are out of the way, will the EU start pursuing a common defence | :00:00. | :00:00.
Good evening. policy? Join me | :00:00. | :00:11.
A mother and her 13-year-old son have died after being stabbed | :00:12. | :00:13.
The boy's father survived the attack and he's being treated in hospital. | :00:14. | :00:19.
Police were called to the house in Greyhound Lane this morning | :00:20. | :00:22.
where they found the family with severe stab wounds. | :00:23. | :00:24.
A short time later, a Land Rover taken from the house was stopped | :00:25. | :00:27.
This evening, we've received these pictures. | :00:28. | :00:37.
You can see the Land Rover being pursued by the police. | :00:38. | :00:40.
Two officers suffered minor injuries when their car was rammed | :00:41. | :00:42.
by the Land Rover which then crashed into a garden wall. | :00:43. | :00:45.
Our reporter Nicola Beckford is in Stourbridge right now. | :00:46. | :00:49.
Well, tonight Nick this detached family home in a quiet part of | :00:50. | :01:00.
two people who died here today have two people who died here today have | :01:01. | :01:04.
been named locally as Tracey Wilkinson and her son, Pierce. Her | :01:05. | :01:09.
husband, Peter, is in hospital in a critical, but stable condition. Now, | :01:10. | :01:16.
we understand that this house has a sophisticated CCTV system and police | :01:17. | :01:19.
were seen to take away what was thought to be part of that system. | :01:20. | :01:22.
Our correspondent Peter Wilson has this report. | :01:23. | :01:27.
The emergency services were met with a scene of horror and heartbreak. A | :01:28. | :01:34.
mother stabbed to death. Her 13-year-old son lay dying inside the | :01:35. | :01:39.
family home. The boy's father had stab wounds to his chest and back | :01:40. | :01:44.
and was found in the back garden. He remains in a critical condition. | :01:45. | :01:51.
They were inflicted by a man known to the family, but not a family | :01:52. | :01:56.
relative. Tragically, there was nothing that could be done to save | :01:57. | :02:00.
the woman. She was pronounced dead at the scene. A Land Rover Discovery | :02:01. | :02:06.
taken from the house in Stourbridge crashed into a brick wall in nearby | :02:07. | :02:12.
Norton Road driven by a man in his 20s. He has been arrested by the | :02:13. | :02:16.
police. The Ambulance Service say that everything was done to try and | :02:17. | :02:20.
save the life of the 13-year-old boy. A child with very serious | :02:21. | :02:26.
injuries was in cardiac arrest at the scene. He was treated very | :02:27. | :02:32.
quickly and given life-saving treatment before being taken to | :02:33. | :02:36.
Birmingham Children's Hospital. Sadly, despite the best efforts of | :02:37. | :02:40.
our staff on scene, and those within the hospital, the child has died. | :02:41. | :02:48.
The house in Greyhound Lane Is the home of Tracey and Peter Wilkinson, | :02:49. | :02:52.
he is a 47-year-old company director. A close friend who has | :02:53. | :02:56.
known him for ten years spoke to me as news began to break that this | :02:57. | :03:01.
successful Black Country businessman has lost both his wife and his | :03:02. | :03:08.
teenage son. I saw him just a few weeks back and what can I say? Like | :03:09. | :03:12.
any other person, living in the local area. Very friendly, | :03:13. | :03:18.
supportive, offered me a drink actually. So we were just chatting | :03:19. | :03:24.
and he was looking to help us as I said, the Conservatives in the area. | :03:25. | :03:28.
And I have been, he has been helping me for years. This afternoon, the | :03:29. | :03:32.
Land Rover was taken away and the main road reopened. The young man | :03:33. | :03:39.
who took the Land Rover Discovery appears to have been driving around | :03:40. | :03:42.
the streets of Stourbridge for more than 30 minutes. He was pursued by | :03:43. | :03:46.
the police. He has driven into that brick wall, but he has collided with | :03:47. | :03:50.
a police patrol car. Tonight more flowers laid at the scene. The | :03:51. | :03:55.
message on one of the bouquets speaks of an amazing family. | :03:56. | :04:05.
Nicola, how has the community reacted? Well, people simply can't | :04:06. | :04:10.
believe what has happened here today. One woman, who didn't want to | :04:11. | :04:15.
be named said she saw a helicopter circling and also the emergency | :04:16. | :04:18.
services running. So she knew something serious had happened. The | :04:19. | :04:26.
reaction is probably the same as reaction is probably the same as | :04:27. | :04:29.
everyone else in Stourbridge, absolute shock and horror that | :04:30. | :04:37.
anything like this can happen in someone's normal day in my | :04:38. | :04:42.
constituency. It's a truly tragic and awful event. There has there | :04:43. | :04:49.
been any word from Pierce's school? Yes, well, Pierce was in year eight | :04:50. | :04:54.
at Redhill School in Stourbridge and they said they would provide support | :04:55. | :05:00.
for all the pupils and staff who needed and guidance to families on | :05:01. | :05:03.
how to support their children. They said that their thoughts and prayers | :05:04. | :05:07.
are with those who have been affected. Nicola, thank you. | :05:08. | :05:11.
A new airline arrived in Birmingham today which has | :05:12. | :05:13.
Jet2 will fly to 23 destinations, but all of the routes are already | :05:14. | :05:17.
So travel experts are predicting a price war. | :05:18. | :05:20.
There was a new kid in town on the tarmac | :05:21. | :05:26.
Leeds based airline Jet2 is expanding further south creating | :05:27. | :05:31.
more competition and more than 200 jobs. | :05:32. | :05:36.
On board this brand new Boeing, they were preparing | :05:37. | :05:39.
I feel privileged to be part of the new operating base and to be on the | :05:40. | :05:55.
aircraft is fantastic. Jet2 will fly to 23 destinations and | :05:56. | :05:59.
there are plans to introduce more routes next year. Account airport | :06:00. | :06:03.
cope with the extra flights? The airport has had some complaints | :06:04. | :06:08.
about delays getting through security and collecting baggage. So | :06:09. | :06:11.
will more airlines make the problem worse? There is no doubt over the | :06:12. | :06:14.
last couple of years we've had growing pains. But this extra growth | :06:15. | :06:17.
that we have had has been a challenge, but we staffed up this | :06:18. | :06:21.
year. We're investing over ?100 million of our shareholders money in | :06:22. | :06:26.
new facilities, new baggage and new security systems and the aim is to | :06:27. | :06:30.
make the journey smother. With other companies flying the | :06:31. | :06:33.
routes as Jet 2, some travel experts routes as Jet 2, some travel experts | :06:34. | :06:37.
are predicting a price war. I will leave it up to the competitors, but | :06:38. | :06:42.
we carry on with our own strategy. Regardless of which airline they | :06:43. | :06:45.
were on, these passengers were only too happy to leave behind the rain | :06:46. | :06:47.
for a few days of sunshine. There's more encouraging | :06:48. | :06:56.
news about jobs around The supermarket company Lidl has | :06:57. | :06:57.
opened a new warehouse And in Stoke-on-Trent, 50 jobs | :06:58. | :07:00.
are to be created with the opening Meanwhile, in Dudley, | :07:01. | :07:05.
plans were unveiled today It will offer technical | :07:06. | :07:08.
degrees in construction, We want to create is a centre | :07:09. | :07:11.
in Dudley with fantastic training facilities that young people | :07:12. | :07:22.
and adults who have already got the technical skills up to level | :07:23. | :07:28.
four and five can top into their degree | :07:29. | :07:31.
and make them even more An inquest has been hearing how | :07:32. | :07:33.
a 27-year-old man killed himself with a euthanasia drug | :07:34. | :07:40.
he'd bought online. The coroner ruled that Josh Smith | :07:41. | :07:42.
had taken his own life when mentally unwell, | :07:43. | :07:44.
but his family say that South Staffordshire | :07:45. | :07:46.
and Shropshire Healthcare bosses He constantly heard, | :07:47. | :07:48.
"I can't help you. We're going to discharge | :07:49. | :07:51.
you to the next service and we're going to refer you back for some | :07:52. | :07:53.
more assessment" and to be asked into their degree | :07:54. | :07:57.
and make them even more He constantly heard, | :07:58. | :07:59.
"I can't help you. We're going to discharge | :08:00. | :08:12.
you to the next service and we're going to refer you back for some | :08:13. | :08:14.
more assessment" and to be asked I think in the end that just | :08:15. | :08:18.
all became too much and it added South Staffs Water has unveiled | :08:19. | :08:22.
a new multimillion pound treatment plant that uses ultraviolet light | :08:23. | :08:26.
to turn raw reservoir water It means the company can | :08:27. | :08:28.
cut back on traditional chemical treatments, | :08:29. | :08:31.
such as chlorine. Science Correspondent David | :08:32. | :08:32.
Gregory-Kumar reports. Blithfield Reservoir east | :08:33. | :08:33.
of Stafford supplies water for over 200 South Staffs water customers | :08:34. | :08:35.
and the treatment plant itself near Lichfield turns that reservoir | :08:36. | :08:38.
water into drinking water and it We constructed and | :08:39. | :08:40.
commissioned it in 1952. It is is our ultraviolet | :08:41. | :08:44.
treatment plant. One of our latest investments | :08:45. | :08:46.
in order to enhance the quality of water we provide | :08:47. | :08:49.
to our customers. So large tanks that were used | :08:50. | :08:50.
to store water on site will now be converted | :08:51. | :08:53.
to a new ultraviolet Work began in 2015 and four new UV | :08:54. | :08:55.
reactors have been installed without interrupting the water | :08:56. | :08:59.
supply to South Staffs customers. This is one of the UV tubes that | :09:00. | :09:03.
will be cleaning the water. It is worth ?250 and there | :09:04. | :09:10.
are 30 in each UV reactor, that's this bit here | :09:11. | :09:12.
with a big black cap. The UV tubes clean the water | :09:13. | :09:15.
and they allow South Staffs to reduce traditional chemical | :09:16. | :09:17.
treatments like adding chlorine. Water flows over the ultraviolet | :09:18. | :09:19.
lamps as the final stage of This new facility is one | :09:20. | :09:22.
of the largest in the UK, but similar technology on a smaller | :09:23. | :09:31.
scale can be introduced I'll leave you now with | :09:32. | :09:33.
the weather from Rebecca Wood. Good evening. | :09:34. | :09:51.
It was a pleasant end to the day today. Lovely scenes out there. In | :09:52. | :09:55.
terms of temperature, it was a stunner of a day. Temperatures got | :09:56. | :10:00.
up to 21 Celsius in some parts. Out there at the moment, they are around | :10:01. | :10:05.
mild night on the way. There is mild night on the way. There is | :10:06. | :10:08.
plenty of cloud out there. We are plenty of cloud out there. We are | :10:09. | :10:15.
seeing it. Overnight tonight, temperatures sticking in double | :10:16. | :10:19.
figures. So it is a mild night. Lows of 11 or 12 Celsius. We start the | :10:20. | :10:23.
day tomorrow with that cold front. Working its way in from the westment | :10:24. | :10:27.
it will thicken up the cloud and it will bring with it rain. At times it | :10:28. | :10:30.
could be heavy. Behind that, with that southerly breeze, it is milder, | :10:31. | :10:35.
but it will feel fresher. So, we start off with scattering of showers | :10:36. | :10:39.
through the morning. A brief spell where we get a dry period, but we | :10:40. | :10:43.
will start to see more showers clearing their way through. Behind | :10:44. | :10:48.
that, the keen breeze will continue. The cloud will break and the sun | :10:49. | :10:52.
will come out. The weekend, a bit of a split picture. Saturday, we have | :10:53. | :10:56.
got showers to come, but it is looking much better by the time we | :10:57. | :10:59.
head through to Sunday. There is more information on all of that in | :11:00. | :11:00.
the national forecast. time of year. The chance of a shower | :11:01. | :11:04.
on | :11:05. | :11:05. |
