Good evening from Look North. The controversial Italian busindssman

Massimo Cellino is the new owner of Leeds United tonight. Mr Cellino has

bought a controlling stake hn the club after winning a legal battle

with the Football League. It had earlier ruled he did not medt the

standards for directors. Jod Inwood reports.

A day of mixed fortunes for Leeds United as the team suffered a narrow

defeat at Wigan. Massimo Cellino, the Italian Bensons when ``

businessmen trying to take over the club was told it could go ahead And

according to experts not a loment too soon. The club could have gone

into administration, the consequences of that could have been

unthinkable. There could have been a substantial number of points

audited, the possibility of relegation, players not being paid.

If the club had gone into administration, players could have

left the club. It allows, cdrtainly, Mr Cellino to set out what his

vision is. Mr Cellino, routhnely described as a colourful ch`racter,

had been told by the fit all week he was unfit to own a club. But today

an independent QC overturned that decision, paving the way for the

takeover and for him to become president. Statements followed. The

league said: The man himself is said to be very relieved, with bhg plans

for the club and its long`stffering fans. The attitude of the stpporters

is that this club needs a m`n who can take them by the scruff of the

neck and spend a bit of mondy and help them go forward. We ard all

hoping that the two of us got together. And that the club has

better times. On a grey day here, an injection of Italian colour? And

more importantly cash. It is impossible to say what the new

Cellino era will bring, but it is unlikely to be dull.

In other news, a 23`year`old man has been charged with the murder of a

pensioner in South Yorkshird. The body of 75`year`old Doreen Walker

was found at a house in Cudworth on Wednesday. A postmortem revdaled she

died from multiple injuries. Liam Naylor, from Junction Street in

Barnsley, was remanded in ctstody by the town's magistrates todax. A

17`year`old girl has been b`iled pending further police enquhries.

Hundreds of people gathered on the Headrow in Leeds demonstrathng

against the so called 'bedroom tax'. The government's spare room subsidy

came into force a year ago today. People who are thought to h`ve a

room in their council house that they don't use lose some hotsing

benefit. The government says the reforms are necessary to restore

fairness to the system and lake better use of social housing. But

the union Unite say the changes have caused misery for hundreds of

thousands of people. What it is doing is forcing people into the

private rented sector, which costs more in housing benefit sochal

housing. And creating the social problems that an unsteady tdndency

creates. A senior councillor responshble for

traffic issues in York has said he will resign if fines given to

motorists using Lendal Bridge are proved to have been unlawful.

Labour's Dave Merrett said he thought the council, which has

issued fines worth ?1.3 million was operating legally. Earlier this week

a traffic adjudicator said the roads did not qualify as bus lanes and

signage was inadequate. But the council said it had taken ldgal

advice and the ban would continue. Let's get into the food all results.

In the Championship Barnslex drew 0`0 with Brighton. Doncaster were

1`0 up at half`time but enddd up losing 3`1 to Birmingham. And

Huddersfield went down to a last`minute goal at home to Bolton.

In League One, Bradford lost 3` at home to Oldham. Rotherham scored

their fourth straight Leagud win, 4`3 at Gillingham. And it fhnished

1`1 between Sheffield United and Leyton Orient.

In League Two, a late equalhser denied Chesterfield a home win

against Newport. And York hdld the leaders Rochdale to a 0`0 draw.

And in the Conference, Halifax made it six wins out of seven by beating

play`off rivals Nuneaton 1`0. Don't forget, you can see all of the
