Four people were held hostage by a man with a firearm

at a bookmakers in Jarrow in South Tyneside this evening.

Northumbria Police marksmen spent three hours at the scene,

before bringing the siege to an abrupt end.

Aren't police were called here to Jarrow shortly after 5:45 this

evening after reports of a man with a firearm at the Coral bookmakers.

Relatives of Nicholas McCulloch, who was working in the shop, said they

believed there were a handful of customers and another member of

staff inside when Nicholas and two others were released shortly

afterwards, around 8:45, another hostage was released, believed to be

an elderly male customer and five minutes later the siege came to a

dramatic conclusion. We were just having our tea and I

saw my cousin when I came out, she was distraught. Her summers in the

bookies and being held hostage. We just saw crowds, then the police,

then we just saw Nick come out an hour later. His mother was

absolutely traumatised when she found out and that is when she rang

me and I got cut off, then I came straight down. Goodness me! . Thank

god he is all right, he is out. Quite a shock for everyone.

Absolutely, when you hear about your family being at gunpoint. When you

notice your family, it is absolutely frightening. Paramedics have been in

attendance. There has been an ambulance on the scene. Police have

been here for a number of hours happily expect them to be here for a

while longer. We have not as yet had while longer. We have not as yet had

any details but we expect to hear more tomorrow.
