It was a passive act of defiance, which has attracted

:00:09.:00:13.

This picture of Saffiyah Khan smiling at an English Defence League

:00:14.:00:17.

supporter at the weekend, has been shared thousands of times.

:00:18.:00:19.

Saffiyah says she stepped in to protect a woman who had been

:00:20.:00:22.

surrounded by members of the far right movement, during

:00:23.:00:24.

their demonstration in Birmingham on Saturday.

:00:25.:00:26.

The EDL claims that she disrupted a minute's silence for terror attack

:00:27.:00:29.

victims during the rally, which she denies.

:00:30.:00:31.

An image that's travelled around the world - today,

:00:32.:00:38.

at home in Acocks Green, Saffiyah Khan was reflecting on her

:00:39.:00:41.

moment of defiance at Saturday's EDL demonstration in Birmingham.

:00:42.:00:47.

She says she stepped in to help a Muslim woman

:00:48.:00:49.

She seemed scared, but regardless of whether or not she felt scared,

:00:50.:00:55.

the fact of the matter is there was a group

:00:56.:00:58.

of EDL surrounding her, and I don't think anybody should be

:00:59.:01:02.

The photograph shows Saffiyah appearing to smile at EDL

:01:03.:01:07.

She says he was poking his finger in her face,

:01:08.:01:12.

I was just looking at the guy, and sometimes just the best

:01:13.:01:18.

Were you actually scared when you intervened?

:01:19.:01:21.

I wasn't then, and I'm not now, and I don't intend to be.

:01:22.:01:29.

Ian Crossland hasn't yet commented today,

:01:30.:01:32.

but he did speak on Saturday before the photograph was taken.

:01:33.:01:36.

It's not a demonstration against Muslims, it's

:01:37.:01:38.

a demonstration against radical Mu...Islam.

:01:39.:01:41.

Around 100 people took part in the rally.

:01:42.:01:43.

The EDL says it moved the protest from Derby to Birmingham

:01:44.:01:46.

because Khalid Masood, the Westminster attacker,

:01:47.:01:50.

On a site claiming to be the EDL's official Facebook page,

:01:51.:01:56.

it said Saffiyah had been "disrespectful, shouting

:01:57.:01:59.

during a minute's silence for victims of terror attacks

:02:00.:02:03.

Saffiyah says there was no "one-minute silence".

:02:04.:02:09.

That's a really hurtful claim, because anyone that knows me,

:02:10.:02:11.

even not particularly well, or has just talk to me once

:02:12.:02:17.

or twice, can vouch for the fact that I would respect a minute's

:02:18.:02:20.

Saffiyah also denies claims she's a member of any anti-fascist group.

:02:21.:02:32.

People we spoke to seemed happy the photograph had been circulated

:02:33.:02:35.

I think it's a brave act, especially because they are quite,

:02:36.:02:41.

you know, they are a lot more aggressive and physically taller

:02:42.:02:43.

When she stayed calm, I think it brought more

:02:44.:02:49.

awareness to it rather than causing an argument.

:02:50.:02:51.

Saffiyah says she finds it strange the picture has

:02:52.:02:53.

attracted such notoriety, but hopes it'll motivate

:02:54.:02:56.

A mum, drunk on vodka, who lost control of her car

:02:57.:03:05.

in a high-speed crash as her toddler son sat in the back seat,

:03:06.:03:09.

32-year-old Tania Chikwature, from Coventry, was more than three

:03:10.:03:15.

times over the drink-drive limit, when she lost control

:03:16.:03:17.

of her Nissan Qashqai near Peterborough in December.

:03:18.:03:20.

Our reporter Ben Sidwell has the details.

:03:21.:03:23.

The images are really quite shocking.

:03:24.:03:29.

The accident happened on December the 12th,

:03:30.:03:32.

Tania Chikwature hit a roundabout while overtaking a lorry

:03:33.:03:36.

Take a look at these pictures taken from the dash

:03:37.:03:41.

The impact catapulted the car 14 feet into the air,

:03:42.:03:52.

it hit a tree and then landed on its roof on the other side.

:03:53.:03:57.

In the back seat of her car was her 20 month old son.

:03:58.:04:00.

Incredibly, he wasn't hurt and was found by passing motorists

:04:01.:04:04.

still in his car seat hanging upside down.

:04:05.:04:08.

What was the court told today? and was cut free by fire-fighters.

:04:09.:04:19.

Today Magistrates heard that she'd been up drinking vodka

:04:20.:04:21.

the night before the crash, and a vodka bottle was found

:04:22.:04:24.

She refused to do a breath test at the scene, but was later

:04:25.:04:29.

Officers then worked out that at the time of the incident

:04:30.:04:32.

she was more than three times over the drink-drive limit.

:04:33.:04:35.

The police officer in charge of the case said Chikwature had

:04:36.:04:38.

showed complete disregard for the safety and welfare

:04:39.:04:40.

He said it was pure luck that nobody was killed.

:04:41.:04:46.

Chikwature admitted dangerous driving and was jailed for 26 weeks.

:04:47.:04:49.

She also admitted drinking and driving, and was sentenced to 12

:04:50.:04:53.

She was banned from driving for three years.

:04:54.:04:56.

A 26-year-old man's appeared in court charged with murdering

:04:57.:04:58.

a father of four, at a tram stop in Birmingham.

:04:59.:05:02.

Anthony Banting died after being stabbed a number

:05:03.:05:03.

of times in Winson Green on March the 31st.

:05:04.:05:06.

Alaeldein Ahmed appeared before magistrates in

:05:07.:05:09.

He was remanded in custody and is due to appear

:05:10.:05:12.

at Birmingham Crown Court on Wednesday.

:05:13.:05:15.

A controversial plan to award a ?690 million contract,

:05:16.:05:18.

covering cancer care in Staffordshire, has been scrapped.

:05:19.:05:22.

The proposals involved University Hospital North Midlands

:05:23.:05:24.

and Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals, but it would have meant a contractor

:05:25.:05:27.

taking on ten per cent more work, with no extra money.

:05:28.:05:32.

Health bosses have decided it was too financially

:05:33.:05:34.

In simple terms, they couldn't demonstrate they were able to manage

:05:35.:05:48.

the risk of the contract. We wanted them to increase the number of

:05:49.:05:51.

people who were diagnosed with cancer and, actually, ensure they

:05:52.:05:56.

were treated but within the same money available previously.

:05:57.:05:57.

A woman from Stourbridge who was seriously injured

:05:58.:05:59.

when she rescued a child off the coast of Devon, has been

:06:00.:06:02.

speaking about her determination to be able to live in her own home.

:06:03.:06:05.

Deb Drew has been in a rehabilitation centre

:06:06.:06:07.

since suffering severe injuries following the rescue in 2014.

:06:08.:06:10.

Now friends and family are fundraising, so she can

:06:11.:06:12.

Kisses for a dear friend whom they rarely get to see these days.

:06:13.:06:22.

A chance for Deb Drew to get out of her rehabilitation centre

:06:23.:06:27.

where she now spends all of her time.

:06:28.:06:30.

Back in 2014 she was holidaying in Woolacombe off

:06:31.:06:33.

Deb saw a young boy get into difficulties in the sea

:06:34.:06:37.

Both had to be rescued by the coastguard, but Deb suffered

:06:38.:06:42.

I can't move, so I can't wash myself or...

:06:43.:06:54.

I can now clean my teeth and feed myself breakfast now, so, obviously,

:06:55.:07:01.

She's a mother of two boys, who are now in their teens,

:07:02.:07:11.

and her dream is to spend this Christmas at home with them -

:07:12.:07:14.

she's not been back there since the accident.

:07:15.:07:16.

But she needs a very expensive wheelchair that

:07:17.:07:19.

can help her stand up, so friends from her old tennis club

:07:20.:07:22.

are cycling, pumping iron and getting fit fast

:07:23.:07:25.

for a three-day fundraising challenge.

:07:26.:07:30.

We are going to run up and down Snowdon in

:07:31.:07:33.

a fell race style challenge, and then we are going to swim

:07:34.:07:36.

on Lake Bala, which I understand in May is pretty cold,

:07:37.:07:38.

so we are all quite excited about that, and then

:07:39.:07:41.

we are going to do a 60-mile bike dash, a relay bike dash

:07:42.:07:45.

from the centre of Wales, mid-Wales, to our finish point,

:07:46.:07:48.

They need to raise ?25,000, and Deb couldn't be more grateful.

:07:49.:07:57.

Her mother Beryl is also a constant support.

:07:58.:08:07.

She says enabling her daughter to go home would be a huge relief.

:08:08.:08:11.

Her mind is healing quicker than her body is healing, which makes it...

:08:12.:08:16.

In one way it's good, but in another way it's not so good,

:08:17.:08:23.

because she's got time to think and wonder what's going to happen.

:08:24.:08:30.

Deb knows the boy survived but has never heard from his family.

:08:31.:08:34.

Her friends say she is truly selfless.

:08:35.:08:37.

Now when was the last time you wrote or received a handwritten letter?

:08:38.:08:44.

That's one of the ideas behind a new exhibition in Birmingham.

:08:45.:08:47.

It's been organised by Jodi Anne Bickley.

:08:48.:08:49.

After suffering serious illness and depression,

:08:50.:08:50.

she started the project One Million Lovely Letters in 2013,

:08:51.:08:54.

She's sent 4,000 and has a waiting list of 8,000.

:08:55.:09:01.

With so much demand, she's taken on ten letter writing volunteers.

:09:02.:09:05.

She hopes the exhibition will inspire others to start

:09:06.:09:07.

That's all from me, have a good night.

:09:08.:09:11.

Shefali has the forecast for the week ahead.

:09:12.:09:17.

Hallo and good evening. Yes I was going to be a hard act to follow,

:09:18.:09:24.

take a look at the contrast between the deep blue skies yesterday and

:09:25.:09:28.

the cloudy ones today. That has had a knock-on effect in temperatures,

:09:29.:09:34.

dropping them 8-10 . Yesterday was abnormally warm for the time of year

:09:35.:09:38.

and this week you'll find temperatures will be average for

:09:39.:09:42.

this time of year, perhaps high initially, then mid week onwards

:09:43.:09:46.

becoming a little bit lower as the breeze freshens up from the West.

:09:47.:09:51.

Generally speaking, just occasional showers sunshine. Tonight is settled

:09:52.:09:55.

with clear skies out there with a bit of patchy cloud here and there

:09:56.:10:00.

with temperatures dropping down to five in the south-west of the region

:10:01.:10:04.

and these figures are for the towns and cities and it is colder in the

:10:05.:10:07.

countryside. They chilly start tomorrow but plenty of sunshine on

:10:08.:10:12.

offer with some cloud bubbling up. It is a dry day temperatures rising

:10:13.:10:20.

to 15-16 with a moderate breeze. Tomorrow night, a frontal system

:10:21.:10:25.

pushes down from the north-west, pushing the cloud our way, keeping

:10:26.:10:29.

things drier for the entirety of tomorrow night with temperatures

:10:30.:10:34.

higher than tonight. We start the day on Wednesday 7-8. Some lighter

:10:35.:10:40.

outbreaks of rain to the south-east, just the odd heavier burst here and

:10:41.:10:45.

there with sunshine in between and temperatures 13-14. There is a

:10:46.:10:50.

breeze from the West, and as a result of this frontal system

:10:51.:10:54.

pushing out of the south-east, breezy conditions developing through

:10:55.:11:01.

the rest of the week. So, dryer on Thursday, a spot of rain on

:11:02.:11:05.

will have to keep an eye on the National forecast with Matt Taylor.

:11:06.:11:07.
