Good evening and welcome to the late Look North. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Rail unions announce strike action on one of Yorkshire's busiest | :00:00. | :00:07.
weekends when we host the Tour De Yorkshire. | :00:08. | :00:10.
And a new chapter for Bretton Hall - the West Yorkshire drama college | :00:11. | :00:13.
And the Easter weekend is nearly upon us, a full forecast shortly. | :00:14. | :00:30.
Rail passengers are being warned of potential disruption on one | :00:31. | :00:32.
Members of the RMT union working for Virgin East Coast will walk out | :00:33. | :00:37.
for 48 hours on the 28th and 29th of April. | :00:38. | :00:41.
The same days as the Tour De Yorkshire. | :00:42. | :00:43.
Meanwhile, staff at Arriva Rail North are to hold a 24-hour strike | :00:44. | :00:46.
on 28th April in a row about driver-only trains. | :00:47. | :00:48.
The East Coast Main Line is Britain's flagship | :00:49. | :01:00.
railway, carrying thousands of people every day. | :01:01. | :01:02.
The planned walk-out by members of the RMT working | :01:03. | :01:04.
for Virgin Trains East Coast is part of an ongoing row about the role | :01:05. | :01:08.
The dispute follows changes introduced by Virgin last month, | :01:09. | :01:14.
meaning a single person takes over responsibility for customer | :01:15. | :01:17.
In other words, a train manager supported by a team. | :01:18. | :01:24.
The RMT claims safety is being compromised and that Virgin | :01:25. | :01:28.
has implemented the changes without formal agreement. | :01:29. | :01:30.
The union says striking is a last resort. | :01:31. | :01:33.
If we were to strike on a Monday to Thursday, | :01:34. | :01:36.
we would be accused of hitting the regular commuter. | :01:37. | :01:38.
There is never a good time to strike, we do not want to strike, | :01:39. | :01:41.
our members lose money, but both ourselves and | :01:42. | :01:43.
the travelling public know that this strike is all about their safety | :01:44. | :01:46.
Virgin Trains has said it plans to run a near-normal timetable | :01:47. | :01:50.
during the strike and claims the changes will have | :01:51. | :01:53.
The company has also assured the union there will be no | :01:54. | :01:58.
But with the strike due to take place on the weekend | :01:59. | :02:03.
of the Tour De Yorkshire, what sort of impact is it likely | :02:04. | :02:07.
It definitely will make a difference because, like, | :02:08. | :02:11.
during the holidays like yesterday, we took the grandson to York. | :02:12. | :02:16.
It is just a busy time of month, everyone is around here. | :02:17. | :02:22.
People love cycling, everyone is always out | :02:23. | :02:25.
and about at weekends, it is just going to | :02:26. | :02:27.
Will the strike have any affect on you? | :02:28. | :02:30.
But it comes on the weekend of the Tour De Yorkshire, | :02:31. | :02:35.
do you think that will inconvenience people? | :02:36. | :02:37.
Because I live in Leeds, so it will be big time. | :02:38. | :02:41.
Welcome To Yorkshire has said that the advice is to plan ahead. | :02:42. | :02:44.
Ironically, today it announced Virgin Trains as one | :02:45. | :02:46.
RMT members working for Arriva North have said that they also will be | :02:47. | :02:50.
taking industrial action on the 28th of April in a row over proposals | :02:51. | :02:54.
It follows similar action by members of the Rail Maritime and Transport | :02:55. | :03:01.
union in a long-running dispute with Southern Railway. | :03:02. | :03:03.
Next tonight, how effective are traditional fixed | :03:04. | :03:15.
According to the Chief Constable of North Yorkshire Police - not very. | :03:16. | :03:22.
His comments come as the force invests in a fleet of mobile safety | :03:23. | :03:25.
camera vans that will catch people speeding through rural villages. | :03:26. | :03:29.
In West Yorkshire the highly visible fixed cameras occupy 144 locations. | :03:30. | :03:32.
In South Yorkshire there are 46 fixed cameras. | :03:33. | :03:36.
North Yorkshire is the only force in Yorkshire without any, | :03:37. | :03:40.
but mobile vans can be despatched to 213 locations across the county. | :03:41. | :03:44.
Here's our home affairs correspondent, Spencer Stokes. | :03:45. | :03:51.
A quiet street on the edge of Harrogate, and today's chosen | :03:52. | :03:54.
spot to catch speeding motorists from new, smaller vans. | :03:55. | :03:58.
The police are here because of pressure from residents, | :03:59. | :04:01.
who say drivers are regularly breaking the 30 mph limit. | :04:02. | :04:06.
After minutes of arriving, local concerns are confirmed. | :04:07. | :04:11.
The driver will receive a ?100 fine and three penalty points. | :04:12. | :04:20.
Or the option of going on a speed awareness course. | :04:21. | :04:22.
You have to think where we are currently at the moment, | :04:23. | :04:25.
we are outside a park, we've got a school down the road, | :04:26. | :04:28.
Lots of houses, easy for children to come out of those houses | :04:29. | :04:32.
Time for everyone to start slowing down and hopefully we'll achieve | :04:33. | :04:36.
Six of the new agile safety vans will now join North Yorkshire's | :04:37. | :04:40.
fleet of larger mobile camera vans, so there will be a total | :04:41. | :04:43.
of 12 vehicles patrolling the county's network of roads. | :04:44. | :04:46.
Traditionally, North Yorkshire Police's safety cameras have been | :04:47. | :04:50.
on the county's main A roads, catching motorists | :04:51. | :04:53.
This is about changing the focus to suburban | :04:54. | :04:59.
areas and rural villages, where motorists might not expect | :05:00. | :05:03.
to see a police officer and a safety camera. | :05:04. | :05:09.
It's seven years since the first mobile cameras were introduced | :05:10. | :05:11.
in North Yorkshire, and the number of people killed or injured | :05:12. | :05:14.
on the county's roads has fallen from 478 in 2010 to 371 in 2015. | :05:15. | :05:22.
And what makes North Yorkshire unique is the lack of fixed cameras | :05:23. | :05:26.
that have become a common sight across the rest of the country. | :05:27. | :05:30.
That's something that is not likely to change soon, | :05:31. | :05:32.
Fixed cameras are not as effective as people may think. | :05:33. | :05:38.
People change their behaviour 15 seconds before, | :05:39. | :05:41.
This way of deploying mobile vans means we are in a position | :05:42. | :05:45.
to constantly make sure people are alive to the speed | :05:46. | :05:48.
they are going, how they are behaving on the roads. | :05:49. | :05:51.
I know, evidentially, this is saving lives. | :05:52. | :05:52.
And the fact we are deploying it and other people aren't, | :05:53. | :05:55.
I'm determined we keep the people of North Yorkshire safe. | :05:56. | :06:00.
The van is small, but the camera can see 800 metres down the road, | :06:01. | :06:04.
making these mobile units a very useful safety tool on North | :06:05. | :06:07.
Spencer Stokes, BBC Look North, Harrogate. | :06:08. | :06:16.
A bus driver who knocked down and killed a teenage girl | :06:17. | :06:19.
in Sheffield and seriously injured her boyfriend has been | :06:20. | :06:21.
Summer Seymour, who was 15, and 17-year-old Jake Ford, | :06:22. | :06:27.
were run over as they crossed Haymarket in 2015. | :06:28. | :06:31.
Driver Paul Brown, who's 51 and from Fir Vale, | :06:32. | :06:34.
pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. | :06:35. | :06:42.
Football, and in the Championship, Barnsley have lost to Wigan 3-2. | :06:43. | :06:44.
The Tykes were 2-0 up until the 71st minute when the Latics fought back. | :06:45. | :06:47.
It leaves Barnsley 13th in the table. | :06:48. | :06:53.
For over 60 years it was a hub of creativity, | :06:54. | :06:56.
attracting generations of artists and performers. | :06:57. | :06:58.
And in that time Bretton Hall College produced | :06:59. | :07:02.
some well-loved stars, including screenwriter Kay Mellor, | :07:03. | :07:05.
playwright John Godber and the actors Mark Gatiss, | :07:06. | :07:08.
Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton. | :07:09. | :07:13.
But the campus closed in 2007 and today the last | :07:14. | :07:15.
of the accommodation blocks were demolished to make | :07:16. | :07:18.
They were home to some drama students who have | :07:19. | :07:29.
since become household names, but now these '70s accommodation | :07:30. | :07:32.
As they are cleared, the splendour of Bretton Hall | :07:33. | :07:37.
The Grade-II listed mansion, built in 1720, stands | :07:38. | :07:42.
in the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and it is now to become | :07:43. | :07:46.
a hotel, the latest phase in its rich history. | :07:47. | :07:49.
We've got lots of great attractions in Wakefield | :07:50. | :07:52.
but not enough hotel space, so I think it is probably the best | :07:53. | :07:55.
location in the country, actually, for a new hotel and this will be | :07:56. | :07:59.
There's some wonderful listed buildings here, not just the hall, | :08:00. | :08:03.
But there are perhaps some less appealing structures on the site | :08:04. | :08:08.
and they block out this vista that we have not seen for many | :08:09. | :08:12.
years, which is from the east side of the mansion. | :08:13. | :08:14.
The buildings have all been empty for ten years since the closure | :08:15. | :08:17.
Former students, including TV dramatist Kay Mellor, | :08:18. | :08:24.
It was a special place and dearly loved. | :08:25. | :08:29.
David Newland spent five happy and creative years here. | :08:30. | :08:33.
For me, it is my sense of coming home. | :08:34. | :08:35.
We have a word in Welsh called "hiraeth", which is a wistful kind | :08:36. | :08:38.
of longing for homeland and my hiraeth, although I am | :08:39. | :08:41.
very happy where I am, is when I come back to Bretton Hall. | :08:42. | :08:44.
My other half cannot understand it at all, | :08:45. | :08:47.
but there is just something magical here that kind of draws you back. | :08:48. | :08:50.
David and other alumni are already planning to return once the grand | :08:51. | :08:53.
In college days, this room was the principal's office | :08:54. | :09:02.
and students only got to see it if they were in trouble, | :09:03. | :09:05.
but the developers see this as an ideal spot for a wedding. | :09:06. | :09:08.
The developers are keen to respect both the setting and the history | :09:09. | :09:16.
They hope to open by Christmas next year. | :09:17. | :09:19.
Cathy Killick, BBC Look North, Wakefield. | :09:20. | :09:32.
You cannot beat those beautiful views on a beautiful Easter weekend. | :09:33. | :09:40.
Time for a check on the weather. Whenever there is an extended | :09:41. | :09:43.
weekend like this coming up I always feel more pressure on the weather | :09:44. | :09:46.
forecaster. It is not looking too bad. It is a settled story over the | :09:47. | :09:52.
next couple of days, more on that shortly. Tomorrow it will be cloudy | :09:53. | :09:56.
and, yes, there are outbreaks of rain in the forecast but I would | :09:57. | :10:00.
stress, not all of us will see this. We start to see the rain moving from | :10:01. | :10:05.
the West overnight, name following on high ground on the Pennines, for | :10:06. | :10:08.
example, as it moves over this high ground. But it will fizzle out so we | :10:09. | :10:12.
will see some showers reaching further towards the East but this | :10:13. | :10:17.
will be lighter. Those tonight of seven, eight Celsius. Not | :10:18. | :10:20.
desperately cold. Good Friday looks like this first thing, cloudy, here | :10:21. | :10:26.
comes that rain again, coming in from the rest, quite persistent, and | :10:27. | :10:29.
this pipeline of thick cloud and rain is courtesy of a weather front, | :10:30. | :10:35.
highs of 11 or 12 Celsius tomorrow, quite breezy as not blustery at | :10:36. | :10:38.
times. The best of the brightness across the North and East of | :10:39. | :10:43.
Yorkshire. As for the weekend, Saturday will be the better day, | :10:44. | :10:46.
pretty cold and high pressure keeps things settled. Pulling in cold air | :10:47. | :10:51.
from the North, you might catch the odd shower. Sunday is more cloudy | :10:52. | :10:55.
with some rain and Monday is looking settled as well. That is everything | :10:56. | :10:58.
from myself and Amy tonight. I We will keep you updated. Now with | :10:59. | :11:04.
the National Outlook, Tomasz Schafernaker. | :11:05. | :11:09.
Good evening. It's not exactly cracking whether this Easter. I | :11:10. | :11:15.
think the main message is there's going to be a lot of dry weather, | :11:16. | :11:20.
just a little bit of rain from time to time. Not so bad overall across | :11:21. | :11:24.
most of the UK, wherever you are | :11:25. | :11:25. |
