I'm at the River Irwell where Kei lots of pollution in three weeks | :00:46. | :00:50.
have devastated the water, setting back wildlife by three years. And | :00:51. | :00:53.
when hundreds of years in the making. From a tiny hamlet to a | :00:54. | :00:58.
major seaport, we celebrate the history of Barrow. | :00:59. | :01:05.

Today a judge said the pensioner should not face | :01:16. | :01:18.
an immediate prison term because this had been | :01:19. | :01:20.
Our chief reporter, Dave Guest, is at Liverpool Crown Court and, | :01:21. | :01:29.
Dave, this was a very moving story wasn't it? | :01:30. | :01:36.
It was indeed. This is the story of a devoted couple, they have been | :01:37. | :01:40.
devoted for more than 65 years. A fiercely independent couple who'd | :01:41. | :01:46.
refused offers of help from social services because they wanted to look | :01:47. | :01:48.
after one another. But that became increasingly hard | :01:49. | :01:50.
as 88-year-old Olive's mental She became obsessed with the notion | :01:51. | :01:53.
she'd been forced into care. She begged her husband to kill her | :01:54. | :01:56.
rather than let that happen. But today a judge here decided | :01:57. | :01:59.
the frail pensioner should He emerged from court | :02:00. | :02:05.
looking bewildered. He'd admitted trying | :02:06. | :02:15.
to beat his beloved wife, Olive, But a judge had decided | :02:16. | :02:17.
he could now go home. Denver and Olive were totally | :02:18. | :02:21.
devoted to one another. Her mental health deteriorated | :02:22. | :02:23.
and he suffered depression. Olive became convinced | :02:24. | :02:27.
she would be forced into a hospital. She begged her husband | :02:28. | :02:29.
to take her life. Liverpool Crown Court was told that | :02:30. | :02:32.
in February, at their home in Warrington, | :02:33. | :02:35.
he tried to do that He immediately phoned his son | :02:36. | :02:42.
to say what he had done. He admitted attempted | :02:43. | :02:47.
murder and could have expected a jail term | :02:48. | :03:02.
when he faced a judge in Liverpool. had recovered from her | :03:03. | :03:08.
injuries and was now living happily in the place where she | :03:09. | :03:12.
was being cared for. She'd forgiven her husband | :03:13. | :03:14.
and wanted them to be reunited. Judge Clement Goldstone told | :03:15. | :03:17.
Mr Beddows, "That is indeed However, he said he had | :03:18. | :03:21.
decided an immediate prison term was not appropriate, | :03:22. | :03:33.
instead, suspending a two-year Did Mr Beddows have anything to say | :03:34. | :03:35.
as he left court today? Now, he left it without seeing | :03:36. | :03:54.
anything, but this afternoon, the family issued a statement saying, | :03:55. | :03:58.
that's the past 12 months have been particularly difficult for them as | :03:59. | :04:01.
they have tried to cope with her mother's mental health problems. | :04:02. | :04:04.
Problems at a doctrine fully diagnose as yet, they say. They are | :04:05. | :04:09.
now supporting their mum and dad and have asked for privacy so that they | :04:10. | :04:13.
can get on with coming to terms with the situation they face. Meanwhile, | :04:14. | :04:19.
the police issued a statement this afternoon in which they expressed | :04:20. | :04:22.
their sadness about this case and said they hoped this family would be | :04:23. | :04:27.
able to move on and pit behind the events of this heartbreaking day in | :04:28. | :04:28.
February 20 17. Next tonight, the use of foodbanks | :04:29. | :04:36.
across the North West is continuing to rise, according to | :04:37. | :04:41.
new figures released today. The Trussell Trust says 14,000 more | :04:42. | :04:44.
people turned to food banks for help Greater Manchester saw the biggest | :04:45. | :04:47.
rise in the use of foodbanks with 8,000 more three day food packs | :04:48. | :04:54.
given out - a total And people in Merseyside were issued | :04:55. | :04:57.
with the most emergency supplies - But what could be causing the rise | :04:58. | :05:02.
in the use of foodbanks? Around a decade ago, | :05:03. | :05:14.
food banks were hardly heard of. Now they're needed more than ever - | :05:15. | :05:18.
particularly in our region They are under a lot of pressure | :05:19. | :05:30.
because there has been an increase in the need for food banks. Even | :05:31. | :05:34.
hard-working families, people that aren't on benefits. People are | :05:35. | :05:42.
really struggling. They have to use a food bank but they don't want | :05:43. | :05:45.
anyone to know about it. It can be a bit embarrassing, as well. | :05:46. | :05:47.
Tori was struggling when she went to her local food bank at page Moss | :05:48. | :05:50.
Her life has turned around after she ended up | :05:51. | :05:54.
I went to the interview and felt really good about it and when I got | :05:55. | :06:05.
the phone call I was like, yes! I was so happy. And I have made loads | :06:06. | :06:10.
of good friends. Everyone is really good there, they are helping me out, | :06:11. | :06:14.
everyone has each other's back. It is great to help other people. | :06:15. | :06:16.
Now Tori helps others suffering from food poverty in Merseyside, | :06:17. | :06:19.
one of the areas most in need of foodbanks. | :06:20. | :06:26.
It's fantastic work what they do. I think these people deserve a medal. | :06:27. | :06:35.
This full bank has been going for five years. The referrals aren't | :06:36. | :06:38.
slowing down. The Knowsley Foodbank is a franchise | :06:39. | :06:40.
of the Trussell Trust charity - and they say the implementation | :06:41. | :06:43.
of a new benefits system, Universal Credit, is the main | :06:44. | :06:45.
catalyst for the rise in people The impact of universal credit, the | :06:46. | :07:00.
bedroom tax, things like that, I think they are trying to stop | :07:01. | :07:04.
people's benefit for any reason, people on a low-wage, minimum wage, | :07:05. | :07:13.
what do they do? If they need tyres, what do they do, pick tyres on the | :07:14. | :07:17.
car or buy food? These are the choices people face on a day-to-day | :07:18. | :07:18.
basis. In a statement the Deparment | :07:19. | :07:24.
for Work Pensions has for food bank use are complex, | :07:25. | :07:28.
so can't be linked to any one issue. "There are now record | :07:29. | :07:33.
numbers of people in work, and under Universal Credit people | :07:34. | :07:35.
are moving into work faster and staying in work longer | :07:36. | :07:37.
than under the old system." Whatever the reasons, | :07:38. | :07:40.
it seems foodbanks are a lifeline I don't know where I would be now if | :07:41. | :07:42.
it wasn't for the feedback. The family of a former | :07:43. | :07:50.
Royal Navy officer - who was killed as he tried | :07:51. | :07:52.
to stop his car being stolen in Manchester - | :07:53. | :07:55.
have described him as the most Mike Samwell was found | :07:56. | :07:57.
with serious injuries outside his house in Chorlton | :07:58. | :08:13.
early on Sunday. In a statement, his family said | :08:14. | :08:15.
they'd been deeply touched A 21-year-old man - | :08:16. | :08:17.
who was being questioned on suspicion of murder - | :08:18. | :08:20.
has been released on bail. A group of squatters climbed onto | :08:21. | :08:30.
the roof of a building after being told to leave. | :08:31. | :08:32.
Police investigating the attempted rape of a dog walker in Salford - | :08:33. | :08:35.
who had a knife held to her throat - have released an image of a man | :08:36. | :08:39.
The woman, who's in her 30s, managed to fight off the attacker | :08:40. | :08:43.
on waste land in Walkden on Sunday evening. | :08:44. | :08:45.
It's understood the former Government minister - | :08:46. | :08:47.
and Wirral West MP - Esther McVey has been short listed | :08:48. | :08:50.
to stand for election in Tatton to succeed George Osborne. | :08:51. | :08:54.
She lost her seat at the last general election. | :08:55. | :08:56.
Tatton Conservatives will choose their candidate tomorrow. | :08:57. | :09:01.
Karen Danczuk, the former wife of Rochdale MP | :09:02. | :09:05.
Mrs Danczuk, who became famous for posting 'selfies' on social | :09:06. | :09:19.
media, is hoping to be chosen to stand for Labour in the marginal | :09:20. | :09:22.
People learnt who I were, and it has really helped immensely. | :09:23. | :09:27.
But at the same time, I don't want to be known | :09:28. | :09:30.
I was a councillor, I've been a businesswoman, I'm a mum, | :09:31. | :09:36.
Next week a little bit of history will be made - | :09:37. | :09:40.
Greater Manchester and the Liverpool City Region will elect | :09:41. | :09:42.
We heard from some of the candidates standing | :09:43. | :09:45.
Tonight, Kevin Fitzpatrick continues his journey | :09:46. | :09:48.
In just over a week, the people of the Liverpool city | :09:49. | :09:58.
region will get the chance to choose their first | :09:59. | :10:03.
The mayor will have significant powers over transport, | :10:04. | :10:06.
which could have cue transform the lives | :10:07. | :10:10.
Buses, tunnels, ferries, and reducing congestion. | :10:11. | :10:18.
I want something that is a true reflection | :10:19. | :10:23.
of what they have in London, as the Oyster card. | :10:24. | :10:27.
I want us to be able to use a walrus card, to get on a bus | :10:28. | :10:31.
to get on a train, you can top it up and go through the tunnel and | :10:32. | :10:35.
eventually have those Mersey tunnels free for users. | :10:36. | :10:37.
I'd be looking to encourage the carbon technology in | :10:38. | :10:39.
the city, looking to develop a circular | :10:40. | :10:41.
economy where resources are | :10:42. | :10:43.
used better and more efficiently so we have less waste in the city | :10:44. | :10:46.
region, huge opportunities, huge possibilities, and I think | :10:47. | :10:48.
something really positive for the city region. | :10:49. | :10:55.
People have been petitioning to get the tunnels free for so long, | :10:56. | :10:58.
I want to be the mayor that does that. | :10:59. | :11:04.
Or at least, have a ?10 the four residents of | :11:05. | :11:09.
For commuters, it is a big issue, and they think there is plenty to | :11:10. | :11:17.
I think the trains still need improving, because there are still | :11:18. | :11:30.
You need a plan B in place, like the ferry. | :11:31. | :11:36.
They had engine problems with this last week, | :11:37. | :11:38.
so then you come to get the ferry, it's not on. | :11:39. | :11:40.
So you're then on a replace the bus, but if they haven't | :11:41. | :11:43.
organised the replacement bus in time, the end up late for work. | :11:44. | :11:46.
The ferry is quite cheap in comparison, | :11:47. | :11:48.
for a monthly pass, or an annual pass, | :11:49. | :11:50.
it's really good value for | :11:51. | :11:51.
But certainly, the buses I found more expensive than that. | :11:52. | :11:59.
The city region mayor will be in charge of all transport, | :12:00. | :12:02.
That means private transport, said the | :12:03. | :12:04.
Mersey Mayor will decide the level of tolls | :12:05. | :12:06.
for the Mersey tunnels, he | :12:07. | :12:07.
or she will decide whether we have private or public owned bus | :12:08. | :12:10.
Really, basically, every transport response will table for | :12:11. | :12:15.
He or she will be all-powerful in that respect. | :12:16. | :12:20.
All the candidates say they are the best person to steer | :12:21. | :12:22.
Charting the right course on transport will be among the first | :12:23. | :12:26.
big tests for whoever is elected mayor. | :12:27. | :12:29.
And we'll hear from the Greater Manchester candidates | :12:30. | :12:31.
For a full list of all those standing - | :12:32. | :12:35.
in both the Greater Manchester and Liverpool City Region Mayoral | :12:36. | :12:39.
Barrow celebrates the 150th anniversary of its stocks. | :12:40. | :13:05.
And on target for promotion. The Blackpool football star is showing | :13:06. | :13:08.
off their talent to local schoolchildren. | :13:09. | :13:10.
The recovery of the River Irwell has been one of the biggest | :13:11. | :13:12.
environmental success stories of the last 30 years. | :13:13. | :13:17.
But a stretch from Rawtenstall to Manchester city centre | :13:18. | :13:19.
has been devastated by two pollution outbreaks in the last three weeks. | :13:20. | :13:22.
Countless fish and insects have died. | :13:23. | :13:24.
Environmentalists say it will take years for the ecosystem to recover. | :13:25. | :13:26.
It looks pristine and picturesque, the water | :13:27. | :13:31.
But this section of the Irwell at Burrs Country Park in Bury has | :13:32. | :13:37.
White icebergs of foam were discovered in the river | :13:38. | :13:42.
Just three weeks after what's believed to have been pesticide | :13:43. | :13:46.
Mike Duddy is from the Mersey Basin Rivers Trust. | :13:47. | :13:53.
When I started thinking about this, what are the moron tips these down | :13:54. | :14:02.
the drain? It is wiped out in high proportion of invertebrates in the | :14:03. | :14:06.
river, the second one wiped out whatever was left. This is a tray of | :14:07. | :14:17.
invertebrates, a sample taken from just to miles away, unaffected. It | :14:18. | :14:21.
is teeming with life. And this is the sample we took from the River | :14:22. | :14:27.
right behind us, not a single living thing left. No exaggeration. | :14:28. | :14:34.
the first polluted area, finding hundreds of dead | :14:35. | :14:37.
The water was littered with thousands, not exaggerating, of dead | :14:38. | :14:51.
crayfish. The river is clear, you can see the bottom, and there is | :14:52. | :14:54.
just dead animals everywhere. Because there are no insects in the | :14:55. | :14:59.
water here, there are no flies, no birds, every level of the ecosystem | :15:00. | :15:00.
has been affected. polluted by industrial waste | :15:01. | :15:08.
in the Industrial Revolution. But over the last 30 years, | :15:09. | :15:11.
it's been transformed, This latest pollution | :15:12. | :15:13.
is a massive setback. These invertebrates have a two-year | :15:14. | :15:28.
life cycle, so it will take a minimum of three years for the river | :15:29. | :15:33.
to get back to how it used to be. -- CE life cycle. | :15:34. | :15:40.
investigating both incidents and has taken samples for analysis. | :15:41. | :15:43.
It's asking for anyone with information to come forward | :15:44. | :15:45.
so that those who've destroyed this beautiful waterway | :15:46. | :15:47.
Four Sale Sharks players have been named in the tour of Argentina. | :15:48. | :15:55.
The inclusion of Denny Solomona has raised a few eyebrows | :15:56. | :16:02.
But there's also a call up for twins Tom and Ben Curry with coach | :16:03. | :16:08.
Eddie Jones saying that he's looking forward to working out | :16:09. | :16:10.
Denny Solomona controversialy switches codes in December, | :16:11. | :16:24.
to win his first Rugby union cap after being included in a 31 man | :16:25. | :16:29.
squad for the tour of Argentina He's one of four Sales Sharks players | :16:30. | :16:32.
to be named for the two test tour in June. | :16:33. | :16:39.
My mum text me, think graduation, I say, what are you on about? -- | :16:40. | :16:46.
saying congratulations. Denny Solomona Wing joining him | :16:47. | :16:49.
on the plane to South America will be Tom and Ben Curry - | :16:50. | :16:52.
they'll l be looking to claim a record of their own.no | :16:53. | :16:55.
identical pair of twins have ever played for | :16:56. | :16:58.
the national side before. Even Head Coach Eddie Jones may have | :16:59. | :17:00.
trouble separating hem.. It's a really exciting challenge, | :17:01. | :17:16.
fiercely. -- obviously. I'm really looking forward to working with | :17:17. | :17:17.
them. The younger players in the new look | :17:18. | :17:21.
squad could yet take the team to a new level - | :17:22. | :17:24.
centre Sam James is another who's come through the Academy at Sale | :17:25. | :17:27.
Sharks. Sale Sharks has a way | :17:28. | :17:34.
of producing a certain kind of player according to the England | :17:35. | :17:36.
set up - they''ll be aiming to show After a rapid decline from the top | :17:37. | :17:40.
flight to the bottom tier, things are finally starting to look | :17:41. | :17:49.
up for Blackpool Football Club. The Seasiders are pushing | :17:50. | :17:52.
for promotion via the League two play-offs despite ongoing disputes | :17:53. | :17:54.
between fans and the club's owners. With the tide finally be turning for | :17:55. | :18:00.
Blackpool? In just five years Blackpool fell | :18:01. | :18:13.
from the top of tree, in the Premier League, | :18:14. | :18:16.
to the bottom tier. Now though there are signs the club | :18:17. | :18:17.
could be heading back With two games left the Seasiders | :18:18. | :18:20.
are in the play offs. The players have been tremendous | :18:21. | :18:33.
this year. We brought the right players in, made them better, we're | :18:34. | :18:37.
not going to rest on what we have done and what we have achieved so | :18:38. | :18:40.
far, we are going to keep pushing and keep working hard. | :18:41. | :18:42.
Today manager and captain were visiting South Shore Academy | :18:43. | :18:44.
By Paul's commuter transport with thousands of people in the community | :18:45. | :19:01.
last year. The four times a week they are here. It's really nice that | :19:02. | :19:08.
they engage in the community and not just there to play football, because | :19:09. | :19:11.
of easily some people don't really like football. | :19:12. | :19:13.
There hasn't been much of a community spirit between fans | :19:14. | :19:16.
Who is your favourite player? We have to do our bit. We are trying on | :19:17. | :19:26.
the pitch and the survey 's activities of the page that can help | :19:27. | :19:29.
and we are trying to encourage more people to come back into the stadium | :19:30. | :19:36.
and watch the game. We are in good form. Momentum is a big word, | :19:37. | :19:38.
especially talking about the play-off, soulfully we will do the | :19:39. | :19:43.
job and get into the play-offs and then the momentum, fingers crossed, | :19:44. | :19:44.
will pit is in good stead. Getting out of this league will be | :19:45. | :19:47.
one almighty scramble. But Blackpool's end goal | :19:48. | :19:49.
is at least in sight. It would be great if they could do | :19:50. | :20:00.
it. After all the problems they have had, the infighting and the fans | :20:01. | :20:03.
being upset, if they could get promotion... | :20:04. | :20:10.
And it just shows how well he has done with them, for any money. And | :20:11. | :20:14.
if you help but Rovers are doing now, my team, they will do well to | :20:15. | :20:17.
stay in the championship. It is going to be a crucial few weeks of | :20:18. | :20:25.
luxury football. -- Lancashire football. | :20:26. | :20:34.
Now, it grew from a tiny rural hamlet into a huge industrial town, | :20:35. | :20:38.
famous around the world for his iron and steel and ships. We are talking, | :20:39. | :20:42.
of course, about Barrow in Furness in Cumbria. It is celebrating its | :20:43. | :20:46.
hundred and 50th anniversary of the port, which helped fuel its historic | :20:47. | :20:49.
growth. For a century and a half, | :20:50. | :20:50.
Barrow's heartbeat has been dictated These docks, originally | :20:51. | :20:53.
designed for the export of local iron | :20:54. | :20:57.
ore, fuelled much more. The industries that | :20:58. | :21:00.
would shape Barrow - iron ore, steelworks and, | :21:01. | :21:03.
most famously, shipbuilding. The Illustrious will be a sister | :21:04. | :21:07.
ship to the Ark Royal, and she is the largest vessel of any kind ever | :21:08. | :21:10.
to be launched from a Barrow yard. She stands today 16,000 | :21:11. | :21:13.
tonnes of steel. It really wouldn't be the town | :21:14. | :21:18.
that you see today, the thriving shipbuilding town, | :21:19. | :21:21.
if the docks system hadn't been put in place by the founding fathers | :21:22. | :21:24.
of the town. All the founding fathers had to do | :21:25. | :21:28.
was fill the gap between creating | :21:29. | :21:31.
Devonshire dock and Buccleuch dock. The Ramsden and Cavendish docks | :21:32. | :21:35.
would be added later. Well, I suppose you might say this | :21:36. | :21:41.
is where it all began. In September 1867, | :21:42. | :21:44.
when Barrow's first block, the Devonshire dock, opened, | :21:45. | :21:47.
this was the original entrance. But the shipyard would be | :21:48. | :21:55.
and still is a key industry. Oriana, 40,000 tonnes, | :21:56. | :22:00.
biggest liner ever built in England, will eventually start | :22:01. | :22:02.
a new era in Pacific ocean travel. Terry was an apprentice in the | :22:03. | :22:07.
shipyard in 1960. We had two Chilean destroyers | :22:08. | :22:13.
in the dock, or frigates, a conventional submarine, | :22:14. | :22:18.
and on Trafalgar Day 1960, the Queen launched the dreadnought, | :22:19. | :22:22.
the first nuclear submarine. May God bless her and | :22:23. | :22:28.
all who serve in her. You can imagine, it was quite busy. | :22:29. | :22:33.
Very busy, in fact. Today, the shipyard | :22:34. | :22:40.
continues to employ thousands, designing | :22:41. | :22:46.
and building the most advanced submarines in the world, | :22:47. | :22:48.
it and the port mutually dependent. It dominates in so many ways, | :22:49. | :22:55.
it dominates the skyline from all the vantage points | :22:56. | :22:58.
around the town, dominates in employment terms and economy, | :22:59. | :23:00.
but the port is very key to the work that | :23:01. | :23:04.
the shipyard does. The future appears set fair, | :23:05. | :23:09.
with the port playing a key role in serving the offshore energy | :23:10. | :23:12.
industry, the nuclear industry and No matter who you are, | :23:13. | :23:15.
you depend on the People earn money and they | :23:16. | :23:22.
spend it in the town. If we don't have that, | :23:23. | :23:28.
well, we are snookered. Rugby league now. The champions draw | :23:29. | :23:49.
is made as we speak, it has just been made, we have redrawn now. | :23:50. | :24:07.
That has just come in now. Hot off the press. | :24:08. | :24:19.
But someone that does extremely well is Diane. Reason we have seen snow | :24:20. | :24:27.
in some parts, haven't we? Four seasons in one day. Good | :24:28. | :24:42.
evening. We told you it would be very cold and it would be very raw, | :24:43. | :24:46.
and that is exactly what it turned out to be. Watch the wind arrows, | :24:47. | :24:50.
tomorrow, they are lighter and over the next few days will start to | :24:51. | :24:53.
change direction, so things will become less cold do Thursday and | :24:54. | :24:58.
Friday. Over the weekend, we are still not entirely confident about | :24:59. | :25:00.
what will happen, and of course, we have a bank holiday this weekend. It | :25:01. | :25:05.
looks like things will be milder, that is the important thing. As for | :25:06. | :25:08.
rain, and excite the tail end of Sunday could bring some rain. Some | :25:09. | :25:16.
fantastic shot of hail, CD 20p piece in comparison to hail. The size of | :25:17. | :25:24.
the hail. If you're the cat this, the clouds seem to be -- shower soon | :25:25. | :25:31.
to be moving away, this is how it turned out. Showers hoarding up of | :25:32. | :25:37.
the afternoon, and is an irreverent. Not just rain, we have had hail | :25:38. | :25:46.
reported. As you go through the night, they will die away, by nine | :25:47. | :25:50.
or ten o'clock, the picture will be drier. And as clear skies, that is | :25:51. | :25:55.
where the temperature is will start to really fall down. At about 1% of | :25:56. | :26:00.
the moon visible tonight, so you can see more of the sky. If you are | :26:01. | :26:07.
stargazing, it will be really cold. Temperatures down to to in town and | :26:08. | :26:11.
city, rural, -2 minus three. Soak could be some frost. More blue sky | :26:12. | :26:23.
tomorrow, the sun up at 540, so almost 15 hours of daylight. | :26:24. | :26:27.
Tomorrow, I think you'll see more in the way of sunshine. The showers are | :26:28. | :26:30.
still in the mix, but less frequent and widespread. You can see them | :26:31. | :26:34.
moving into the Pennine areas, running down the spine of the | :26:35. | :26:37.
country, towards the Peak District as well. But for most of us, it | :26:38. | :26:41.
doesn't look too bad. Remember, the wind is cold and raw, so we are | :26:42. | :26:45.
talking about a wind of 15 miles an hour just about anywhere really. | :26:46. | :26:51.
Fairly gusty, chilly, raw, the numbers on the chart your maximum | :26:52. | :26:53.
temperatures but I think with the wind chill, it will feel colder than | :26:54. | :26:57.
that. If you stay away from the showers, you will do pretty well. In | :26:58. | :27:01.
terms of tomorrow night, again, chilly but not as bad. Through the | :27:02. | :27:06.
next couple of days, the high-pressure successor to itself, | :27:07. | :27:10.
change in wind direction, but temperatures will creep back up. | :27:11. | :27:16.
Somebody on twitter has said, they're questioning your type | :27:17. | :27:29.
choice. -- tie choice. He thinks he should have -- I should have vetted | :27:30. | :27:36.
it first. Though he does say he's not a sartorial benchmark. But we | :27:37. | :27:42.
always like your feedback. Bank for watching, good night. | :27:43. | :27:46. |
