sentences for the men

:00:08.:00:10.

who sexually abused vulnerable young boys in their care. It's blighted my

:00:11.:00:19.

life. My whole life has been totally surrounded by this abuse case.

:00:20.:00:23.

She was stalked and raped by her former partner. Now she's warning

:00:24.:00:31.

others, to avoid the same fate. There are probably thousands of

:00:32.:00:34.

girls and women going through the same thing. Tell their family and

:00:35.:00:39.

friends, phoned the police, get out. The Shadow Chancellor visits the

:00:40.:00:43.

North, and says the region is still facing "a cost of living crisis" .

:00:44.:00:46.

And they were told it would never last. The couple, renewing their

:00:47.:00:49.

vows, after 60 years of marriage. In sport: three games from Wembley `

:00:50.:00:55.

can Gateshead keep their dreams of a return to the Football League alive?

:00:56.:00:58.

And the Wildcats may be underdogs but can they pull off a shock

:00:59.:01:01.

victory against Champions Newcastle Eagles in this weekend's playoff

:01:02.:01:02.

derby? It's a horrendous tale of systematic

:01:03.:01:20.

sexual abuse ` carried out by a social worker and a care worker at a

:01:21.:01:23.

school for troubled children. John Leslie Duncan, who's now 61, and

:01:24.:01:26.

58`year`old Kevin Brown, preyed on vulnerable boys for years. They'd

:01:27.:01:31.

already been given jail sentences for their crimes. But then more

:01:32.:01:37.

victims started to come forward. So the police began a new investigation

:01:38.:01:40.

` and this evening, a judge extended those sentences. Duncan now gets a

:01:41.:01:45.

total of 24 years behind bars ` Brown gets 14 years. Tonight, we

:01:46.:01:49.

hear from their victims. Our Chief Reporter Chris Stewart has the

:01:50.:01:53.

story. They trusted him, liked him ` some

:01:54.:01:58.

of them loved him like a father. And they were repaid by being sexually

:01:59.:02:03.

abused. Tonight, John Leslie Duncan is starting an extended prison

:02:04.:02:08.

sentence. In court today to see his abuser ` and supported today by his

:02:09.:02:12.

family ` one of Duncan's victims, who has waived his right to

:02:13.:02:19.

anonymity. It feels good. It is a weight off my shoulders. It was my

:02:20.:02:24.

big secret of these years. It blighted my life. My whole life was

:02:25.:02:29.

just totally surrounded by this abuse case. I was ashamed of.

:02:30.:02:35.

Trusting the police was a big issue. Trusting the police was a big issue

:02:36.:02:45.

and it was a great thing to do. And this is Duncan's colleague, care

:02:46.:02:48.

worker Kevin Brown. His string of offences not as serious as Duncan's

:02:49.:02:51.

` but also involving what the judge said was a shocking breach of trust.

:02:52.:02:55.

One of his victims also spoke to us. The first time he told me it was

:02:56.:02:59.

an accident and would not happen again and I believed him because he

:03:00.:03:04.

had always been friendly. Was there ever a point where you thought you

:03:05.:03:09.

needed to tell someone? I was too frightened to. He said if I said

:03:10.:03:16.

anything, he knew where my family was and he would come and see them.

:03:17.:03:19.

The majority of the offences happened at Feversham School at

:03:20.:03:22.

Walbottle on the outskirts of Newcastle. The school's trustees

:03:23.:03:25.

were the mental health charity Mind. The building which housed Feversham

:03:26.:03:28.

still exists ` but there's no other link. Feversham closed in 1996. Only

:03:29.:03:32.

one school brochure produced by the charity still exists ` and this is

:03:33.:03:38.

it. These exclusive pictures show the children, the school's aims...

:03:39.:03:42.

It also shows Duncan with children on his knee and a youthful Kevin

:03:43.:03:50.

Brown. Two carers turned tormentors. The youngsters sent here were often

:03:51.:03:52.

from very troubled family backgrounds. Best illustrated by

:03:53.:04:01.

something which happened during the police interviews. One victim was

:04:02.:04:05.

asked to identify himself in a photograph and said he could not. He

:04:06.:04:11.

said he had never seen a picture of mice `` of himself as a child.

:04:12.:04:14.

One former Feversham workers says when he raised the alarm, his claims

:04:15.:04:18.

were dismissed by the trustees. They interviewed me for two days at the

:04:19.:04:25.

offices in Gateshead, in which I told them everything that I knew. I

:04:26.:04:29.

presented written evidence of things that were going wrong. I mean to

:04:30.:04:37.

people at the school. Then I received a letter three weeks after

:04:38.:04:41.

that telling me that my allegations were without foundations.

:04:42.:04:46.

Tonight, the police had this to say. We would always encourage victims to

:04:47.:04:52.

come forward and report sexual offences regardless when they

:04:53.:04:58.

happens. We will always fully investigate any report of sexual

:04:59.:05:01.

offences and with our partners, make sure the victims get all the support

:05:02.:05:04.

they need. A spokesman for Mind, meanwhile, says the charity wasn't

:05:05.:05:07.

involved in the governance of the school ` and that it applauds those

:05:08.:05:19.

who have spoken out. It's a crime that one in five women,

:05:20.:05:23.

and one in ten men, will experience at some point in their life. Yet

:05:24.:05:35.

stalking continues to be one of the most under`reported offences. Today

:05:36.:05:37.

a South Tyneside woman ` who was stalked and raped by her ex`partner

:05:38.:05:41.

` is sharing HER story, to try to encourage other victims to seek

:05:42.:05:45.

help. Katie Cole has been to meet her. It started with text in and

:05:46.:05:48.

phone calls. He would turn up unexpectedly at my door. He would

:05:49.:05:53.

follow me to work. Anywhere you went with friends and family, he would

:05:54.:05:55.

turn up. Catherine Cunningham has been

:05:56.:05:58.

through more than most in the last two years. She was stalked for

:05:59.:06:02.

months by her ex partner. At the time, if I had realised it would

:06:03.:06:07.

escalate, I should have phoned the police and reported it.

:06:08.:06:09.

Catherine did eventually contact the police ` after her ex broke into her

:06:10.:06:13.

home and raped her. He is now serving an eight year jail sentence.

:06:14.:06:19.

There are probably thousands of girls and women going through the

:06:20.:06:23.

same thing. It is really important for them to tell family and friends,

:06:24.:06:28.

phone the police, get out. If I can help someone avoid going through

:06:29.:06:32.

what I did it is worth it. Today is National Stalking Awareness

:06:33.:06:35.

Day ` a campaign being supported by our regions police forces. The focus

:06:36.:06:39.

in on workplace stalking ` a quarter of victims say they're stalker has

:06:40.:06:43.

turned up at work. One of the things we are pushing us for employers to

:06:44.:06:47.

have policies and practices in place to recognise stalking. It is

:06:48.:06:55.

actually quite important, not only for the welfare of the victim, but

:06:56.:07:00.

also from a productivity point of view, if you have victims on the

:07:01.:07:04.

sick or underperforming, it has a performance issue in the workplace.

:07:05.:07:09.

For Catherine ` she's now trying to put her life back together ` but she

:07:10.:07:13.

says the emotional scars of what happened WILL never go away. It

:07:14.:07:17.

won't go away. Now I know he has been sentenced, I still get that

:07:18.:07:27.

fear. It will not leave. I have to learn to live with it.

:07:28.:07:33.

Katie joins me in the studio. The focus today is on stalking in the

:07:34.:07:37.

workplace ` what's being done to help victims? Employers are going to

:07:38.:07:44.

be given advice on how they can offer support. Handbook has been

:07:45.:07:50.

written. People are going to be trained up in workplaces in the

:07:51.:07:55.

region. As the police Commissioner explained. Our approach is to get

:07:56.:08:02.

champions into workplaces to look after anyone who is suffering from

:08:03.:08:05.

any kind of violence or abuse, including stalking. You should hear

:08:06.:08:12.

in the North East soon get a champion in your workplace. If you

:08:13.:08:16.

need some help and don't have the courage to go to the police, if you

:08:17.:08:23.

are worried about it, speak to that person at work. The message tonight

:08:24.:08:30.

is do not suffer alone. Stalking can ruin lives and it is important that

:08:31.:08:35.

people come forward. Thank you very much for coming in.

:08:36.:08:37.

The Shadow Chancellor, Ed Balls, says the region is still facing "a

:08:38.:08:41.

cost of living crisis" ` despite improving economic figures. Mr Balls

:08:42.:08:44.

was speaking during a visit to Redcar, ahead of next month's

:08:45.:08:46.

European and local elections. Our Political Correspondent, Mark

:08:47.:08:49.

Denten, is live there for us now. Mark. Good evening. We're at the

:08:50.:09:00.

seafront and you can see the new attraction, the Beacon. Well, you

:09:01.:09:07.

cannot see it tonight. You could see the Shadow Chancellor, Ed Balls

:09:08.:09:15.

today. Nigel Farage said last night he was going for Labour votes so Ed

:09:16.:09:22.

Balls appeared today in Redcar. I can bring you the first use of the

:09:23.:09:27.

full ingredients of a very full fruit salad during an election

:09:28.:09:34.

campaign. Taste some fruit cocktail? You know how it is, you're minding

:09:35.:09:38.

your own business in a Redcar supermarket and the Shadow

:09:39.:09:41.

Chancellor comes after you with a fruit stuffed melon. Part of the

:09:42.:09:44.

Labour campaign to highlight a cost`of`living crisis. But could

:09:45.:09:47.

they end up skewered by UKIP at these elections? People will have a

:09:48.:09:50.

choice in 2015. D'you want a Tory Prime Minister, David Cameron, or

:09:51.:09:53.

d'you want a Labour government committed to making the economy

:09:54.:09:58.

work? I do not think Nigel Farage and UKIP will make any difference to

:09:59.:10:02.

that at all. They will not take votes of your party? I think UKIP

:10:03.:10:06.

are a distraction from the main question, do you want a Tory or

:10:07.:10:09.

Labour government? If you want a fairer economy, vote Labour or you

:10:10.:10:13.

will have the Tories. Wouldn't we have more money if we left the EU?

:10:14.:10:19.

The reality here in the North East, Nissan, a big employer, these are

:10:20.:10:22.

big jobs, good jobs in the North East because we are part of the

:10:23.:10:26.

European Union. To walk away from our largest single market when we

:10:27.:10:29.

know these international companies would not be seeing in Britain if we

:10:30.:10:37.

did that would be very dangerous. `` stsaying. What about introducing a

:10:38.:10:43.

living wage? You could commit to that right now. We have a national

:10:44.:10:48.

minimum wage. A living wage. We have a national minimum wage which Labour

:10:49.:10:55.

legislated for. We would like to see that go up. It is about a national

:10:56.:10:58.

minimum wage and protecting the tax credits. Why should voters in the

:10:59.:11:02.

North East and Cumbria trust you to run our economy? There was a global

:11:03.:11:07.

financial crisis all round the world. We have to take our

:11:08.:11:13.

responsibility for that. The question for the future is who will

:11:14.:11:17.

put youth jobs first, who will make the labour market work fairly?

:11:18.:11:20.

Labour are the people with the track record and commitment to make that

:11:21.:11:26.

happen. But his opponents in Redcar are not convinced. Things are

:11:27.:11:30.

getting better, the government is backing the Tees Valley heavily,

:11:31.:11:33.

they are putting five times as much money into the Tees Valley for

:11:34.:11:36.

manufacturing than the previous government. We are getting people

:11:37.:11:43.

back to work successfully. The other thing Labour don't like to mention

:11:44.:11:47.

is the ?700 tax cut which the Lib Dems had on the front of their

:11:48.:11:50.

manifesto last time. This comes into fruition this month. We will of

:11:51.:12:03.

course be bringing you news from the other parties visits to the region

:12:04.:12:10.

ahead of the local and Euro elections on May the 22nd. Whether

:12:11.:12:15.

they are brandishing fruit cocktails or anything else.

:12:16.:12:20.

Thank you for that. In addition to Labour and the

:12:21.:12:23.

Liberal Democrats, six other parties are contesting the European

:12:24.:12:26.

elections in the North East. They are An Independence in Europe, the

:12:27.:12:28.

British National The meat`free food manufacturer,

:12:29.:12:33.

Quorn, has confirmed it's creating new jobs on Teesside and in North

:12:34.:12:37.

Yorkshire. Around 600 people already work at its two sites. 50 jobs are

:12:38.:12:41.

currently being created, with the promise of 100 more over the next

:12:42.:12:44.

five years. About 150 jobs should also be created in Quorn's supply

:12:45.:12:47.

chain. Our Business Correspondent, Ian Reeve, reports.

:12:48.:12:55.

Billingham ` the centre of Quorn production. This vague relative of

:12:56.:13:00.

the mushroom is fermented here on Teesside. And demand for the

:13:01.:13:08.

meat`free products it's turned into ` burgers, mince, chicken drumsticks

:13:09.:13:13.

amongst others ` is soaring. So a ?30m investment here will boost

:13:14.:13:19.

production. We have seen a 15% growth over the last 18 months. We

:13:20.:13:24.

believe that can continue, there is a trend for eating less meat. We eat

:13:25.:13:31.

500 meals a year with meat, it is not what we used to do and it is

:13:32.:13:36.

just too much. Forming and shaping Quorn is done here in North

:13:37.:13:39.

Yorkshire. The horse meat scandal, and the rising cost of meat, have

:13:40.:13:42.

been good for this business. Quorn has over 12m customers. 80% of us

:13:43.:13:48.

have tried Quorn. Even though only 7% of us are vegetarians. If we look

:13:49.:14:01.

at the filling on these eggs here. Quorn is now Britain's 35th biggest

:14:02.:14:05.

brand ` ahead of Heinz tomato ketchup. It's Tim and Carole's job

:14:06.:14:11.

to come up with new products, and make it even bigger. We had great

:14:12.:14:19.

success with the picnic egg. We are developing a pork pie without the

:14:20.:14:22.

port. We are very passionate or we would not be here after 22 years. We

:14:23.:14:29.

love the product. Mo Farrah's doing his bit, too. Quorn is low in

:14:30.:14:39.

saturated fat. Practice, protein. Even without Mo's help, Quorn's

:14:40.:14:43.

selling in 15 countries. More of us are trying it. A company flotation

:14:44.:14:46.

could be on the cards. It looks like a success story that could run and

:14:47.:14:53.

run. Another success story now! They were

:14:54.:14:56.

told it would never last. Margaret Price's parents even refused to

:14:57.:14:59.

attend her wedding, after her boyfriend, Robert, popped the

:15:00.:15:02.

question. That was SIXTY years ago. And today, the couple have been

:15:03.:15:05.

celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary. As they renewed their

:15:06.:15:10.

vows ` even the best man from all those years ago turned up. Julie

:15:11.:15:18.

Smith reports. Robert and Margaret haven't seen best man Kenny since

:15:19.:15:22.

the day they became Mr and Mrs Price. But Kenny and four

:15:23.:15:26.

generations of the family joined together for today's celebrations.

:15:27.:15:33.

My dad would not give his permission. He just thought it

:15:34.:15:38.

wouldn't last so we proved him wrong. Yes. And as the couple

:15:39.:15:43.

renewed their vows there wasn't a dry eye in the church. All this I

:15:44.:15:53.

am, I continue to give to you. Wonderful, absolutely wonderful. We

:15:54.:15:58.

have brought our children into our past, they will all remember, even

:15:59.:16:05.

the little ones. It was wonderful to see them in there again today. I can

:16:06.:16:10.

picture them as they were on the original DE. To see my mum and dad

:16:11.:16:18.

still so happy, I just cried. It was really nice. Margaret and Robert

:16:19.:16:24.

have been retracing their steps, but what everyone wants to know is what

:16:25.:16:29.

is a secret to a long and lasting marriage? We still hold hands. One

:16:30.:16:43.

has only got to say, yes, dear. Very nice.

:16:44.:16:48.

Now, he remains the last Newcastle United manager to lift a major

:16:49.:16:54.

trophy. And today some of the great names from the club's past joined

:16:55.:16:58.

family members to honour Joe Harvey. 45 years on from the Fairs Cup

:16:59.:17:01.

triumph, a plaque was unveiled at the Gallowgate End of St James' Park

:17:02.:17:04.

to commemorate the Yorkshireman's achievements. Peter Harris was

:17:05.:17:07.

there. Here comes Joe Harvey. This is the man they want. They are

:17:08.:17:16.

saying Sir Joe Harvey. A Newcastle manager with the trophy, an

:17:17.:17:19.

achievement worthy of an owner in itself. Family and players

:17:20.:17:25.

remembered Joe Harvey. John was a great man manager. He knew the fans.

:17:26.:17:30.

That's why I said before, he knew what fans wanted. The plaque

:17:31.:17:36.

commemorates the 1969 cup win. His playing career was memorable in

:17:37.:17:39.

itself, not least the 1950s cup wins. Mr Churchill was there to

:17:40.:17:49.

present the cup and he presented it! He still has the original shots.

:17:50.:18:03.

I will wear them on the beach this summer. They wore big shorts in

:18:04.:18:09.

those days. Don't be like that! Given his achievements as player and

:18:10.:18:12.

manager ` some think this is long overdue. Too late, why didn't the

:18:13.:18:16.

club do this? Why do the Supporters Association have to do it? The club

:18:17.:18:19.

should have memorialised Joe Harvey as the last man to win a trophy. The

:18:20.:18:25.

present get embarrassed by the past because the present isn't good

:18:26.:18:35.

enough. As a father, he was more like a brother. He was like a

:18:36.:18:38.

brother because we did everything together. I went to the scouts with,

:18:39.:18:44.

played football with him, played golf with him. He was like a

:18:45.:18:48.

brother. Joe Harvey died in 1989. His achievements as a manager to

:18:49.:18:51.

this day remain unsurpassed by any of his successors. CROWD: Joe

:18:52.:18:58.

Harvey! Joe Harvey! Everybody loving this.

:18:59.:19:10.

I met him a few times. He was a lovely guy. Some more football

:19:11.:19:16.

history? Yes. Relegated from the Football League

:19:17.:19:19.

in 1960, Conference Premier club Gateshead will take a giant step

:19:20.:19:22.

towards promotion back to the big time if they can pick up at least a

:19:23.:19:26.

point at home to second placed Cambridge on Saturday. Even a defeat

:19:27.:19:30.

might not be disastrous if other results go their way. But, as Mark

:19:31.:19:33.

Tulip reports, the Tynesiders are determined not to slip up.

:19:34.:19:37.

If these are the scenes at Gateshead Stadium at around five o clock on

:19:38.:19:40.

Saturday, it will mean that the town's professional football club is

:19:41.:19:43.

still on target to regain its league status 54 years after losing it.

:19:44.:19:52.

Former European Cup winner Gary Mills guided York City to promotion

:19:53.:19:55.

via the Conference play`off final at Wembley and is quietly confident of

:19:56.:19:58.

ending the Heed's half century long exile. From where we were back in

:19:59.:20:03.

September, to end up finishing third, Cambridge Road at one stage

:20:04.:20:07.

20 points ahead of us, it just shows how well we have done. That is our

:20:08.:20:14.

aim. We go into a game to try and win it. Give us the advantage of

:20:15.:20:17.

finishing third and having the second leg back here. Few would

:20:18.:20:20.

deserve to reach a Wembley play`off final more than veteran James

:20:21.:20:23.

Curtis, who recently made his 500th appearance for the club. Not many

:20:24.:20:28.

players play 500 games for the same club over this amount of time in any

:20:29.:20:36.

week really. So I was really proud when I did it against Braintree last

:20:37.:20:40.

week. I hope I get to play a few more yet. `` in any league really.

:20:41.:20:52.

It was a massive opportunity for us to get into that league. We will do

:20:53.:20:57.

everything we can to get the points on Saturday and hopefully from the

:20:58.:21:02.

play`offs to get promotion. Can Gateshead become the history boys,

:21:03.:21:09.

just three games away from Wembley? Let's hope so.

:21:10.:21:13.

Staying with football, and Carlisle United striker Danny Cadamateri has

:21:14.:21:16.

been forced to quit the game, because of a serious knee problem.

:21:17.:21:19.

The 34`year`old made his name at Everton, and joined the Cumbrians in

:21:20.:21:23.

the summer of 2012. He hasn't played at all this season, because of his

:21:24.:21:26.

injury, and has retired on the advice of his surgeon.

:21:27.:21:29.

Now if you're a basketball fan I bet you can't wait for this weekend! For

:21:30.:21:35.

the first time two teams from the north east have made it through to

:21:36.:21:39.

the BBL playoffs. Not only that but Championship winners Newcastle

:21:40.:21:42.

Eagles take on Durham Wildcats for a place in the semi `finals. For the

:21:43.:21:45.

Wildcats who're in just their third season in the top flight making the

:21:46.:21:48.

playoffs is an achievement in itself. The Wildcats back on court

:21:49.:21:54.

after a dramatic weekend which saw them beat Birmingham and cherish our

:21:55.:22:00.

to secure the final play`off place in their first involvement in the

:22:01.:22:04.

end of season finale. Now they want to go a step further. The cherry on

:22:05.:22:10.

top of the cake would be our first play`off wins and our first wins

:22:11.:22:14.

against the Newcastle league. It could be fantastic for us. Their

:22:15.:22:21.

weekend is in contrast to the Newcastle league who had the chance

:22:22.:22:27.

to enjoy a week off. Durham go into this weekend full of energy. We have

:22:28.:22:33.

confidence going into the next round against the Newcastle Eagles. It is

:22:34.:22:40.

amazing for the club. We could not hope for a bigger play`off challenge

:22:41.:22:46.

than against the league winners and their Newcastle Eagles and that this

:22:47.:22:49.

is the North East backyard is adding extra space and I am sure the Eagles

:22:50.:22:57.

are the same. The Eagles may have won all three meetings between the

:22:58.:23:01.

two sides but we have all been tight and at play`off time anything can

:23:02.:23:07.

happen. We played them close but we have not had a big city yet. It has

:23:08.:23:11.

been a battle so I expect another battle. We just have to keep trying

:23:12.:23:16.

to get better and one of these times we will overturn them. The one of

:23:17.:23:22.

those teams we just did not want face. If we can fit play at the pace

:23:23.:23:28.

we want to play at, it will put them in a difficult position. The

:23:29.:23:33.

Wildcats will have the home crowd behind them on the second leg. North

:23:34.:23:37.

East basketball is definitely the winner in this contest.

:23:38.:23:55.

`` may the best team win. Now for `` may the best team win. Now for

:23:56.:24:02.

the weather. Tomorrow there will be some

:24:03.:24:05.

brightness. It will be restricted to western regions because we have

:24:06.:24:10.

clouded and missed in the east. This will spread west, bringing rain with

:24:11.:24:17.

it. Some rain around today, a couple of showers heavy over the hills.

:24:18.:24:23.

They are dying away as we head through this evening. Most places

:24:24.:24:28.

will be dry through the night. Increasing cloud and low mist, some

:24:29.:24:33.

coastal and help for. Western regions keep clear spells.

:24:34.:24:38.

Temperatures around seven Celsius in the breeze. Some brightness early on

:24:39.:24:46.

tomorrow in the West of Cumbria. This cloudy, misty weather from the

:24:47.:24:50.

east will spread westwards. The rain will become more widespread. Most

:24:51.:24:56.

places will see rain with some heavy bursts in the second half of the

:24:57.:25:00.

day. A range of temperatures in the cool easterly breeze. After the

:25:01.:25:07.

brighter start in the West, we could see 15 Celsius, getting shelter from

:25:08.:25:15.

the easterly winds. That is the picture for tomorrow and towards the

:25:16.:25:19.

weekend, low pressure from the South will start to dominate. That will

:25:20.:25:24.

produce clouds and rain and will head our way through the weekend.

:25:25.:25:29.

And improving picture for the second part of the weekend. If you're out

:25:30.:25:34.

and about in the next few days, it will cloud over from the East and

:25:35.:25:38.

eventually there will be rain in several places. More rain to come on

:25:39.:25:44.

Saturday at drier and brighter on Sunday. The North East hangs onto

:25:45.:25:53.

more clouds and rain through tomorrow and Saturday. Temperatures

:25:54.:25:58.

will climb slightly towards the mid`teens. Drier and brighter

:25:59.:26:04.

weather for the weekend will be on Sunday. We would love to see your

:26:05.:26:11.

April weather pictures. Check out our website to see what we're after.

:26:12.:26:17.

Some are not quite on yet. Thanks for that. Join us tomorrow. Goodbye.

All across the country, millions of families are waking up

:26:52.:26:55.

to a Britain in which they find it harder to get on.
