Good evening. stay with us on BBC One,

0:00:070:00:08

Wentworth Castle Gardens, near Barnsley, has closed

0:00:080:00:10

to the public today.

0:00:100:00:13

The Grade I listed stately home and gardens attracts

0:00:130:00:15

tens of thousands of people a year.

0:00:150:00:17

But the Wentworth Castle and Stainborough Park Heritage Trust -

0:00:170:00:19

which runs the site - says it can no longer

0:00:190:00:22

afford to keep it open.

0:00:220:00:26

Alasdair Gill reports.

CHEERING

0:00:270:00:29

The Easter holidays have always been a popular time

0:00:290:00:31

for a trip to Wentworth Castle Gardens.

0:00:310:00:34

A host of children's activities keeps visitors

0:00:340:00:36

rolling in year after year.

0:00:360:00:39

But today was the last.

0:00:390:00:41

Wentworth Castle Gardens is now closed.

0:00:410:00:44

The problem here is one of money.

0:00:440:00:47

Since this place opened ten years ago, some 500,000 people have

0:00:470:00:50

been through its gates.

0:00:500:00:53

But the trust that runs Wentworth Castle Gardens

0:00:530:00:54

says its income just isn't enough to cover the running costs.

0:00:540:00:58

Of course, without public support and public money,

0:00:580:01:01

much of Wentworth wouldn't look this good.

0:01:010:01:04

The Victorian conservatory was featured on BBC Two's Restoration

0:01:040:01:07

programme, and was resotred at a cost of ?4 million in 2013.

0:01:070:01:14

Lottery funding and other grants paid for it, along with donations

0:01:140:01:16

from members of the public, who will now lose access to it.

0:01:160:01:21

If it's out of money that was given, what a place to close down.

0:01:210:01:26

It's a shame, it's horrible.

0:01:260:01:28

In't it, Fred?

0:01:280:01:29

Some lovely grounds and everything, it just doesn't seem right.

0:01:290:01:32

It's a shame, in't it?

0:01:320:01:35

They just seemed to have got everything finished.

0:01:350:01:38

It should be in its heyday now, shouldn't it?

0:01:380:01:40

Not closing down.

0:01:400:01:42

They call Wentworth the lost garden of South Yorkshire.

0:01:420:01:45

Now, after ?20 million of restoration and ten years

0:01:450:01:49

of visitors, it's being lost to view once more.

0:01:490:01:53

Police are continuing their investigations into six deaths

0:01:570:02:00

in Yorkshire over the weekend thought to be linked to drugs.

0:02:000:02:03

In West Yorkshire, a 36-year-old man from Leeds and a 27-year-old man

0:02:030:02:07

from Normanton died on Saturday.

0:02:070:02:09

Four people are in custody.

0:02:090:02:11

In South Yorkshire, two people who were arrested after four

0:02:110:02:13

deaths have been released pending further enquiries.

0:02:130:02:18

The remains of a medieval priest who died 700 years ago

0:02:180:02:21

has been uncovered at the site of a 14th-century

0:02:210:02:23

monastery hospital in Linconshire.

0:02:230:02:25

Archaeologists from the University of Sheffield found the skeletal

0:02:250:02:28

remains at Thornton Abbey.

0:02:280:02:33

Shirley Henry reports.

0:02:330:02:34

Thornton Abbey, a 14th century monastery in rural Lincolnshire.

0:02:370:02:40

With hidden secrets.

0:02:400:02:42

For the last six years, archaeologists from the

0:02:420:02:45

University of Sheffield have been slowly unveiling its past.

0:02:450:02:49

Most recently, the remains of a medieval priest.

0:02:490:02:52

He died 700 years ago.

0:02:520:02:56

His name was Richard de Wispeton.

0:02:560:03:00

It was incredible to actually find a named person.

0:03:000:03:03

Because, as archaeologists, we find skeletal remains quite often.

0:03:030:03:08

But to actually find someone whose name you know and the date of when

0:03:080:03:12

they died and their position within society is very rare.

0:03:120:03:20

Richard would have been highly regarded in medieval society,

0:03:200:03:24

but his life was far from perfect.

0:03:240:03:27

A slight dent in his skull shows he suffered a violent truama.

0:03:270:03:31

And marks on his teeth reveal a period of stress or malnutrition.

0:03:310:03:36

It's thought he died during the great famine.

0:03:360:03:39

He was aged about 35.

0:03:400:03:42

It's important, because it gives us a little snapshot of the past

0:03:420:03:45

we wouldn't ordinarily have.

0:03:450:03:47

As archaeologists, the past is normally nameless and faceless.

0:03:470:03:51

Here, we have a named individual, we can find out about their lives,

0:03:510:03:56

it puts a bit of a human face on a century that's a long time ago.

0:03:560:04:02

This find is part of a bigger project.

0:04:020:04:05

Last year, 48 skeletons, many of them children,

0:04:050:04:08

were found at the same site.

0:04:080:04:12

When the research is complete, Richard's remains will be laid

0:04:120:04:15

to rest at a church in Barton-upon-Humber.

0:04:150:04:20

In football, there's one result from tonight.

0:04:240:04:26

It was a draw for Huddersfield away at Derby, both sides

0:04:260:04:28

scoring one goal each.

0:04:280:04:31

The football results from games played earlier in the day

0:04:310:04:33

are on the BBC Sport website, and for action from this weekend's

0:04:330:04:36

rugby league you can tune into the Superleague Show with Tanya

0:04:360:04:39

on BBC One at 11:50 tonight.

0:04:390:04:45

A look at Yorkshire's weather now with Jen Bartram.

0:04:450:04:48

Hello there, good evening.

0:04:480:04:50

Quite a chilly night to come tonight.

0:04:500:04:51

These showers will gradually sink southwards, leaving clear skies.

0:04:510:04:56

Under those skies, we expect a frost to develop.

0:04:560:05:00

These are the temperatures you can expect in towns and cities.

0:05:000:05:03

In rural spots, it could get down to -4 Celsius,

0:05:030:05:07

so gardeners take note.

0:05:070:05:11

A chilly start to Tuesday morning, but a dry and bright start.

0:05:110:05:14

Plenty sunshine first thing, but high cloud rolls

0:05:140:05:19

and from the West later on, turning that sunshine a little hazy.

0:05:190:05:23

Temperatures tomorrow feeling very much like today,

0:05:230:05:25

highs of 11 degrees, and a light, northeasterly breeze.

0:05:250:05:31

Through the rest of the week, plenty of cloud in the forecast,

0:05:310:05:34

turning a little milder by the time we get to Thursday.

0:05:340:05:38

That's all for now, we'll be back with your first Breakfast bulletin

0:05:380:05:42

tomorrow at just before 6:30am.

0:05:420:05:45

Have a very good evening.
