Hello and welcome to Wednesday's Look North. | :00:00. | :00:08.
Tonight: The Labour MP for Copeland, Jamie Reed, is resigning | :00:09. | :00:13.
from Parliament to take a job at Sellafield. | :00:14. | :00:15.
The number of people who say they were abused at a County Durham | :00:16. | :00:19.
Could Brexit hit farmers' grazing rights in parts | :00:20. | :00:23.
And how this Springer Spaniel has become a worldwide | :00:24. | :00:28.
In sport, Newcastle moves a step closer to hosting a major | :00:29. | :00:34.
And after four years in exile, Darlington Football Club is all set | :00:35. | :00:41.
First tonight: The Labour MP for Copeland and leading | :00:42. | :00:59.
critic of Jeremy Corbyn, Jamie Reed, is resigning | :01:00. | :01:01.
But Mr Reed says he's leaving to take a job at Sellafield, | :01:02. | :01:07.
and not because of any disillusionment with | :01:08. | :01:08.
It does, though, trigger a tricky by-election for his party. | :01:09. | :01:14.
Jamie Reed's majority in Copeland was just 2,564. | :01:15. | :01:18.
Here's our Political Editor Richard Moss. | :01:19. | :01:27.
It's not the Christmas present Labour would have wanted. | :01:28. | :01:29.
Jamie Reed's resignation will lead to a bruising | :01:30. | :01:31.
The Copeland MP is quitting Parliament to take up a job | :01:32. | :01:35.
at Sellafield as the nuclear site's head of Development | :01:36. | :01:37.
Reed has been a big supporter of the nuclear industry | :01:38. | :01:40.
and was a press officer at Sellafield before becoming | :01:41. | :01:43.
He was soon seen as a man with the potential to | :01:44. | :01:47.
The US Embassy invited him to observe the 2008 Presidential | :01:48. | :01:51.
election as they saw him as a future UK political leader, | :01:52. | :01:53.
As well as his backing for nuclear power, health has been an important | :01:54. | :02:00.
He served as a Shadow Health Minister, and has been | :02:01. | :02:04.
at the forefront of the campaign to protect services | :02:05. | :02:06.
at the West Cumberland Hospital in his constituency. | :02:07. | :02:08.
But he's had his own health problems, spending time in that | :02:09. | :02:11.
very hospital in 2010 after being diagnosed with diabetes. | :02:12. | :02:14.
And it's not the first time a Jamie Reed resignation has caused | :02:15. | :02:17.
He quit as a Shadow Minister just seconds into Mr Corbyn's | :02:18. | :02:22.
Since then he's been a fierce critic of a man he sees as leading Labour | :02:23. | :02:28.
Jeremy is not suited to lead Labour, not suited to be a potential, | :02:29. | :02:33.
Jeremy Corbyn is making life difficult for people who need | :02:34. | :02:38.
But he insists today's resignation isn't about the leadership | :02:39. | :02:42.
or direction of the party - simply about serving the community | :02:43. | :02:45.
He says it's the most difficult decision he's ever made. | :02:46. | :02:50.
It will now be down to someone else to defend a Labour majority | :02:51. | :02:53.
in Copeland over the Conservatives of just over 2,500. | :02:54. | :02:59.
Jamie Reed and Jeremy Corbyn didn't see eye to eye | :03:00. | :03:06.
on the future of their party, but the Labour leader has | :03:07. | :03:09.
Yes. A lot of Jeremy Corbyn supporters, do not like Jamie Reed | :03:10. | :03:23.
but Jeremy Corbyn said that he was powerful for his constituency, and | :03:24. | :03:30.
helping infrastructure get to Cumbria. And people that we spoke to | :03:31. | :03:35.
today also recognise the work he has done. | :03:36. | :03:37.
He's actually personally helped me out in the past. | :03:38. | :03:41.
The only one who fights for us in Parliament. | :03:42. | :03:48.
there is a question a lot of people are going to be asking. We have not | :03:49. | :04:08.
been able to talk to Jamie Reed, but he has also got four children, and | :04:09. | :04:14.
does not like travelling to Westminster. Sharp operator. And he | :04:15. | :04:21.
knows that this is going to be seen as a taste for Jeremy Corbyn. It is | :04:22. | :04:27.
a rare opportunity for the Conservatives to take a Labour seat | :04:28. | :04:46.
since 1982. And a lot of Cumbria Lib Dems may try to mop up the Remain | :04:47. | :04:55.
vote. Ed Balls has been mentioned. More used to a fox trot. But tactics | :04:56. | :05:04.
are to choose someone local. The future of the hospital could be key. | :05:05. | :05:12.
But the locals better brace themselves, because that means | :05:13. | :05:16.
campaigns, politics, and media types like us. | :05:17. | :05:23.
A man who claims he was abused at a children's home has | :05:24. | :05:26.
been awarded thousands of pounds in compensation. | :05:27. | :05:27.
Hundreds of men are suing the Catholic Church over historical | :05:28. | :05:30.
abuse at the St Williams approved school in East Yorkshire, which was | :05:31. | :05:33.
Three other men today lost their case for compensation | :05:34. | :05:36.
at the High Court in Leeds and another will be | :05:37. | :05:39.
For these men, today's High Court judgement wasn't | :05:40. | :05:51.
It was the proof they needed that after over 30 years, | :05:52. | :05:57.
I still have to live with nightmares of this. | :05:58. | :06:08.
It's the worst feeling you can have, to be called a liar, | :06:09. | :06:11.
As boys they were delinquents who were sent to the Catholic run | :06:12. | :06:17.
St Williams approved school in East Yorkshire. | :06:18. | :06:20.
He was one of the boys the former principal, | :06:21. | :06:27.
He's been jailed three times now for physically and sexually | :06:28. | :06:30.
The former chaplin was jailed in January | :06:31. | :06:34.
The home was run by the Diocese of Middlesbrough and the Delacal Order. | :06:35. | :06:41.
It is these two Catholic organisations that the former | :06:42. | :06:44.
249 men are carrying out this litigation. | :06:45. | :06:51.
But it started with just five test cases. | :06:52. | :06:54.
Judgements handed down at the High Court in Leeds | :06:55. | :06:56.
The judge found only in favour of one claimant. | :06:57. | :07:01.
It's become a war of attrition, this case. | :07:02. | :07:10.
I'm confident the evidence I've heard, men crying | :07:11. | :07:12.
in my office about their cases, means we will succeed. | :07:13. | :07:19.
The last judgement in this case will be handed down in the new year. | :07:20. | :07:41.
1,400 people have now come forward to say | :07:42. | :07:43.
they were abused at the former Medomsley Detention | :07:44. | :07:45.
Durham Police's Operation Seabrook has been running for two and a half | :07:46. | :07:49.
years and it's spoken to around 20 suspects. | :07:50. | :07:51.
The investigation unit is looking at allegations of abuse | :07:52. | :07:53.
Our Correspondent Mark Denten is outside the former | :07:54. | :07:58.
Than Meadomsley centre closed 20 years ago, but before that it was a | :07:59. | :08:14.
crucial part of the criminal justice system. Dealing with what was known | :08:15. | :08:26.
as juvenile delinquents. Back at 1985, we were told that the | :08:27. | :08:31.
programme was simple. Physical exercise, team building, and hard | :08:32. | :08:36.
labour. What that was a front for some of the staff to abuse inmates. | :08:37. | :08:43.
And that has been reading to one of the biggest investigations of its | :08:44. | :08:45.
time. That was what Medomsley | :08:46. | :08:46.
Detention Centre promised. Boys sent here for minor offences | :08:47. | :08:50.
would be given three months, But many who walked in here have | :08:51. | :08:52.
suffered a much longer punishment. One that's stayed | :08:53. | :08:56.
with them for life. It's not the sort of | :08:57. | :08:58.
thing you talk about. I have a daughter I | :08:59. | :09:00.
want to cuddle, kiss. This is one of the staff | :09:01. | :09:05.
who abused Peter. Neville Husband was convicted | :09:06. | :09:24.
and he's now died. But Durham Police have since been | :09:25. | :09:27.
contacted by 1,400 people who say For two and a half years officers | :09:28. | :09:30.
have been painstakingly 20 suspects have been questioned, | :09:31. | :09:34.
but the sheer scale of this task Straight away, dealing | :09:35. | :09:40.
with 1,400 people. Pretty straightforward getting | :09:41. | :09:50.
an account, then it's We've been doing this | :09:51. | :10:00.
for two and a half years. But 30 years ago, expectations | :10:01. | :10:07.
of victims are I want justice, soon. Two and a half years | :10:08. | :10:19.
later, no conclusion. 30 years on, what went on behind | :10:20. | :10:22.
the security gates here is steadily A teenager's appeared in court | :10:23. | :10:26.
charged with the murder of a man The body of 29-year-old Mark Shaw | :10:27. | :10:41.
was found in an upstairs Kieran Adey, who's 18 | :10:42. | :10:45.
and from Queen Street in Grange Villa, appeared | :10:46. | :10:48.
at Peterlee Magistrates' Court Farmers in Cumbria have been able | :10:49. | :10:50.
to graze their animals on common But now some are worried | :10:51. | :10:58.
about their rights after we leave They want to form a Commons Council, | :10:59. | :11:02.
which they believe would give them a voice if there any changes | :11:03. | :11:06.
in the law following Brexit. Judy Hobson has been speaking | :11:07. | :11:09.
to one farmer in Orton. Like many farmers in Cumbria, | :11:10. | :11:13.
Mark's sheep and cattle It's an ancient right, | :11:14. | :11:16.
dating back to medieval times. Mark believes the rights | :11:17. | :11:23.
of commoners could be threatened We need a voice to support our side | :11:24. | :11:25.
of the story so it stays how it is, moves forwards, so it's good | :11:26. | :11:35.
for tourism and the environment. Still needs to be viable | :11:36. | :11:42.
for us farmers to farm. Common land can be owned | :11:43. | :11:46.
by individuals or an organisation. 82% of common land is | :11:47. | :11:49.
within national parks A third of all common land | :11:50. | :11:51.
in the UK is in Cumbria. 1,000 farmers in Cumbria use it | :11:52. | :12:00.
to graze their animals. Commoners are different | :12:01. | :12:04.
to other farmers. The EU pays them to | :12:05. | :12:06.
look after the land - to keep it viable for farming, | :12:07. | :12:08.
tourism and the environment. Many farmers see Brexit as a game | :12:09. | :12:15.
changer for their industry. They know the British Government | :12:16. | :12:17.
will have to develop its own Cumbrian farmers want | :12:18. | :12:20.
to form a Commons Council. It would mean decisions it made | :12:21. | :12:28.
would be legally binding and offer We don't want diseases from one | :12:29. | :12:30.
flock caught by another. Better doing that in a council | :12:31. | :12:41.
rather than everyone working solo. A third of land in the Lake District | :12:42. | :12:51.
is common land and commoners here say they want to continue | :12:52. | :12:54.
farming within this Unsurprisingly, Christmas | :12:55. | :12:56.
is the busiest time of year for small businesses, | :12:57. | :13:06.
but this year more than ever it's Concerns about the future | :13:07. | :13:08.
are affecting confidence and a new survey shows 15% of those | :13:09. | :13:11.
businesses won't capitalise Danni Hewson reports | :13:12. | :13:13.
from North Yorkshire. It's an Aladdin's cave | :13:14. | :13:21.
but it's not a shop - Based in Harrogate, | :13:22. | :13:24.
the Great British Exchange works as a go-between, | :13:25. | :13:27.
connecting independent producers to major retailers, | :13:28. | :13:31.
giving them access to a market that In the absence of these guys | :13:32. | :13:35.
having established brands, because they might be | :13:36. | :13:40.
new businesses, it's all about the prominence, | :13:41. | :13:42.
the background, it's Where the products were developed, | :13:43. | :13:46.
how they were developed, and ultimately send that message | :13:47. | :13:53.
to the retailers so they can This year more than ever, | :13:54. | :13:55.
Christmas sales matter. A fifth of all profits is usually | :13:56. | :13:59.
generated over the festive season, but a survey carried out | :14:00. | :14:02.
by independent finance provider LDF suggests the current political | :14:03. | :14:05.
situation will have an impact. A lack of confidence | :14:06. | :14:11.
at the moment with Brexit. People are starting | :14:12. | :14:14.
to wonder about next year - But with most of these companies | :14:15. | :14:16.
this is when they make Get this wrong, the rest of next | :14:17. | :14:22.
year they're playing catch up. While shoppers can get away | :14:23. | :14:26.
with making last minute purchases, suppliers need to think ahead | :14:27. | :14:32.
if they're going to make the most We're already planning | :14:33. | :14:35.
next Christmas. We already booked shows, | :14:36. | :14:39.
events, Christmas 2017. The founders of the Harrogate | :14:40. | :14:44.
Candle Company aren't Their involvement with | :14:45. | :14:49.
the Great British Exchange has seen them adopted by a big | :14:50. | :14:56.
British department store. Business is booming but three years | :14:57. | :14:59.
ago it was a different story. Pulled round the trolley, | :15:00. | :15:04.
knocked doors, horribly Ultimately it will be consumers | :15:05. | :15:07.
who write the end of this Will it be full of festive cheer or | :15:08. | :15:21.
will the January blues come early? The County Durham poet and creative | :15:22. | :15:30.
writing teacher Gillian Allnutt will be honoured by the Queen next | :15:31. | :15:33.
year after winning Born in the London in 1949, | :15:34. | :15:35.
she spent much of her childhood in Newcastle before studying | :15:36. | :15:39.
at Cambridge University. She's lived in County Durham | :15:40. | :15:41.
since the 1980s where she writes You're watching | :15:42. | :15:43.
Wednesday's Look North. Still to come: Tonight's sports | :15:44. | :15:53.
news with Jeff Brown. Also, how this little dog's | :15:54. | :15:55.
adventures on the Lake District Fells have captured the imagination | :15:56. | :15:59.
of people around the world! And these donkeys are more little to | :16:00. | :16:15.
see a wet and windy Christmas than a white one! | :16:16. | :16:22.
Now, as we approach the festive period, we thought it would be nice | :16:23. | :16:25.
to highlight some of those who think of others rather than themselves. | :16:26. | :16:28.
Tonight we meet the women who've got together to collect toiletries | :16:29. | :16:31.
and other items which will be put into handbags and given to women | :16:32. | :16:34.
The majority of women would take all of these things for granted. | :16:35. | :16:50.
But for those who are homeless, vulnerable, or simply | :16:51. | :16:52.
struggling to make ends meet, sanitary and personal hygeine | :16:53. | :16:54.
prodicts can be at the end of a very long list of things they need | :16:55. | :16:57.
So Gill has set up a project which this Christmas will give | :16:58. | :17:07.
handbags packed with these goods to charities, who will then pass | :17:08. | :17:09.
them onto women to help them get through the next month with dignity. | :17:10. | :17:13.
She was inspire by a Facebook post, depicting a homeless | :17:14. | :17:16.
I thought it was upsetting. I did more research. And I find out that | :17:17. | :17:42.
there was a need to do this. Sanitary products are classed as | :17:43. | :17:53.
luxury in the UK. Taxed at 5%. I think it is essential to try to | :17:54. | :17:54.
help. With an initial goal of just over | :17:55. | :17:57.
1,000 bags to give out, Gill says it's more likely | :17:58. | :18:01.
to be 3,000. But I am also a Joanne's house. One | :18:02. | :18:12.
of 40 people collecting these vital items. These are some of the | :18:13. | :18:18.
donations that we have received. Toothpaste, soap, foot... And one of | :18:19. | :18:27.
the amazing things that has been done, women coming together. It is | :18:28. | :18:38.
not just about helping the homeless? It has created a huge network of | :18:39. | :18:40.
women, spreading awareness. And what has this meant to you? I cannot put | :18:41. | :18:50.
that into words. It has been heart-warming. Fit to burst! I | :18:51. | :18:59.
cannot put it into words. I just feel overwhelmed by the number of | :19:00. | :19:08.
bags that have come in. The generosity of people, but also sad | :19:09. | :19:15.
it is needed. I have started this, people have said it is such a | :19:16. | :19:19.
wonderful job that I am doing, but why should we have to do this? | :19:20. | :19:28.
When Kerry Irving began taking pictures of his dog Max | :19:29. | :19:30.
and sharing them online, little did he realise that | :19:31. | :19:32.
within months his dog would become so popular he'd be known | :19:33. | :19:35.
Max's adventures on the Lake District Fells have drawn fans | :19:36. | :19:38.
to the area from as far afield as Hong Kong and Taiwan. | :19:39. | :19:41.
Max is a lucky boy - a nine-year-old springer living | :19:42. | :19:49.
with Keswick locksmith Kerry and enjoying himself in some | :19:50. | :19:52.

Gets recognised in the towns from locals to tourists, every day. | :20:04. | :20:06.
Every day Kerry chronicles Max's adventures: Taking and posting | :20:07. | :20:11.
pictures on his very own Facebook page. | :20:12. | :20:16.
Over the course of the last eight months or so, Max has been seen | :20:17. | :20:20.
on some of the area's tallest peaks and frolicking on the most | :20:21. | :20:23.
It's this that has made him a social media star. | :20:24. | :20:28.
We've had people from the USA, Taiwan, Japan, the scout group | :20:29. | :20:32.
from Hong Kong arrive to have a photo shoot. | :20:33. | :20:38.
People from all over the world send messages daily | :20:39. | :20:40.
Almost 13,000 people are following Max online. | :20:41. | :20:49.
But Kerry doesn't just want Max to chase peoples' affections - | :20:50. | :20:51.
he's hoping his profile can really improve access to his | :20:52. | :20:54.
We've got involved with a charity called Freedom Wizard who have taken | :20:55. | :21:01.
They have altered wheelchairs for disabled people, opening up | :21:02. | :21:06.
We've done this successfully with a lady from Sheffield. | :21:07. | :21:13.
She came up to Latrigg after never being there for 30 years. | :21:14. | :21:18.
So much fun and I'd like to do more of that. | :21:19. | :21:25.
If you want to look Max up, go online and search for Max Out | :21:26. | :21:29.
Little star! Does the dog have lighting!? Looks better than us! Do | :21:30. | :21:55.
not say that! It'll be a very special | :21:56. | :21:58.
Christmas for fans of one Darlington will make | :21:59. | :22:00.
their long-awaited return to the town on Boxing Day, | :22:01. | :22:03.
four years after the The new club has been steadily | :22:04. | :22:05.
climbing the leagues while in exile in Bishop Auckland, | :22:06. | :22:08.
and their new ?1 million They have had a new stadium before, | :22:09. | :22:18.
it had 27,000 seats, and the chairman was famously proud of the | :22:19. | :22:26.
facilities. It is state of the art. But it has gone badly wrong. The new | :22:27. | :22:35.
ground is more modest. It is a programme and for myself and | :22:36. | :22:40.
everybody involved. Fan owned. Everybody played a part. It feels as | :22:41. | :22:48.
though Santa Claus has, Lally, the present for Darlington. It has a | :22:49. | :22:53.
capacity of 3300. It is going to share it with the Darlington rugby | :22:54. | :23:03.
club. Four year exile since the original Darlington went bust. The | :23:04. | :23:08.
architecture has been easy. We have got the clubhouse, just designing | :23:09. | :23:19.
the stands, the fencing, turnstiles, and everything to comply with the | :23:20. | :23:22.
Football Association. What is this going to mean to the table? It is | :23:23. | :23:34.
vital. Vital they come back to Darlington and fans can get here. | :23:35. | :23:43.
Nod to the past as well. Steelwork comes from the old ground. It is | :23:44. | :23:48.
expected when the team comes out against Halifax on Boxing Day, going | :23:49. | :23:57.
to be greeted by a capacity crowd. Just two promotions away from the | :23:58. | :24:01.
Football League. But having the team back at Darlington is a signal of it | :24:02. | :24:08.
instead -- step in the rebirth. Switching to Rugby Union, | :24:09. | :24:10.
but staying with sports grounds, and Newcastle United have moved | :24:11. | :24:12.
a step closer to bringing the European club game's showpiece | :24:13. | :24:14.
weekend to St James's Park The club confirmed today it's | :24:15. | :24:17.

or identity of rival bids. They'll all now receive a site | :24:36. | :24:38.

travel to Hunslet. Thank you. Shall we mention this | :24:58. | :25:08.
storm...? Friday! We have some of the festive weather | :25:09. | :25:27.
pictures. And it would not be Christmas without some donkeys! | :25:28. | :25:35.
These Northumberland donkeys! Tomorrow, it is going to be sunny | :25:36. | :25:41.
spells and scattered showers. And things becoming even more unsettled, | :25:42. | :25:54.
stormy weather. Wet. Very windy. But mild, especially Christmas Day. This | :25:55. | :25:58.
evening, scattered showers, becoming more widespread over the early hours | :25:59. | :26:06.
of the morning. And at lower levels, going to be fuelling cold. One, two, | :26:07. | :26:17.
too much wind to allow frost. The itself, it is a mixture of sunny | :26:18. | :26:24.
spells and scattered showers. Wintry over higher ground. Becoming fewer | :26:25. | :26:31.
and farther between, but it is never going to feel warm. Seven, eight at | :26:32. | :26:39.
best. Westerly wind. An eye on the wind... And we can see the storm, | :26:40. | :26:46.
coming from the Atlantic and the wet weather is just going to be brief. | :26:47. | :26:56.
Quieter spell before another Atlantic low. Wet and windy for | :26:57. | :27:03.
Christmas Day. Some Met Office warnings. Friday, heavy rain passing | :27:04. | :27:14.
through. Should clear by the end. Gusty winds. And those continue, | :27:15. | :27:20.
westerly overnight. Christmas Eve is going to be quieter, largely dry. | :27:21. | :27:29.
Rain for many from the west. Christmas Day itself, mild. I | :27:30. | :27:40.
thought my children were going to bring the roof down, so hyper! | :27:41. | :27:43.
Always inside! Thank you. Bye bye. The roads we walk have demons | :27:44. | :27:54.
beneath them... ..and yours have been waiting | :27:55. | :27:59.
for a very long time. What is this? We can't do this. | :28:00. | :28:05.
Is this supposed to be a game? I thought this was some | :28:06. | :28:13.
kind of... What? ..trick. Of course it's not a trick. | :28:14. | :28:15.
It's a plan. What's the very worst thing | :28:16. | :28:17.
you can do... | :28:18. | :28:21. |
