Tonight: Staff at Northern Rail are to go on strike - | :00:00. | :00:07.
in a row over who opens the train doors. | :00:08. | :00:09.
And in an emotional interview, Jo Cox's sister talks | :00:10. | :00:11.
about the effect her murder has had on their family. | :00:12. | :00:16.
I have known emotions that I've never known. | :00:17. | :00:19.
I've never been scared in my life - and I'm scared. | :00:20. | :00:29.
Last night was a cold one but what's in store? I'll have the live | :00:30. | :00:34.
forecast, later in the programme. Passengers on some of Yorkshire's | :00:35. | :00:40.
busiest commuter lines are facing disruption, | :00:41. | :00:43.
after staff working for Northern Rail announced strike | :00:44. | :00:44.
action in a dispute over who opens Drivers and guards who belong | :00:45. | :00:47.
to the RMT union voted overwhelmingly in favour | :00:48. | :00:52.
of industrial action. They'll walk out for 24 | :00:53. | :00:54.
hours on March the 13th. Our reporter Ali Fortescue | :00:55. | :00:57.
is at Leeds station tonight. The big question, the question | :00:58. | :01:16.
that's been causing commuter misery elsewhere in the country, should | :01:17. | :01:19.
train drivers be the ones opening and closing train doors. The RMT | :01:20. | :01:25.
safety at risk, but Northern say safety at risk, but Northern say | :01:26. | :01:28.
they hope a constructive resolution can be reached. There will be a lot | :01:29. | :01:32.
of disgruntled commuters if the strike goes ahead next month. | :01:33. | :01:35.
STATION ANNOUNCEMENT: No trains on some routes and... | :01:36. | :01:37.
A different county but it's the same issue. | :01:38. | :01:39.
For Southern passengers scenes like these have become grimly common | :01:40. | :01:42.
in a long and bitter dispute over driver only operated trains. | :01:43. | :01:44.
Today, members of the RMT union, who work for Northern, voted to walk | :01:45. | :01:48.
We want to provide some assurance to passengers. | :01:49. | :01:51.
We're working very hard to look at our contingency arrangements | :01:52. | :01:54.
to keep as many people on the move on the 13th of March. | :01:55. | :01:58.
But between now and then we'll work hard to get the RMT round the table, | :01:59. | :02:01.
continue those discussions so we can work together to shape the future | :02:02. | :02:04.
Northern operates 2500 services a day across the North, | :02:05. | :02:10.
linking places like Barnsley and Sheffield, York, | :02:11. | :02:13.
Harrogate and Leeds, along with Bradford and the Calder | :02:14. | :02:15.
Strike action could cause commuter misery. | :02:16. | :02:21.
I've been on a few trains recently and things got a little bit hectic. | :02:22. | :02:24.
I think if they can increase the police presence at the train | :02:25. | :02:32.
station, they can at least put a guard on the train. | :02:33. | :02:34.
I don't think they need guards on trains personally. | :02:35. | :02:37.
I'm quite comfortable with the way the systems have | :02:38. | :02:39.
operated in the past, where there are no | :02:40. | :02:41.
I understand there's a need for a strike, | :02:42. | :02:46.
but it is very inconvenient for the general everyday person. | :02:47. | :02:50.
When the franchise changed hands last April, Northern promised | :02:51. | :02:52.
to invest ?500,000 on new rolling stock to be introduced next year. | :02:53. | :02:57.
The doors on those trains could be closed by a driver | :02:58. | :03:00.
rather than a guard, but the RMT union claims that's | :03:01. | :03:04.
unsafe, as many of Yorkshire's stations are unmanned. | :03:05. | :03:08.
The vast majority of train services actually have a second safety person | :03:09. | :03:12.
It leads to a more secure train and actually more accessible railway | :03:13. | :03:20.
Northern says it hopes to provide a good service when staff | :03:21. | :03:27.
strike on March the 13th, but there's no doubt this | :03:28. | :03:29.
is an issue that could be on track to cause big disruption on some | :03:30. | :03:33.
A brief look at some of the day's other stories. | :03:34. | :03:44.
Lifeboat crews and a rescue helicopter have helped a woman swept | :03:45. | :03:46.
The coastguard was called just before 6pm this evening. | :03:47. | :03:51.
The woman was trying to rescue a dog. | :03:52. | :03:53.
Both were brought to shore, cold and shocked, but otherwise unharmed. | :03:54. | :03:59.
Parliament has tonight discussed measures which delay some operations | :04:00. | :04:01.
for obese people or smokers in North Yorkshire. | :04:02. | :04:04.
In the Commons, the York Central MP Rachael Maskel described the Vale of | :04:05. | :04:07.
York Clinical Commissioning Group's policy as rationing. | :04:08. | :04:10.
The idea is to get people healthier before having surgery. | :04:11. | :04:16.
While York is the worst example of rationing, | :04:17. | :04:18.
every clinician knows that this is wrong and contravenes | :04:19. | :04:20.
I am blowing the whistle on this today, Madam Deputy Speaker, | :04:21. | :04:27.
because this policy is directly discriminatory, clinically | :04:28. | :04:31.
contra-indicated and financial perverse. | :04:32. | :04:34.
I think that it is right that clinicians make decisions | :04:35. | :04:39.
on an individual basis about what are the right treatment | :04:40. | :04:42.
options for their patients as they present, and in some cases | :04:43. | :04:46.
that may involve a direct route to surgery. | :04:47. | :04:48.
And in other cases it may involve some other intervention. | :04:49. | :04:55.
Work has begun on a new holiday park near Unstone in | :04:56. | :04:58.
The ?400 million development near Chesterfield will include | :04:59. | :05:02.
log cabins and hostels, and will create over 1000 jobs. | :05:03. | :05:07.
The complex has been planned for 30 years and developers are hoping | :05:08. | :05:10.
great access to the great outdoors will bring in the visitors. | :05:11. | :05:17.
It's absolutely fantastic news for Chesterfield and the wider area, | :05:18. | :05:19.
because the Peak Resort is going to be a gateway | :05:20. | :05:22.
Chesterfield crooked spire is less than two miles that way, | :05:23. | :05:27.
so we expect visitors will come and stay here, | :05:28. | :05:31.
The sister of the late MP Jo Cox has spoken about the impact her death | :05:32. | :05:40.
In her first in-depth interview since her older sister was killed, | :05:41. | :05:46.
Kim Leadbeater told Look North that she's still adjusting | :05:47. | :05:48.
The Batley and Spen MP was murdered in Birstall last June. | :05:49. | :05:55.
Harry went to meet Kim at her home in Cleckheaton. | :05:56. | :05:59.
When you're faced with an event like this, how do you cope? | :06:00. | :06:04.
And I am sure people who understand what trauma | :06:05. | :06:12.
is would know more about this, but you seem to go into a bit | :06:13. | :06:16.
of a self-preservation mode, and, sort of, in the days after Jo | :06:17. | :06:19.
The police were here, sort of, all the time, | :06:20. | :06:24.
so we had the counter-terrorist unit coming round and checking | :06:25. | :06:27.
the house for security, fitting extra smoke alarms and doing | :06:28. | :06:32.
all sorts of things, and, you know, asking me where I go | :06:33. | :06:35.
And I think this is the side of things that people | :06:36. | :06:39.
You know, they wouldn't know about that. | :06:40. | :06:43.
So the impact on your day-to-day life is huge. | :06:44. | :06:47.
The Kim I've met is bouncy, bubbly, confident... | :06:48. | :06:53.
I have known emotions that I've never known. | :06:54. | :07:02.
I've never been scared in my life, and I am scared, | :07:03. | :07:05.
I've never, erm, felt like I don't know what I'm doing. | :07:06. | :07:13.
I've always been confident, and my confidence has gone, a lot. | :07:14. | :07:18.
People might misinterpret what I mean by that, and, you know, | :07:19. | :07:27.
and the reality now, with social media and what have | :07:28. | :07:30.
Once you put yourself out there, you're vulnerable - | :07:31. | :07:34.
There is a great song called Sisters, there were never | :07:35. | :07:39.
such devoted sisters, and yet you two were chalk | :07:40. | :07:41.
Interestingly, we were quite different as kids. | :07:42. | :07:47.
And Jo, bizarrely, and this is what I think people | :07:48. | :07:49.
won't realise, was very shy as a child, and really didn't | :07:50. | :07:53.
have a great deal of confidence, and so I was always the younger, | :07:54. | :07:56.
sort of, more bolshie sister, and I would take the lead in things. | :07:57. | :08:00.
But, yeah, and I would, and I've never lacked confidence, | :08:01. | :08:08.
The impact of what's happened recently is that I've doubted | :08:09. | :08:12.
myself more than I've doubted myself before. | :08:13. | :08:15.
But certainly when we were children, Jo would be, you know, | :08:16. | :08:18.
You ring up and find out what time the bus comes, and you ring up | :08:19. | :08:23.
Which is why I've got so much respect for what Jo ended up | :08:24. | :08:30.
doing with her life, because that didn't come naturally. | :08:31. | :08:33.
She had to work exceptionally hard to develop her confidence, | :08:34. | :08:36.
and work exceptionally hard to be as successful as she was. | :08:37. | :08:41.
So, yeah, we were different growing up, but then what also | :08:42. | :08:43.
happened as we got older, we became much more similar, | :08:44. | :08:46.
And I feel Jo in me, and I feel I could see me in Jo much | :08:47. | :08:55.
more as we went through our adult life than when we were kids, | :08:56. | :08:58.
You can see more of Harry's interview with Kim in tonight's | :08:59. | :09:04.
edition of Look North, which is available to watch again | :09:05. | :09:06.
Sport - and a couple of our teams were in action tonight. | :09:07. | :09:13.
In League One, Bradford City drew 2-2 against MK Dons. | :09:14. | :09:15.
While in League Two, Doncaster Rovers beat | :09:16. | :09:17.
You are up-to-date with the news. We are back at 6:25am. Now the weather. | :09:18. | :09:35.
How is it looking for tomorrow? Not too bad, meteorologically | :09:36. | :09:39.
speaking, tomorrow is the first day of spring. It might look like it but | :09:40. | :09:43.
it won't feel like it, quite a cold day. If we look at the pressure | :09:44. | :09:47.
chart, our weather is largely dominated by low pressure over the | :09:48. | :09:51.
next few days. It's looking quite unsettled and changeable. We will | :09:52. | :09:54.
see various weather fronts sinking from west to east, heading in from | :09:55. | :09:58.
the Atlantic. We'll see outbreaks of rain on and off over the next few | :09:59. | :10:03.
days. This evening and overnight, we'll see a few showers and they'll | :10:04. | :10:12.
think to the south-east. Largely dry and clear towards the end of the | :10:13. | :10:14.
night. Temperatures above take a dip. Rulli, they could go to minus | :10:15. | :10:17.
figures. It's going to be a cold start, a touch of frost first thing. | :10:18. | :10:21.
Maybe a risk of ice on untreated surfaces. A decent start the day. | :10:22. | :10:25.
Variable amounts of cloud building through the afternoon. Some fairly | :10:26. | :10:29.
nice breaks and brighter spells, though one showers and these showers | :10:30. | :10:34.
could be quite heavy temperatures 7-8 Celsius tomorrow. As we make our | :10:35. | :10:38.
way through the rest of the week, overnight into Thursday it looks as | :10:39. | :10:40.
if we could have persistent band of rain. That will track up towards the | :10:41. | :10:43.
north. Things will cloud over tomorrow afternoon from the south. | :10:44. | :10:48.
Temperatures will be cold enough to see this rainfall as snow over the | :10:49. | :10:52.
highest of grounds, parts of the Pennines. If you are heading out | :10:53. | :10:56.
over the next few days, grab a brolly, because you could see a | :10:57. | :10:59.
shower at any time. Time to say goodbye. | :11:00. | :11:00.
Good evening. We are about to head into March, the days are getting | :11:01. | :11:13.
longer, but are they getting any warmer? Not really. We will get | :11:14. | :11:17.
there in the end, but we will have to be patient, not very springlike | :11:18. | :11:20.
at the moment. Some showers scattered around across England and | :11:21. | :11:25.
Wales will tend to diminish in number, a few left behind, wintry | :11:26. | :11:29.
showers across the north of Scotland, snow at low-level is, ice | :11:30. | :11:33.
as well as temperatures fall close to freezing. A cold night with a | :11:34. | :11:38.
touch of frost in a number of places. Plenty of sunshine across | :11:39. | :11:44.
southern areas first of all, but it will not last, rain spilling from | :11:45. | :11:48.
the south, the best brightness and eventually further north across the | :11:49. | :11:53.
UK. Mostly fine afternoon to come across northern areas, Scotland, | :11:54. | :11:57.
still wintry showers across the far north, but plenty of sunshine | :11:58. | :12:02.
further south. 5-6, not feeling too bad in the sunshine. The odd shower | :12:03. | :12:07.
for Northern Ireland and northern England, brightness in between those | :12:08. | :12:08. |
