Good evening from Look North. First tonight, as you may have seen

on the national news, there have been chaotic scenes today at

Sheffield's half`marathon. Organisers tried to call the event

off due to a lack of drinking water for competitors along the route. But

many of the 4,100 runners ignored their announcements and completed

the 13`mile course around the city centre anyway. Danny Carpenter

reports. Booth is the moment race officials

decided the event could not go ahead. And this is how news was

broken to the runners. The race today is cancelled. The unexpected

reaction was this. Deliberate defiance by those on the front. For

everybody else, it was confusion. People were saying, it's been

cancelled. But we were running it. Some of the people nearer the back

didn't know it had been cancelled. They just followed everybody else.

We thought it was a mess, there was no information about why it was

delayed. And then everybody went. For reasons which are unknown, the

water suppliers did not show up. For safety reasons, it was decided to

pull the plug. But the spirit of the city succeeded where the suppliers

failed. Shops were handing out water in cups. It was fantastic. Even as

the runners were returning, apologetic race organisers promised

they would get it right next time. It was very unfortunate. We will

have a good look at it and find out what went wrong. Obviously, we

cannot do that this afternoon. We will learn. So the race that was not

a race was run after all. And maybe it is the one that people will

remember the most, even if it is not for the right reasons.

In other news, a controversial Yorkshire`based MEP, who was elected

as a member of the British National Party, has announced he's stepping

down at next month's European elections. Five years ago, Andrew

Brons became the first BNP politician to represent the region

in Europe. He later left the party after falling out with its leader

Nick Griffin, and formed a new political group called the British

Democratic Party. If you look at the attendance figures, my attendance is

one of the highest, and the number of speeches, I think I'm about 11

out of the 73 UK MEPs. You only need to see the people he surrounds

himself with. They are the politics of hate and division.

North Yorkshire Police today launched a new campaign aimed at

cutting biker deaths on the county's roads. A road show in the centre of

Helmsley highlighted the dangers posed to those speeding on two

wheels ` including talks from an officer who'd lost her father in a

crash. He was out riding with his friends. Please cite `` Drive safe.

I don't want anything else to go through what I went through.

Yorkshire roads are beautiful but there are a lot of hazards that

there aren't on tracks. In Rugby League, Huddersfield Giants

were just edged out by St Helens in the fourth round of the Challenge

Cup. The Giants established a 16`8 lead thanks to two tries from Shaun

Lunt and one from Joe Wardle. But Huddersfield was reduced to 12 men

when Brett Ferres was sent off for a dangerous tackle on Jonny Lomax, and

Saints squeezed home by 17 points to 16.

Well, the fifth round draw sees Super League leaders St Helens

travel to third`placed Leeds Rhinos. There's another all`Super League tie

between Bradford Bulls and Catalan Dragons. And Hunslet Hawks travel to

Wigan, who are two leagues above them.

Leeds's Jonny Brownlee finished second in the opening event of the

Triathlon World Series. He couldn't match world champion Havier Gomez in

the race in Auckland. Brownlee admits he lacked a bit of sharpness,

but he's aiming to be fully fit for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

this summer. He absolutely killed me. In the last half, just well done

to him. He's obviously in great shape.

And congratulations to Leeds powerlifter Ali Jawad, whom we

featured on Friday's Look North preparing for the international

Paralympic Committee's World Championships in Dubai. Ali didn't

just win the gold medal in this afternoon's competition ` he broke

the world record as well. Some further rain in the forecast to

start working week. That continues overnight. It will be fairly light

patchy, clear link `` clearing later. Temperatures overnight are

still miles, dropping to nine or 10 Celsius. That rain is with all of us

first thing on Monday. It will be heavy at times and persistent before

clearing in the afternoon. Temperatures up to around 13 or 14

degrees. Once that rain clears on Monday there are signs things will

turn a bit more settled. Tuesday looks to be decent. We will see some

Sunny spells with the wind turning a bit lighter. Still miles with highs

of 13 degrees. Good evening, after a fairly mild

weekend, a fresher week in store for the week ahead. Moreshine at times

but not a huge amount tomorrow because that's shaping up to be a

wet day for just about all of us. The rain developing through the

night and it is still wet at the moment in southern counties. Watch

how the rain becomes more extensive and heavier with a strengthening

breeze. For northern England and Northern Ireland, a colder feel to

the night. In northern Scotland, there will be temperatures in

sheltered spots. A mild start for Monday. If you escape through the

morning commute dry, you will one of the few. Heavy bursts around. So

expect surface water and spray on faster routes if you are travelling

in by car. The winds are a feature in the south. After a dry start for

the early rises, for southern Scotland and east of northern, rain

will spread in. Many western areas will stay dry as will the north of
