Good evening and welcome to the late Look North. | :00:08. | :00:09.
Tonight: Yorkshire's coastal communities are braced for a rough | :00:10. | :00:12.
night as strong winds could produce a tidal surge and floods. | :00:13. | :00:14.
And tributes for Norman Rimmington as a Barnsley footballing | :00:15. | :00:16.
And some severe weather over the next 24 hours. I'll have the | :00:17. | :00:28.
forecast shortly. Tonight, coastal resorts on the east | :00:29. | :00:32.
coast are bracing themselves against bad weather as a tidal surge | :00:33. | :00:34.
is predicted in the early There are currently six flood | :00:35. | :00:37.
warnings in our region from Sandsend Residents there have | :00:38. | :00:42.
spent the day putting out Our reporter Phil | :00:43. | :00:48.
Bodmer joins us now. What can you tell us? Don't be | :00:49. | :01:03.
fooled by this deceptive calm here where it's all tranquil because it | :01:04. | :01:07.
could get a bit wild later tonight. This is what they've been doing. | :01:08. | :01:13.
Shutters along the properties and businesses, traders battening down | :01:14. | :01:18.
the hatches. This is the Lord Nelson pub, they've spent much of the | :01:19. | :01:21.
afternoon preparing the property should the worst happen. There are | :01:22. | :01:28.
two high tides, at one tomorrow morning and again in the afternoon. | :01:29. | :01:33.
Let's talk to somebody with expertise in these matters, Mark, a | :01:34. | :01:39.
seafarer the 28 years. How high are the waves? The waves around here | :01:40. | :01:46.
tomorrow morning won't be so big in the morning, they will be a lot | :01:47. | :01:50.
bigger in the afternoon with the wind and tide. Four to six metres. | :01:51. | :01:57.
When you are sure, it's a lot worse. Conditions are bad at sea, but you | :01:58. | :02:01.
say there's a high tide tomorrow morning at about 4:20am, but you're | :02:02. | :02:07.
more concerned in the afternoon. In the morning you don't get the wind. | :02:08. | :02:12.
That will come through in the next five or six hours. It will be | :02:13. | :02:16.
tomorrow afternoon with the wind and the tide and the swell from Scotland | :02:17. | :02:21.
that will be together and cause more devastation. You were here in 2013 | :02:22. | :02:26.
and it was bad then, do you think it will be as bad this time? I don't | :02:27. | :02:35.
think it will be as bad but it will come over the road and cause some | :02:36. | :02:38.
damage. It won't be as bad as 2013, I don't think. Not as long for the | :02:39. | :02:41.
swell to build. The Million Pound Drop damage and a big clear up | :02:42. | :02:45.
operation. We hope that won't happen again. A lot of traders will stay up | :02:46. | :02:50.
overnight to keep an eye on things. I don't blame them. It won't be as | :02:51. | :02:56.
bad in the morning as it will be in the afternoon. We'll keep an eye on | :02:57. | :03:01.
that. The advice is to stay tuned to local forecasts, given I on the | :03:02. | :03:06.
Environment Agency website BBC local radio is on there until 1am. York, | :03:07. | :03:11.
Leeds and Sheffield are on air right now and there's more information | :03:12. | :03:15.
tomorrow morning BBC breakfast. Thanks. | :03:16. | :03:19.
Next tonight, momentum is building for one elected Mayor to serve | :03:20. | :03:22.
Labour council leaders have indicated that they're now willing | :03:23. | :03:25.
to consider the idea, which had previously | :03:26. | :03:27.
It comes on the day that this year's elections | :03:28. | :03:30.
for a South Yorkshire Mayor have been called off. | :03:31. | :03:32.
Our correspondent Danni Hewson can explain. | :03:33. | :03:34.
It's worked for London - having one figurehead to fight | :03:35. | :03:37.
for the capital has brought added cash, investment and prosperity. | :03:38. | :03:42.
The Government thinks it can work for the rest of the country. | :03:43. | :03:46.
Six areas will vote for their own Mayor in May. | :03:47. | :03:48.
These include the big cities of Manchester, | :03:49. | :03:53.
The Mayors get to wrestle control of a whole load of power | :03:54. | :03:59.
from Westminster and it comes with a pot of cash. | :04:00. | :04:02.
?30 million a year - that's almost ?1 billion over 30 years. | :04:03. | :04:07.
As it stands, Yorkshire won't get any. | :04:08. | :04:11.
This deal would have secured that cash for South Yorkshire | :04:12. | :04:14.
Now, after a legal challenge over Chesterfield's involvement, it's | :04:15. | :04:19.
A prospect the Government doesn't relish. | :04:20. | :04:25.
The Government is committed to that deal and I would encourage | :04:26. | :04:28.
South Yorkshire leaders to remain committed to that deal. | :04:29. | :04:30.
If they walk away from that deal, we will take the deal off the table | :04:31. | :04:33.
and that means that that money and those powers will not be | :04:34. | :04:36.
But today, supporters of a Yorkshire-wide Mayor seized | :04:37. | :04:40.
on the delay and now Doncaster and Barnsley, along | :04:41. | :04:43.
council leaders, have said they will consider the option. | :04:44. | :04:48.
We're happy to take this forward, to talk about the opportunities, | :04:49. | :04:52.
where we could work together, and see whether a Yorkshire-wide | :04:53. | :04:55.
mayoral model could actually help us unlock the deals we have | :04:56. | :04:58.
Many business leaders believe a single Yorkshire Mayor would pack | :04:59. | :05:04.
a bigger punch and have blamed Labour leaders for stalling. | :05:05. | :05:08.
But today, their national leader denies they've | :05:09. | :05:10.
Look, they're passionately representing their areas | :05:11. | :05:13.
That's what drives people in local government. | :05:14. | :05:17.
They want to get the best deal for the areas they represent. | :05:18. | :05:21.
But it's taken two years already and the stakes are high. | :05:22. | :05:24.
The worry is, in a sense, that the difference, | :05:25. | :05:26.
the divide between these places, particularly their ability | :05:27. | :05:29.
to engage with Government, not only now but in the future, | :05:30. | :05:32.
the worry is that the divides between those places that have | :05:33. | :05:35.
those Mayors and those that don't will get ever starker | :05:36. | :05:37.
So after months, indeed years, of saying no, why is it now possible | :05:38. | :05:42.
that Yorkshire's political leaders could accept one regional Mayor? | :05:43. | :05:48.
How would it work and who might it be? | :05:49. | :05:52.
Questions which the Sunday Politics programme this weekend | :05:53. | :05:54.
In other news, it's been confirmed that the leisure centres | :05:55. | :06:02.
in Knottingley and Castleford will close on February 3rd. | :06:03. | :06:04.
Wakefield District Council say the pools are in a dilapidated state | :06:05. | :06:07.
Protesters campaigning to keep the pools open say older people | :06:08. | :06:11.
and children will struggle to travel to the new centre, which will be | :06:12. | :06:15.
The reopening of a West Yorkshire bridge damaged by the Boxing Day | :06:16. | :06:21.
floods has been delayed by bad weather. | :06:22. | :06:24.
Elland Bridge was due to reopen for cyclists and pedestrians | :06:25. | :06:27.
by the end of this week, but rain and low temperatures | :06:28. | :06:30.
have held up work to waterproof the structure. | :06:31. | :06:33.
Calderdale Council say they're hopeful work will be | :06:34. | :06:35.
We tend to use the word "legend" a little too easily these days, | :06:36. | :06:43.
but today in Barnsley we said farewell to a genuine one. | :06:44. | :06:46.
Norman Rimmington gave his life to Barnsley Football Club. | :06:47. | :06:49.
He did everything at the place, from coach to kitman. | :06:50. | :06:52.
Well, Harry would say "a good old boy". | :06:53. | :06:58.
All Saints Church, Darton - packed to the rafters. | :06:59. | :07:01.
And ahead, a perfect service to say farewell to Mr Barnsley. | :07:02. | :07:05.
# Give me joy in my heart, keep me praising... | :07:06. | :07:09.
And Mick McCarthy, Barnsley legend, needed all his strength | :07:10. | :07:11.
As a young player, he gave me so much support, | :07:12. | :07:19.
I think he always saw the best in people. | :07:20. | :07:27.
And probably one of the reasons why I'm stood here and have had | :07:28. | :07:34.
Looked after the players, did the washing, nursed | :07:35. | :07:51.
I've known Norman all my life, and his family. | :07:52. | :08:05.
You knew that on a match day, if you came, you saw | :08:06. | :08:10.
Norman sat in his seat, everything was fine with the world | :08:11. | :08:12.
Well done to the football club as well. | :08:13. | :08:16.
They made it so special for his family in every way. | :08:17. | :08:20.
Mick McCarthy, he had Mick as a boy, my dad, and he's always | :08:21. | :08:25.
phoned my dad up even when he left Barnsley. | :08:26. | :08:27.
Like people who have been to see him while he's been in the home, | :08:28. | :08:36.
Danny Wilson came to see him at 7.30 one morning, before | :08:37. | :08:38.
The match, we were invited after he died, just to see | :08:39. | :08:47.
He's just been our dad, but when you see everybody | :08:48. | :08:52.
The service itself, and the people that attended the service, speaks | :08:53. | :08:58.
Farewell to Rimmo, never to be forgotten. | :08:59. | :09:06.
Let's get an update on the weather. It will be stormy. | :09:07. | :09:24.
Yes. Lots of talk about severe weather. There is still a weather | :09:25. | :09:29.
warning in force, a yellow warning for snow mainly affecting West | :09:30. | :09:32.
Yorkshire and South Yorkshire, creeping into North Yorkshire. This | :09:33. | :09:38.
is the storm system that brought snow to southern parts. There are a | :09:39. | :09:43.
couple of showers that will drift in from the east. Tonight, away from | :09:44. | :09:48.
the snow, the main thing, look at this map, turning blue, a couple of | :09:49. | :09:52.
showers across eastern coastal parts. Overnight, temperatures of 0 | :09:53. | :10:00.
Celsius. It will be cold in town let alone across rural parts. Widespread | :10:01. | :10:06.
ice tomorrow morning. Eastern coast, severe gales and waves. It will not | :10:07. | :10:13.
be a great day. We will see some bright, sunny weather. It will be | :10:14. | :10:19.
cold again. Three or four Celsius. Very blustery. Tomorrow night, the | :10:20. | :10:25.
map turns blue again. Fleeting showers from the north. We lose | :10:26. | :10:30.
them, but we don't take a breather because we still have a lot of ice | :10:31. | :10:34.
that will form tomorrow night into Saturday. Saturday will be another | :10:35. | :10:40.
cold day. Another warning for snow on Saturday. A couple of showers | :10:41. | :10:45.
turning heavy. On high ground. We are going to see some sunshine is | :10:46. | :10:51.
well on Saturday. Sunday, some snow first thing is likely. It gets | :10:52. | :10:56.
milder then. State you'd do the latest forecast and do stay safe. | :10:57. | :11:01.
Time from the national forecast. Good night. | :11:02. | :11:02.
note. If that's not your sort of thing, Sunday will be cloudier and | :11:03. | :11:03.
milder. Good evening. It was such a mild | :11:04. | :11:13.
December, wasn't it, but winter has arrived. Tomorrow morning, again, | :11:14. | :11:19.
could be prising the wipers off the frozen windscreen. Yes, it's going | :11:20. | :11:22.
to be cold tonight, whether | :11:23. | :11:23. |
