Good evening. for the news where you are.

The first of a series of community information events about HS2 -

the proposed high-speed rail line between West Yorkshire

The event was in Rothwell, near Leeds, for people who'll be

affected by living along the planned route.

Today was a chance for the people of Rockwell and the surrounding area

to put their concerns about HS2 to the people responsible

for delivering it and they didn't hold back.

Well, they will have to do better than that.

Because the significant weight of that tunnel mouth

The original plan for the area was for the line to Leeds to run

north of the village along the River Aire on a viaduct.

At a consultation, that has now been partially shelved in favour

of a 1km-long tunnel beneath Woodlesford.

The people we spoke to at today's meeting say that will

The fact that the area cannot support a traffic jam at the moment

means we are going to be affected hugely by the logistical

impacts of planning, preparation and everything.

Not to mention the fact that they will be tunnelling

hyperbarically, so at pressure, underneath our town.

Is going to take years, 10, 15 years, never mind the initial

construction which is going to take at least 6.

It is a decimation of this community for 20 years,

People obviously are concerned to know what the impact

will be around properties, around the highways and visually.

So we've got lots of information here to share with them.

We've got a sound booth that people can go and listen

to what a high-speed train sounds like.

So there is lots of really good information that

hopefully will inform them about what we're doing.

HS2 will hold more of these events in Yorkshire in the coming weeks.

The hope - to enable concerned members of the public to make

an informed contribution to the public consultations on HS2
