Good evening. for the news where you are. | :00:12. | :00:12.
They've travelled 5,000 miles to the United States for the surgery | :00:13. | :00:14.
Five-year-old Finley Ingles from Middlesbrough has | :00:15. | :00:20.
a rare brain tumour, which can't be operated | :00:21. | :00:22.
Stuart Whincup sent this report from Texas. | :00:23. | :00:31.
After years of planning and tireless fundraising, | :00:32. | :00:35.
This trip, they say, is Finley's last hope. | :00:36. | :00:53.
Finley's brain tumour can't be removed in the UK | :00:54. | :00:55.
because it is too deep, so surgeons here at Texas Children's | :00:56. | :00:58.
Hospital will now use lasers to try and shrink it. | :00:59. | :01:00.
It's everything, absolutely everything. | :01:01. | :01:01.
I cannot put into words just how much Finley needs this surgery. | :01:02. | :01:05.
It will change his life, and it's what we hoped for for months. | :01:06. | :01:10.
But it's still quite nerve-racking to know that you're | :01:11. | :01:12.
going to hand your child over for a procedure. | :01:13. | :01:17.
Finley's online fundraising campaign started slowly, | :01:18. | :01:22.
but support quickly grew as across Teesside people | :01:23. | :01:26.
Since leaving the UK a fortnight ago Finley has had daily tests, | :01:27. | :01:41.
Entire days have been spent in waiting rooms. | :01:42. | :01:47.
But he does have a way of passing the time. | :01:48. | :01:49.
# Yeah, Bob the builder | :01:50. | :01:52.
More than 1500 people donated to Finley's fundraising cause, | :01:53. | :01:59.
so he could travel from Teesside to Texas for this surgery. | :02:00. | :02:03.
And as well as the big cheques from local businesses, | :02:04. | :02:06.
there were his classmates and school friends who donated | :02:07. | :02:08.
All so Finley could have the surgery that his family believes | :02:09. | :02:20.
If you come across him, he's an amazing little boy, | :02:21. | :02:24.
He just trundles on through it all, you know? | :02:25. | :02:29.
Seizure after seizure, appointment after appointment - | :02:30. | :02:31.
And we can't ask anything more of him, really. | :02:32. | :02:36.
The Prime Minister has insisted she remains fully committed to plans | :02:37. | :02:54.
for a new nuclear power station next to Sellafield, amid growing | :02:55. | :02:58.
Theresa May was in the Cumbrian constituency of Copeland ahead | :02:59. | :03:01.
But she refused to be drawn on whether the Government will match | :03:02. | :03:07.
Labour's pledge to underwrite the proposed plant at Moorside. | :03:08. | :03:10.
Yesterday, the scheme's main investor, Toshiba, | :03:11. | :03:11.
said it would look to sell its stake before construction began. | :03:12. | :03:16.
It is the Conservative government that is putting | :03:17. | :03:18.
It is the Conservative government that has agreed new nuclear build. | :03:19. | :03:25.
We recognise the importance of nuclear. | :03:26. | :03:28.
Jeremy Corbyn was asked five times in one interview to back Moorside | :03:29. | :03:31.
It is the Conservative government who recognises the importance | :03:32. | :03:36.
of Moorside and the nuclear industry in the UK. | :03:37. | :03:41.
Labour has accused the Prime Minister of ducking vital questions | :03:42. | :03:43.
about new nuclear jobs in West Cumbria and the future | :03:44. | :03:48.
A full list of candidates in the Copeland by-election | :03:49. | :03:53.
A wealthy businessman has told a court that claims he abused boys | :03:54. | :03:59.
75-year-old Colin Gregg, from Gosforth in Newcastle, | :04:00. | :04:03.
is accused of indecently assaulting four boys over a period | :04:04. | :04:08.
Giving evidence at Leeds Crown Court he denied all the allegations. | :04:09. | :04:12.
When asked by his barrister if he had ever sexually abused | :04:13. | :04:15.
The court has heard Colin Gregg, a former head teacher, | :04:16. | :04:21.
had helped build the Gregg's bakery chain and raise millions | :04:22. | :04:24.
He denies nine counts of indecent assault on boys aged 10 to 14, | :04:25. | :04:28.
Teachers in Cumbria say plans to scrap the county's school nurses | :04:29. | :04:36.
The council says its six school nurses are unaffordable. | :04:37. | :04:41.
It's replacing them with a service based in Carlisle, and schools | :04:42. | :04:44.
will have to pay for it from their existing budgets. | :04:45. | :04:47.
Here's our News Correspondent, Mark Denten. | :04:48. | :04:52.
The school nurse, often cheaply dubbed the nit nurse, | :04:53. | :04:55.
but only ever behind her back, used to be a key part | :04:56. | :04:58.
Cumbria still has 11 of them for its 69,000 | :04:59. | :05:02.
The council says the ?927,000 service is unaffordable. | :05:03. | :05:07.
It is being replaced by six school-age health | :05:08. | :05:09.
Schools will have to pay for them out of existing budgets. | :05:10. | :05:14.
What we are being asked to do is buy back the school nurse service, | :05:15. | :05:24.
but the implication of that is, a service that was previously paid | :05:25. | :05:29.
for through funding to health, will be shifting to being paid | :05:30. | :05:32.
Is there a money for heads to say, we can pay for that? | :05:33. | :05:40.
There has been a 13% fall in November of school nurses | :05:41. | :05:47.
since 2010, leaving 2,606 NHS nurses across the country, | :05:48. | :05:49.
You know, children are mini versions of us. | :05:50. | :05:57.
They have mental health problems, stress, emotional concerns, | :05:58. | :06:04.
they are victims of bullying, and all of those things that | :06:05. | :06:08.
they need support from a health practitioner to deal with. | :06:09. | :06:14.
But the County Council says scrapping its school nurses | :06:15. | :06:16.
will actually result in a better service for the county's children. | :06:17. | :06:19.
We are trying to integrate the whole service and make sure | :06:20. | :06:22.
that more people are, I say, responsible for the health | :06:23. | :06:28.
of our young people, rather than its just being, | :06:29. | :06:30.
"Oh, well, we will wait until the school nurse comes | :06:31. | :06:32.
I don't like to really imagine children going out | :06:33. | :06:41.
without the health care support that they need, or children | :06:42. | :06:44.
having their education impaired by loss of services, | :06:45. | :06:48.
but it is quite clear that with fewer teachers, | :06:49. | :06:50.
fewer school nurses, we are sailing into | :06:51. | :06:53.
Cumbria's school nurses will be replaced from April. | :06:54. | :07:08.
Unemployment in the North East has jumped by 11,000, | :07:09. | :07:10.
In Cumbria 4,650 people claimed job seekers' | :07:11. | :07:16.
allowance in January, a rise of about 200 | :07:17. | :07:20.
And in North Yorkshire the total stands at 4,540, | :07:21. | :07:25.
The Teesside pawnbroker Ramsdens made its stock market debut today. | :07:26. | :07:34.
The Middlesbrough-based business is probably best known | :07:35. | :07:36.
for sponsoring the shirts of the town's football club. | :07:37. | :07:40.
The company is now worth more than ?25 million. | :07:41. | :07:42.
Here's our Business Correspondent, Ian Reeve. | :07:43. | :07:44.
Mandy has worked for this Teesside pawnbroking business, Ramsdens, | :07:45. | :07:49.
It's changed immensely, gone upmarket and does far | :07:50. | :07:57.
When I started, over 20 years ago, we had two branches. | :07:58. | :08:01.
We offered three products, pawnbroking was the key factor. | :08:02. | :08:07.
Then we used to do cheque-cashing and a few sales and now you can | :08:08. | :08:13.
see that we do over ten products and services. | :08:14. | :08:17.
Three quarters of Ramsden's business is now in foreign exchange. | :08:18. | :08:24.
It changed over ?300 million last year. | :08:25. | :08:26.
And figures like that, and future growth, have brought it | :08:27. | :08:30.
a stock market flotation today, trading its shares at 86p each. | :08:31. | :08:32.
But is there still something of a stigma over the industry. | :08:33. | :08:35.
People who don't understand it, yes, there is. | :08:36. | :08:38.
People who use it, no, because it's absolutely transparent. | :08:39. | :08:46.
It's a loan against an asset, so the person has got | :08:47. | :08:49.
They're raising the cash against that asset, then they repay | :08:50. | :08:54.
the loan and get that asset back, and that happens 80% of the time. | :08:55. | :08:57.
Of course on Teesside, the Middlesbrough-based business | :08:58. | :08:59.
It's the football club's shirt sponsor, something that's | :09:00. | :09:04.
sent its logo around the world, brought it welcome exposure. | :09:05. | :09:06.
And now Ramsden's is also Middlesbrough's only | :09:07. | :09:11.
A goal achieved after 30 years in business. | :09:12. | :09:22.
I enjoyed a sunny walk this morning and it did feel like Spring. | :09:23. | :09:29.
It will stay mild over the next few days but that is only part of the | :09:30. | :09:40.
story. There is rain around as well. Outbreaks of rain at the minute and | :09:41. | :09:43.
then they will tend to die away as they move to the east through the | :09:44. | :09:46.
night and in most places dry through the later part of the night. The | :09:47. | :09:51.
south-westerly breeze will prevent temperatures from dropping any lower | :09:52. | :09:58.
than five or six. Tomorrow it is a day of broken cloud, some sunny | :09:59. | :10:01.
intervals. A few showers as we had through the morning. Eastern parts | :10:02. | :10:07.
will hang on to the best of the brightness in the afternoon before | :10:08. | :10:09.
more rain comes into Cumbria by the end of the day. Temperatures on | :10:10. | :10:17.
paper will be similar to today. The West or south-westerly wind will be | :10:18. | :10:20.
quite brisk and make it feel a bit cooler perhaps. As we head towards | :10:21. | :10:25.
the end of the weaker ridge of high pressure builds for Friday and keeps | :10:26. | :10:29.
things fairly quiet and then a low pressure system pushes the weather | :10:30. | :10:32.
front towards us as we head into the weekend. It will be quite breezy at | :10:33. | :10:39.
times through the weekend. Friday looks like a mostly dry day, broken | :10:40. | :10:44.
cloud and sunny intervals. Temperatures up to ten with very | :10:45. | :10:48.
light winds, so feeling a bit warmer. Saturday and Sunday are | :10:49. | :10:52.
breezy at times and the clouds thicken after rain, especially in | :10:53. | :10:57.
the west on Saturday. Most places dry on Sunday. That is the way it's | :10:58. | :10:58.
looking and I leave you with the the weekend. Wouldn't promise you | :10:59. | :11:02.
two dry days but you never know, here is Nick with the national | :11:03. | :11:04.
picture. Hello. We put that cold weekend well | :11:05. | :11:09.
behind us now. Temperatures edging upwards and our weather watchers are | :11:10. | :11:13.
seeing plenty of signs of spring. Spending more time looking down than | :11:14. | :11:16.
looking up at the skies, we see these early blooms. They are set to | :11:17. | :11:20.
continue as we are set to stay mild for several more days to come. | :11:21. | :11:24.
Average daytime temperature this time of year around eight, but | :11:25. | :11:27.
getting into double figures all the way through the weekend. The start | :11:28. | :11:33.
of next week into the mid-teens potentially, very mild indeed. It | :11:34. | :11:37.
was 14 in Lincolnshire today. A lot of heavy rain to end the day. That | :11:38. | :11:41.
clearing from Yorkshire to the North Sea. A few showers in the west and | :11:42. | :11:44.
the odd one may continue into the night. Many becoming dry, just this | :11:45. | :11:48.
rain | :11:49. | :11:49. |
