Good evening, you're watching Monday's Look North. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Why a leading feminist is challenging the town's | :00:00. | :00:10.
He's creating something which is actually extreme and intolerant. | :00:11. | :00:14.
And what Shipley needs to be is united. | :00:15. | :00:15.
It's got nothing to do with the people of Shipley, | :00:16. | :00:18.
or representing Shipley in Parliament. | :00:19. | :00:19.
It's a publicity stunt for a London-based party | :00:20. | :00:24.
and I suppose that's all they are really interested in. | :00:25. | :00:30.
More affordable homes in part of Yorkshire. | :00:31. | :00:34.
Will cutting red tape and speeding up the planning process | :00:35. | :00:36.
The football season is going to the wire - | :00:37. | :00:40.
Leeds and Hudderfield stutter but Wednesday secure | :00:41. | :00:43.
And we'll look back on an historic day as thousands turn out | :00:44. | :00:50.
to celebrate the railways' past, present and future. | :00:51. | :00:59.
Fine weather we had yesterday, distant memory in the next 24 hours. | :01:00. | :01:06.
Heavy and perhaps a wintry showers on the way. Join me for the | :01:07. | :01:09.
forecast. It's less than a week | :01:10. | :01:14.
since the Prime Minister called the general election, | :01:15. | :01:18.
but already there are signs that things are turning nasty in the safe | :01:19. | :01:21.
Conservative seat of Shipley. The Women's Equality Party | :01:22. | :01:24.
is fielding a candidate against Philip Davies | :01:25. | :01:26.
because of his views on women. Mr Davies has been criticised | :01:27. | :01:29.
in the past for his opinions So what do local people make of this | :01:30. | :01:31.
"battle of the sexes"? Danni Hewson is in | :01:32. | :01:37.
Shipley for us tonight. Harry, for the last 12 years, Philip | :01:38. | :01:54.
Davies has been the MP here. His constituency office is just down the | :01:55. | :01:58.
road. He is a popular MP. At the last election he got a massive | :01:59. | :02:04.
majority, the largest of any of the West Yorkshire Conservative MPs. | :02:05. | :02:07.
However, some of the comments he has made about feminism and women's | :02:08. | :02:13.
rights have provoked controversy. So much so, deceit has become the | :02:14. | :02:18.
target of the relatively new women's quality target. Now that in itself | :02:19. | :02:24.
has provoked mixed reviews from people here in Shipley including | :02:25. | :02:28.
women's groups. Including men's health, male suicide | :02:29. | :02:36.
rates and the underperformance of boys in schools. These must be | :02:37. | :02:43.
issues addressed in a considered way. Philip Davie says he is putting | :02:44. | :02:52.
focus on men's rights but his views on domestic violence have angered | :02:53. | :02:58.
women's groups. The women's a quality party have chosen this C2 | :02:59. | :03:01.
contest and it didn't come as a surprise. Philip Davie is, incumbent | :03:02. | :03:08.
MP has taken the privilege of being a local MP the Shipley to focus his | :03:09. | :03:13.
national platform on an anti-woman crusade. It is not a very good for | :03:14. | :03:18.
the women of Shipley or the men of Shipley. He is creating something | :03:19. | :03:25.
which is extreme and intolerant. For his part, Philip Davies says he | :03:26. | :03:29.
welcomes the debate. I have asked the party to name one thing in 12 | :03:30. | :03:33.
years as the MP I have ever said which would call for women to be | :03:34. | :03:36.
treated less favourably than men and they haven't been able to find one | :03:37. | :03:41.
thing in 12 years as an MP. I have never said such a thing and I never | :03:42. | :03:46.
would say such a thing. This is just a publicity stunt. It has got | :03:47. | :03:50.
nothing to do with the people of Shipley or representing Shipley in | :03:51. | :03:55.
Parliament. Today's political wrangling is just noise but this | :03:56. | :03:59.
play session in the heart of Shipley, politics is not a new topic | :04:00. | :04:06.
of conversation. But here it is a quality and stability that top the | :04:07. | :04:10.
agenda. Making sure centres like this get funded because it is | :04:11. | :04:15.
important for children to be able to access these services. Brexit is the | :04:16. | :04:20.
most important thing to me. However, being a father and a grandfather, I | :04:21. | :04:24.
can see all the services that have been caught, specially for the | :04:25. | :04:28.
younger end. As well as concern it may become a one issue campaign, | :04:29. | :04:34.
others are happy campaigner from outside of the area has been | :04:35. | :04:38.
parachuted in. If his party are serious about change, I want to see | :04:39. | :04:42.
them working with local residents in Shipley to give them a voice and | :04:43. | :04:46.
support so their voice shall be heard. That is what a general | :04:47. | :04:51.
election is about. Labour will stand their own candidate well the Liberal | :04:52. | :04:54.
Democrats and Green Party are considering their options. | :04:55. | :04:59.
So I mixed response here. I am joined by Jenny Wilson. In the | :05:00. | :05:11.
summer last year, Philip was on a platform for the Justice for men and | :05:12. | :05:14.
boys group which were men's rights group. He described women who | :05:15. | :05:19.
campaigned for gender equality as feminists who want their cake and | :05:20. | :05:24.
eat it. Some local women started to bake cakes and distribute them with | :05:25. | :05:28.
information about some of the things Philip has been saying, to local | :05:29. | :05:32.
people and we get donations for the local women's refuge and also a | :05:33. | :05:38.
mental health charity. You have history with Philip Davies, what has | :05:39. | :05:42.
been your reaction by the women's equality party, did you know about | :05:43. | :05:48.
it? No, we didn't. It has been a shock, to be honest. We have been | :05:49. | :05:52.
working locally for quite some time and we have a strong network on | :05:53. | :05:58.
social media and we have 1500 women who came to the women's in January | :05:59. | :06:03.
and we have good networks locally and we were working with all the | :06:04. | :06:07.
parties, we are a nonpartisan group, to see if we could find some unity. | :06:08. | :06:16.
Among those different political parties, try and do politics better | :06:17. | :06:20.
than the kind of politics that Philip has been doing. Broadly, you | :06:21. | :06:24.
welcome the decision but would have liked it to have been done in a | :06:25. | :06:29.
different way? Of course, it is great to have attention for Shipley | :06:30. | :06:34.
for something other than the kind of politics Philip represents, but | :06:35. | :06:37.
flying in a candidate from London who has no local connections, who | :06:38. | :06:44.
hasn't worked with the local grassroots groups, it doesn't | :06:45. | :06:48.
inspire us it will bring the kind of unity and opposition we need to | :06:49. | :06:52.
represent Shipley better as a place that isn't a place full of the kind | :06:53. | :06:56.
of things Philip Davie says. Thank you for joining us. | :06:57. | :06:59.
And there'll be a full list of candidates standing | :07:00. | :07:01.
in the Shipley constituency on the BBC News website once | :07:02. | :07:04.
In other news from around the region and a 30 year-old man | :07:05. | :07:08.

A 48-hour strike by RMT union members working | :07:41. | :07:43.
for Virgin Trains East Coast has been suspended. | :07:44. | :07:45.
The strike was due to take place this Friday and Saturday, | :07:46. | :07:48.
the same weekend as the Tour de Yorkshire. | :07:49. | :07:51.
The RMT union says it's suspended the action following progress | :07:52. | :07:54.
which has been made in talks with the rail operator. | :07:55. | :07:59.
The company behind the project to resurface roads and pavements | :08:00. | :08:02.
in Sheffield has revealed it's received 5,500 complaints | :08:03. | :08:04.
More than 2000 complaints were about street lighting, | :08:05. | :08:11.
500 of them were about concerns over the removal and | :08:12. | :08:13.

For thousands of people living in rural parts of the region | :08:30. | :08:41.
buying their own house has become an unobtainable dream. | :08:42. | :08:43.
A pilot scheme has been launched in North Yorkshire to try | :08:44. | :08:46.
Hambleton District Council wants to see more affordable houses built | :08:47. | :08:49.
and has promised to help by cutting red tape and speeding up | :08:50. | :08:52.
Rural North Yorkshire has long been a desirable place to live. | :08:53. | :08:59.
But buying a house here is not that simple. | :09:00. | :09:03.
There's not many for sale and those that are, are often | :09:04. | :09:06.
Chad and his partner Caroline are first-time | :09:07. | :09:13.
buyers who are keen to live in rural North Yorkshire. | :09:14. | :09:16.
Affordable options though, are few and far between. | :09:17. | :09:18.
The only option would be to go into a town or city. | :09:19. | :09:23.
We'd have to move further away to get the cheaper houses, | :09:24. | :09:26.
but we don't want to move away from our area because all | :09:27. | :09:28.
In Hambleton, a large rural district of North Yorkshire, | :09:29. | :09:32.
a pilot scheme has been launched to build more housing | :09:33. | :09:34.
The scheme is being led by the council and in market | :09:35. | :09:42.
towns like Easingwold, it aims to speed up the planning | :09:43. | :09:45.
process by matching potential buyers with a land owners, | :09:46. | :09:52.
process by matching potential buyers with land owners, small builders | :09:53. | :09:54.
The council has also promised a more flexible approach to planning. | :09:55. | :09:58.
Good news for the Jacksons, whose plans to build their own home | :09:59. | :10:01.
I hope so, it would be wonderful if we did. | :10:02. | :10:04.
There's been lots of ideas, lots of words that have been put | :10:05. | :10:07.
into my head that we can possibly use to help the planning forwards. | :10:08. | :10:12.
We feel that this is away by developing smaller sites, | :10:13. | :10:15.
it is something that is appropriate for a village development, | :10:16. | :10:19.
By this time next year, it's hoped the pilot scheme | :10:20. | :10:26.
will have made a difference, and allowing people like Dan | :10:27. | :10:29.
and Caroline to stay and live in these rural communities. | :10:30. | :10:32.
Phil Connell, BBC Look North, North Yorkshire. | :10:33. | :10:38.
School children have been given the chance to find out what it's | :10:39. | :10:41.
like to run with Olympic gold medallist Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill | :10:42. | :10:44.
at a special event at Chatsworth House today. | :10:45. | :10:46.
Dame Jess was there to launch her new running festival which will take | :10:47. | :10:50.
The idea is to get youngsters and their families moving | :10:51. | :10:53.
It's not every day you get to go running with a Dame. | :10:54. | :11:07.
But that's exactly what these youngsters got to do this morning | :11:08. | :11:12.
with the stunning backdrop of the Chatsworth | :11:13. | :11:14.
Less than a week from visiting Buckingham Palace, | :11:15. | :11:17.
Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill was here launching her family run, | :11:18. | :11:19.
To receive that Damehood was so special, it does bring | :11:20. | :11:23.
all the memories of starting out in athletic as a ten-year-old | :11:24. | :11:25.
and just enjoying running and throwing and never ever | :11:26. | :11:28.
expecting that it would end in a Damehood. | :11:29. | :11:32.
Was it a bit nerve-racking on the day? | :11:33. | :11:43.
Yeah, you just don't want to do anything wrong and you want to get | :11:44. | :11:47.
the right time and make sure you curtsy and you step | :11:48. | :11:50.
It was just brilliant and Prince William was | :11:51. | :11:53.
She may now have retired from athletics, but Dame Jess wants | :11:54. | :11:58.
everyone to realise that keeping fit is essential for a healthy life. | :11:59. | :12:01.
Sport and being active has been my whole life for so many years | :12:02. | :12:04.
I'm very much wanting to keep fit and keep as active as possible | :12:05. | :12:09.
and I want to encourage as many people to enjoy running, | :12:10. | :12:12.
enjoy sport and enjoy living a healthy lifestyle. | :12:13. | :12:17.
After all that, time for a quick sit down and some questions | :12:18. | :12:20.
You've got a question for Dame Jessica, haven't you? | :12:21. | :12:23.
Since I was ten and I'm now 31, so a very, very long time. | :12:24. | :12:33.
If you had to pick another event, what would it be? | :12:34. | :12:36.
So out of all the events I did, my favourite event | :12:37. | :12:39.
was the 100m hurdles, so that was my absolute favourite. | :12:40. | :12:42.
Is it odd when people call you Dame Jessica? | :12:43. | :12:47.
It's hoped thousands of people will step into their running shoes | :12:48. | :12:51.
and join Dame Jessica on July the 9th. | :12:52. | :12:54.
Ian White, BBC Look North, Chatsworth. | :12:55. | :13:05.
Couldn't actually see him wearing his running shoes. He started the | :13:06. | :13:12.
400 metres at two p.m., just finished now. It is all happening in | :13:13. | :13:19.
sport. Football is getting very tense. | :13:20. | :13:22.
Sheffield Wednesday took a big step towards securing | :13:23. | :13:24.
a place in the playoffs with a fifth successive win. | :13:25. | :13:26.
Goals from Steven Fletcher and Gary Hooper helped them | :13:27. | :13:28.
The Owls are in fourth place with two matches left, | :13:29. | :13:32.
and they'll be hoping to go one better than last season | :13:33. | :13:35.
when they lost in the playoff final at Wembley. | :13:36. | :13:37.
Also chasing promotion to the Premier League | :13:38. | :13:39.
are Huddersfield Town, who've been in the top six | :13:40. | :13:41.
The Terriers knew a win over Fulham on Saturday | :13:42. | :13:46.
Dave Edwards was at the John Smiths Stadium. | :13:47. | :13:51.
They've been cheering louder than ever hear this season. | :13:52. | :14:00.
They've been cheering louder than ever here this season. | :14:01. | :14:02.
Huddersfield Town, the surprise package of the Championship. | :14:03. | :14:04.
Less than ?200 for a season of Premier League football | :14:05. | :14:07.
They're not there yet, but this is a terrific | :14:08. | :14:10.
time to be a terrier, as these two no better than most. | :14:11. | :14:13.
I've been supporting them since 1952, I think it was. | :14:14. | :14:15.
Can't remember much about it, but the atmosphere this time, | :14:16. | :14:18.
The year we went up to the First Division in 79, | :14:19. | :14:31.
80 was possibly better because we actually got there | :14:32. | :14:34.
But obviously in terms of achievement, this is incredible. | :14:35. | :14:38.
With just three minutes played, this was the perfect start. | :14:39. | :14:42.
Chris Lowe was fouled, but picked himself up and made | :14:43. | :14:46.
And scores, to send Huddersfield on their way. | :14:47. | :14:53.
From there, Town's opponents showed why they are also in with a chance | :14:54. | :14:56.
of promotion with four goals before half-time. | :14:57. | :15:00.
We have to say, Huddersfield's defending help them out. | :15:01. | :15:03.
I wasn't unhappy with the attitude or I wasn't unhappy with the effort, | :15:04. | :15:12.
it was only in which problems, mistakes in concentration | :15:13. | :15:15.
So, we know why we lost this game and now we leave it behind us, learn | :15:16. | :15:20.
Despite this defeat, there's still a positive mood | :15:21. | :15:25.
The Terriers now need two more points to book a play-off place | :15:26. | :15:32.
Leeds United though will need a lot more than that. | :15:33. | :15:36.
Burton Albion that is, who beat them 2-1. | :15:37. | :15:40.
By the time Kyle Bartley bundled this one in, | :15:41. | :15:44.
deployed as an emergency striker, the damage had already been done. | :15:45. | :15:48.
It leaves Leeds three points adrift of the top six | :15:49. | :15:52.
Let's have a look at the run-in then. | :15:53. | :16:00.
Sheffield Wednesday face a tough game against Fulham | :16:01. | :16:02.
Huddersfield have a game in hand and could clinch their playoff | :16:03. | :16:06.
And Leeds really need to win both their matches and hope other | :16:07. | :16:10.
Well tonight a cast of former Leeds United stars | :16:11. | :16:15.
are at the premiere of a new film celebrating the club's glory days | :16:16. | :16:19.
It's called "Do You Want to Win" and it's headlining | :16:20. | :16:24.
We have been speaking to Wilkinson himself, who is crossing his fingers | :16:25. | :16:38.
the 2017 team can still make it into the Premier League. | :16:39. | :16:42.
I hope so, because football needs Leeds United and needs them in the | :16:43. | :16:48.
top sphere. Never give up hope. They have a great young manager, fresh, | :16:49. | :16:54.
ambitious, good coach, knows what he wants. So they have got every | :16:55. | :16:55.
chance. A minute's silence was held before | :16:56. | :16:59.
Bradford City's home game against AFC Wimbledon, | :17:00. | :17:02.
as players and supporters remembered the 56 people who died in a fire | :17:03. | :17:06.
at Valley Parade in 1985. The Bantams won the game 3-0, | :17:07. | :17:09.
securing their place in the League One playoffs, | :17:10. | :17:11.

Sheffield United have agreed to re-sign Ched Evans | :17:14. | :17:18.
for a fee of around ?500,000. Evans last played for the Blades | :17:19. | :17:23.
in 2012 before a rape conviction saw him serve two and a half | :17:24. | :17:26.
years in prison. He was found not guilty | :17:27. | :17:28.
at a retrial and currently plays for Chesterfield, | :17:29. | :17:32.
who've been relegated to League 2. In rugby league, there | :17:33. | :17:36.
was arguably one of the biggest Challenge Cup upsets of all time, | :17:37. | :17:39.
as Championship side Swinton beat Super League strugglers | :17:40. | :17:41.
Huddersfield. With just four minutes to play, | :17:42. | :17:44.
this try from Luke Waterworth gave the Lions an astonishing victory | :17:45. | :17:47.
by 28-24 - their first win over And you can see the pick | :17:48. | :17:51.
of the weekend's action on the Super League Show tonight | :17:52. | :18:01.

for Gomersal's Lois Toulson in the women's ten | :18:16. | :18:20.
metre synchro as well. And in the cricket, | :18:21. | :18:22.
there was a batting masterclass from Yorkshire captain Gary Ballance | :18:23. | :18:25.
in their County Championship Having already scored a century | :18:26. | :18:27.
in the first innings, he followed it up with a double | :18:28. | :18:32.
century in the second He has had a fantastic staff. He is | :18:33. | :18:50.
leading from the front. We are short of bowlers, so at the moment I think | :18:51. | :18:54.
Gary Ballance has been an inspired choice. Scarborough athletic play | :18:55. | :19:05.
tomorrow in a play-off match, you missed that. Sorry. | :19:06. | :19:10.
We often hear how schools are strapped for cash | :19:11. | :19:12.
A school in South Yorkshire has been forced to close its library and turn | :19:13. | :19:17.
it into another classroom to accommodate a surge | :19:18. | :19:19.
Well the Head teacher at Birkwood Primary School | :19:20. | :19:24.
near Barnsley was so upset about losing the facility, | :19:25. | :19:26.
she came up with a 'novel' solution to encourage the kids to read. | :19:27. | :19:29.
Michelle Lyons has been to visit the school. | :19:30. | :19:36.
The wheels on the bus go round and round. Do the wheels on your bus go | :19:37. | :19:46.
round and round? No, it is our reading bus. | :19:47. | :19:50.
# Joined the joyriders. If you're | :19:51. | :19:55.
wondering what a reading bus looks like, here it is. This double-decker | :19:56. | :20:01.
doubles up as a library sends this primary School in Barnsley had to | :20:02. | :20:06.
convert bears into a classroom due to an influx of pupils. Our priority | :20:07. | :20:11.
is reading, so we had to think outside the box. I bought a | :20:12. | :20:16.
double-decker bus of eBay with the support of my governing body and the | :20:17. | :20:22.
friends of the school, staff and the community and it has made it an | :20:23. | :20:25.
amazing resource for our wonderful children. It was bought from a | :20:26. | :20:33.
playgroup in London, but it hasn't always been based down south. A | :20:34. | :20:38.
little bit of research revealed it started its service in the | :20:39. | :20:41.
neighbouring village of Shettleston before joining athlete in London for | :20:42. | :20:48.
ten years before becoming a Playbus in Lewisham. Now it has returned | :20:49. | :20:54.
home. I think it is real good for people to read. And I think I might | :20:55. | :21:01.
enjoy it. I like it because it has an upstairs and you can read. At | :21:02. | :21:10.
first, people thought it was a crazy idea, but soon everybody got on | :21:11. | :21:16.
board. My reaction work, the head teacher had finally flipped her lead | :21:17. | :21:21.
and was cracking up, actually. But what a fantastic idea it's turned | :21:22. | :21:26.
out to be. I think it will inspire the children into reading. The bus | :21:27. | :21:33.
may have come to the end of its journey, but these children are just | :21:34. | :21:36.
beginning there is, in two books that will transport them into the | :21:37. | :21:38.
depths of their imagination. Doesn't matter where you read, or | :21:39. | :21:54.
what you read, as long as you do. Unless it is Paul Hudson's weather | :21:55. | :21:55.
book. Is it my turn? But there was | :21:56. | :22:00.
something else to come. Let's look at the pictures that have | :22:01. | :22:16.
come in. This is a red kite flying over Harrogate. Thanks for sending | :22:17. | :22:25.
that in. The second is some clouds above Milton Saltaire. And the third | :22:26. | :22:30.
one, look at the contrast between the oilseed and the clouds. We will | :22:31. | :22:37.
have loads of those clouds are. You have the usual suspects, weather | :22:38. | :22:44.
watchers, Twitter and Paul the weatherman. | :22:45. | :22:49.
You are on Insta gram? There is no age limit. Let's look at | :22:50. | :22:55.
the headlines. Pretty unsettled, wintry showers and local | :22:56. | :22:59.
thunderstorms. Bit of Heol thrown in. The air is coming from the | :23:00. | :23:06.
Arctic circle. The ingredients are there for some Big Show so don't be | :23:07. | :23:10.
surprised if you catch a thunderstorm tomorrow and a bit of | :23:11. | :23:15.
snow in places. Into the North, showers feeding from the north and | :23:16. | :23:20.
many are fine at the moment, but we will see a scattering of showers in | :23:21. | :23:23.
places. By the end of the night, showers will be largely confined to | :23:24. | :23:29.
eastern areas. Bit of snow for the North Yorkshire Moors inland and it | :23:30. | :23:35.
will be cold, lowest temperatures Sheffield, Penistone about zero, | :23:36. | :23:39.
plus one so there will be a frost in places. The sunrises in the morning | :23:40. | :23:53.
at 4:44 a.m.. Showers in coastal areas and then they will develop | :23:54. | :23:57.
more widely. Into the afternoon it is a showery picture. Showers quite | :23:58. | :24:02.
heavy in places, hailstones, thunder and a bit of snow thrown in. Let's | :24:03. | :24:09.
look at the top temperatures. Fresh north-west winds, highs of eight or | :24:10. | :24:14.
9 degrees, nine Celsius is 48 Fahrenheit. The further outlook will | :24:15. | :24:20.
follow later at 10:30 p.m.. That is the forecast. | :24:21. | :24:22.
Thousands of people lined the East Coast main line yesterday | :24:23. | :24:28.
Four generations of trains spanning the past, present | :24:29. | :24:31.
and future of rail travel, running in parallel | :24:32. | :24:33.
For many it was a proud and emotional moment. | :24:34. | :24:36.
We leave you tonight with those fantastic scenes. | :24:37. | :24:45.
I am back for the latest news, but enjoy these pictures. | :24:46. | :25:05.
You have four trains running together in parallel and they | :25:06. | :25:35.
represent the history of East Coast mainline express passenger travel. | :25:36. | :25:39.
That is very significant and I don't think we have had for train running | :25:40. | :25:43.
together like that is since probably before the war. | :25:44. | :25:52.
I have come in from Stoke Newington Hackney. Friday evening hours | :25:53. | :25:58.
listening to BBC London and they said they would be sending these | :25:59. | :26:03.
trains into York train station, so I came up and said, the Sunday I will | :26:04. | :26:05.
be down here. It is an absolutely fantastic | :26:06. | :26:20.
turnout. That has been people around since 6am and it shows the | :26:21. | :26:24.
enthusiasm people have got to see an event like this. | :26:25. | :26:52.
There are times in the life of a nation | :26:53. | :26:54.
when the choices we make define the character of our country, | :26:55. | :26:59.
times when people stand up and demand real, significant change. | :27:00. | :27:05. |
