Good evening and welcome to the late Look North. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Tornado, the Doncaster-designed locomotive, becomes the first steam | :00:00. | :00:08.
engine to hit 100 miles an hour for half a century. | :00:09. | :00:16.
Quite rocky, so swinging about a bit and standing guard groaned but it's | :00:17. | :00:24.
good fun. And North Yorkshire Police | :00:25. | :00:27.
mobilise their latest weapon And I'll bring you details of the | :00:28. | :00:38.
weather over the next few days. Join me for the live updated forecast. | :00:39. | :00:42.
First tonight, 27 men have appeared in court in Huddersfield today | :00:43. | :00:48.
charged with dozens of historical sexual offences against 18 women. | :00:49. | :00:53.
The offences include rape and trafficking of the women | :00:54. | :00:57.
Our home affairs correspondent Spencer Stokes sent | :00:58. | :01:00.
This was the first court appearance following a major | :01:01. | :01:05.
three-and-a-half-year-long police investigation in Huddersfield. | :01:06. | :01:09.
Last month 27 men were charged with historic sexual offences | :01:10. | :01:13.
and two women were charged with child neglect, all relating | :01:14. | :01:18.
to the abuse of 18 girls aged between 11 and 17 dating | :01:19. | :01:23.
The defendants arrived at Huddersfield Magistrates this | :01:24. | :01:31.
morning individually or in small groups and many faced | :01:32. | :01:35.
abuse from protesters as they entered the court building. | :01:36. | :01:40.
There was a large police presence, around 25 officers, and a couple | :01:41. | :01:44.
of hours later when they left court, more abuse was shouted at them, | :01:45. | :01:48.
so a tense atmosphere outside court as this legal process got under way. | :01:49. | :01:54.
Each of the defendants faces numerous charges including rape, | :01:55. | :01:58.
trafficking of girls, moving girls around for sexual | :01:59. | :02:00.
purposes, sexual abuse of girls and supplying | :02:01. | :02:05.
One defendant, Amere Singh Dhaliwal from Holly Road in Huddersfield, 34, | :02:06. | :02:13.
has 54 offences to answer, 21 of rape and 14 of trafficking. | :02:14. | :02:20.
29 defendants had their cases referred from this court | :02:21. | :02:25.
to Leeds Crown Court for trial and they're next scheduled | :02:26. | :02:28.
to appear in court in Leeds next month on May 11th. | :02:29. | :02:36.
Rail history has been made in Yorkshire early today with | :02:37. | :02:40.
one of Doncaster's finest designs, the Tornado, becoming the first | :02:41. | :02:42.
steam engine to hit 100 miles an hour for half a century. | :02:43. | :02:45.
In a moment we'll find out why this matters to the region's economy. | :02:46. | :02:49.
Tornado and her crew prepared for an extraordinary adventure. | :02:50. | :03:03.
since steam was last pushed to the ton on the mainline. | :03:04. | :03:08.
Under a cover of secrecy and darkness, | :03:09. | :03:10.
It had taken months to plan the experimental run. | :03:11. | :03:16.
What we want now is to assess the locomotive dynamically. | :03:17. | :03:21.
We've proven it's got the horsepower | :03:22. | :03:23.
to run at 90 miles an hour, as we've seen. | :03:24. | :03:26.
But we now want to be able to go beyond that and just give ourselves | :03:27. | :03:31.
that extra margin of safety and performance. | :03:32. | :03:35.
And that extra margin meant something very special. | :03:36. | :03:39.
Tornado is usually limited to 75 miles an hour, | :03:40. | :03:42.
like other steam engines on the mainline. | :03:43. | :03:44.
They want to be able to regularly run at 90 | :03:45. | :03:47.
and, as part of the test, they had official permission | :03:48. | :03:50.
The power that you need to do this | :03:51. | :04:06.
is quite astonishing, really, I think. | :04:07. | :04:09.
If there was any problem on the footplate, | :04:10. | :04:11.
they would have backed off as soon as they had done the ton, | :04:12. | :04:14.
and they're just cruising at the high 90s. | :04:15. | :04:16.
But with the needle all the way over, anything but quiet. | :04:17. | :04:22.
It took two men sharing the shovel to provide tonnes of coal | :04:23. | :04:25.
to satisfy Tornado's voracious appetite. | :04:26. | :04:29.
As they returned to York, the driver and fireman were cheered. | :04:30. | :04:32.
So, you know, sort of swinging about a bit | :04:33. | :04:37.
and trying to stand our ground, but it was good fun! | :04:38. | :04:41.
We've got everything from 99.9 and who knows what to 101.6. | :04:42. | :04:44.
That's the problem with doing these things | :04:45. | :04:50.
In 1968, they said the steam age was done. | :04:51. | :04:53.
Last night proved legends are still being written. | :04:54. | :05:01.
Earlier I spoke to railway historian Tim Dunn. | :05:02. | :05:02.
He said the test had three main significances. | :05:03. | :05:06.
It showed there is an appetite for this stuff, I think it shows | :05:07. | :05:09.
people up and down the country want to know what's been | :05:10. | :05:12.
going on and it's remarkable they can go that fast and it proves | :05:13. | :05:16.
this can be done, a new-build locomotive on a high-speed main line | :05:17. | :05:22.
and it shows people can come together, Network Rail | :05:23. | :05:25.
and the volunteers going above and beyond, coming together | :05:26. | :05:28.
and making something remarkable happen. | :05:29. | :05:31.
Heritage rail is a big part of tourism in our region. | :05:32. | :05:34.
What will this test mean for tourism here? | :05:35. | :05:37.
These things have an application affect so I'm expecting to see | :05:38. | :05:42.
people this weekend turning up at local railways all over the North | :05:43. | :05:46.
and in the South over Easter and visiting because this | :05:47. | :05:50.
You see one of these things rocket through, | :05:51. | :05:53.
you've got to see it for yourself, perhaps at a slightly lower pace | :05:54. | :05:56.
at a local steam railway, so everywhere from North Yorkshire | :05:57. | :05:58.
moors to Keighley, I'm sure we'll see an upturn in visitors. | :05:59. | :06:02.
Do you think steam could ever become part of the integral | :06:03. | :06:04.
I don't think they are integral to the day-in day-out working | :06:05. | :06:13.
but you saw recently a viaduct was reopened, the Flying Scotsman | :06:14. | :06:18.
has been a huge part, an icon of the railway in the past | :06:19. | :06:23.
year or so and this shows they are a wonderful thing to bring | :06:24. | :06:28.
people together and unite people around the network and show what can | :06:29. | :06:32.
be done and take joy in what can be seen as quite a mundane operational | :06:33. | :06:37.
thing, this brings a bit of joy to people. | :06:38. | :06:40.
Your enthusiasm for trains has made me want to go | :06:41. | :06:43.
Despite tougher new penalties, it seems drivers are still risking | :06:44. | :06:49.
lives by using phones and other electronic gadgets at the wheel. | :06:50. | :06:53.
Now police in North Yorkshire are taking steps to spot | :06:54. | :06:56.
Phil Bodmer was given exclusive access to the operation. | :06:57. | :07:01.
Texting, phone in the left hand, looking down. | :07:02. | :07:12.
He's looking down, he's been looking down for an age, | :07:13. | :07:17.
We are looking for you, we do want to catch you, | :07:18. | :07:22.
Uncompromising words of advice from traffic constable Dave Sievers | :07:23. | :07:30.
It's just after 10am, and Operation Tramline is under way. | :07:31. | :07:40.
On-board this unmarked truck are two police officers. | :07:41. | :07:44.
Within five minutes, a driver is seen using a phone. | :07:45. | :07:46.
Yeah, he's on the phone there, isn't he? | :07:47. | :07:49.
The vehicle is stopped by a marked police car | :07:50. | :07:51.
He said he was operating the screen of his iPhone, | :07:52. | :07:56.
He actually denied that he was texting or making a telephone call. | :07:57. | :08:02.
But the fact is he's still got his phone in his hand, he's using it. | :08:03. | :08:06.
That's going to be a distraction to him while he is driving, | :08:07. | :08:09.
So he will be dealt with for that offence. | :08:10. | :08:13.
It's just over a month since the penalty for using a mobile phone | :08:14. | :08:15.
at the wheel was increased to six point and a ?200 fine. | :08:16. | :08:18.
But, despite extensive publicity, some drivers, it seems, | :08:19. | :08:22.
People are ignoring it, and they don't realise | :08:23. | :08:26.
the consequences of what they are doing. | :08:27. | :08:30.
We are on day four now, and we are catching people | :08:31. | :08:33.
Yesterday, we had four on a mobile phone | :08:34. | :08:38.
One of the problems the police face is actually spotting drivers | :08:39. | :08:44.
or using electronic devices behind the wheel. | :08:45. | :08:47.
What the truck does is give them the elevation | :08:48. | :08:49.
to see exactly what the motorists are up to. | :08:50. | :08:53.
A short time later, the truck spots another motorist flouting the law. | :08:54. | :08:58.
A white transporter, to the near side of us. | :08:59. | :09:03.
None of the drivers stopped while we filmed | :09:04. | :09:08.
Police say six points and the ?200 fine reflects | :09:09. | :09:13.
If it saves a life, that's a small price to pay. | :09:14. | :09:23.
And we have one Super League result for you tonight - | :09:24. | :09:25.
Huddersfield Giants lost to Catalans Dragons 22-29. | :09:26. | :09:34.
That's it from me. Paul is here now with the weather. How is looking | :09:35. | :09:40.
on Sunday. Here is Tomasz. Good evening. | :09:41. | :11:10.
The weather in the run-up to Christmas... Easter! I got ahead of | :11:11. | :11:18.
myself there! It isn't looking especially great, nor is it looking | :11:19. | :11:25.
all that sunny. It will be changeable, it's been changeable | :11:26. | :11:28.
today. You can see cloud streaming out of the north-west of the | :11:29. | :11:33.
country. You can see some showers getting into north western parts of | :11:34. | :11:39.
the UK, but eastern areas will remain pretty clear tonight, so here | :11:40. | :11:42.
we have some frost on the way first thing, ground frost, nothing more, | :11:43. | :11:46.
and it will be gone by the time the sun is up. First thing in the | :11:47. | :11:52.
morning, some sunshine around across one or two parts of the east here. | :11:53. | :11:57.
Western areas probably a little bit more cloudy, maybe showers getting | :11:58. | :12:02.
into north western areas of England, maybe | :12:03. | :12:03. |
