Good evening. for the news where you are.

:00:08.:00:09.

A surgeon who is accused of maliciously wounding private

:00:10.:00:12.

patients by carrying out unnecessary breast operations in order

:00:13.:00:14.

to earn extra cash has been giving evidence in court.

:00:15.:00:16.

It's been claimed that Ian Paterson, a breast cancer specialist

:00:17.:00:21.

who worked for the Heart of England NHS Trust and private clinics,

:00:22.:00:24.

lied to GPs and distorted medical results to justify

:00:25.:00:26.

He denies 20 counts of unlawfully killing and maliciously wounding ten

:00:27.:00:32.

Ian Paterson, a breast surgeon accused of carrying out unnecessary

:00:33.:00:37.

At Nottingham Crown Court, he's on trial for allegedly causing

:00:38.:00:46.

grievous bodily harm to ten patients over a 14-year period.

:00:47.:00:52.

Today the 59-year-old took the stand.

:00:53.:00:54.

Over the last few weeks the court has heard that the surgeon operated

:00:55.:01:25.

unnecessarily on patients at two private hospitals.

:01:26.:01:30.

The prosecution alleges his motives were obscure and may have included

:01:31.:01:34.

Ian Paterson denies 20 counts of wounding with intent.

A multi-faith vigil has taken place this evening to remember the four

:01:49.:01:53.

victims of the attack in Westminster last Wednesday.

:01:54.:01:56.

Khalid Masood drove onto the pavement killing

:01:57.:01:58.

and injuring pedestrians, before stabbing a police officer.

:01:59.:02:01.

This meeting in Birmingham was organised by the Small Heath

:02:02.:02:11.

Multicultural Faith Forum to pray for the victims of last

:02:12.:02:14.

The family, communities needed to come together to see

:02:15.:02:21.

that they have the ground, they have the platform to talk

:02:22.:02:24.

Police say Khalid Masood had connections with Birmingham.

:02:25.:02:32.

Over the weekend a 30-year-old man was arrested in the city.

:02:33.:02:35.

A 58-year-old man, also arrested in Birmingham, remains in custody.

:02:36.:02:39.

Once again the city is associated with extremism.

:02:40.:02:43.

People here say they must not let this atrocity divide them.

:02:44.:02:47.

When the person comes from Birmingham, and it makes

:02:48.:02:49.

you realise that you can't keep on burying your head in the sand,

:02:50.:02:52.

If you live in the centre of Birmingham, if you live

:02:53.:02:59.

in London, if you live in Leicester, it's the same disgust.

:03:00.:03:01.

We just want to express ourselves that we don't like it,

:03:02.:03:06.

We're not supporting it and we don't want our children to support it.

:03:07.:03:12.

It is good to show that we are not backing down for anyone.

:03:13.:03:16.

Every faith is involved, it is a really good thing.

:03:17.:03:20.

Tonight's vigil is an opportunity the people of all faiths,

:03:21.:03:23.

Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, to get together

:03:24.:03:25.

and reflect on the dreadful incidents of last week.

:03:26.:03:32.

The key message here is that the community should be

:03:33.:03:35.

And as the evening closed, a feeling in the room of optimism

:03:36.:03:39.

that extremism must be confronted and challenged to prevent the next

:03:40.:03:43.

generation from being at risk of radicalisation.

:03:44.:03:47.

Nicola Beckford, BBC Midlands today, Birmingham.

:03:48.:03:51.

A gun dealer from Gloucestershire has denied deliberately smuggling

:03:52.:03:54.

hundreds of illegal firearms into the UK.

:03:55.:03:56.

65-year-old Paul Edmunds is on trial for making and supplying home-made

:03:57.:04:01.

bullets which the prosecution say were found at more than 90 crime

:04:02.:04:05.

scenes, including fatal shootings and a gun attack

:04:06.:04:08.

Police are continuing to search for a hit-and-run driver almost

:04:09.:04:15.

24 hours after the death of a pedestrian who was struck

:04:16.:04:18.

during a seven-mile police chase late last night.

:04:19.:04:20.

One of Birmingham's busiest roads was closed for more than 12 hours

:04:21.:04:23.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is examining

:04:24.:04:27.

Normally one of the busiest routes in the city closed to traffic,

:04:28.:04:36.

a tent covering the spot where a 45-year-old man

:04:37.:04:38.

It happened at twenty to midnight on Belgrave Middleway.

:04:39.:04:44.

Paramedics worked into the small hours trying to save him.

:04:45.:04:48.

After nearly about one hour, two hours, he's still in the ambulance

:04:49.:04:52.

The car that struck him had been chased by police.

:04:53.:05:01.

The pursuit began in the north Birmingham suburb of Erdington,

:05:02.:05:04.

The Mondeo went through a red light and the police abandoned the chase.

:05:05.:05:11.

Moments later the collision happened and the Mondeo then sped off.

:05:12.:05:15.

Two police vehicles have been removed for examination.

:05:16.:05:17.

Investigators from the Independent Police Complaints Commission spent

:05:18.:05:21.

More than 12 hours after this accident, the road is just

:05:22.:05:26.

about to reopen, the hunt for the driver continues.

:05:27.:05:30.

Police are urging him to give himself up.

:05:31.:05:34.

Locals say they're tired of traffic speeding past their doors.

:05:35.:05:38.

I live in this area and I see these traffic lights,

:05:39.:05:44.

I see cars lining up and they're going high-speed and they're racing,

:05:45.:05:47.

To me, it is an accident waiting to go off.

:05:48.:05:53.

Along this road it is like a racetrack.

:05:54.:05:58.

And I would hope that they would put the cameras back because this

:05:59.:06:01.

The road closure led to congestion and long delays for motorists

:06:02.:06:06.

Specialist officers are supporting the family of the dead man.

The challenges of growing up with autism in the 1980s

:06:18.:06:20.

It's been a personal mission for Kevin Healey who wasn't

:06:21.:06:25.

diagnosed with the condition until he was 26.

:06:26.:06:28.

As a young child growing up in Staffordshire, he was labelled as

:06:29.:06:32.

eccentric and he struggled through school life.

:06:33.:06:35.

Here's our arts reporter, Satnam Rana.

:06:36.:06:38.

I felt overloaded so I started to use my right hand as a puppet doll.

:06:39.:06:49.

He became my close friend and was with me wherever I went.

:06:50.:06:56.

Just some of the challenges Kevin Healey faced as a child

:06:57.:06:58.

Dramatised in this film Twin Brothers Worlds Apart.

:06:59.:07:06.

Neighbour Trish remembers how hard it was growing up for young Kevin

:07:07.:07:12.

You were different and there was no other way of putting it

:07:13.:07:19.

because I didn't understand what you had got but I knew your

:07:20.:07:23.

heart was bigger than anything and I used to get angry and I used

:07:24.:07:27.

to come in and stamp my feet and cry and I thought, hang on a minute.

:07:28.:07:34.

He holds his head up high, which you always have done

:07:35.:07:40.

and I am so proud of you, Kevin.

:07:41.:07:43.

Back in the '80s no-one knew Kevin was autistic.

:07:44.:07:46.

His twin brother was diagnosed with autism at 18 but his condition

:07:47.:07:50.

Kevin was diagnosed when he was 26 with a milder form.

:07:51.:07:56.

Satnam, this is the park I grew up in as a child and used to play

:07:57.:07:59.

I know it's in the film, so why did you want to put your personal

:08:00.:08:04.

To raise more awareness of autism and to move away

:08:05.:08:08.

According to the National Autistic Society 700,000 people

:08:09.:08:13.

are on the autism spectrum in the UK, that's

:08:14.:08:16.

As a child, what was it like pre-diagnosis and what is it

:08:17.:08:21.

As a child, I found it really hard to interact with other children

:08:22.:08:28.

and communicate with them as a child growing up.

:08:29.:08:30.

As an adult now, even though I can communicate quite

:08:31.:08:35.

articulately, I still have problems with communication.

:08:36.:08:39.

People not understanding me or certain things I can be quite

:08:40.:08:43.

literal, or quite to the point, and sometimes I can be quite blunt.

:08:44.:08:47.

Kevin's story will premiere tonight and then the film will be taken film

:08:48.:08:52.

festivals as he continues to spread the word.

:08:53.:08:54.

Satnam Rana, BBC Midlands Today, Newcastle Under Lyme.

:08:55.:08:58.

I'll leave you with the weather from Rebecca.

:08:59.:09:10.

The signs of spring with therefore this weekend but we have to look

:09:11.:09:18.

harder to find it today. They were there eventually. This is why we

:09:19.:09:22.

struggled, temperatures tensed Celsius under the cloud. At the

:09:23.:09:29.

weekend we pushed 16 Celsius. This afternoon it started to break and it

:09:30.:09:34.

was a real pleasant end to the day. Some glorious scenes taken by our

:09:35.:09:38.

weather watchers. The rest of the week, a mixed picture. Some spun

:09:39.:09:44.

this to come through the day. Some scattered showers will arrive. It

:09:45.:09:48.

will be milder with temperatures mid to high teens rain arriving I the

:09:49.:09:52.

end of the week. This is why, the battle between high-pressure and low

:09:53.:10:03.

pressure. The weather systems. To work their way through. Overnight we

:10:04.:10:08.

are plenty of cloud and our win direction is changing, a

:10:09.:10:13.

south-westerly. It will bring milder air so temperatures between three

:10:14.:10:16.

and six Celsius. We start tomorrow with sunny spells, some fog across

:10:17.:10:22.

the East Midlands but some breaks in the car before showers pushed their

:10:23.:10:26.

way in from the south, some will be heavy and there could be thunder but

:10:27.:10:31.

temperatures much better than today, 14 or 15 Celsius. Tomorrow, the end

:10:32.:10:36.

we will see showers from the West as the wind direction changes.

:10:37.:10:43.

Temperatures between nine and 11. For the remainder of the week, we

:10:44.:10:47.

continue to see these messy weather systems working their way. It will

:10:48.:10:52.

come and go and bring some spells of rain temperatures will be hovering

:10:53.:10:57.

at around 14 Celsius. I will leave you with a look ahead to the

:10:58.:11:00.

showery on Saturday, dry and brighter on Sunday and if we go back

:11:01.:11:03.

to the temperatures in the next couple days, you see those highs on

:11:04.:11:06.

Thursday. He is John Hammond with the national

:11:07.:11:18.

this cyclone Debbie crashes onto the Queensland coast with violent winds

:11:19.:11:26.

and flooding rains, that will head southwards in the next few days in

:11:27.:11:29.

the direction of Brisbane. We will keep an eye on Debbie. Meanwhile

:11:30.:11:35.

back home, much more tranquil. This beautiful sunset taken from
