Welcome to Tuesday's Look North. news teams where you are.

:00:00.:00:10.

In tonight's headlines - back in the big time.

:00:11.:00:13.

Jubilant fans celebrate as Newcastle United are promoted

:00:14.:00:15.

We have the hardest part. We need to look forward to next season back in

:00:16.:00:29.

the top flight. And we'll Rafa Benitez still be around? I will be

:00:30.:00:31.

live from St James' Park. Also tonight, hundreds of jobs

:00:32.:00:34.

at risk at two Nestle plants as production potentially

:00:35.:00:39.

moves to Poland. Homes evacuated and road and rail

:00:40.:00:40.

services disrupted as a huge factory And life behind the

:00:41.:00:43.

facade of grandeur. The harsh reality of

:00:44.:00:46.

running a stately pile. They've done it, at

:00:47.:01:06.

the first time of asking. have secured a place

:01:07.:01:09.

in the Premier League next season, after a 4-1 victory

:01:10.:01:12.

against Preston North End in The win brings a real sense

:01:13.:01:15.

of pride back to the city, with the promise of top-flight clubs

:01:16.:01:20.

playing against the Magpies, but will it be with Rafa Benitez

:01:21.:01:26.

in charge? Jeff Brown is live for us outside

:01:27.:01:28.

St James Park tonight. That question about the future of

:01:29.:01:36.

Rafa Benitez is one will try to answer in a few minutes. Let's turn

:01:37.:01:41.

the clock back 24 hours to a night that wasn't without some notes for

:01:42.:01:45.

the Newcastle fans. But Newcastle safely came through it, and then the

:01:46.:01:49.

celebrations began. A mixture of total joy

:01:50.:01:53.

and relief for fans Back where we belong, where we

:01:54.:02:04.

should be. We have done the hardest part. We just need to enjoy it and

:02:05.:02:09.

look forward to season back in the top flight.

:02:10.:02:11.

The promotion party kicked off in the seventh minute

:02:12.:02:13.

with Ayoze Perez's opener which seemed to go in off his elbow!

:02:14.:02:16.

But Preston weren't sticking to the script.

:02:17.:02:17.

They equalised just seven minutes later and controlled large parts

:02:18.:02:20.

But this classic counterattacking goal from Christian Atsu

:02:21.:02:25.

just before half-time sent Newcastle on their way.

:02:26.:02:30.

In the second half, the most blatant of handballs

:02:31.:02:34.

and red cards led to Matt Ritchie's penalty.

:02:35.:02:39.

Job done for Newcastle United this season. The question now is whether

:02:40.:02:55.

the club can become a force in the Premier League once again and

:02:56.:02:57.

whether Rafael Benitez will stay on at St James' Park.

:02:58.:03:00.

And he was asked that very question in his

:03:01.:03:02.

You never know. That is football. I am really pleased the, very happy

:03:03.:03:12.

and proud with what we have achieved. If Mr Ashley treats him

:03:13.:03:17.

nice and gives money to spend on players there was no better man to

:03:18.:03:20.

take the club forward than Rafa Benitez. We need some good players

:03:21.:03:24.

and we will be absolutely fine with Benitez. The scenes were telling at

:03:25.:03:32.

the end, it showed what a job he has done getting the fans back. That is

:03:33.:03:37.

back and there is an opportunity now for the club to back the manager,

:03:38.:03:42.

and get this club back to competing at the right end of the Premier

:03:43.:03:45.

League. And hopefully he will be given the opportunity to do that.

:03:46.:03:49.

Well there's a real feel-good factor around Newcastle right now.

:03:50.:03:51.

Much of that is, clearly, due to the fact the Magpies

:03:52.:03:54.

are heading back to the Premier League.

:03:55.:03:55.

But as City Council leader Nick Forbes pointed out,

:03:56.:03:58.

There is a real sense that Newcastle is a city on the up. Not just the

:03:59.:04:07.

club going into the Premier League, we have the great exhibition of the

:04:08.:04:11.

North in 2018, we have the Rugby World Cup, we have the Magic Weekend

:04:12.:04:15.

coming up in a few weeks. It's a great place with lots of fantastic

:04:16.:04:18.

things happening. This is just the icing on the cake.

:04:19.:04:22.

So - lots to look forward to, including the return of some

:04:23.:04:25.

of football's biggest names to St James' Park next season.

:04:26.:04:28.

A question for the Mirror's north-east football

:04:29.:04:31.

He was very enigmatic last night. It was a stranger into the game 30

:04:32.:04:42.

minutes after promotion. I'm 90% confident that he will be there but

:04:43.:04:46.

his comment was a power play. He needs enough power to rebuild the

:04:47.:04:50.

squad like you did last summer to be fit for the Premier League. He is

:04:51.:04:54.

not a man who wants to stand still and just get survival, he wants to

:04:55.:04:58.

push on and maybe get top ten. That is his aim. He is not hanging

:04:59.:05:04.

around. Mike Ashley, the owner, seven years today since Newcastle

:05:05.:05:09.

won promotion on the Chris Hughton, lifted the championship trophy and

:05:10.:05:11.

then Mike Ashley had sat Chris Hughton. There have been no

:05:12.:05:17.

congratulations yet but I'm sure he is just that the club is back in the

:05:18.:05:21.

Premier League. Rafa Benitez will not be getting sacked this summer or

:05:22.:05:26.

any time. He has got to be a long term appointment for the next couple

:05:27.:05:30.

of years. He has got to put foundations in to make a lasting

:05:31.:05:32.

stay in the Premier League this time. Money has to be spent even

:05:33.:05:37.

though they got back at the first time of asking it is not a Premier

:05:38.:05:40.

League squad. You would say maybe That's all from the team here for

:05:41.:05:44.

now. Goodbye. Players from Matt Seymour Stein, he will need seven

:05:45.:05:49.

new first team players. It will cost ?100 million, maybe. Whether he will

:05:50.:05:55.

get that, he can sell some members of that squad and make a good profit

:05:56.:05:58.

but he has got to buy some players and the prices are huge these days.

:05:59.:06:07.

Simon, thank you for joining us. We will have the rest of the sports

:06:08.:06:09.

News later with Carol. Homes have been evacuated,

:06:10.:06:19.

roads closed and rail services have been suspended after a major fire

:06:20.:06:21.

at an industrial estate Fire Services were called

:06:22.:06:24.

to the Glasson Industrial Estate in Maryport this afternoon as flames

:06:25.:06:27.

spread through a building containing A short time ago Megan Paterson

:06:28.:06:30.

sent us this report. A funnel of thick black smoke

:06:31.:06:40.

visible for more than 30 miles Fire crews were called here

:06:41.:06:43.

to Maryport at 1.30 this afternoon, No-one was injured but very quickly

:06:44.:06:51.

homes and businesses surrounding the industrial

:06:52.:06:57.

estate were evacuated. I was making a cup of tea. I got a

:06:58.:07:04.

shout from Okolie to say that there was a fire outside. I saw that it

:07:05.:07:10.

was in the yard next door. To be honest, there were two five Rangers

:07:11.:07:15.

already here. It looked as though they had it under control. It was

:07:16.:07:20.

then just so quick. That spread of smoke closed

:07:21.:07:22.

a section of A596 between Flimby and Maryport and trains running

:07:23.:07:25.

on the nearby coastal line 12 fire crews and support

:07:26.:07:27.

from nearby Sellafield were called in to try and control

:07:28.:07:31.

the smoke and flames. This is war a significant incident.

:07:32.:07:41.

As you can see behind me we are still working hard to bring the fire

:07:42.:07:46.

under control. We have a lot of fire servers resources on the scene at

:07:47.:07:50.

this moment in time. We will be here for another number of hours, through

:07:51.:07:55.

the evening and possibly even into tomorrow.

:07:56.:07:59.

The fire's destroyed a storage building

:08:00.:08:00.

which belongs to SIS, a company which makes artificial

:08:01.:08:02.

sports pitches which are installed all over Europe.

:08:03.:08:04.

The cause of the fire is still unclear.

:08:05.:08:06.

The priority tonight is controlling it to allow

:08:07.:08:08.

The dangers of house parties is the subject

:08:09.:08:20.

of a new hard-hitting video aimed at students in Newcastle.

:08:21.:08:23.

It's a response to growing concerns about the risks revellers take

:08:24.:08:25.

when organising large scale parties in terraced houses in the city.

:08:26.:08:28.

Newcastle's known for being a party city -

:08:29.:08:39.

That is what Jesmond is about, the house parties. If you don't want to

:08:40.:08:52.

go out and spend money it is a lot cheaper. You might be drunk so you

:08:53.:08:57.

kind of forget, it is not on your mind that it probably is dangerous

:08:58.:08:58.

whilst you are there. And that's exactly why a series

:08:59.:09:02.

of short films have been made to make students aware

:09:03.:09:05.

of what could go horribly The video campaign is a partnership

:09:06.:09:07.

between the emergency services and the City Council,

:09:08.:09:17.

who say they're not trying We don't to stop them

:09:18.:09:19.

having a good time. We do want to try and keep them safe

:09:20.:09:30.

and make them understand the risks that they are putting themselves at.

:09:31.:09:34.

We're lucky we have not had a major incident at one of these parties.

:09:35.:09:38.

But all parties feel that it is if but when scenario.

:09:39.:09:40.

It's the students parties here in Jesmond and nearby in Heaton,

:09:41.:09:43.

which are attracting the most attention, because some of them

:09:44.:09:45.

are really big organised affairs with hundreds of revellers,

:09:46.:09:48.

DJs, sound systems and even bouncers on the doors.

:09:49.:09:52.

Police say they are like nightclubs in terraced houses.

:09:53.:09:59.

They are not built to withstand that number of people. They don't have

:10:00.:10:05.

the fire safety considerations in place. What we have found sometimes

:10:06.:10:09.

is that to suppress the noise students have been putting coverage

:10:10.:10:15.

across the doors and windows, thereby blocking entrances and

:10:16.:10:19.

exits, so if fire was to break out you could potentially have an

:10:20.:10:20.

horrendous situation. It's social media that

:10:21.:10:22.

spreads the party word. And it's hoped it'll also

:10:23.:10:25.

play its part in sharing Newcastle councillors

:10:26.:10:28.

have voted to implement a Public Protection Order

:10:29.:10:37.

against antisocial behaviour. The order will give enforcement

:10:38.:10:39.

officers the power to administer a ?100 on-the-spot fine

:10:40.:10:44.

for begging, street drinking, and even charity collectors,

:10:45.:10:48.

often known as chuggers. Sunderland Council implemented

:10:49.:10:50.

the scheme earlier this month. Today is the last day

:10:51.:10:51.

of the public consultation into the planned closure

:10:52.:10:56.

of a community hospital The proposal would see the doors

:10:57.:10:58.

close for good at the 12-bed

:10:59.:11:03.

inpatient ward at Rothbury. Patient services which currently

:11:04.:11:05.

exist would then be shaped around which would be created

:11:06.:11:07.

on the site of the hospital. A bed and breakfast

:11:08.:11:15.

in Northumberland's won a national St Cuthbert's House in Seahouses has

:11:16.:11:17.

been awarded gold in the Bed Breakfast category

:11:18.:11:22.

of the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2017,

:11:23.:11:24.

repeating their success of 2014. Owners Jeff and Jill Sutheran said

:11:25.:11:28.

they were "honoured and delighted". Political parties face a race

:11:29.:11:35.

against time to select candidates for the region's key

:11:36.:11:39.

general election seats. Theresa May's surprise

:11:40.:11:41.

announcement of a vote have had to speed up the normal

:11:42.:11:43.

candidate selection process. Tonight, Conservative

:11:44.:11:47.

members meet in Darlington to pick their challenger

:11:48.:11:50.

for the hotly-contested constituency, with other parties

:11:51.:11:53.

expected to pick contenders for their target seats

:11:54.:11:56.

by the end of the week. Our political correspondent

:11:57.:11:58.

Luke Walton joins me now. How much of a headache

:11:59.:12:02.

is this election timetable? And there's extra pressure of course

:12:03.:12:07.

because the parties are already campaigning for the council

:12:08.:12:15.

and mayoral elections taking place So they are having to fight on two

:12:16.:12:17.

fronts and to squeeze candidate selections that would normally take

:12:18.:12:26.

months into a few weeks. And all this is happening

:12:27.:12:29.

in what seem to be very The opinion polls put

:12:30.:12:31.

things for Labour. Four Labour MPs in this

while the Greens expect to have selected a full slate

of candidates by the weekend. When will we get the full list

:14:39.:14:46.

could only ever dream of owning. But life here at Newby Hall is far

:14:47.:14:50.

from what many might expect. These days, it is more

:14:51.:14:54.

a case of beans on toast Richard Compton inherited

:14:55.:15:00.

Newby Hall 18 years ago. And while his ancestors lived

:15:01.:15:09.

in all of its 100 rooms, today's living arrangements

:15:10.:15:12.

are very different. The reality is, this

:15:13.:15:16.

is where we live. This is our kitchen and thank God

:15:17.:15:22.

for the Aga, it keeps us warm. The sitting room is next door

:15:23.:15:25.

and the bedroom is there. We obviously look after the place

:15:26.:15:28.

for everybody to enjoy. Although Newby Hall attracts 140,000

visitors per year, profits The annual electricity bill

of the rooms of concern. Upstairs you have

:16:15.:16:15.

what condition the rooms are below? It causes anxiety and let's hope it

might be moved to Poland. The company insists that the move

:16:54.:16:56.

from Nestle's factory Almost the only job is be lost if

:16:57.:17:15.

this proposal goes ahead. The plan could see Nestle moving production

:17:16.:17:18.

of the Blue Riband bar to Poland, from Fawdon. 166 jobs in total are

:17:19.:17:29.

under threat in York. The rest of the 300 jobs are at locations in

:17:30.:17:33.

Yorkshire and in Scotland. The plans have been criticised by trade

:17:34.:17:37.

unions, Unite and the GMB have said they do not approve of this

:17:38.:17:42.

proposal. The GMB says that Nestle should be exporting chocolate and

:17:43.:17:46.

not jobs. Its representative in Ewok says many members now are feeling

:17:47.:17:50.

uncertain about their future. Lots of people are really worried.

:17:51.:17:53.

Obviously there is uncertainty as to whether they are going to be

:17:54.:17:56.

affected by job losses. People who quite possibly will not be losing

:17:57.:18:03.

jobs through redundancy, there are real uncertainty as to what the seat

:18:04.:18:08.

-- to what the future holds. It is an ageing workforce and people

:18:09.:18:13.

finding work in this economic climate is difficult anyway but when

:18:14.:18:16.

you're of a certain age, it is a really more difficult. Nestle has

:18:17.:18:22.

released a statement in which says that the proposals are being made to

:18:23.:18:27.

ensure that its sites operate more efficiently and remain competitive

:18:28.:18:30.

in a rapidly changing external environment. It stresses that at the

:18:31.:18:34.

Memphis is just a proposal and nothing has been decided and if the

:18:35.:18:38.

plans go ahead, it would expect any job losses to be taken up through

:18:39.:18:41.

voluntary redundancies. It is stressing that this decision has

:18:42.:18:46.

nothing to do with this country's decision to leave the EU.

:18:47.:18:57.

Time now to put one of the candidates who wants

:18:58.:19:00.

to be Tees Valley mayor through the mincer again.

:19:01.:19:05.

Voters will decide on May 4th who should take on the new role,

:19:06.:19:08.

overseeing everything from transport to training in Hartlepool,

:19:09.:19:10.

But our political editor Richard Moss is also grilling them

:19:11.:19:13.

on how much they know about the area.

:19:14.:19:16.

Here's part two of our Mayoral Mastermind.

:19:17.:19:25.

Things are sizzling at this diner in Middlesbrough. Don't get distracted

:19:26.:19:30.

by the look of those chips, it is time for a second contender to be

:19:31.:19:39.

quizzed on the area for my makeshift mayoral mastermind. You have 90

:19:40.:19:44.

seconds on Teesside, starting round about now. How much per year will be

:19:45.:19:50.

the investment plan you will control? ?15 million. Which

:19:51.:19:53.

Australian landmark was famously built with Teesside steel? Sydney

:19:54.:19:59.

Harbour Bridge. Redcar boasts the world's oldest surviving lifeboat

:20:00.:20:11.

but what is it called? Boaty McBoatface. It is actually called

:20:12.:20:18.

Zetland. Which footballing legend began his managerial career at

:20:19.:20:30.

Hartlepool in 1965? Pass. OK. What would you be getting if I offered

:20:31.:20:39.

you a fadgy? Cigarette? Sadly not, it is a bread roll. What year did

:20:40.:20:47.

Teesside get his university? 1995? 1992, I'm afraid. Which Teesside has

:20:48.:20:51.

been on the road to hell and on the beach? It as a singer. Is it Crhis

:20:52.:21:04.

Rea? It is. Which former Cabinet minister was once MP for Darlington?

:21:05.:21:07.

Temperament. According to a report by North Yorkshire Trading

:21:08.:21:15.

Standards, how much calories are in a large Teesside... 1900? 2005. You

passed on the football legend who began his manager career at

:21:22.:21:27.

Hartlepool in 1965 and that is Brian Clough Trophy and you passed on the

:21:28.:21:32.

picture, of the actor, Stephen Tomkinson. But he did score four

:21:33.:21:40.

points. Not a star score but enough to take the lead. How did he find

:21:41.:21:47.

it? Daunting. Certainly there are some things I need to brush up on.

:21:48.:21:51.

One thing I want to see happening is that we get designated status. We

:21:52.:21:56.

need to be proud of the area where we live. Two down, two to go, and

:21:57.:22:06.

the conservative sneaks ahead of the Lib Dem. Remember that and intimate

:22:07.:22:13.

knowledge of the music of Chris Rea is not a requirement for the mayoral

:22:14.:22:19.

candidate, that is just for fun. We will have more mastermind tomorrow.

:22:20.:22:26.

I don't want to show off about my score, of course!

:22:27.:22:28.

Now, we've already heard all about Newcastle United's return

:22:29.:22:31.

We're going back to St James' Park now for the rest

:22:32.:22:34.

A bit quieter than last night, Jeff?

:22:35.:22:37.

I am hoping that it warns up by the time we had to Middlesbrough

:22:38.:22:55.

tomorrow for the Tees Wear derby. Last night Rafa Benitez laptop

:22:56.:22:58.

applause from the 50,000 crowd who was slept well knowing that the

:22:59.:23:02.

magpies are back in the big-time. Hartlepool are to drop out of the

:23:03.:23:08.

football league the first time in their history. And their fate is now

:23:09.:23:13.

in the hands of former Middlesbrough defender Matthew Bates. It is only

:23:14.:23:19.

32 miles between Newcastle and Hartlepool, but the gulf in mood is

:23:20.:23:25.

vast. Newcastle elated by promotion, Hartlepool two points from safety,

:23:26.:23:30.

second from bottom, two games to save its league status. And yet the

:23:31.:23:34.

caretaker manager is quietly determined. The chairman is

:23:35.:23:39.

thinking, two games to go, can we get a reaction, change the manager?

:23:40.:23:44.

And that is what you need. What a performance like this, the 2-0 home

:23:45.:23:52.

defeat to Barnet after which Dave Jones was sacked, suggests that a

:23:53.:23:55.

Herculean effort is required to avoid the drop. The stand-in manager

:23:56.:24:00.

is putting an issue. I have enjoyed it, day to day over the last couple

:24:01.:24:05.

of days, long days, no sleep and buy food, but I have enjoyed it, and the

:24:06.:24:11.

staff are alongside me, as one. That is the manager, but what is the

:24:12.:24:18.

press's take? Saturday and Sunday, they have a 10% chance, and now you

:24:19.:24:24.

have got to look at a 40-50% chance. The place, the atmosphere around the

:24:25.:24:28.

club has changed in the last 48 hours. A big cloud has been lifted

:24:29.:24:33.

from the players. The last two games are against Cheltenham and

:24:34.:24:36.

Doncaster, two famous racing pounds. Fingers crossed for a relegation

:24:37.:24:46.

avoiding double. Fingers crossed for Hartlepool and for Spennymoor, who

:24:47.:24:55.

will not be playing Workington Reds who went out to Stanley Bridge last

:24:56.:25:03.

night in extra time. I was expecting snow this morning, Paul. There were

:25:04.:25:07.

some bits and pieces of snow. I was going to say that there were four

:25:08.:25:12.

seasons in one day, but there was no sign of summer! Some wintry showers

:25:13.:25:18.

pictured off the Northumberland coast. It looks picturesque when you

:25:19.:25:22.

see them in the distance. This was Carlisle this afternoon. Sleet,

:25:23.:25:25.

snow, you name it and it was falling. Finally, the northerly wind

:25:26.:25:33.

picked up some big seas down the North East coast. This was the coast

:25:34.:25:38.

of Durham this afternoon. Tomorrow, a little bit quieter with some

:25:39.:25:42.

wintry showers around but not as many as today. More runaway of

:25:43.:25:46.

sunshine. We still have a northerly wind making it feel bitterly cold.

:25:47.:25:50.

It will feel bitterly cold again tonight with wintry showers and

:25:51.:25:58.

eastern areas, Cumbria, largely dry, clear and cold. Temperatures bounty

:25:59.:26:02.

roundabout minus one Celsius in some places, maybe some sports and

:26:03.:26:06.

Cumbria a bit colder than that. Even though it is cloudier further east

:26:07.:26:09.

with very showers, temperatures never far away from freezing. Still

:26:10.:26:13.

feeling rather, in those northerly winds. Tomorrow, still some wintry

:26:14.:26:20.

showers in eastern areas. Cumbria looks like staying mostly dry and

:26:21.:26:24.

bright through the day. Showers, becoming few and far between in the

:26:25.:26:28.

afternoon. Most places ending the day, dry and sunny but not warm, 10

:26:29.:26:33.

Celsius at best, with the wind coming from that cold, northerly

:26:34.:26:38.

direction. It will feel slightly less cold than it did if you were

:26:39.:26:42.

out and about today. That is the picture for tomorrow. High pressure

:26:43.:26:47.

out of the West. This weather system coming from the north and bringing

:26:48.:26:51.

thicker cloud and rain at times. Then high pressure builds again as

:26:52.:26:55.

we head towards the weekend. Friday and Saturday generally dry and

:26:56.:26:59.

bright and more importantly, having bright and more importantly, having

:27:00.:27:02.

lost that strong, northerly wind, a bit less cold. As we heard through

:27:03.:27:10.

Wednesday Thursday, a cloudy day on Thursday, with temperatures milder

:27:11.:27:14.

but most places seeing some rain at times. Friday and Saturday, mostly

:27:15.:27:20.

dry. Temperatures in the low teens at best. It will feel less cold than

:27:21.:27:24.

it has been recently. But still something of a nip in the air

:27:25.:27:28.

underneath that clown. That is how it is looking for the next few days.

:27:29.:27:37.

-- underneath that cloud. It is playing havoc with the wardrobe. I

:27:38.:27:43.

blame you! OK, that's all for now. Goodbye.

:27:44.:27:47.
