for the first time spotter planes find debris. That's all from the BBC | :00:00. | 3:59:59
Hello and welcome to Friday's Look News at Six | :00:00. | :00:08.
Hello and welcome to Friday's Look North On the programme tonight ` The | :00:09. | :00:12.
Sikh parents speaking out against the stigma of down's syndrome in | :00:13. | :00:19.
ethnic minorities. People think it is a disease and they gave us advice | :00:20. | :00:26.
to cure it. It is not a disease. We hear how families have been left | :00:27. | :00:30.
feeling isolated. Also tonight... The hundreds of | :00:31. | :00:33.
eviction notices served across Yorkshire as a result of the "spare | :00:34. | :00:40.
room subsidy". And the Bradford Alhambra celebrates 100 years by | :00:41. | :00:43.
staging its most ambitious performance yet. | :00:44. | :00:54.
And in sport the latest on Leeds United struggling to pay players' | :00:55. | :00:57.
wages, and I'm with Chesterfield fans ahead of their Wembley cup | :00:58. | :01:04.
final. The clocks go forward this weekend and I have quite promising | :01:05. | :01:08.
forecast to give you this evening. Join me for the details. | :01:09. | :01:16.
But first tonight a couple from Leeds has spoken out about the | :01:17. | :01:20.
stigma and isolation that's often felt by Asian families who have | :01:21. | :01:37.
children with learning disabilities. Sarbjit Core and Jatinder | :01:38. | :01:39.
Singh`Mehmi say they've come up against a lot of ignorance, | :01:40. | :01:42.
including the belief that they've been cursed, simply because their | :01:43. | :01:45.
son Gian has Down's Syndrome. Anna Crossley's been to meet the family. | :01:46. | :01:50.
This three`year`old is a familiar face here, his parents have been | :01:51. | :01:56.
bringing him to worship since he was a baby. Although they say they have | :01:57. | :02:02.
always been made to feel welcome, people's reactions from elsewhere in | :02:03. | :02:06.
the Seek community has not always been positive, just because Gian has | :02:07. | :02:19.
down syndrome. People think it is a disease and they gave us advice on | :02:20. | :02:24.
how to cure it. It is not a disease, it doesn't define his whole | :02:25. | :02:29.
personality. The couple say there is stigma within other religions as | :02:30. | :02:34.
well, but the pair sometimes are made to feel they have been polished | :02:35. | :02:45.
with a child who has this. It is nothing I have eaten, the way I used | :02:46. | :02:51.
to sit, what I used to watch. There is no blame, no curse, we see Gian | :02:52. | :02:59.
as a gift. This couple clearly received a lot of support from their | :03:00. | :03:02.
own temple, but they also want to let other parents know there is more | :03:03. | :03:07.
help available in the wider community and cultural differences | :03:08. | :03:11.
will be treated sensitively. The family is involved with a charity | :03:12. | :03:17.
that supports children with down syndrome and their parents, Sunshine | :03:18. | :03:26.
And Smiles. They welcome everyone, irrespective of ethnicity and | :03:27. | :03:30.
religious beliefs. We realise some people don't want to come to a group | :03:31. | :03:34.
and it might not be the right time for them to come to a group | :03:35. | :03:38.
situation, so we also say we are very happy to meet people at home | :03:39. | :03:43.
and talk about support they would find helpful. It is a culturally | :03:44. | :03:53.
sensitive issue, but this couple feel it is important to reassure the | :03:54. | :03:57.
parents that there is support out there, and having a child with a | :03:58. | :04:02.
learning disability is not a curse or a punishment. | :04:03. | :04:10.
A BBC investigation has revealed that rent arrears increased and | :04:11. | :04:13.
hundreds of eviction notices have been served across Yorkshire as a | :04:14. | :04:16.
direct result of the squeeze on housing benefits. In the last year | :04:17. | :04:19.
more than a thousand tenants of council or Housing Association homes | :04:20. | :04:32.
have moved. Out of more than 275,000 tenants across Yorkshire and the | :04:33. | :04:35.
Humber more than 36,000 have been affected by the changes. Of those, | :04:36. | :04:39.
more than ten thousand tenants that were up to date with payments are | :04:40. | :04:42.
now in arrears, that's about twenty nine per cent. More than eight | :04:43. | :04:45.
hundred people were served with eviction notices. While more than | :04:46. | :04:48.
one thousand one hundred people have moved house. Our Political Editor | :04:49. | :04:52.
Len Tingle has been looking at the figures. This is the spare room, the | :04:53. | :04:57.
room that costs ?14 per week. Elizabeth is in her early 60s and | :04:58. | :05:02.
has been unemployed for a couple of years. She lives alone on benefits | :05:03. | :05:07.
of around ?70 a week and for the last year has had to pay some of | :05:08. | :05:10.
that money to the council because she has a spare bedroom in her flat | :05:11. | :05:17.
in Leeds. I have daughters and grandchildren, friends, and now | :05:18. | :05:22.
there is another year to look forward to. Elizabeth isn't alone, | :05:23. | :05:30.
in Leeds over 5000 tenants on benefits had to pay extra rent if | :05:31. | :05:34.
they had a spare bedroom, 1700 of them went into arrears with their | :05:35. | :05:39.
rent, but one key government objective was to encourage a switch | :05:40. | :05:44.
to smaller properties. Only 300 of them did, around 6%. The real issue | :05:45. | :05:50.
we found with the study that cuts across the north is that it is not | :05:51. | :05:55.
just the rent arrears, it is the greater debt people are getting into | :05:56. | :06:01.
which is related to this. The households we work with experienced | :06:02. | :06:07.
debt of around ?3500 per household. I don't want to leave my home. It is | :06:08. | :06:14.
a flat, a room at the top of the house. My grandchildren stay here | :06:15. | :06:22.
with me at weekends sometimes. Leeds has not issued any eviction notices | :06:23. | :06:27.
but across Yorkshire over 1000 have been served. In a statement the | :06:28. | :06:30.
government said that the BBC figures show the success of its policies. It | :06:31. | :06:35.
has reduced the housing benefit budget and at the same time it is on | :06:36. | :06:40.
track for its five`year plan of seeing 30% of those with the spare | :06:41. | :06:54.
bedroom move to a smaller house. And there will be more on that on | :06:55. | :06:58.
the Sunday Politics Show at 11.15 here on BBC One. Later on Look | :06:59. | :07:09.
North... The Sheffield couple making history by tying the knot at | :07:10. | :07:11.
midnight. As soon as gay marriage becomes | :07:12. | :07:15.
legal, Richie and Kyle are to say their vows. | :07:16. | :07:18.
The Attorney General has lost his appeal against what he described as | :07:19. | :07:21.
the "lenient" sentence given to a Sheffield ice`cream maker who kept | :07:22. | :07:31.
another man as a slave. Dominic Grieve was attempting to increase | :07:32. | :07:34.
the six and a half year jail term handed to David Rooke for false | :07:35. | :07:37.
imprisonment and assault. He was convicted in January this year of | :07:38. | :07:41.
keeping Craig Kinsella ` a man with learning difficulties ` in his | :07:42. | :07:44.
garage and forcing him to live like a modern`day slave. But the Court of | :07:45. | :07:48.
Appeal ruled the sentence wasn't too low. This was a difficult sentencing | :07:49. | :07:55.
exercise, even for this experienced judge. We refuse to leave and the | :07:56. | :08:07.
matter is concluded. 22 people have now been identified as suspects at | :08:08. | :08:10.
the centre of the two ongoing inquiries into the Hillsborough | :08:11. | :08:12.
disaster in 1989. 96 Liverpool football fans died at the Sheffield | :08:13. | :08:15.
Wednesday ground. A mix of serving and retired police officers as well | :08:16. | :08:19.
as others working for other organisations at the time are being | :08:20. | :08:21.
interviewed. Alleged offences include manslaughter, misconduct in | :08:22. | :08:24.
a public office, and perverting the course of justice. | :08:25. | :08:26.
A petition's been launched calling for more information about the mass | :08:27. | :08:29.
resignation of a North Yorkshire school's governing body. In February | :08:30. | :08:32.
all the governors at Richmond School stood down, but the reasons why were | :08:33. | :08:38.
unclear. The people behind this new petition say there's been a cover up | :08:39. | :08:42.
and the community has a right to know what's happened. In a previous | :08:43. | :08:47.
statement, North Yorkshire County Council said the governors left | :08:48. | :08:50.
because of a serious breakdown in trust and their relationship with | :08:51. | :08:52.
the school's leadership team. A pensioner from the Peak District, | :08:53. | :08:56.
who became the most watched person in the world in the early days of | :08:57. | :09:00.
YouTube, has died aged 86. Peter Oakley became an unlikely internet | :09:01. | :09:02.
sensation when he started posting his own videos online. His first | :09:03. | :09:09.
contribution received three million hits. | :09:10. | :09:13.
As midnight strikes tonight, history will be made in Sheffield and in | :09:14. | :09:17.
other towns and cities across the country as gay marriage becomes | :09:18. | :09:26.
legal. South Yorkshire couple Richie Wood and Kyle Emerson will be among | :09:27. | :09:30.
the first to tie the knot. They're getting married at Sheffield Town | :09:31. | :09:33.
Hall in a special ceremony just after midnight. Kate Bradbrook has | :09:34. | :09:38.
been to meet them on their big day. The town Hall is one of Sheffield's | :09:39. | :09:42.
most historic buildings and tonight history will be made here. Richie | :09:43. | :09:50.
Wood and Kyle Emerson, becoming one of the first same`sex couples in the | :09:51. | :09:58.
country, tying the knot at midnight and now there is only hours to go. | :09:59. | :10:04.
Kyle and Ritchie met at midnight seven years ago and will be the | :10:05. | :10:07.
first couple in Sheffield to take advantage of the change in the law. | :10:08. | :10:13.
Our relationship is no different to anyone else's, and as much as it is | :10:14. | :10:24.
about gaining equality for us, it is about the marriage we are going | :10:25. | :10:29.
into. The civil partnership automatically gives you the barrier, | :10:30. | :10:32.
and we are excited to have the opportunity and the chance to get | :10:33. | :10:37.
married. We have a lot of friends from up and down the UK, and some | :10:38. | :10:43.
coming from Europe as well. We are excited and we are going to proceed | :10:44. | :10:48.
with the ceremony as of the first chime of midnight so it will have | :10:49. | :10:52.
that magical fairy tale theme to the wedding which is exactly what we | :10:53. | :10:57.
wanted. It may not have been a whirlwind romance but the wedding | :10:58. | :11:01.
has been planned in just 26 days, and with a little help from local | :11:02. | :11:07.
businesses and loved ones, their dream Day is now a reality. Everyone | :11:08. | :11:12.
has pulled together, and it is not over yet. We have tonight to come, | :11:13. | :11:18.
so until it has happened I don't think anyone will relax. Because the | :11:19. | :11:25.
ceremony is happening so late, the whole day has been turned on its | :11:26. | :11:29.
head. After midnight, people will come through to the ceremony room | :11:30. | :11:36.
where the couple will tie the knot. Same`sex marriage may seem | :11:37. | :11:38.
unconventional at the moment but it will soon become the norm. | :11:39. | :11:45.
Thanks for staying with us. Before seven o'clock: Fighting a financial | :11:46. | :12:01.
handicap. And the Bradford Alhambra marks its centenary with the Lion | :12:02. | :12:08.
King, its biggest show yet. Now onto sport and it's a big | :12:09. | :12:11.
weekend for Chesterfield fans who are getting ready to go to Wembley | :12:12. | :12:20.
for their cup final on Sunday. Yes, they play Peterborough for the | :12:21. | :12:23.
Johnstone Paints Trophy and Shamir Masri is in Chesterfield for us now. | :12:24. | :12:30.
Good evening. Good evening, I am here at the home of justice `` | :12:31. | :12:40.
Chesterfield FC. The team themselves headed down sale this morning so | :12:41. | :12:44.
they are already preparing for the big match, but my colleague caught | :12:45. | :12:48.
up with them before they left to give them a big sendoff. There are | :12:49. | :12:53.
some exciting events to look forward to round here, and the Chesterfield | :12:54. | :12:59.
ladies love no one more than big Tom, that's Tommy Lee of course, the | :13:00. | :13:04.
Chesterfield goalkeeper and his mates who after their final training | :13:05. | :13:08.
session this morning said their goodbyes to fans who will soon be | :13:09. | :13:15.
following them to Wembley. For the larger than usual media presence, | :13:16. | :13:20.
there were some big messages to digest. They will be hoping to avoid | :13:21. | :13:25.
Wembley and the play`offs in their quest to be automatically promoted | :13:26. | :13:29.
instead. The priority since the start of the season has been | :13:30. | :13:35.
promotion. We need to be in the top three come May and that is where our | :13:36. | :13:43.
focus will be. We are in a good position, but we have some massive | :13:44. | :13:47.
games to come on Sunday and afterwards. As the games become | :13:48. | :13:51.
less, the intensity and the pressure builds up but it shouldn't really | :13:52. | :13:57.
because it should be something you can look forward to. Are likely | :13:58. | :14:01.
40,000 plus attendance at Wembley should provide a useful split of | :14:02. | :14:05.
gate proceeds, but Chesterfield have been quick to change the subject. | :14:06. | :14:12.
Pride for the supporters, for the day itself, that is what the game on | :14:13. | :14:18.
Sunday is all about. It is not about finance. The point is that if the | :14:19. | :14:22.
manager and the players get their way between now and many, this will | :14:23. | :14:28.
be Chesterfield's only trip to Wembley this season, so enjoy it, | :14:29. | :14:32.
and there is still time to work, flag`waving technique. I am here at | :14:33. | :14:48.
the community hub at the stadium, and with the man behind it. It is a | :14:49. | :14:57.
fantastic stadium. Yes, it is great, a number of community | :14:58. | :15:02.
tenants, a great addition for the club and it shows what a great | :15:03. | :15:08.
community focused this club has. Absolutely, the kids are enjoying | :15:09. | :15:12.
themselves. Fantastic facility. Let's speak to a couple of fans, | :15:13. | :15:19.
Ian, how much are you looking forward to this final? Really | :15:20. | :15:24.
excited and it is on my bucket list so it has been fulfilled. I was away | :15:25. | :15:31.
last time in Malta so I am making up for it. You have been supporting the | :15:32. | :15:37.
club for quite some time, you were there two years ago and it was a | :15:38. | :15:43.
bittersweet season. Yes, we won the trophy but we got relegated from the | :15:44. | :15:48.
league. This time we are going to do the double. You had a bit of a | :15:49. | :15:54.
stutter but you are looking to rectify that now. Yes, we can still | :15:55. | :16:01.
get promotion and the title. Fantastic. The game is this Sunday, | :16:02. | :16:06.
they play Peterborough and we will keep you updated on our Sunday | :16:07. | :16:19.
bulletins. Good luck! It is another day, another Leeds | :16:20. | :16:29.
United story. The players have agreed to defer part of their wages | :16:30. | :16:32.
for March according to Professional Footballers' Association chief | :16:33. | :16:34.
executive, Gordon Taylor. The players were due to receive their | :16:35. | :16:37.
wages today, but only the general members of staff were paid. | :16:38. | :16:40.
Businesman Massimo Cellino has paid the last two wage bills, but on | :16:41. | :16:44.
Monday, the Football League blocked his takeover of the club, although | :16:45. | :16:47.
the Italian has since lodged an appeal against the decision. There | :16:48. | :16:53.
is an approximate amount that has been acceptable to the players. They | :16:54. | :16:57.
are aware of the situation. There has been a meeting today with the | :16:58. | :17:03.
players and things are looking to be sorted next week one way or the | :17:04. | :17:07.
other. Castleford have gone back to the top | :17:08. | :17:10.
of Super League after demolishing London Broncos. The Tigers won 54`6 | :17:11. | :17:14.
at the Hive in Barnet. There were two tries apiece for Justin Carney | :17:15. | :17:17.
and Michael Shenton. Carney is the League's top try scorer with seven | :17:18. | :17:23.
this season. As for Shenton, his coach Daryl Powell says he's playing | :17:24. | :17:26.
as well as at anytime during his career. | :17:27. | :17:33.
That is a cracking story, at the top of the super league. Well there's | :17:34. | :17:39.
also an important sporting weekend ahead in Doncaster where a crowd of | :17:40. | :17:43.
around 15,000 is expected to welcome in the new flat racing season. It's | :17:44. | :17:47.
not just a big weekend for the venue, but also for the local racing | :17:48. | :17:50.
industry, as Ian Bucknell reports. At 26, Scott Dixon is one of the | :17:51. | :17:54.
youngest racehorse trainers in the business, he is based near the | :17:55. | :18:09.
village of barbed `` Babworth and this is an exciting time. We always | :18:10. | :18:15.
try to set our stall out to have a few winners round Doncaster. Horse | :18:16. | :18:23.
racing is big business here, and Scott has eight stable staff. He | :18:24. | :18:27.
says that for a small training operation like this it can be a | :18:28. | :18:33.
struggle to survive. It is having a bit of luck to get a good horse, | :18:34. | :18:37.
that is the dream, that's why most people get into it. The dream of | :18:38. | :18:44.
having a top`class horse that will take them around the country and | :18:45. | :18:46.
hopefully around the world. Doncaster racehorse helps to support | :18:47. | :18:50.
the nearby racing industry by encouraging its members to invest in | :18:51. | :18:59.
horses trained by Scott and other local yards. They are an integral | :19:00. | :19:03.
part of our business, without them we wouldn't have an event put on. | :19:04. | :19:10.
For Scott, a win on Saturday could change his fortunes forever, | :19:11. | :19:14.
attracting new owners and more horses. As with so much in racing, a | :19:15. | :19:25.
lot is at stake. Sheffield is known as the steel city | :19:26. | :19:29.
for a good reason and its metal used to be found on golf courses | :19:30. | :19:32.
everywhere before lighter and more durable materials came into use. A | :19:33. | :19:35.
Rotherham company is aiming to put Sheffield steel clubs back on the | :19:36. | :19:38.
fairway. Their only handicap is their prototype has been deemed too | :19:39. | :19:41.
risky for conventional financial backing. Our business correspondent | :19:42. | :19:43.
Danni Hewson has this exclusive report. Precision comes as standard | :19:44. | :19:51.
at Newburgh engineering from aerospace to military projects, the | :19:52. | :19:55.
core business is booming, but despite their proven track record in | :19:56. | :19:59.
new scheme to make golf clubs has struggled to get off the ground. A | :20:00. | :20:04.
hangover from the credit crunch, finding finance is stopping | :20:05. | :20:10.
innovation at the first tee. Most don't understand it so they tend to | :20:11. | :20:15.
move away from things they don't understand and if they can't see an | :20:16. | :20:18.
immediate return. It has been difficult to raise money and we have | :20:19. | :20:23.
tried to get funding from various routes and failed. We are going to | :20:24. | :20:32.
Kick starter, and anyone can take part in the project. From Monday, | :20:33. | :20:37.
anyone can pledge money to the project but only those offering | :20:38. | :20:48.
?1000 will get one of the putters. I'm not a golfer but I'm told this | :20:49. | :20:54.
could bring about a new era, repatriating golf club production to | :20:55. | :20:59.
South Yorkshire with that all`important stamp of made in | :21:00. | :21:02.
Sheffield. The project is already attracting support from some high | :21:03. | :21:05.
profile figures, even if this sportsman is better known for his | :21:06. | :21:12.
football skills. I think it is brilliant for Sheffield, Yorkshire, | :21:13. | :21:17.
for Britain. A lot of our manufacturing has gone to China and | :21:18. | :21:20.
they are putting the prices up. They don't really care about the | :21:21. | :21:24.
workmanship, they just want to get paid and I think there is a bit of | :21:25. | :21:32.
pride that it will be in Sheffield. So why now after so many years is | :21:33. | :21:38.
steel making it back on the fairway? We can do it because we have the | :21:39. | :21:44.
technology, the materials and the reputation. Big dreams, now they | :21:45. | :21:57.
just need the cash. Here we go, | :21:58. | :22:07.
it is embarrassing! I have only ever done crazy golf in Ambleside, once! | :22:08. | :22:25.
Give it some welly. You can win this. Absolutely hopeless. Is that | :22:26. | :22:40.
your teacup? It is mouldy in the bottom. There we are. We wish them | :22:41. | :22:44.
all the best with the project anyway. | :22:45. | :22:48.
Bradford's Alhambra theatre turns 100 this year. To celebrate, it's | :22:49. | :22:55.
staging the largest show in its history. Disney's The Lion King will | :22:56. | :23:00.
play for seven weeks at the theatre as part of its UK tour and Look | :23:01. | :23:04.
North's had exclusive access backstage. Here's David Tracz. The | :23:05. | :23:17.
music in the show is familiar to a generation. The productions and | :23:18. | :23:23.
adaptation of the 1994 Disney film. Since it premiered on Broadway, this | :23:24. | :23:28.
production has toured the world. It is the story of Simba and the | :23:29. | :23:36.
journey he goes through in his life to become a king. This is one of the | :23:37. | :23:42.
show's principal characters. It is a fairy tale, she is the one calling | :23:43. | :23:49.
the animals to praise the birth of the King. Some roles in the | :23:50. | :23:56.
production are also played by puppets. You can get quite a lot of | :23:57. | :24:04.
character out of this puppet. He has a trigger for his beak, and a cradle | :24:05. | :24:14.
here that works his eyes. The guys that come in here have about five or | :24:15. | :24:22.
six weeks to learn the puppetry. 21 trucks are used to transport this | :24:23. | :24:25.
production across the country and it is the biggest show the Alhambra has | :24:26. | :24:30.
had in its history. It means a lot for the cast to be here. We are | :24:31. | :24:35.
really proud to be here in Yorkshire, also in this Alhambra | :24:36. | :24:40.
Theatre. The show runs in the Alhambra until May. | :24:41. | :24:50.
That looks something else! I'm sure it will be fantastically successful. | :24:51. | :25:00.
Looking forward to that. You were terrible! What about all those hours | :25:01. | :25:06.
you spend on the fairway? What do you mean all those hours! This is a | :25:07. | :25:13.
picture of cherry blossom, it has obviously been a grey day. The | :25:14. | :25:17.
bluebells out there, thank you for that. This was the 29th of March | :25:18. | :25:25.
last year, and of course it was one of the coldest and snowiest Marches | :25:26. | :25:40.
on record. British summer Time starts on Sunday, both Saturday | :25:41. | :25:43.
afternoon and Sunday afternoon looked promising with sunshine, | :25:44. | :25:48.
although both mornings could get off to a great start. We are pulling up | :25:49. | :25:54.
dry air from the near continent, and temperatures could reach 17 | :25:55. | :26:00.
degrees. There is a lot of cloud, still giving some patchy rain and | :26:01. | :26:06.
drizzle in places. It stays cloudy overnight, some mistiness and hill | :26:07. | :26:11.
fog and further patchy rain in places with most temperatures around | :26:12. | :26:20.
six Celsius. The sun will rise in the morning at 5:48am, your next | :26:21. | :26:23.
high water time: A very slow start to the weekend, | :26:24. | :26:38.
some hill fog. It is a slow process but gradually the cloud will break | :26:39. | :26:42.
up, south Yorkshire will be sunny by the end of the morning. Elsewhere it | :26:43. | :26:48.
might take until the afternoon but it will be fine and sunny, and | :26:49. | :26:53.
inland it will become warm as well. Not one along the coast with a fresh | :26:54. | :26:58.
easterly wind, just nine degrees in Scarborough. The best of the | :26:59. | :27:03.
conditions will be further west. You can see 16 in Leeds and Sheffield. A | :27:04. | :27:08.
repeat performance on Sunday, perhaps less in the way of low | :27:09. | :27:15.
cloud, then it brightens up readily. The first day of British | :27:16. | :27:22.
summertime looks beautiful, 16 or 17 Celsius. On Monday, more in the way | :27:23. | :27:27.
of cloud and the risk of some scattered showers. That is the | :27:28. | :27:33.
forecast. I am looking forward to Stuart Lancaster tonight, having a | :27:34. | :27:43.
chat with him. The weekend is set up nicely. Of all good weekend, | :27:44. | :27:46.
goodbye. chat with him. The weekend is set up | :27:47. | :27:46.
nicely. Of all good weekend, goodbye. | :27:47. | :27:49. |
