Good evening. First tonight ` an horrendous tale | :00:15. | :00:18.
of systematic sexual abuse carried out by a social worker and a care | :00:19. | :00:22.
worker at a school for troubled children. John Leslie Duncan, who's | :00:23. | :00:25.
now 61 and 58`year`old Kevin Brown, preyed on vulnerable boys for years. | :00:26. | :00:28.
They'd already been given jail sentences for their crimes. But as | :00:29. | :00:36.
more victims came forward the police began a new investigation and this | :00:37. | :00:38.
evening, a judge extended those sentences. Here's our Chief | :00:39. | :00:40.
Reporter, Chris Stewart. They trusted him, liked him, some of | :00:41. | :00:43.
them loved him like a father and they were repaid by being sexually | :00:44. | :00:48.
abused. Tonight, John Leslie Duncan is starting an extended prison | :00:49. | :00:53.
sentence. In court to see his abuser and supported today by his family, | :00:54. | :00:56.
one of Duncan's victims, who has waived his right to anonymity. It | :00:57. | :01:01.
was my big secret all these years. It blighted my life. My whole life | :01:02. | :01:05.
was just totally surrounded by this abuse case and it was such an | :01:06. | :01:08.
embarrassment, I was ashamed. Coming forward has been the best thing. | :01:09. | :01:11.
Trusting the police has been the big issue. This is Duncan's colleague, | :01:12. | :01:16.
care worker Kevin Brown. His string of offences, not as serious as | :01:17. | :01:19.
Duncan's but also involving what the judge said was a shocking breach of | :01:20. | :01:23.
trust. One of his victims has also spoken to us. The first time he told | :01:24. | :01:28.
me it was an accident and would never happen again. And I believed | :01:29. | :01:31.
him, because he had always been friendly. Was there ever a point | :01:32. | :01:35.
where you thought, "I need to tell somebody this"? I was scared to. He | :01:36. | :01:42.
told me if I said anything he knew where my family where and he would | :01:43. | :01:46.
go and see them. The majority of the offences happened at Feversham | :01:47. | :01:49.
School at Walbottle on the outskirts of Newcastle. The school's trustees | :01:50. | :01:56.
were the mental health charity Mind. The building which housed Feversham | :01:57. | :01:59.
still exists but there's no other link. Feversham closed in 1996. Only | :02:00. | :02:05.
one school brochure produced by the charity still exists and this is it. | :02:06. | :02:08.
These exclusive pictures show the children, the school's aims and it | :02:09. | :02:12.
also shows Duncan with children on his knee and a youthful Kevin Brown. | :02:13. | :02:21.
Two carers turned tormentors. The youngsters sent to Feversham were | :02:22. | :02:24.
often from very troubled family backgrounds. Tonight, the police had | :02:25. | :02:28.
this to say. We would always encourage victims to come forward | :02:29. | :02:30.
and report sexual offences regardless of when they happened. We | :02:31. | :02:34.
will always fully investigate any reports of sexual offences and with | :02:35. | :02:36.
our partners, make sure that the victims get all of the support they | :02:37. | :02:44.
need. A spokesman for Mind meanwhile, says the charity wasn't | :02:45. | :02:46.
involved in the governance or operation of the school and that it | :02:47. | :02:57.
applauds those who have spoken out. It's a crime that one in five women | :02:58. | :03:01.
and one in ten men will experience at some point in their life. Yet | :03:02. | :03:05.
stalking continues to be one of the most under`reported offences. Today | :03:06. | :03:08.
a South Tyneside woman who was stalked and raped by her ex partner, | :03:09. | :03:12.
is sharing her story to try and encourage other victims to get help. | :03:13. | :03:16.
Katie Cole has been to meet her. It started with texts and phone | :03:17. | :03:19.
calls. Then he would turn up unexpected at your door. He's follow | :03:20. | :03:24.
you to work. Erm, anywhere you went with friends, family... He'd turn | :03:25. | :03:29.
up. Catherine Cunningham has been through more than most in the last | :03:30. | :03:33.
two years. She was stalked for months by her ex`partner. At the | :03:34. | :03:36.
time, if I'd realised how it would have escalated, I should have phone | :03:37. | :03:39.
the police and reported it. Catherine did eventually contact the | :03:40. | :03:42.
police after her ex broke into her home and raped her. He's now serving | :03:43. | :03:49.
an eight`year jail sentence. There's probably hundreds, thousands of | :03:50. | :03:52.
girls, women going through the same thing and it's really important for | :03:53. | :03:55.
them to tell their family, friends, phone the police. Get help. If I can | :03:56. | :04:00.
help one person going through what I did, then it's worth it. | :04:01. | :04:15.
Katie joins me in the studio. The focus today is on stalking in | :04:16. | :04:18.
the workplace, what's being done to help victims? A quarter of victims | :04:19. | :04:29.
said they are stalked at work. We have been speaking to Northumbria | :04:30. | :04:33.
Police. At the end of the day, it's actually quite important, not only | :04:34. | :04:36.
from the victim's welfare point of view, but if you think about it from | :04:37. | :04:41.
a productivity point of view, if you've got victims on the sick | :04:42. | :04:44.
frequently or are underperforming at work, it has a performance issue | :04:45. | :04:49.
within the workplace. The message tonight is not to suffer alone. We | :04:50. | :04:55.
know 80% of victims will wait until there has been more than 100 | :04:56. | :05:01.
incidents of stalking before telling anyone. It can ruin lives, so it is | :05:02. | :05:04.
important people come forward. Thanks very much. The Shadow | :05:05. | :05:11.
Chancellor, Ed Balls, says despite improving economic figures, our | :05:12. | :05:14.
region is still facing "a cost of living crisis". Mr Balls was | :05:15. | :05:17.
speaking during a visit to Redcar ahead of next month's European and | :05:18. | :05:19.
local elections. Our Political Correspondent, Mark Denten, caught | :05:20. | :05:23.
up with him on a trip to the supermarket. And he asked Mr Balls | :05:24. | :05:26.
what he thought of Nigel Farrage telling us on last night's Look | :05:27. | :05:29.
North how the UK Independence Party intends to steal the Labour vote in | :05:30. | :05:32.
the north. I think UKIP are a distraction from | :05:33. | :05:36.
the main question ` do you want a Tory government or a Labour | :05:37. | :05:39.
government? If you want a fair economy for the future, vote Labour, | :05:40. | :05:42.
or else you'll get the Tories. Wouldn't we have more money in our | :05:43. | :05:46.
wallets and purses if we left the EU? Look, the reality here in the | :05:47. | :05:51.
North East, Nissan, a big employer. Those are big jobs, good jobs here | :05:52. | :05:54.
in the North East because we are part of the European Union. To walk | :05:55. | :05:58.
away from our largest single market, where we know these international | :05:59. | :06:01.
companies like Nissan wouldn't be staying in Britain if we did that, | :06:02. | :06:05.
would be very dangerous. In addition to Labour and the | :06:06. | :06:08.
Liberal Democrats, six other parties are contesting the European | :06:09. | :06:10.
elections in the North East. They are An Independence in Europe, the | :06:11. | :06:13.
British National Party, the Conservatives, the English | :06:14. | :06:15.
Democrats, the Green Party, and the UK Independence Party. The former | :06:16. | :06:22.
Newcastle United football manager, Joe Harvey, was remembered today, in | :06:23. | :06:26.
a ceremony to mark the Magpies winning the European Fairs Cup. It | :06:27. | :06:30.
was 45 years ago and it was the club's last major trophy. Friends, | :06:31. | :06:32.
family and former players gathered outside St James' Park for the | :06:33. | :06:35.
unveiling, which was organised by a group of United Supporters. | :06:36. | :06:41.
That is it from me, now the weather. Already we have mist and fog rolling | :06:42. | :06:54.
in. Could be a few spots of drizzle later. In the West it stays dry and | :06:55. | :07:01.
clearer. Temperatures will be sick or seven overnight. Parts of Cumbria | :07:02. | :07:06.
where we will see the best of any brightness. The grey and misty | :07:07. | :07:10.
weather in the East will spread west and it will produce rain which will | :07:11. | :07:15.
become more widespread in the afternoon. Most places will | :07:16. | :07:20.
experience heavy bursts of rain. Temperatures tomorrow afternoon | :07:21. | :07:25.
struggling to make double figures. Could see 14 Celsius in Whitehaven. | :07:26. | :07:31.
We will have the National forecast shortly, in | :07:32. | :07:31.
weekend, you can see what is going on. Sunday might be brighter. Now | :07:32. | :07:37.
over to Louise Lear for the national weather. | :07:38. | :07:41.
Good evening. Today has been a day of sunny spells and a few scattered | :07:42. | :07:44.
showers, but where we see the sunshine, we have also seen some | :07:45. | :07:48.
warmth, with temperatures in the high teens. A slightly disappointing | :07:49. | :07:53.
story across the far north-east of Scotland. We keep that easterly feed | :07:54. | :08:00.
through the night to night, but looking out into the Atlantic, we | :08:01. | :08:03.
also start to pick up the south-westerly circulate in, and | :08:04. | :08:06.
area of low pressure bringing in some blustery winds for the start of | :08:07. | :08:12.
the weekend. Tonight it stays mostly dry, with some fog around. And we | :08:13. | :08:19.
pick up the risk of a few showers in the far south-east. Clearer skies at | :08:20. | :08:24.
the the South West, and cloudy, | :08:25. | :08:26. |
