Good evening and welcome to the late Look North.

:00:00.:00:00.

Yorkshire prepares for a general election -

:00:00.:00:08.

we'll have reaction to today's announcement by Theresa May.

:00:09.:00:12.

And six drug deaths in South and West Yorkshire over Easter -

:00:13.:00:16.

And there was some lovely, sparkling sunshine and offer across Yorkshire

:00:17.:00:30.

today. But how's tomorrow looking? Full forecast shortly.

:00:31.:00:35.

In just over seven weeks, we'll go to the polls

:00:36.:00:38.

for another general election - and once again, Yorkshire is

:00:39.:00:40.

The Prime Minister says she wants to strengthen her position ahead

:00:41.:00:46.

of talks about Britain leaving the European Union.

:00:47.:00:49.

Parliament still has to approve the plan,

:00:50.:00:51.

which has been welcomed by opposition parties.

:00:52.:00:53.

Our data journalist David Rhodes looks at the state of play

:00:54.:00:57.

Politically, we can break our region down into three distinct blocks.

:00:58.:01:02.

In North Yorkshire, the Conservatives are dominant.

:01:03.:01:05.

They hold seven out of the eight seats.

:01:06.:01:08.

Labour's only seat is in York Central.

:01:09.:01:10.

And given the strong pro-EU vote during the Brexit referendum,

:01:11.:01:14.

the Liberal Democrats may look to target this seat.

:01:15.:01:18.

They'll probably have an eye on Harrogate as well.

:01:19.:01:20.

A constituency that the Lib Dems have held in the past.

:01:21.:01:24.

Now, let's move to South Yorkshire and the North Midlands.

:01:25.:01:27.

Out of 18 seats, Labour holds 17, while Nick Clegg, the former

:01:28.:01:32.

Deputy Prime Minister, holds one for the Liberal Democrats,

:01:33.:01:36.

However, in 2015, UKIP came second in ten of the seats

:01:37.:01:45.

Post-Brexit, can Ukip this time go one better.

:01:46.:01:48.

And let's not forget the Green Party - they came second

:01:49.:01:51.

in Sheffield Central last time and the former leader of the Greens,

:01:52.:01:54.

Natalie Bennett, has already said she will be contesting this seat.

:01:55.:01:57.

But it is in West Yorkshire where we find the key

:01:58.:02:00.

Here there are 22 seats, 14 are held by Labour, seven

:02:01.:02:06.

by the Conservatives and there is one Lib Dem.

:02:07.:02:09.

Last time in Bradford East, Dewsbury and Morley and outward -

:02:10.:02:12.

all the seats changed hands between the main parties.

:02:13.:02:16.

One of the most high-profile moments came in Morley,

:02:17.:02:20.

when Labour Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls lost his seat

:02:21.:02:23.

These are the ten most marginal constituencies in Yorkshire.

:02:24.:02:30.

And with it looking like there'll be maybe seven weeks

:02:31.:02:36.

this is where we should see the main political parties

:02:37.:02:40.

These seats could also, potentially, have the biggest impact

:02:41.:02:47.

We've been asking voters in one of those most marginal seats -

:02:48.:02:53.

Dewsbury - for their reaction to today's announcement.

:02:54.:02:57.

I do think it's needed to have a clearer mandate in order

:02:58.:03:02.

Conservatives, they didn't do anything for the working class.

:03:03.:03:14.

And I think if there was a party that was campaigning to either stop

:03:15.:03:20.

the process or to come out of Brexit, I think that

:03:21.:03:23.

would certainly be the party I would vote for.

:03:24.:03:26.

It's the first general election since I turned 18,

:03:27.:03:30.

and a lot of my friends are raelly excited to vote.

:03:31.:03:32.

But I have no idea which way I'm going to vote, so I'm going to have

:03:33.:03:36.

Meanwhile, Yorkshire MPs have been reacting to the news

:03:37.:03:40.

Brexit is going to be a major part of this election,

:03:41.:03:44.

We have got some serious negotiations to happen.

:03:45.:03:49.

But this is also about electing a Government

:03:50.:03:51.

And yes, we've got to talk about the economy and how

:03:52.:03:56.

we keep on making that a stable and growing economy and how

:03:57.:03:59.

that works for ordinary, working families in Yorkshire

:04:00.:04:00.

This is also an opportunity for people in Leeds and Yorkshire

:04:01.:04:05.

to send a message from our area, down here to Westminster,

:04:06.:04:08.

that they've been treated badly by this Government.

:04:09.:04:12.

They've been taken for granted by this Government, and Labour can

:04:13.:04:14.

offer a better future for the majority of lower

:04:15.:04:17.

Our political reporter James Vincent joins us now live from Sheffield.

:04:18.:04:23.

James, we've got some big-name politicians in Yorkshire -

:04:24.:04:26.

what do we know so far about who's standing for re-election

:04:27.:04:29.

It has been a furious day of uncles, journalists wanting to know who is

:04:30.:04:45.

and isn't standing. Some of the stalwarts were known, Greg

:04:46.:04:50.

Mulholland you heard from there, one of the two Liberal Democrats. Hilary

:04:51.:04:54.

Benn said he would stand again to be a Leeds MP.

:04:55.:04:57.

Andrea Jenkins, and your MP, she is responsible for Ed Balls losing his

:04:58.:05:04.

job. ASBO she is responsible for him being on Strictly Come Dancing as

:05:05.:05:10.

well. But who is not standing two we have not heard anything from Ed

:05:11.:05:14.

Miliband, is he going to stand again? And we're hearing Nick Clegg

:05:15.:05:19.

is meeting with his party in the next few hours to decide what he

:05:20.:05:23.

wants to do. Is he going to decide he wants another five years of being

:05:24.:05:27.

Sheffield Hallam MP to get selected? Or is he going to say I've had seven

:05:28.:05:32.

years been in the spotlight, I want to do something else. There are big

:05:33.:05:36.

moment. moment.

:05:37.:05:42.

Have important you think Yorkshire is going to be in the selection?

:05:43.:05:48.

Really important. If we had the personality is the last time, like

:05:49.:05:51.

people like Ed Miliband and make lab, we have the places this time.

:05:52.:05:58.

-- and Nick Clegg. We've got the ones that given the polls and the

:05:59.:06:01.

amount of support the Conservatives seem to have, we have places like

:06:02.:06:06.

York, Aniston and Stocksbridge that may become, because of the polling,

:06:07.:06:11.

become modules themselves. There will be some interesting fights to

:06:12.:06:16.

be had. -- become marginals themselves.

:06:17.:06:18.

And will thus become a Brexit election?

:06:19.:06:24.

It will be very interesting and very quickly to see where the parties

:06:25.:06:27.

placed themselves. To see what Ukip think about the referendum. The way

:06:28.:06:33.

that the Tories and the Labour Party is frame their policies around exit

:06:34.:06:39.

and how they pitch it to voters will be very interesting. And how the

:06:40.:06:42.

bounds sending of that Brexit policy news with the other stuff that we

:06:43.:06:48.

normally expect to see. It will be very interesting indeed.

:06:49.:06:49.

Thank you much. Police have issued a warning to drug

:06:50.:06:51.

users in South and West Yorkshire to use caution following six deaths

:06:52.:06:54.

over the Easter weekend. Detectives haven't officially

:06:55.:06:56.

linked the deaths, but say they are considering

and make it go further. Two people arrested

on suspicion of child abduction. Controversial plans to build

:08:56.:08:59.

a new school on a former landfill site in Sheffield have been given

:09:00.:09:02.

the go-ahead by councillors. The council says the three-storey

:09:03.:09:04.

building is needed in Millhouses because demand for school places

:09:05.:09:07.

in southwest Sheffield is growing. Objectors say building on landfill

:09:08.:09:11.

could be dangerous and that local roads would struggle to cope

:09:12.:09:15.

with increased traffic. Time to check out the weather with

:09:16.:09:28.

Owain. Thanks very much, safe to say it was

:09:29.:09:34.

a lovely day in Yorkshire. Wherever you work, you saw some blue skies.

:09:35.:09:39.

Doncaster looking good first thing this morning. A little later on

:09:40.:09:44.

there a couple of clouds around. The cloud tended to build, if we switch

:09:45.:09:51.

over to the satellite image. You can see the clouds increases throughout

:09:52.:09:56.

the day. We do tend to continue with that trend tonight. It will be

:09:57.:10:01.

chilly, mostly dry, maybe some drizzle and light rain across

:10:02.:10:07.

northern and western parts. Lows in towns of five Celsius. We could see

:10:08.:10:12.

some frost tomorrow morning. In parts of South Yorkshire, heading

:10:13.:10:15.

towards the north and east, it's a good start. Bright sunshine getting

:10:16.:10:20.

cloudier from the Norse. Again, the odd spot of drivel -- spot of

:10:21.:10:26.

drizzle. A light breeze. High-pressure still in charge. We

:10:27.:10:35.

will see a settled night. Still cloudy, low cloud and mist perhaps

:10:36.:10:39.

on the Pennines. Just the odd chance of drizzle. There is a high

:10:40.:10:45.

pressure, you can see this front here, getting towards us towards the

:10:46.:10:50.

end of the week. We can do is about breaks of rain with it, but light

:10:51.:10:56.

and patchy generally speaking. If you like the dry weather, good news,

:10:57.:11:00.

not so much if you want rain for your gardens. A settled story, but

:11:01.:11:02.

cloudy.
