Good evening. A protest has taken place against plans to close more | :00:10. | :00:14.
than half of Rotherham's children's centres. Thousands of families would | :00:15. | :00:17.
be affected if the closures go ahead, and unions say over 100 jobs | :00:18. | :00:21.
would be lost. Here's Dave Edwards. Kids not cuts! Kids not cuts! | :00:22. | :00:26.
Campaigners and their children certainly made themselves heard in | :00:27. | :00:30.
Rotherham this lunchtime. About a hundred of them marched from the | :00:31. | :00:33.
Town Hall down into the town centre calling for the council to change | :00:34. | :00:38.
their mind. We're here to send a message to the council that they | :00:39. | :00:41.
need to think again. Rotherham can't afford these cuts, they'll hurt our | :00:42. | :00:44.
communities and devastate the lives of children and families across | :00:45. | :00:48.
Rotherham. About 9,000 children under five and | :00:49. | :00:51.
their families use the 22 children's centres, but the council wants to | :00:52. | :00:55.
close 13 of them as it looks to cut ?2.2 million from its budget for | :00:56. | :00:59.
early years and childcare services. Parents and staff are angry. | :01:00. | :01:06.
My little boy attends a children's centre, and my husband was out of | :01:07. | :01:10.
work at the end of last year. And without the children's centres | :01:11. | :01:13.
providing the support, I wouldn't be where I am today. We both work full | :01:14. | :01:17.
time now, and without the children's centre being there for us, we | :01:18. | :01:21.
wouldn't be able to work. There's more and more children, families | :01:22. | :01:24.
that are moving into the Rotherham area, so why these services being | :01:25. | :01:27.
cut? I just don't get it. Targeted at a vulnerable groups, | :01:28. | :01:30.
it's things like early education, family support and parenting classes | :01:31. | :01:33.
that are provided at the centres, like this one in Kimberworth. This | :01:34. | :01:38.
is one of the 13 children's centres that are set to close. The council | :01:39. | :01:43.
admit the closures will affect the quality of children's services here | :01:44. | :01:47.
in Rotherham, but they say they have to save money. And here in a Labour | :01:48. | :01:53.
heartland, it's no surprise that central government gets the blame. | :01:54. | :01:56.
It's not the fault of the council, they've had their money removed for | :01:57. | :02:00.
these, so they've got to make choices, but what do we do? Do we | :02:01. | :02:04.
close Sure Starts or close an OAP home? | :02:05. | :02:06.
A public consultation is running until the end of April. About a | :02:07. | :02:09.
thousand people have already made their views known. | :02:10. | :02:11.
David Edwards, BBC Look North, Rotherham. | :02:12. | :02:17.
Now on to today's football results. In the Yorkshire derby, a great win | :02:18. | :02:24.
for Doncaster, who beat Leeds 2`1. It means Rovers edge closer to | :02:25. | :02:29.
safety. Huddersfield drew 1`1 with Reading. Sheffield Wednesday lost at | :02:30. | :02:32.
home 4`1 against Watford. And a vital result for Barnsley, their 4`1 | :02:33. | :02:36.
win at Yeovil gives them hope of avoiding the drop. | :02:37. | :02:39.
In League One, a good away win for Bradford, they beat Leyton Orient | :02:40. | :02:42.
1`0. Rotherham extended their unbeaten run to 15 games with a 2`1 | :02:43. | :02:46.
win against Bristol City. And Sheffield United lost 2`1 after | :02:47. | :02:52.
conceding a late goal at Swindon. In League Two, it finished York | :02:53. | :02:58.
zero, Burton zero. And in the Conference, Halifax beat Luton 2`0. | :02:59. | :03:03.
And you can see all the action from today's matches on BBC One tonight. | :03:04. | :03:07.
The Football League Show is on right after Match Of The Day at 11:55. | :03:08. | :03:10.
Now, Chesterfield Football Club and their fans will already be gearing | :03:11. | :03:14.
up for their big day at Wembley tomorrow. The Spirites won the | :03:15. | :03:17.
competition two years ago when they beat Swindon Town. Yesterday, the | :03:18. | :03:20.
team set off for tomorrow's Johnstone's Paint Trophy final. They | :03:21. | :03:25.
take on Peterborough, who are in League One, where the Spirites hope | :03:26. | :03:30.
to be next season. We can now go to Wembley knowing we're in a strong | :03:31. | :03:33.
league position, enjoy Wembley, and then come and get promoted if we | :03:34. | :03:37.
can. They are the things that that my job as a manager, as the weeks | :03:38. | :03:41.
run out, is to try and deliver. Come the end of the season, if we can | :03:42. | :03:45.
deliver both, fantastic. If we can deliver one, then we'd be happy. | :03:46. | :03:48.
In squash, world champion Nick Matthew beat fellow Yorkshireman | :03:49. | :03:51.
James Wilstrop to win the Canary Wharf Classic in London. Matthew, | :03:52. | :03:53.
from Sheffield, seen here in the black shorts, beat his Pontefract | :03:54. | :03:56.
rival in three straight games, dominating the final. The game | :03:57. | :04:00.
lasted just 51 minutes, the shortest final on record. It's Nick Matthew's | :04:01. | :04:05.
fourth title. And finally, congratulations to | :04:06. | :04:09.
Dickie Bird. The former umpire was this morning voted in as the new | :04:10. | :04:12.
president of Yorkshire County Cricket Club. Dickie, who is now 80 | :04:13. | :04:16.
years old, had played for Yorkshire as a player before he became an | :04:17. | :04:18.
umpire. Now the weather. Hello again, good evening. The | :04:19. | :04:27.
clocks spring forward an hour tonight, and there is a definite | :04:28. | :04:31.
feeling of spring in the air. As we go through this evening, we'll have | :04:32. | :04:34.
some sunshine to end the day, and then cloud building in places as we | :04:35. | :04:38.
go through the night. We will see some patches of mist and fog | :04:39. | :04:42.
developing. It isn't going to be a cold night, temperatures only | :04:43. | :04:44.
dropping back to six or seven degrees Celsius. That mist and fog | :04:45. | :04:47.
lifts tomorrow, we will start to lose the cloud, a day of hazy | :04:48. | :04:51.
sunshine, temperatures up to a height of 16 or 17 degrees, and it | :04:52. | :04:56.
turns more unsettled next week. That is at from this added 18, we | :04:57. | :05:01.
are back tomorrow at 6:50. For now, bye`bye. `` the Saturday team. | :05:02. | :05:13.
Good evening. We achieved 20 degrees in the sunshine today but, in | :05:14. | :05:20.
contrast, under the cloud in Northern Ireland, just nine. With | :05:21. | :05:25.
the cloud, just seven in the North East. We take the contrast into | :05:26. | :05:33.
tomorrow. At least the cloud here, creeping back inland, will prevent | :05:34. | :05:36.
textures falling too low, down to six overnight. -- temperatures. Less | :05:37. | :05:45.
fog in the south and east. But it will be an issue further north. | :05:46. | :05:54.
Again, a lovely start to the day before taking a while to left, the | :05:55. | :06:05.
cloud lingering. It will be pretty cloudy and great but hopefully we | :06:06. | :06:09.
will see fewer showers in Northern Ireland than | :06:10. | :06:10. |
