Good evening and welcome to the late Look North. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Rallies in Pakistan attract hundreds of supporters for the Bradford | :00:00. | :00:00.
And a brave start for Huddersfield in their FA Cup replay | :00:07. | :00:21.
but Manchester City put a decisive end to their hopes. | :00:22. | :00:23.
And things are turning pretty unsettled for some of us tonight. | :00:24. | :00:26.
Outbreaks of rain and some snow especially on high ground. | :00:27. | :00:29.
The Bradford man who travelled to Scotland to murder a shopkeeper | :00:30. | :00:36.
has been sending messages from his prison cell | :00:37. | :00:38.
to a growing number of hardline followers in Pakistan. | :00:39. | :00:42.
Tanveer Ahmed is serving a life sentence for | :00:43. | :00:44.
the murder of Asad Shah, who he accused of committing | :00:45. | :00:47.
blasphemy, claiming he insulted the Prophet Muhammad. | :00:48. | :00:51.
But, as our Pakistan correspondent Secunder Kermani reports, | :00:52. | :00:54.
for some in Bradford, the comments have sparked anger. | :00:55. | :01:02.
Outside the family home of Tanveer Ahmed, | :01:03. | :01:04.
a 400-odd strong crowd is shouting slogans praising him. | :01:05. | :01:09.
Last year, he travelled to Scotland from his home in Bradford | :01:10. | :01:16.
to kill Asad Shah who was from the persecuted Ahmadi sect. | :01:17. | :01:21.
Ahmed believed the Glasgow shopkeeper was | :01:22. | :01:23.
committing blasphemy by claiming in online videos to be a prophet. | :01:24. | :01:27.
For many here though, that killing was justified | :01:28. | :01:32.
and they see Tanveer Ahmed as a hero. | :01:33. | :01:36.
This gathering has been organised by a hardline but | :01:37. | :01:39.
popular Pakistani cleric, Rizvi, who leads an anti-blasphemy | :01:40. | :01:43.
Rizvi says he's been speaking to Tanveer Ahmed on the phone | :01:44. | :01:51.
TRANSLATION: We are proud of the fact that he has killed. | :01:52. | :01:59.
I am proud of the fact that we are in contact. | :02:00. | :02:04.
But lots of Muslims would say one of the central | :02:05. | :02:06.
characteristics of the Prophet - Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam - | :02:07. | :02:09.
and that he forgave people who insulted him. | :02:10. | :02:14.
Even if the Prophet forgave someone, | :02:15. | :02:16.
that was because it was his personal right to do so. | :02:17. | :02:20.
But his followers don't have that right to forgive someone | :02:21. | :02:23.
The Scottish prison service has now put a stop to | :02:24. | :02:28.
Tanveer Ahmed's audio messages but Rizvi | :02:29. | :02:31.
says his reputation in Pakistan will continue to grow. | :02:32. | :02:35.
In Bradford, the local Ahmedi Association | :02:36. | :02:37.
has raised concern about support for his killing. | :02:38. | :02:41.
The government of Pakistan has given a free hand | :02:42. | :02:44.
to all the fanatics in that country who can openly preach | :02:45. | :02:48.
hatred and incite violence against other communities. | :02:49. | :02:53.
It's also shocking because Tanveer Ahmed travelled | :02:54. | :02:56.
all the way from Bradford to Glasgow to kill | :02:57. | :02:58.
an innocent person just because he did not agree with his beliefs. | :02:59. | :03:03.
Tanveer Ahmed's crime was carried out in Britain | :03:04. | :03:07.
but was inspired by ideas from Pakistan. | :03:08. | :03:09.
Now it seems it's his turn to inspire others. | :03:10. | :03:19.
Unlikely as it might seem, sometimes Yorkshire gets too much sun | :03:20. | :03:22.
and the owners of solar panels find that they can't use | :03:23. | :03:25.
all the electricity their panels produce. | :03:26. | :03:27.
But now a village in the heart of one of Britain's former | :03:28. | :03:30.
coalfields is hosting a ground-breaking trial | :03:31. | :03:33.
which could solve this problem by storing the power for later. | :03:34. | :03:36.
And, as our business correspondent Danni Hewson reports, | :03:37. | :03:39.
it could pave the way for tens of thousands more homes | :03:40. | :03:42.
Harnessing the power of light isn't just a green way of producing | :03:43. | :03:49.
energy, it is also a popular way of keeping costs down. | :03:50. | :03:53.
So when Elaine's council house provider | :03:54. | :03:55.
offered to fit them for free, she jumped at the chance, | :03:56. | :03:58.
happily changing the way she lived to make the most of solar power. | :03:59. | :04:04.
If you're using your washing machine, | :04:05. | :04:05.
So instead of having your evening meal at six o'clock, | :04:06. | :04:11.
We shall be able to revert back to an evening meal | :04:12. | :04:17.
That's because Elaine and 39 other council tenants | :04:18. | :04:22.
are taking part in a new trial, | :04:23. | :04:24.
one which looks to revolutionise the industry and make | :04:25. | :04:28.
solar a better option for those whose main electricity consumption | :04:29. | :04:32.
Typically, people aren't in during the day. | :04:33. | :04:37.
There solar power are still producing energy, but normally that | :04:38. | :04:40.
With our batteries, we can store up that energy and feed it back | :04:41. | :04:45.
into the house in the evening when people are home, | :04:46. | :04:48.
so it's all about maximising people's self-consumption. | :04:49. | :04:55.
With the drop in feed-in tariffs, the chance to save more | :04:56. | :04:58.
by using more will be appealing, particularly for private households | :04:59. | :05:02.
looking to invest in solar like this estate. | :05:03. | :05:06.
It's estimated each household saved about 40% off | :05:07. | :05:09.
their electricity bills when the solar panels went up. | :05:10. | :05:12.
With the new batteries, it's expected those | :05:13. | :05:15.
Well, solar's big drawback has always been its inflexibility. | :05:16. | :05:23.
When it's bright, there can be huge surges to the grid | :05:24. | :05:26.
and in some places, they've had to limit the number | :05:27. | :05:29.
This trial will monitor how effectively storage can smooth | :05:30. | :05:34.
If we want to fit more solar panels in a street, | :05:35. | :05:38.
what it means is that we might have to put | :05:39. | :05:41.
in bigger cables and bigger transformers | :05:42. | :05:42.
and that leads to additional cost, might lead to disruption | :05:43. | :05:45.
And it might lead to extra time scales as the customer might | :05:46. | :05:49.
have to wait, so if we can work differently in future and if we can | :05:50. | :05:53.
work on this trial, and work out how many we can fit in the future | :05:54. | :05:56.
without having to go through all those extra steps. | :05:57. | :05:59.
It's just one of many energy trials underway | :06:00. | :06:02.
and will be closely monitored over the next two years. | :06:03. | :06:09.
In the day's other news, a 32-year-old man's been arrested | :06:10. | :06:11.
on suspicion of the murder of a man in Sheffield. | :06:12. | :06:14.
23-year-old Aseel Al-Essaie was fatally shot | :06:15. | :06:18.
in the Upperthorpe area just over a week ago. | :06:19. | :06:20.
A 29-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder | :06:21. | :06:22.
and a 23-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of assisting an | :06:23. | :06:26.
Police continue to appeal for witnesses. | :06:27. | :06:32.
South Yorkshire Police have told a High Court judge | :06:33. | :06:35.
they were "strong-armed" into giving a BBC reporter information | :06:36. | :06:38.
about an investigation into Sir Cliff Richard. | :06:39. | :06:41.
The singer has taken legal action against the Corporation | :06:42. | :06:44.
and South Yorkshire Police for coverage of a raid | :06:45. | :06:46.
A collection of medals including a Victoria Cross awarded | :06:47. | :06:58.
to a Leeds soldier for his actions during the Battle of the Somme has | :06:59. | :07:01.
sold at auction for more than ?280,000. | :07:02. | :07:04.
George Sanders received the Victoria Cross, | :07:05. | :07:07.
the highest possible award for gallantry, in 1916. | :07:08. | :07:11.
His medals were bought by Lord Ashcroft and will go | :07:12. | :07:14.
at the Imperial War Museum in London. | :07:15. | :07:21.
Huddersfield's hopes of progressing to the quarter finals of the FA Cup | :07:22. | :07:24.
have been decisively ended with a 5-1 defeat | :07:25. | :07:27.
7,000 Town fans had travelled to the Etihad Stadium | :07:28. | :07:33.
cheer on their team, but it was not to be. | :07:34. | :07:36.
Mark, just take us to the match. Yes, Huddersfield Town went down 5-1 | :07:37. | :07:51.
here at the Ettie had Stadium against Manchester city and that | :07:52. | :07:56.
gulf in class is hardly surprising when you look at where both clubs | :07:57. | :08:01.
are. Man City are third in the Premier League. Huddersfield Town | :08:02. | :08:06.
are third in the championship, plus David Wagner made nine changes to | :08:07. | :08:11.
his team tonight. But it started brilliantly well for Huddersfield | :08:12. | :08:15.
Town. They went ahead after six minutes. The former Manchester city | :08:16. | :08:23.
academy player ran past Claudio Bravo and the 7200 fans went berserk | :08:24. | :08:27.
with chants of "Yorkshire, Yorkshire, Yorkshire! " For the away | :08:28. | :08:34.
end. After sustained Manchester city pressure, Sally equalised. They | :08:35. | :08:40.
conceded two more before half-time and two more after the break. City's | :08:41. | :08:47.
final goal, to make it 5-1 to Manchester city, was scored by Ian | :08:48. | :08:58.
at show in injury time. They must now go back on trying to get the | :08:59. | :09:02.
Premier League. They have a really important championship fixture | :09:03. | :09:05.
against the leaders, Newcastle United, at the John Smith Stadium on | :09:06. | :09:10.
Saturday evening and I think the manager, the players and the fans | :09:11. | :09:14.
will all agree that actually, that match against Newcastle on Saturday | :09:15. | :09:18.
is far more important than today's exit in the FA Cup. Thank you very | :09:19. | :09:20.
much. And news just in - | :09:21. | :09:23.
congratulations to Harry who's been named Regional | :09:24. | :09:25.
Presenter of the Year at the Royal Television | :09:26. | :09:27.
Society awards. Great stuff. Time to check out the | :09:28. | :09:31.
weather prospects now. For most of us, today wasn't too | :09:32. | :09:43.
bad. Turning a little wintry overnight and we may see sleet or | :09:44. | :09:48.
snow particularly on higher ground as rain, blustery winds as well. But | :09:49. | :09:52.
look at these weather watchers. Whitby today, gorgeous sunshine. If | :09:53. | :09:55.
I just overlay that on the satellite, you can see the clouds | :09:56. | :10:01.
are thinning and breaking there. Further inland, West Yorkshire | :10:02. | :10:04.
today, a lot bit cloudier and overnight, we will see more of that | :10:05. | :10:08.
cloud piling in and here comes that rain. Turning quite readily to sleet | :10:09. | :10:12.
or snow on higher ground. Some of this false to low levels as well. | :10:13. | :10:17.
Lows of one or two Celsius. Tomorrow morning, as it is close to the south | :10:18. | :10:21.
we could see ice forming across some parts of north Yorkshire for example | :10:22. | :10:25.
where it will be mostly dry but as you can see, by the time we get to | :10:26. | :10:33.
the afternoon, it looks a lot better. Things will brighten up. | :10:34. | :10:35.
Sunny spells. Still quite breezy though. Eight or nine the high with | :10:36. | :10:39.
just the odd shower. Tonight, largely dry, winds switching to be | :10:40. | :10:42.
more southerly along comes another band of rain from the south in a | :10:43. | :10:46.
second. There it is. And it is part of a weather front, if I just zoom | :10:47. | :10:51.
out as reader pressure chart. Moving to the north, all tied up to this | :10:52. | :10:55.
area of low pressure. That'll be with us on Saturday and Sunday is | :10:56. | :10:58.
returning unsettled as we head to the weekend. I'll leave you with | :10:59. | :11:02.
outlook. A whole load of 11 is. What does that mean? Maybe John Hammond | :11:03. | :11:06.
will tell you. | :11:07. | :11:11. |
