The mother of an unarmed man who was shot dead by police

:00:13.:00:17.

today shouted "murderer" at the officer who

:00:18.:00:19.

Anthony Grainger's mother reacted when the officer told

:00:20.:00:27.

a public inquiry he'd do the same again.

:00:28.:00:29.

Our Social Affairs Correspondent Clare Fallon was at the hearing.

:00:30.:00:32.

Giving evidence from behind a curtain, the police officer who is

:00:33.:00:37.

only known as Q9, said that when he pulled the trigger

:00:38.:00:40.

he believed Anthony Grainger had a gun and he

:00:41.:00:42.

thought his colleagues were in extreme danger.

:00:43.:00:44.

He also said that in the same situation he would do the same

:00:45.:00:47.

That provoked an angry response from Anthony Grainger's mother.

:00:48.:00:53.

She shouted out, murder, that's what you are.

:00:54.:00:58.

Everyone in this court knows you murdered my son.

:00:59.:01:02.

Also in court today listening to the evidence was

:01:03.:01:04.

She gave me her response after the hearing.

:01:05.:01:11.

Even though it has been established that the intelligence

:01:12.:01:18.

was wildly inaccurate, and those were the words used,

:01:19.:01:20.

he still says he would do it again, knowing he acted on

:01:21.:01:23.

When Anthony Grainger was shot dead in

:01:24.:01:30.

2012 in a Cheshire car park, he was being followed

:01:31.:01:33.

by armed police from the

:01:34.:01:37.

Greater Manchester force who were trying to stop a suspected

:01:38.:01:39.

Since then, we have discovered that Anthony Grainger was unharmed and

:01:40.:01:45.

that there were problems with the police intelligence.

:01:46.:01:49.

This public enquiry into his death will carry on hearing

:01:50.:01:59.

evidence in public until the end of this month.

:02:00.:02:01.

We will likely get the findings later this year.

:02:02.:02:07.

There are fears for 3,000 Co-Op Bank jobs tonight

:02:08.:02:10.

after the Co-Op Group announced it has written-off its 20% stake

:02:11.:02:13.

The bank employs staff in Manchester, Stockport

:02:14.:02:18.

and Skelmersdale, as Naomi Cornwell reports.

:02:19.:02:20.

Business as usual was the message from the Co-op headquarters

:02:21.:02:25.

in Manchester today after the group announced a pretax

:02:26.:02:27.

It grew from the consumer societies started by

:02:28.:02:35.

the Rochdale Pioneers, with the aim of creating an ethical

:02:36.:02:37.

But in recent years, the Co-op Bank has struggled to survive.

:02:38.:02:41.

The bank's impact is disappointing on the group.

:02:42.:02:49.

We have taken a prudent decision to write down our value in the bank.

:02:50.:02:52.

It does not reflect the great year the Co-op has had.

:02:53.:02:55.

division are all doing well with strong sales.

:02:56.:02:59.

The bank was part of that group, but was rescued by US investors

:03:00.:03:02.

Since then, the Co-op Group has only been a minority shareholder,

:03:03.:03:06.

And now it's reduced the value of that stake

:03:07.:03:15.

The bank has been looking for buyers since February.

:03:16.:03:19.

Last month the BBC revealed Bank of England contingency plans

:03:20.:03:25.

to ensure the "orderly failure" of the Co-op Bank are well advanced.

:03:26.:03:28.

Its Chief Executive insists there is real value in its ethical

:03:29.:03:30.

position and customer relationships which set it apart and provide

:03:31.:03:33.

strong future potential, saying they are focused

:03:34.:03:34.

on the interests of all our stakeholders.

:03:35.:03:36.

If it collapsed, customers would be protected.

:03:37.:03:40.

But the Unite union, which represents some

:03:41.:03:45.

of the bank workers, says it is concerned for their future.

:03:46.:03:48.

A collapse would be devastating for bank workers in Manchester

:03:49.:03:50.

There are 4,500 people employed by the Co-operative Bank.

:03:51.:03:59.

There would be a wider concern about the contagion

:04:00.:04:05.

that would be generated by the collapse of a major UK banks.

:04:06.:04:08.

The bank says there could be an announcement

:04:09.:04:10.

A prison officer is being treated in hospital tonight

:04:11.:04:16.

after being slashed across the throat by an inmate

:04:17.:04:22.

at the privately-run Altcourse Prison in Liverpool.

:04:23.:04:24.

Let's get the latest from our Merseyside Reporter Andy Gill

:04:25.:04:26.

What more can you tell us about this attack?

:04:27.:04:31.

We understand the attack happened yesterday afternoon in the jail's

:04:32.:04:36.

prisoner separation unit and the alleged assailant had been

:04:37.:04:38.

The inmate said to be involved was on remand

:04:39.:04:44.

The officer was slashed with a razor type weapon and was taken

:04:45.:04:52.

to hospital where was said to be in a stable condition.

:04:53.:04:57.

Other prison officers nearby quickly subdued the alleged attacker.

:04:58.:05:03.

The director of the prison says they continue to support

:05:04.:05:05.

This isn't the first time the prison has been at the centre

:05:06.:05:10.

No, in October 2014 an inspection found that violence was rising

:05:11.:05:19.

sharply because of the availability of psychoactive drugs

:05:20.:05:20.

The same report said the prison was providing good training,

:05:21.:05:25.

In 2015, there were 414 assaults here, down from the previous year

:05:26.:05:33.

but still a high figure relative to many other jails in the country.

:05:34.:05:36.

In August last year the jail was put in lock down for two days

:05:37.:05:40.

after knives and illicit drugs were found in packages on the roof

:05:41.:05:43.

which people had tried to throw over the walls.

:05:44.:05:49.

A police investigation into the attack on the prison

:05:50.:05:51.

Tonight a spokesman for G4S who run Altcourse said There is no place

:05:52.:06:04.

in our prison community for violent behaviour and we will always work

:06:05.:06:07.

with the police to push for the strongest possible sanctions

:06:08.:06:09.

in court against prisoners who undermine safety.

:06:10.:06:13.

Zoo inspectors say they're impressed and highly

:06:14.:06:20.

encouraged by improvements at the South Lakes Safari Zoo.

:06:21.:06:23.

A licence for the previous owner David Gill was refused last month

:06:24.:06:26.

after a report revealed shocking failings over animal welfare.

:06:27.:06:28.

Inspectors are now recommending the Cumbria Zoo Company should be

:06:29.:06:30.

The Rail Minister, Lancashire MP Paul Maynard,

:06:31.:06:37.

has called on the RMT Union to continue talks to avert

:06:38.:06:40.

Guards working for Merseyrail and Northern will walk out on Saturday

:06:41.:06:44.

in a dispute over the introduction of driver-only operated trains.

:06:45.:06:46.

The union denies it's specifically targeted the Grand National.

:06:47.:06:52.

We apologise for any disruption caused.

:06:53.:06:57.

They will get to Aintree and use alternative methods.

:06:58.:06:59.

This is about safety on trains going into

:07:00.:07:03.

the next 20 or 30 years in Merseyside and across the north of

:07:04.:07:06.

It is much more important than one day at Aintree.

:07:07.:07:11.

The Grand National Meeting began at Aintree today.

:07:12.:07:13.

It's 40 years since Southport-trained Red Rum

:07:14.:07:15.

And Stuart Pollitt has been looking back through the archives.

:07:16.:07:25.

The horse with the gammy leg, trained by a taxi driver on the

:07:26.:07:31.

But by 1977, Red Rum had already won the National

:07:32.:07:35.

twice and finished runner up on another two occasions.

:07:36.:07:37.

Yet, it was this race which sealed his spot in history.

:07:38.:07:43.

Riding Red Rum that day was Tommy Stack.

:07:44.:07:52.

To find him 40 years on, you need to to come here to Tipperary, where

:07:53.:07:56.

It's only like yesterday looking back at it.

:07:57.:08:07.

Tommy rode Red Rum more than 40 times, but this was his

:08:08.:08:10.

You could hear the crowd and everything else.

:08:11.:08:14.

It is 40 years since Red Rum ran down here for the

:08:15.:08:33.

final time, but the impact the horse made on this course

:08:34.:08:35.

I take tours around the race course and I always point out

:08:36.:08:40.

that this horse is who you've got to thank for Aintree's existence today.

:08:41.:08:51.

Every week I get a letter in or somebody in to sign photographs

:08:52.:08:55.

There will never be a horse like him again.

:08:56.:08:58.

Red Rum is buried beside the winning post.

:08:59.:09:00.

We will have the forecast in just a minute.

:09:01.:09:07.

In Super League, Wigan were beaten at home tonight

:09:08.:09:09.

by the early-season leaders Castleford.

:09:10.:09:11.

The Warriors ran in two tries as they were beaten 27-10.

:09:12.:09:13.

Morgan Escere crossed for both touchdowns

:09:14.:09:15.

for the defending champions who were without nine

:09:16.:09:17.

Having won their first four matches - Wigan are now

:09:18.:09:20.

That does it from me. Here is the weather forecast.

:09:21.:09:28.

Sunshine was in short supply for many of us today, but it

:09:29.:09:32.

was around first thing in the morning in parts of Lancashire.

:09:33.:09:35.

The Weather Watcher picture coming in from Ian look

:09:36.:09:37.

For most of us, it was a lot of cloud cover -

:09:38.:09:41.

That is because of the north-westerly air flow,

:09:42.:09:44.

feeding cloud as it comes in across the sea.

:09:45.:09:46.

Over the next couple of days, a nice change in that wind direction

:09:47.:09:49.

With an area of high pressure keeping the weather

:09:50.:09:53.

front out of the way, there is room for a nice

:09:54.:09:56.

At the moment, we are still under the cloud cover and

:09:57.:09:59.

that is how we stay all the way through the night.

:10:00.:10:02.

I mean, all the way through the night.

:10:03.:10:04.

Most places just blanket cloud cover.

:10:05.:10:07.

Temperatures will be up in the overnight period.

:10:08.:10:09.

When you get up tomorrow morning, it is a little bit of a

:10:10.:10:14.

Over those high level routes, the high level could support

:10:15.:10:17.

tiny spot of drizzle here and there but hardly even

:10:18.:10:20.

For most of us, a repeat of this morning with lots of cloud.

:10:21.:10:24.

With a change in wind direction through the afternoon,

:10:25.:10:27.

You can see the sunshine gradually starting to work its way through.

:10:28.:10:31.

Much brighter skies will start to appear.

:10:32.:10:33.

It is coming in late in the day so it can't

:10:34.:10:35.

really influence the temperatures too much.

:10:36.:10:37.

After that, that is when start to see a significant change in

:10:38.:10:42.

The brighter skies will start coming through.

:10:43.:10:44.

If you're going racing tomorrow, I imagine for The Ladies' Day

:10:45.:10:47.

temperatures of around 13 Celsius with that late

:10:48.:10:49.

If I leave you with the outlook as we go through the next couple

:10:50.:10:55.

of days, the weekend looks an awful lot better.

:10:56.:10:57.

to rise into the weekend. We'll see 22 Celsius on Sunday.

:10:58.:11:07.

Hello. There was some warm sunshine around today, but it's set to get

:11:08.:11:14.

even warmer this weekend. 18 Celsius in London this afternoon. This was

:11:15.:11:18.

the scene in Chiswick, much quieter than it was on Sunday for the boat

:11:19.:11:23.

race. Under the cloud for example here in Cumbria, temperatures

:11:24.:11:25.

struggled to make double figures. Through the night we're going to

:11:26.:11:29.

hang onto a lot of cloud across north-west England, North Wales,

:11:30.:11:32.

Northern Ireland and western Scotland, where there will be a bit

:11:33.:11:36.

of drizzle on the breeze. Zero skies across many southern and eastern

:11:37.:11:38.

parts of England, together with eastern Scotland and in the

:11:39.:11:41.

countryside again, temperatures won't be far away from freezing.

:11:42.:11:46.

Just briefly, at the end of the night, because it will warm up in

:11:47.:11:49.

the sunshine. That's why we have the best of the early sunshine. The

:11:50.:11:52.

cloud will break up across Wales, the Midlands and North West England.

:11:53.:11:58.

We may hang onto more cloud in Northern Ireland and western

:11:59.:12:00.

Scotland will

:12:01.:12:02.
