Welcome to North West Tonight with Roger Johnson and

:00:07.:00:10.

Subjected to homophobic abuse and intimidation.

:00:11.:00:13.

Complaints by Wallasey MP Angela Eagle are supported

:00:14.:00:15.

Knock back the incident happened after she announced a leadership

:00:16.:00:27.

More jobs available than evdr before, so why are people hdre are

:00:28.:00:37.

?100,000 raised in just 36 hours for pioneering treatment,

:00:38.:00:40.

which has given Erin the ch`nce of a normal life.

:00:41.:00:43.

An industrial artery then a life-blood for leisure.

:00:44.:00:45.

We celebrate two centuries of England's longest canal.

:00:46.:00:49.

It is part of our heritage `nd it hasn't to be forgotten. That's

:00:50.:00:57.

really our line. It's here hn your heart. It is.

:00:58.:01:07.

The Labour Party has upheld complaints by the Wallace MP

:01:08.:01:10.

Angela Eagle that she and hdr staff were subjected to homophobic

:01:11.:01:13.

abuse and intimidation by local party activists.

:01:14.:01:16.

The MP, who was involved in the leadership challenge

:01:17.:01:19.

to Jeremy Corbyn, said she was pleased that the parties NEC

:01:20.:01:22.

Meanwhile a 45-year-old man has pleaded guilty to sending ddath

:01:23.:01:29.

threats to her on the day she launched her leadership bid

:01:30.:01:31.

Our political reporter Kevin Fitzpatrick is outsidd

:01:32.:01:33.

Tensions within the local L`bour Party came to a head back in the

:01:34.:01:46.

summer when Angela Eagle began to criticise Jeremy Corbyn and

:01:47.:01:50.

ultimately challenged him for leadership. The Labour Partx agreed

:01:51.:01:53.

with her that's when the abtse began. It is confirmed she suffered

:01:54.:01:58.

homophobic abuse at the constituency meeting. Her office did recdive

:01:59.:02:03.

intimidating phone calls and they received hundreds of messagds that

:02:04.:02:08.

were abusive, intimidating, homophobic and menacing. It also

:02:09.:02:12.

said that it's highly likelx an attack on this office where it

:02:13.:02:17.

break-up was thrown through a window was linked to her leadership bid. I

:02:18.:02:24.

spoke to a local party membdr who supports her. Ultimately thd report

:02:25.:02:28.

outlines and very serious issues within the local Labour Party. It's

:02:29.:02:31.

made it clear that there was an unpleasant mood for many melbers.

:02:32.:02:36.

There was intimidation and homophobia and ultimately it was

:02:37.:02:40.

abuse. It doesn't quite cle`r that what's happened is unaccept`ble and

:02:41.:02:43.

I think the report makes th`t clear and I think it's a positive step for

:02:44.:02:49.

the local Labour Party. Has been any response from the constituency

:02:50.:02:54.

party? No one from the constituency party was prepared to do an

:02:55.:02:58.

interview, but we do have a statement from the chair. She said

:02:59.:03:01.

you was disappointed at what this report has concluded. She is

:03:02.:03:09.

critical of the fact that the party says it happened despite not naming

:03:10.:03:13.

anyone who is involved in that. That could come in January when the

:03:14.:03:17.

Labour Party meets to discuss this. Charges could come towards

:03:18.:03:21.

individuals on that they cotld be kicked out of the party. Angela

:03:22.:03:24.

Eagle has welcomed the result of this report and has also expressed

:03:25.:03:28.

gratitude to Jeremy Corbyn who she said turned up at the meeting, had

:03:29.:03:33.

his say and he expressed sincere sympathy to her and staff. Ht also

:03:34.:03:40.

we have been speaking to political experts who say that despitd this,

:03:41.:03:44.

you have to wonder where thd party goes from here. Where does the

:03:45.:03:48.

Wallasey constituency party go from your? They can either get themselves

:03:49.:03:53.

back together via mediation order is the potential for expulsions of

:03:54.:03:58.

certain members. This presents a picture of a constituency more akin

:03:59.:04:03.

to that 1980s Merseyside in which you have backing forces on dither

:04:04.:04:08.

side of a political divide. Iman has also been in court today ovdr making

:04:09.:04:16.

threats to Ms Eagle. Yes, Stephen King from Paisley in Scotland, who

:04:17.:04:22.

is 45 years old. On the day she put a leadership bid in, he sent her a

:04:23.:04:30.

e-mail saying that if she bdcame leader Stewart Di and the ndxt ten

:04:31.:04:33.

years or he would have a gun or a knife with him. He said he was just

:04:34.:04:39.

letting off steam, he was found guilty of menacing messaging and has

:04:40.:04:44.

been given an eight week suspended prison sentence. Image five involved

:04:45.:04:53.

in the maternity scandal has been struck off. The Council found that

:04:54.:04:57.

she feels to provide basic character baby Joshua who died aged nhne days.

:04:58.:05:05.

She was already suspended after the death of another baby in March this

:05:06.:05:09.

year. The panel said she showed little remarks for her actions.

:05:10.:05:13.

The Secretary of State for Dducation has been in the north-west today,

:05:14.:05:16.

after Oldham was chosen to receive a share of ?60 million

:05:17.:05:19.

under the Government's new Opportunity Areas schemd,

:05:20.:05:20.

designed to help children get a good start.

:05:21.:05:22.

Justine greening was visiting the borough - which is one of Six

:05:23.:05:25.

areas in the country - identified as the most challenged

:05:26.:05:28.

Oldham will now now have access to funding to address some

:05:29.:05:32.

of its biggest challenges around schools, colleges

:05:33.:05:34.

It's an overall ?60 million pot but the point is that we're

:05:35.:05:37.

going to work with schools to provide additional support inside

:05:38.:05:40.

But also then making sure that things

:05:41.:05:42.

like the National citizens service that offers opportunities for young

:05:43.:05:45.

people in Oldham, making sure that the careers and enterprise

:05:46.:05:47.

company is really focusing on Oldham to help

:05:48.:05:49.

young people understand just how many opportunities there ard.

:05:50.:05:51.

The trial of a cheshire councillor accused of obstructing an officer

:05:52.:05:54.

as police tried to clear an anti-fracking camp began today.

:05:55.:05:57.

Councillor Matthew Bryan was arrested in Jaunary

:05:58.:06:00.

He climbed a cherry picker to stop it entering a field,

:06:01.:06:04.

as he was worried the weight of it would collapse onto protestors

:06:05.:06:07.

He, along with seven other protestors on trial for a v`riety

:06:08.:06:11.

of offences, deny all charges against them.

:06:12.:06:12.

The trial is expected to last a week.

:06:13.:06:14.

The case against a former tdacher accused of abusing boys

:06:15.:06:16.

at Knowl View School in Rochdale has been dropped.

:06:17.:06:19.

David Higgins, who's now 76, was due to go on trial later this ydar

:06:20.:06:22.

He's already in jail, having been previously

:06:23.:06:25.

But now prosecutors say there's not enough evidence

:06:26.:06:28.

to take him to court, after new information came to light.

:06:29.:06:31.

MP for Rochdale Simon Dancztk has written a book about the abtse

:06:32.:06:34.

Well, I am very disappointed for the victims of child

:06:35.:06:40.

There's been a complete failure here from Manchester police.

:06:41.:06:43.

People all around Rochdale talk about the abuse

:06:44.:06:45.

that was meted out at the school and yes, Greater Manchester Police

:06:46.:06:48.

I think what we now need of the Independent Police

:06:49.:07:02.

Complaints Commission to look at why there is a lack of professionalism

:07:03.:07:04.

within Greater Manchester Police when it comes to investigathng

:07:05.:07:07.

That obviously is something that they would refute.

:07:08.:07:10.

Is there part of you, as the Rochdale MP, they're

:07:11.:07:12.

just wishes that the name of Rochdale would stop being linked

:07:13.:07:15.

with crimes and allegations of crimes that this?

:07:16.:07:17.

I think it has been good for a Rochdale to clear up

:07:18.:07:20.

a lot of what's gone on before, whether that was in terms of sales

:07:21.:07:26.

who has been proven to be a paedophile.

:07:27.:07:32.

Whether it's in terms of

:07:33.:07:33.

the Rochdale grooming scand`l, as has been called.

:07:34.:07:35.

We have prosecutions around that as well.

:07:36.:07:37.

I think there has been healthy and

:07:38.:07:38.

positive for the town and I think people are proud of the fact that

:07:39.:07:42.

There's a lot of good going on in Rochdale

:07:43.:07:46.

are going to capitalise on that there is no doubt about it.

:07:47.:07:49.

Can the complainants in this case take any

:07:50.:07:51.

comfort do you think from the

:07:52.:07:52.

fact that David Higgins, who they accused,

:07:53.:07:54.

Well, that's why we would have assumed

:07:55.:07:58.

that it would have been so luch easier to bring a case against him

:07:59.:08:01.

and that I am puzzled as to why they couldn't stack the evidence up

:08:02.:08:04.

I think they will take little comfort from these decisions about

:08:05.:08:08.

I think they have to now make representations to the national

:08:09.:08:12.

The latest unemployment figures were out today.

:08:13.:08:16.

The number of people out of work in the north-west went up bx 8, 00

:08:17.:08:19.

There are now 182,000 peopld unemployed in the region.

:08:20.:08:24.

That's 5.1% of the workforcd, just above the national average

:08:25.:08:30.

But when you compare these figures to previous years,

:08:31.:08:32.

it appears the picture isn't so bleak.

:08:33.:08:36.

In 2012 there were 335,000 people unemployed in the region.

:08:37.:08:38.

That was 9.5% of the workforce, compared to 8.1% nationally.

:08:39.:08:41.

Since then, the number of unemployed has steadily fallen,

:08:42.:08:44.

while still remaining above the national average ,

:08:45.:08:47.

hitting a low of 174,000 between April and June this year.

:08:48.:08:53.

Stuart Flinders has been to find out whether those headline figures

:08:54.:08:57.

Rob Dixon certainly isn't complaning about falling unemployment rates,

:08:58.:09:28.

but the trend does give him a finished a batch of there's

:09:29.:09:30.

going to be he is trying to expand his business in Stockport,

:09:31.:09:33.

If we advertise we we offer interviews to everybody.

:09:34.:09:37.

Have to help, to we might rdgret, and one was levered in the first two

:09:38.:09:45.

weeks. It's hard work and for small business in particular, the head of

:09:46.:09:47.

resources needed to put into that, in his to be made easier. The

:09:48.:09:54.

figures are welcomed at job centres like this. They are part of the

:09:55.:09:58.

recent trend that suggest more and more people, particularly women are

:09:59.:10:06.

finding work. Of year, therd are an additional 63,000 people who find

:10:07.:10:09.

work. That is consistent throughout the region. We think that is a

:10:10.:10:13.

positive story. There are still a lot of vacancies out there, mainly

:10:14.:10:15.

in the care and hospitality sectors. Marcus Fogerty has been

:10:16.:10:19.

unemployed for a long time. I guess, even if unemployment

:10:20.:10:21.

is coming down, if you're ott It's still hard to get

:10:22.:10:23.

the job, isn't it? Yeah, it's time-consuming

:10:24.:10:27.

and what they say to people is, There are still jobs

:10:28.:10:29.

available of course, Another really big concern

:10:30.:10:33.

is about the quality Over the last few years, we've seen

:10:34.:10:37.

even your shift in the labotr market from full-time, perm`nent

:10:38.:10:42.

positions to part-time, short time And that is a major

:10:43.:10:44.

concern in terms of Employment figures may be ilproving,

:10:45.:10:47.

but the unions and businesslen like Rob Dixon agree, more needs to be

:10:48.:10:57.

done to improve the skills of those When Erin Cross needed

:10:58.:11:00.

pioneering medical treatment in the United States,

:11:01.:11:12.

her parents faced a major challenge - they had to raise

:11:13.:11:14.

?140,00, and quickly. Amazingly, an appeal

:11:15.:11:17.

via social media brought Erin flew out to the States,

:11:18.:11:18.

spent three months undergoing treatment and is now back

:11:19.:11:30.

home in Chester. Dave Guest has been

:11:31.:11:35.

to meet her and her family. To see her playing happily,

:11:36.:11:39.

you'd never guess that Erin has been though some pretty tough tiles

:11:40.:11:42.

in her short life. She was diagnosed with

:11:43.:11:44.

leukaemia at the age of two. Her parents were then told she'd

:11:45.:11:51.

need a bone marrow transplant. We needed to get airing into

:11:52.:11:54.

remission, as she could havd a bone marrow transplant, so she c`n be

:11:55.:12:01.

fully cured of the leukemia. Erin's parents heard of a phoneering

:12:02.:12:04.

cell engineering therapy being tried out in America,

:12:05.:12:06.

which offered the best chance of getting Erin into remisshon

:12:07.:12:08.

so that she could have that Trials in the UK are

still in their infancy. At the time we needed the treatment,

:12:12.:12:16.

Seattle was the only option for us. Basically, blood is taken

from the patient and so-called T They're then re-engineered `nd

from the bottom of our hearts. Everyone that supported and donated

:12:51.:12:57.

retweeted and shared the story on social media.

:12:58.:12:59.

So in July, the family arrived in the states

:13:00.:13:06.

It wasn't without difficulthes, this is Erin in ICU.

:13:07.:13:13.

She'd suffered seizures after her first infusion.

:13:14.:13:14.

But within weeks, there were big improvements.

:13:15.:13:16.

Erin even became a minor celebrity on American TV.

:13:17.:13:18.

:13:19.:13:23.

And, Anthony, how is she now singes had this therapy in

:13:32.:13:36.

immune system is still working to get better.

:13:37.:13:39.

Yes, so now she is ready for transplants and preparations

:13:40.:13:41.

have taken place at Manchester's children's hospital.

:13:42.:13:43.

For now, Erin's family have their minds focused on

:13:44.:13:49.

next month when she'll have that bone marrow transplant in M`nchester

:13:50.:13:52.

and hopefully be rid of leukaemia for good.

:13:53.:13:54.

Dave Guest, BBC North West Tonight, Chester.

:13:55.:14:07.

We really wish her well. Th`t is when social media is really used for

:14:08.:14:16.

good. In minor celebrity on American TV, a major celebrity.

:14:17.:14:22.

Investigations are continuing into her part of Manchester stathons roof

:14:23.:14:31.

collapsed last night. Witness is described gallons of water falling

:14:32.:14:32.

onto the platform. Manchester Victoria Station's revamp

:14:33.:14:42.

cost ?44 million, having its roof succumbed to the Manchester rain was

:14:43.:14:47.

not part of the plan. Must that lacklustre back we want to lake sure

:14:48.:14:50.

that passengers are safe and that people make a full recovery from

:14:51.:14:54.

what happened last night. Wd have a plastic bubble roof and it developed

:14:55.:14:58.

a whole and the rainwater got in and created a mass of water which fell

:14:59.:15:01.

through the sheet below it. Today the area around the first and second

:15:02.:15:07.

platforms remain closed. Thd roof panels that were damaged have now

:15:08.:15:10.

been secured, the station rdmains open with services running normally.

:15:11.:15:16.

It's not just the rain that has been blamed as the cause of the roof

:15:17.:15:20.

collapse, some are pointing the finger at seagulls. There h`ve been

:15:21.:15:23.

some suggestion that seagulls could be to blame, is there any truth in

:15:24.:15:30.

that? It is far too early, ht is a complex roof, a brand-new structure

:15:31.:15:33.

and it is too early to put labels on it. Not quite what ever, has left

:15:34.:15:42.

some commuters wary. It is lovely, but one mistake could turn hnto a

:15:43.:15:47.

disaster. It should not happen. If the rain find any weakness hn any

designed to do with have done full checks to make sure that is the

:16:06.:16:09.

case. A replacement roof panel is due to be installed this wedkend.

:16:10.:16:11.

It's been described as one of the most important constructions

:16:12.:16:14.

127 miles in length - the longest canal in England.

:16:15.:16:18.

Today, in Blackburn, they celebrated its 200th

:16:19.:16:20.

anniversary with the hope that its historical

:16:21.:16:23.

significance to the North Wdst will never be forgotten.

The serenity and silence th`t this flotilla was never going to last.

:16:59.:17:01.

tears. It's been absolutely amazing. Amazing, the amount of people that

:17:02.:17:08.

have come out and just waved the banners. Shouted, whistled, it's

:17:09.:17:13.

been amazing. This journey we create an inaugural voyage made in 181

:17:14.:17:19.

when the canal first opened. That first voyage, according to reports

:17:20.:17:25.

of the time, was accompanied by a hearty cheering spectators. Today

:17:26.:17:35.

was much the same. Not everx water way is quite as celebrated `s this

:17:36.:17:40.

one. It even had a special symphony written in its honour. What is it

:17:41.:17:45.

that makes it so special? In its day it helps fire the Industrial

:17:46.:17:48.

Revolution, carrying cotton, coal and will, it brought wealth and have

:17:49.:17:54.

the great Lancashire towns `long its route to develop. What are we doing

:17:55.:17:57.

today that we will celebratd in 200 years' time? I just cant thhnk of

:17:58.:18:02.

anything that will have the same impact that the canal to it. The

:18:03.:18:09.

enterprise of the people from work to Yorkshire and Lancashire who had

:18:10.:18:13.

the foresight to build something so spectacular and relevant and really

:18:14.:18:17.

made the country what it is now in terms of trade and today it is still

:18:18.:18:22.

so relevant in terms of leisure It is part of our heritage and it

:18:23.:18:28.

hasn't been forgotten. It is here in your heart, it is. Its journey

:18:29.:18:33.

doesn't end here, it's headhng onwards towards Liverpool, `rriving

:18:34.:18:39.

there on Sunday. That was a very fetching outfit.

:18:40.:18:41.

Sport now with Richard and Manchester City fans will be

:18:42.:18:45.

hoping inside knowledge can make the difference in the

:18:46.:18:47.

Yes, City have one of the toughest tests in football tonight,

:18:48.:18:58.

away to Barcelona in the Ch`mpions League.

:18:59.:19:01.

Barca have been a real problem for City in recent seasons,

:19:02.:19:04.

but this time their former lanager Pep Guardiola is in

:19:05.:19:06.

He won 14 trophies in four seasons at the Camp Nou and tonight takes

:19:07.:19:11.

City to his old stomping ground for the very first time.

:19:12.:19:31.

With a front three to strikd fear into any defence, Barcelona away is

:19:32.:19:39.

as tough as they come. No one knows that more than city's boss. I grew

:19:40.:19:48.

up here as a boy. I made my career here, so it's always special. My

:19:49.:19:53.

family is here, that's I am always happy. It's a good test for us to

:19:54.:20:01.

play against the best team. In many ways, Pep Guardiola is trying to

:20:02.:20:06.

build city in Barcelona's ilage something that hasn't gone tnnoticed

:20:07.:20:10.

by the Spanish champions. I think they play more or less the same

:20:11.:20:15.

style as ours. Pep Guardiol` was here for a loss of years and he

:20:16.:20:20.
