Good evening and welcome to the late Look North. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Living with dementia - the wife of a former sports star | :00:00. | :00:00.
tells us of her despair at losing a loved one to Alzheimer's. | :00:00. | :00:09.
A multi-million-pound investment in Yorkshire's steel industry | :00:10. | :00:11.
to keep Sheffield at the cutting edge. | :00:12. | :00:15.
We've got some spells of wet and windy weather to come | :00:16. | :00:18.
through Friday and the weekend, so things are turning | :00:19. | :00:20.
I'll be back later in the programme with your full live update. | :00:21. | :00:32.
Tonight, the wife of former Leeds Rugby League star | :00:33. | :00:34.
John Atkinson has told the BBC there've been times when she's | :00:35. | :00:38.
She says the strain of coping with her husband's dementia has | :00:39. | :00:45.
John developed Alzheimer's about five years ago, | :00:46. | :00:48.
and in that time has become entirely dependent on Carol. | :00:49. | :00:52.
She's now decided to share their story and here | :00:53. | :00:55.
Are we going to have a shower? No. | :00:56. | :01:03.
It's now mid-March and he's had two showers since the 2nd of January, | :01:04. | :01:16.
but it seems that it's quite common that they develop | :01:17. | :01:22.
That's a good scrub you're giving them. | :01:23. | :01:29.
He's still very sweet and very gentle, and there are parts of John | :01:30. | :01:33.
that I still recognise, but the saddest thing is, mostly, | :01:34. | :01:37.
It's just hard, because he is still, despite everything, he's still got | :01:38. | :01:54.
that resemblance of that big strong man, but it's... He's... | :01:55. | :01:58.
That's gone - the thing that made John John has gone. | :01:59. | :02:05.
Just go up the path and it's on the road. | :02:06. | :02:09.
I feel like I'm the mother of a 6-foot tall, | :02:10. | :02:19.
Might he need to go to the loo before we leave this | :02:20. | :02:30.
So it's really like being the mum of a small child. | :02:31. | :02:34.
Good morning. How are you? | :02:35. | :02:36.
I don't think you have, because you've not spilled | :02:37. | :02:49.
I never, ever understood really what what hopeless meant, | :02:50. | :02:53.
until this happened, and this absolute total lack of hope... | :02:54. | :03:09.
Is your ankle bothering you? No. | :03:10. | :03:18.
Nothing is going to get better until the person dies, | :03:19. | :03:41.
but you don't want the person to die, you just want them to get | :03:42. | :03:44.
I have got you some clean pyjamas out. | :03:45. | :03:49.
I don't want John to go into a home, because he can do exactly | :03:50. | :03:55.
what he wants here and he has got a happy life. | :03:56. | :03:58.
I don't think carers have happy lives. | :03:59. | :04:07.
Whilst I sit here and I can say I have no intention | :04:08. | :04:10.
of taking my life, it does get fairly hopeless sometimes, | :04:11. | :04:15.
and it comforts me to know that, if I need to, I can step away. | :04:16. | :04:27.
I could never leave him, but I could finish both of us off, | :04:28. | :04:36.
And if you've been affected by Carol's situation, | :04:37. | :04:47.
you can go to the BBC's Action Line website, where there | :04:48. | :04:49.
are contact details for organisations who can help. | :04:50. | :04:55.
Tonight, parents of pupils at a South Yorkshire school | :04:56. | :04:57.
were told that their children's school is losing ?1,000 a day. | :04:58. | :05:01.
The headteacher of Penistone Grammar School says a lack of cash means | :05:02. | :05:04.
staff have been made redundant and class sizes have grown. | :05:05. | :05:08.
The Government is currently consulting on proposals to change | :05:09. | :05:12.
the way schools are funded, but teachers warn it won't solve | :05:13. | :05:14.
Tonight, parents were told just how serious the school's | :05:15. | :05:20.
Penistone Grammar is currently losing ?1000 a day. | :05:21. | :05:25.
The headteacher claims it's the fourth worst funded school | :05:26. | :05:28.
One of our governors really likened our situation to holding | :05:29. | :05:33.
a ticking time bomb, and it really does feel like that. | :05:34. | :05:38.
I'm very concerned about the pressures that | :05:39. | :05:41.
puts our staff under, and we are at the absolute limit | :05:42. | :05:44.
40 staff have been made redundant here over the last five years, | :05:45. | :05:51.
and the learning support centre has closed. | :05:52. | :05:56.
Penistone Grammar is a popular school - | :05:57. | :05:58.
it's oversubscribed and it's rated as good by Ofsted - | :05:59. | :06:02.
but, with the current funding problems, parents and staff | :06:03. | :06:05.
are worried about maintaining those high standards. | :06:06. | :06:08.
Less extracurricular activities, class sizes have gone up... | :06:09. | :06:11.
We want them to have the same level of education as other schools. | :06:12. | :06:17.
It is clearly quite shocking, and clearly there is something | :06:18. | :06:20.
fundamentally wrong with how funding has been managed across the country. | :06:21. | :06:26.
It's a tragedy, really, because it's such a good school, | :06:27. | :06:28.
and the simple fact is, facing the problems it is facing | :06:29. | :06:34.
economically, the standards that it has upheld for so many years, | :06:35. | :06:38.
which have been excellent, are going to dip. | :06:39. | :06:40.
The Government is proposing a new way of working out | :06:41. | :06:43.
how schools are funded, and the consultation is under way. | :06:44. | :06:47.
But the headteacher here says even that won't address the shortfall | :06:48. | :07:00.
Abi Jaiyeola, BBC Look North, Penistone. | :07:01. | :07:13.
A ?6 million investment in one of Sheffield's oldest | :07:14. | :07:15.
William Cook Holdings designs and manufactures components | :07:16. | :07:17.
for blue-chip customers in the energy, defence, | :07:18. | :07:19.
Today a new factory has been officially opened, | :07:20. | :07:22.
which is home to cutting-edge technology that will help | :07:23. | :07:25.
Our business correspondent Danni Hewson reports. | :07:26. | :07:28.
Since the 1800s, this company has been steel-casting, | :07:29. | :07:29.
crafting world-class products used in trains, planes, | :07:30. | :07:31.
There have been many changes, and many challenges, | :07:32. | :07:34.
and the last couple of years are no exception. | :07:35. | :07:39.
Faced with competition from places like China, | :07:40. | :07:42.
many manufacturers have had to think hard about the future. | :07:43. | :07:46.
Many people say, why don't you just pack it in? | :07:47. | :07:51.
This is my life's work and I want it to last after I'm long gone. | :07:52. | :07:58.
I have invested to give this company a future and to give | :07:59. | :08:02.
and, if you like, to give British manufacturing a future, | :08:03. | :08:08.
So, when you reason it like that, the decision, after all, | :08:09. | :08:12.
?6 million has brought new toys, including the world's largest | :08:13. | :08:19.
Those invited to the official opening of the factory | :08:20. | :08:23.
were shown how the technology will change the business. | :08:24. | :08:27.
Guest of honour, double Olympic champion Lord Sebastien Coe, | :08:28. | :08:30.
whose father once worked at a Sheffield cutlers'. | :08:31. | :08:33.
We need more young people to want to think the manufacturing | :08:34. | :08:37.
We want more young people to become engineers, particularly women, | :08:38. | :08:42.
So this is very much a part of what I've always been | :08:43. | :08:47.
I'm not an engineer, I'm an economist by profession. | :08:48. | :08:51.
Most of the engineers in my family thought that was a bit of a copout | :08:52. | :08:55.
and wasn't really a proper job, but, having said that, this | :08:56. | :08:58.
While Lord Coe thinks back, workers here are looking forward. | :08:59. | :09:04.
200 jobs safeguarded, another chapter begun | :09:05. | :09:07.
Danni Hewson, BBC Look North, Sheffield. | :09:08. | :09:15.
Now let's take a look at the weather. | :09:16. | :09:23.
And this evening and it is now cleared away, and we are having a | :09:24. | :09:28.
fine night at the moment. Temperatures across the deals around | :09:29. | :09:32.
three Celsius. A chilly night to come with a touch of frost in | :09:33. | :09:36.
places, especially rural relief. A cool start to the day tomorrow and | :09:37. | :09:40.
cooler throughout, the breeze picking up and strong in places. | :09:41. | :09:44.
Some rain around, more especially across the hills. A bit further east | :09:45. | :09:48.
as well. A general theme of the next few days, as you can tell from the | :09:49. | :09:55.
pressure chart, and unsettled one. Not a complete wash-out, Duval way | :09:56. | :09:58.
from the hill is there will be some dry and possibly bright weather, but | :09:59. | :10:02.
a breezy start to the weekend and weather friends to content with. | :10:03. | :10:06.
Fine at the moment with temperatures low across the place, and cloud more | :10:07. | :10:12.
later but a touch of frost brulee with temperatures down to around two | :10:13. | :10:17.
or five Celsius. A cold start to the day tomorrow and generally tomorrow | :10:18. | :10:20.
a lot of cloud around, patchy rain across the deals and Pennines at | :10:21. | :10:25.
first. More persistent and it will make its way further east. Like and | :10:26. | :10:29.
patchy away from the hills and more persistent and heavy spells across | :10:30. | :10:34.
the West and up slopes, and a breezy day. A fresh to strong and gusty | :10:35. | :10:38.
south westerly breeze, and cooler than it has been as well. Midweek up | :10:39. | :10:45.
to 16 Celsius, so named Celsius with a fresh breeze it will feel quite | :10:46. | :10:51.
chilly. Looking further ahead, the weekend looks unsettled. Not a | :10:52. | :10:54.
complete wash-out but some spells of wet and windy weather. Named Celsius | :10:55. | :10:59.
Friday. Breezy to start next week. That's it from us. | :11:00. | :11:01.
there will be rain around, most occurring overnight. | :11:02. | :11:07.
Good evening, quite a range of whether an offer earlier today in | :11:08. | :11:12.
the north and north-west of the UK quite a lot of showers around, | :11:13. | :11:16.
lively ones, little bit of sunshine in between. The best of the sunshine | :11:17. | :11:19.
to be found at the other end of the country towards the south-east in | :11:20. | :11:23.
Kent, lovely picture here from one of our weather watchers. A range of | :11:24. | :11:27.
temperatures, too. 17 degrees for a few, on the other side of the | :11:28. | :11:31.
weather front, only seven or 8 degrees. Showers in the north and | :11:32. | :11:35.
west. The fresh air will win out over tonight coming in behind the | :11:36. | :11:38.
cold front, which isn't bringing much rain but it will bring some, | :11:39. | :11:42.
clearing away towards the continent, cold air following behind, as do the | :11:43. | :11:47.
showers. Wintry weather over the hills in northern Scotland. A much | :11:48. | :11:49.
colder night than it has been recently. Into single figures, touch | :11:50. | :11:56.
of frost in raw parts. Some icy patches in northern Scotland, where | :11:57. | :11:57. |
