The first of a series of community information events about HS2 -
the proposed high-speed rail line between West Yorkshire
The event was in Rothwell, near Leeds, for people who'll be
affected by living along the planned route.
Today was a chance for the people of Rockwell and the surrounding area
to put their concerns about HS2 to the people responsible
for delivering it and they didn't hold back.
Well, they will have to do better than that.
Because the significant weight of that tunnel mouth
The original plan for the area was for the line to Leeds to run
north of the village along the River Aire on a viaduct.
At a consultation, that has now been partially shelved in favour
of a 1km-long tunnel beneath Woodlesford.

The fact that the area cannot support a traffic jam at the moment
means we are going to be affected hugely by the logistical
impacts of planning, preparation and everything.
Not to mention the fact that they will be tunnelling
hyperbarically, so at pressure, underneath our town.

construction which is going to take at least 6.
It is a decimation of this community for 20 years,
People obviously are concerned to know what the impact
will be around properties, around the highways and visually.

hopefully will inform them about what we're doing.
HS2 will hold more of these events in Yorkshire in the coming weeks.

an informed contribution to the public consultations on HS2
A teenager has appeared in court in Sheffield
charged with the murder of 16-year-old Leonne Weeks.
Her body was found on a path in Dinnington,
18-year-old Shea Peter Heeley appeared at Sheffield Magistrates
