Our headlines tonight: for the news where you are. | :00:09. | :00:11.
Bail denied for a jailed Taunton marine. | :00:12. | :00:14.
Alexander Blackman was convicted of the murder of a Taliban | :00:15. | :00:17.
He's now trying to appeal against the conviction. | :00:18. | :00:22.
We're out on the streets of Gloucester as police crack down | :00:23. | :00:25.
Temperatures are dropping overnight tonight but will there be any snow | :00:26. | :00:38.
in the Christmas forecast? I will have more details later on. | :00:39. | :00:41.
Former royal marine Alexander Blackman from Taunton | :00:42. | :00:43.
was jailed for the murder of a Taliban fighter in 2011 | :00:44. | :00:46.
Today he was refused bail ahead of a new challenge to his conviction | :00:47. | :00:52.
at the Appeal Court, which will be heard in the new year. | :00:53. | :00:56.
Our Somerset correspondent Clinton Rogers has this report. | :00:57. | :01:00.
Surrounded by vocal support, Alexander Blackman's wife walked | :01:01. | :01:06.
into the Court of Appeal with high hopes her husband would be | :01:07. | :01:09.
Two hours later she emerged disappointed but still hopeful | :01:10. | :01:16.
We must remember that earlier this month, the Criminal Case's Review | :01:17. | :01:21.
Commission decided to refer the case back to the Appeal Courts. | :01:22. | :01:27.
And this is the most important step towards | :01:28. | :01:29.
getting his conviction and sentence overturned. | :01:30. | :01:34.
Blackman's legal team had applied for bail pending that hearing, | :01:35. | :01:37.
which could be as soon as late January, but we now know that until | :01:38. | :01:41.
it is heard, the former Royal Marine sergeant will stay | :01:42. | :01:44.
In his home town of Taunton, that was a decision | :01:45. | :01:50.
Absolutely, should have been allowed out for Christmas. | :01:51. | :01:54.
To have had bail on this at this stage would presume the | :01:55. | :01:59.
At this stage, I don't think you can do that. | :02:00. | :02:04.
Truly, truly disgusting, I feel sorry for his family. | :02:05. | :02:06.
However, an MP who has been part of the campaign of support | :02:07. | :02:12.
for Marine A and has visited him several times in prison, | :02:13. | :02:16.
says Blackman will not be too disillusioned. | :02:17. | :02:20.
He will go to bed tonight, not entirely a happy man, he would | :02:21. | :02:24.
far rather be at home, but at least he knows in a few weeks this | :02:25. | :02:27.
We have to take the emotion out, I think. | :02:28. | :02:32.
Meanwhile, a former Royal Marine colonel | :02:33. | :02:33.
told me this afternoon that | :02:34. | :02:34.
unquestionably Blackman had made a mistake in shooting dead | :02:35. | :02:38.
the wounded Taliban insurgent, but others may need to take some | :02:39. | :02:42.
Yes, he has failed, but to an extent, the system has failed. | :02:43. | :02:48.
Did he know exactly what he could and could | :02:49. | :02:53.
If he didn't, then there is a failure in the system because we | :02:54. | :02:58.
And if he was under stress, as some of | :02:59. | :03:03.
the reports suggest, then the | :03:04. | :03:06.
system I think, should have picked him up and supported him before. | :03:07. | :03:11.
So Clare Blackman will be spending another Christmas | :03:12. | :03:13.
without her husband, but | :03:14. | :03:15.
with hopes 2017 might produce a more positive legal outcome. | :03:16. | :03:24.
A new service trying to reduce pressure on the Emergency Department | :03:25. | :03:27.
at Bristol Royal Infirmary has been suspended after a patient died. | :03:28. | :03:32.
David Birtwistle was 44 and leaves behind a wife and daughter. | :03:33. | :03:36.
In November, he went to the hospital and was assessed | :03:37. | :03:39.
Our health correspondent Matthew Hill told me what happened. | :03:40. | :03:48.
Well, we know David Birtwistle went to see his GP on November 10th | :03:49. | :03:53.
and then three days later, on the Sunday afternoon, | :03:54. | :03:55.
he was feeling breathless, so he went to this | :03:56. | :03:57.
Now this is a service essentially set up for... | :03:58. | :04:03.
You're seen by a health professional who decides whether you need | :04:04. | :04:06.
to see a GP there or to go on to Accident and Emergency. | :04:07. | :04:11.
And, in his case, he was treated, he was then discharged. | :04:12. | :04:15.
We've just this evening had a statement from his wife who says: | :04:16. | :04:21.
"David's death was a complete shock as he had been fit and well, | :04:22. | :04:24.
had no long-term medical complications or conditions. | :04:25. | :04:28.
The cause of death is still being investigated and we do not know | :04:29. | :04:31.
if the system at A E that day contributed to his death. | :04:32. | :04:35.
Dave was an amazing man, loved by all his family and friends | :04:36. | :04:38.
and his sudden death at such a young age has hit us very hard." | :04:39. | :04:43.
Now would the patient have died anyway, had | :04:44. | :04:45.
That is something which will be looked at by what's called | :04:46. | :04:49.
So it's an internal investigation set up | :04:50. | :04:52.
They're trying to find an expert from outside to give | :04:53. | :04:56.
But they are obviously taking it very seriously | :04:57. | :05:00.
We've had a statement from BrisDoc, the private company, | :05:01. | :05:04.
who say: "Our sincere condolences are with his family | :05:05. | :05:07.
and there's going to be a thorough investigation." | :05:08. | :05:10.
It was because of the rise in demand on A E. | :05:11. | :05:17.
A 5% rise there in the last year or so, and that meant | :05:18. | :05:20.
that they really want to prioritise the sickest patients | :05:21. | :05:23.
to make sure they get seen by the emergency | :05:24. | :05:25.
And patients who don't really need to be seen there, | :05:26. | :05:28.
about a third of the patients don't need to go there, are seen by GPs | :05:29. | :05:32.
So what effect will closing the scheme have on A E? | :05:33. | :05:36.
NHS England had it as an initiative because they're worried | :05:37. | :05:40.
about the winter, the Christmas approaching us, | :05:41. | :05:42.
So no doubt it will cause more pressure there in the department. | :05:43. | :05:48.
The number of people begging on the streets of Gloucester has | :05:49. | :05:54.
been cut dramatically after a new campaign. | :05:55. | :05:56.
It's helped nearly 40 people, but has also seen so-called | :05:57. | :05:59.
"professional beggars" arrested, who are on benefits | :06:00. | :06:02.
Here's our Gloucesteshire reporter, Steve Knibbs. | :06:03. | :06:07.
You've got your hat out with money in it. | :06:08. | :06:09.
Since the summer the new team tackling begging and homelessness | :06:10. | :06:11.
in the city have got to know everyone on the streets. | :06:12. | :06:14.
You have a room down there waiting right now. | :06:15. | :06:17.
They know this man's story well, this morning | :06:18. | :06:18.
but has once again refused it, preferring to beg | :06:19. | :06:22.
Not nice to be at the stage of | :06:23. | :06:26.
enforcing action against people, but | :06:27. | :06:27.
that is what will happen if people continue to make | :06:28. | :06:29.
the choice to beg to feed their | :06:30. | :06:32.
And that would mean a criminal behaviour order banning him | :06:33. | :06:36.
And it wasn't long before the team caught someone with an order, | :06:37. | :06:43.
who they said had breached it for the third time. | :06:44. | :06:46.
The man was given the order originally for persistently begging, | :06:47. | :06:49.
despite having accommodation and receiving benefits. | :06:50. | :06:51.
It is difficult because there are different profiles | :06:52. | :06:53.
There's a small number who are genuinely homeless | :06:54. | :06:56.
and genuinely in need and vulnerable. | :06:57. | :07:01.
Many homeless people have been found a place to live and there was good | :07:02. | :07:05.
We may have a private landlord who is willing to take you. | :07:06. | :07:10.
As soon as I get my flat in the New Year, my life | :07:11. | :07:13.
will change dramatically for the better. | :07:14. | :07:22.
It has been a long and delicate job to get this far and some | :07:23. | :07:25.
but it's though that leaves just three people sleeping rough | :07:26. | :07:28.
on the city's streets over Christmas. | :07:29. | :07:30.
Well, tonight it's been announced that Bristol is to get ?2.5 million | :07:31. | :07:33.
The city's mayor Marvin Rees welcomed the cash, saying it will be | :07:34. | :07:36.
spent on rough sleepers and stopping people becoming homeless | :07:37. | :07:39.
Terry Brain was a Bristol animator who helped create characters | :07:40. | :07:46.
including Shaun the Sheep and the 1980s series The Trap Door. | :07:47. | :07:50.
Terry died earlier this year and wasn't able to bring | :07:51. | :07:53.
a collection of stories he called Weirdy Rhymes to the screen. | :07:54. | :07:56.
Well, now his son is on a mission to finish his father's work. | :07:57. | :07:59.
It was one of the most-watched children's animations of its time. | :08:00. | :08:09.
Trap Door was broadcast across the world and made by Dave's dad. | :08:10. | :08:15.
This is what our house was like when we were growing up. | :08:16. | :08:18.
It was just like this all the way through to the back room. | :08:19. | :08:21.
Terry Brain's Plasticine characters were famous. | :08:22. | :08:23.
It was weird, because to me it was just what your dad did. | :08:24. | :08:27.
But in school, I felt like a celebrity because everyone | :08:28. | :08:29.
was like, "Your dad did Trap Door, wow, amazing!" | :08:30. | :08:32.
Terry would also make up nursery rhymes for his children and always | :08:33. | :08:39.
said he wanted to bring those characters to life. | :08:40. | :08:43.
He was working on The Were-Rabbit, Shaun | :08:44. | :08:48.
And then, he was diagnosed with cancer. | :08:49. | :08:53.
It started looking like things weren't looking so good. | :08:54. | :08:56.
But we thought we had a few months to get these finished | :08:57. | :09:00.
and then the next day he was gone, sadly. | :09:01. | :09:03.
So, the job of finally making Weirdy Rhymes is one for his son. | :09:04. | :09:09.
The day before he passed, he said, "I can't believe I'm | :09:10. | :09:12.
about to kick the bucket and you're going to finish these projects | :09:13. | :09:16.
for me, become millionaires and live that fancy house | :09:17. | :09:18.
30 years in the making, these characters are about to finally | :09:19. | :09:24.
It is just a shame the man who created them isn't here to | :09:25. | :09:30.
That's all from us. I'll leave you with the weather. | :09:31. | :09:38.
Hello, good evening. Temperatures are already starting to drop. We | :09:39. | :09:54.
have largely clear skies which sets us up originally started the day | :09:55. | :09:57.
tomorrow but a much improved Dion today. We should see more sunshine | :09:58. | :10:02.
and a largely dry day, some western parts could get some showers. | :10:03. | :10:06.
Temperatures will get close to freezing, particularly in rural | :10:07. | :10:10.
areas. I think with the light winds and the clear skies we will see some | :10:11. | :10:14.
list and some fog forming two. That could be slow to Korea in the | :10:15. | :10:18.
morning, I weave and that a good deal of sunshine and a lot more | :10:19. | :10:21.
sometime tomorrow compared with today. It may not be dry for | :10:22. | :10:24.
everyone, the further west you are, particularly in Somerset, we could | :10:25. | :10:31.
see one or two showers. Most of us should see sunshine. Temperatures | :10:32. | :10:34.
roughly where they should be for the time of year, up at around seven or | :10:35. | :10:39.
8 degrees. It does Town Moor mild as we head towards the Christmas | :10:40. | :10:44.
weekend. Friday you can expect some strong winds during the day, that is | :10:45. | :10:49.
storm Barbra. We will see the rain associated with that on Friday and | :10:50. | :10:54.
Saturday. Christmas Eve, dry with sunshine and we start to get mild | :10:55. | :10:58.
air rushing in as well. Christmas Day looks breezy, cloudy and very | :10:59. | :10:59.
mild. good for us. Mild by the time we | :11:00. | :11:00.
reach Christmas Day. Hello there, there is wet and very | :11:01. | :11:08.
windy weather on the way in the run-up to Christmas. The worst of | :11:09. | :11:11.
the weather to the northern half of the UK. We have a strengthening jet | :11:12. | :11:18.
out of North America that is propgating across the Atlantic. | :11:19. | :11:22.
Rushing our way. Picking up low pressure, deepening them, tracking | :11:23. | :11:25.
them to the north-west of Scotland, hence the wind and rain. Tonight, we | :11:26. | :11:30.
have gale force winds in the north-west of Scotland. Wintry | :11:31. | :11:33.
showers here. There is still come rain to clear from the south-east. | :11:34. | :11:37.
It will go. The skies will clear. We get patchy fog in the south-east of | :11:38. | :11:42.
England. Chilly where skies clear, particularly in the countryside, not | :11:43. | :11:45.
far away from freezing. Further north we keep the showers going | :11:46. | :11:46.
through | :11:47. | :11:47. |
