Police have arrested seven people in Birmingham, | :00:00. | :00:09.
following yesterday's terror attack in Westminster - | :00:10. | :00:12.
The arrests followed searches at three properties in Birmingham. | :00:13. | :00:18.
Police have identified the attacker as 52-year-old Khalid Masood, | :00:19. | :00:21.
they believe he'd been living here in the West Midlands. | :00:22. | :00:23.
Elizabeth Glinka is outside the property in Hagley Road | :00:24. | :00:26.
which has been the subject of a police search | :00:27. | :00:28.
for most of the day. Elizabeth, what's the latest? | :00:29. | :00:36.
tape has now gone. The police pulled tape has now gone. The police pulled | :00:37. | :00:42.
out of this property a short time ago. Men on the ground floor flat | :00:43. | :00:48.
were making their way back into the building. Police were here from late | :00:49. | :00:52.
last night searching all day, this is one of three properties in | :00:53. | :00:55.
Birmingham where raids took place and as a result, we now know seven | :00:56. | :00:57.
people were arrested. Let me give you a rundown | :00:58. | :01:03.
of what we know about the Birmingham arrests - | :01:04. | :01:06.
a 21-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man | :01:07. | :01:08.
were arrested at one address. A 26-year-old woman and three men | :01:09. | :01:11.
aged 28, 27 and 26 years old were arrested at a separate | :01:12. | :01:13.
address in Birmingham. And a 58-year-old man from another | :01:14. | :01:16.
property is also being detained. All were arrested on suspicion | :01:17. | :01:18.
of preparing for acts of terrorism. We're told the operation involves | :01:19. | :01:21.
hundreds of officers We now know that we believe the name | :01:22. | :01:31.
Khalid Masood is in fact a false name. | :01:32. | :01:32.
My colleague Giles Latcham was was following events as they unfolded. | :01:33. | :01:36.
In Winson Green, west of Birmingham city centre, | :01:37. | :01:39.
police search a former home of Khalid Masood, the man | :01:40. | :01:42.
they believe carried out yesterday's attack at Westminster. | :01:43. | :01:45.
My partner talked to him just once but it was just, how are you? | :01:46. | :01:48.
No other conversation. He was a very calm person. | :01:49. | :01:54.
Barely a mile away, the shutters came down at the premises | :01:55. | :01:58.
where the 4x4 car driven at speed across Westminster Bridge | :01:59. | :02:01.
An armed police officer was standing right there. | :02:02. | :02:07.
On the Hagley Road, this man, who didn't want to be identified, | :02:08. | :02:11.
looked on last night as police officers carrying automatic weapons | :02:12. | :02:14.
I didn't think it'd hit so close to home. | :02:15. | :02:20.
I am really shocked and concerned all this has happened. | :02:21. | :02:23.
So what do we know about Khalid Masood? | :02:24. | :02:30.
Born in Kent, he'd lived most recently in the West Midlands. | :02:31. | :02:33.
He had previous convictions for assault and possession | :02:34. | :02:36.
But significantly no terrorism offences. | :02:37. | :02:41.
Police are doing their job and if we let them do their job, | :02:42. | :02:44.
they can do a better job to make us all feel safe. | :02:45. | :02:47.
On the Hagley Road, a restaurant owner, who rented out | :02:48. | :02:50.
the flat raided by police, read a statement, | :02:51. | :02:53.
Like Londoners, it is business as usual for us in Birmingham. | :02:54. | :02:59.
And I shall be opening my restaurant as usual. | :03:00. | :03:02.
United we shall stand against such evil people carrying out | :03:03. | :03:06.
From the authorities too, a call for unity. | :03:07. | :03:12.
The people perpetrating these sort of things are a tiny minority. | :03:13. | :03:15.
And what we mustn't do is allow that small minority who are trying | :03:16. | :03:19.
to undermine our democracy, people trying to undermine | :03:20. | :03:23.
the peaceful way of life that we have, we are not | :03:24. | :03:26.
going to let them do it by forcing us apart. | :03:27. | :03:30.
For others, today was a day of reflection, reflecting | :03:31. | :03:32.
on the moment they saw terror up close. | :03:33. | :03:36.
Jayne Wilkinson from Sutton Coldfield was sightseeing | :03:37. | :03:39.
I saw a man running along with a very large knife, | :03:40. | :03:45.
not your standard flick knife that you pop in your pocket, | :03:46. | :03:49.
this was a big, almost kitchen-sized knife, | :03:50. | :03:51.
running towards the police officers behind the barriers. | :03:52. | :03:54.
That is when we heard the three shots as he disappeared. | :03:55. | :03:59.
This fast-moving inquiry is being led by the Metropolitan Police. | :04:00. | :04:02.
The attack was on our capital but an attack it now seems likely | :04:03. | :04:05.
that was conceived and planned in the second city. | :04:06. | :04:11.
People woke up to the news that police raids had taken | :04:12. | :04:21.
Our Special correspondent, Peter Wilson has been assessing | :04:22. | :04:27.
the reaction of communities and watched as the police | :04:28. | :04:30.
mounted high visibility patrols on our streets. | :04:31. | :04:32.
Birmingham's Council House, the city's flag at half-mast. | :04:33. | :04:35.
New Street Station, extra police officers to greet those | :04:36. | :04:38.
In the shadow of the Rotunda, officers in 4x4 vehicles, others | :04:39. | :04:43.
There is a lot of police around from earlier this morning. | :04:44. | :04:52.
The police just want to reassure the public they are in good hands | :04:53. | :04:55.
People do need reassurance and that is a good thing. | :04:56. | :05:00.
I feel quite protected and safe in the knowledge we have really good | :05:01. | :05:02.
We feel safe, this is our home, our country and we will stay together. | :05:03. | :05:07.
In Parliament today, one of the city's MPs | :05:08. | :05:09.
This attacker and people like him are not of my religion, | :05:10. | :05:16.
And we should condemn all of them who pretend to be | :05:17. | :05:22.
of a particular religion because they are not of religion. | :05:23. | :05:25.
If they were of a religion, they would not be carrying | :05:26. | :05:27.
out acts like this. We have to stay united and show them | :05:28. | :05:30.
they cannot win on these grounds, and we are here to stay. | :05:31. | :05:33.
This morning, people gathered together again | :05:34. | :05:36.
at the Holy Trinity Church, Birchfield. | :05:37. | :05:39.
There was comfort in a cup of tea and shared talk. | :05:40. | :05:42.
Birmingham is a city where communities, religions, | :05:43. | :05:45.
Birmingham, I hope we will be as strong as we always have been, | :05:46. | :05:51.
to stand tall, to support each other, to support our neighbours, | :05:52. | :05:54.
Early this morning, I was invited to a mosque in Balsall Heath. | :05:55. | :06:02.
Some of the earliest Muslim immigrants to Birmingham | :06:03. | :06:05.
What happened in London has been called an Islamist terrorist attack. | :06:06. | :06:12.
No one will accept this kind of action whether it is | :06:13. | :06:15.
Absolutely we are against any type of heinous act like this. | :06:16. | :06:22.
What can the Muslim community do to help the security services? | :06:23. | :06:26.
Any criminal act where we have information to help | :06:27. | :06:29.
an investigation, you should support the security services and provide | :06:30. | :06:33.
The message from the Prime Minister Theresa May was a simple one today. | :06:34. | :06:39.
That message has been echoed on the streets of Birmingham. | :06:40. | :06:46.
The people who live here have also given a simple piece of advice, | :06:47. | :06:49.
the only way the terrorists can win is if we, the people, are divided. | :06:50. | :06:55.
The extra patrols and security were not the result of any immediate | :06:56. | :06:58.
The police repeat that their operation is one of reassurance. | :06:59. | :07:10.
The NHS Trust which runs the Royal Stoke and County | :07:11. | :07:16.
hospitals has been placed into special financial measures. | :07:17. | :07:19.
The University Hospitals of North Midlands is one of ten | :07:20. | :07:24.
Trusts across England, listed as failing to meet | :07:25. | :07:27.
It will receive expert checks on issues such as rota planning - | :07:28. | :07:33.
to reduce their dependence on high-cost agency staff. | :07:34. | :07:35.
The Trust says it welcomes the extra support. | :07:36. | :07:38.
The children's charity, the NSPCC, says the number of child | :07:39. | :07:41.
sex offences recorded in the West Midlands has doubled | :07:42. | :07:44.
Between 2014 and 2015 there were 1,265 cases. | :07:45. | :07:50.
Last year that number rose to more than 2,500. | :07:51. | :07:53.
A national charity is warning the level of personal debt | :07:54. | :07:56.
in the West Midlands is getting worse. | :07:57. | :07:59.
Christians Against Poverty are currently supporting 487 | :08:00. | :08:01.
That's an average of almost ?10,000 each. | :08:02. | :08:16.
Our reporter Amy Cole has been to meet a family in Birmingham | :08:17. | :08:19.
You want beans instead of vegetables? | :08:20. | :08:25.
For the past year, the Baylis family has been slowly | :08:26. | :08:28.
peeling away their debt. With a budget in place, | :08:29. | :08:30.
Kelly's now spending ?60 to ?70 on the weekly shop. | :08:31. | :08:32.
Is that enough? Yes. | :08:33. | :08:35.
Once you know what you are cooking, the ingredients, | :08:36. | :08:37.
and batch cooking helps. How much did you used to spend? | :08:38. | :08:41.
Next door, their debt coach Owen O'Brien is looking | :08:42. | :08:46.
through the budget plan with her husband Karl to see | :08:47. | :08:49.
The family got into difficulties when Karl lost his job and racked up | :08:50. | :08:54.
With two children to support, they turned | :08:55. | :08:59.
to Christians Against Poverty. The charity is unique | :09:00. | :09:02.
in that it sends debt advisers to people's homes. | :09:03. | :09:05.
And it helps clients by dealing directly with their creditors. | :09:06. | :09:08.
It is going to be difficult to actually work out | :09:09. | :09:11.
And that is often where people feel they can't do it or face it. | :09:12. | :09:17.
We come in and we stand in the gap for them, | :09:18. | :09:20.
we speak to the creditors for them, so all they have to do | :09:21. | :09:23.
is speak to us and we take that pressure off them. | :09:24. | :09:25.
It is very easy to stick to if you are prepared | :09:26. | :09:28.
to tighten your belt. I am not stressing about money | :09:29. | :09:30.
any more because I know what my budget is. | :09:31. | :09:33.
The family will continue to receive help until they become debt-free. | :09:34. | :09:36.
Amy Cole, BBC Midlands Today, Birmingham. | :09:37. | :09:39.
That's all from us for now, have a good night - | :09:40. | :09:41.
I'll leave you with the weather from Rebecca. | :09:42. | :09:44.
It has been a fine and dry day today. | :09:45. | :09:50.
We did have some cloud through the morning but started | :09:51. | :09:53.
to see it thinning and breaking and through this afternoon, | :09:54. | :09:55.
the sun managed to break through allowing for some pleasant | :09:56. | :09:58.
spells of sunshine, but with the breeze, it didn't quite | :09:59. | :10:00.
But for tonight, across the south of the region, we are going to keep | :10:01. | :10:06.
the clouds and temperatures there will hold up a little better. | :10:07. | :10:08.
Across the north, where we get some breaks, temperatures will fall away | :10:09. | :10:11.
and we could see some frost patches tomorrow. | :10:12. | :10:13.
Temperatures dropping down to between 3 and 6 Celsius, | :10:14. | :10:16.
so a chilly start but high pressure driving our weather as we head | :10:17. | :10:19.
towards the end of the week, keeping things nice and settled. | :10:20. | :10:22.
So for tomorrow, it will be a chilly start and we will eventually start | :10:23. | :10:26.
to see the sun burning through that cloud. | :10:27. | :10:28.
And it will be a dry and bright afternoon. | :10:29. | :10:31.
Lots of lovely sunshine to come. The winds will be a touch lighter | :10:32. | :10:34.
as well, so temperatures getting up to 11 or 12 Celsius. | :10:35. | :10:36.
They could do a touch better than that. | :10:37. | :10:39.
As we head through the weekend, we're going to keep that | :10:40. | :10:42.
high pressure as well, staying lovely and settled | :10:43. | :10:45.
into Saturday and into Mothering Sunday as well. | :10:46. | :10:48.
Lots more sunshine on the way and temperatures steadily getting | :10:49. | :10:50.
There's information on all of that in the national forecast next. | :10:51. | :10:54.
I will leave you with the outlook for the next couple of days. | :10:55. | :10:57.
weather continue into the second part of the weekend. 1415 degrees. | :10:58. | :11:02.
Still quite breezy. Here's Thomas with the national picture. | :11:03. | :11:08.
Good evening. Some good news on the weather front of this evening. The | :11:09. | :11:13.
weekend is looking sunny for most of the UK. We have got clear skies | :11:14. | :11:16.
across the country and it | :11:17. | :11:17. |
