The end of an historic day We ask what Brexit means to us. | :00:08. | :00:13.
In Bridgwater they voted overwhelmingly to leave, | :00:14. | :00:16.
And tomorrow could be the warmest day of 2017 so far, someone in the | :00:17. | :00:37.
UK. I'll tell you what will happen in this region later in the | :00:38. | :00:39.
Nine months on from that crucial vote, we are officially | :00:40. | :00:43.
Here in the West 13 of our 19 council | :00:44. | :00:48.
areas, shown here in blue, voted out. | :00:49. | :00:51.
But dereference in our region was actually much closer than that | :00:52. | :00:54.
suggests, with 49.3% of people wanting to stay in the EU. | :00:55. | :00:59.
Nowhere was that clearer than some parts of Bristol and | :01:00. | :01:09.
Across the city of Bristol, fewer than 40% of people | :01:10. | :01:16.
In the Sedgemoor area of Somerset, that figure was more | :01:17. | :01:20.
Our political editor begins his report in Bridgwater. | :01:21. | :01:25.
All day the news has focused on one big | :01:26. | :01:28.
Here in Bridgwater in this pub, and out on the streets, | :01:29. | :01:34.
Last June more than 60% of people here voted to | :01:35. | :01:38.
In contrast to other parts of the West. | :01:39. | :01:46.
Brexit day in Bridgwater, where only one flag mattered. | :01:47. | :01:48.
The wind of change was blowing through the Somerset town. | :01:49. | :01:50.
In Bridgwater only one flag mattered. | :01:51. | :01:52.
Wind of change was blowing through the Somerset town. | :01:53. | :01:54.
Its population is a little older than average and | :01:55. | :01:56.
A partnership that works the best interests of the United Kingdom... | :01:57. | :02:01.
Nine months later the official start to Brexit filled | :02:02. | :02:03.
I didn't meet anybody who wanted to remain in | :02:04. | :02:06.
Theresa May is announcing Article 50. | :02:07. | :02:09.
I am looking forward to seeing what actually happens and how | :02:10. | :02:15.
I don't think it will make a great deal of difference, especially to | :02:16. | :02:25.
Time will tell of course who was right or | :02:26. | :02:33.
wrong but it is a big day in our history, yes. | :02:34. | :02:37.
Official predictions that it will cost Britain billions | :02:38. | :02:39.
This pub chain actually backed Brexit. | :02:40. | :02:46.
The announcement in Parliament put wary smiles and | :02:47. | :02:49.
to the faces of locals who campaigned for Leave. | :02:50. | :02:51.
I do think we finally there until it is | :02:52. | :02:57.
It will be a long time because I don't think anybody | :02:58. | :03:03.
realised how much we were entangled in the EU. | :03:04. | :03:08.
By contrast, many in Bristol believe we heading into | :03:09. | :03:11.
The city is home to two universities and people have | :03:12. | :03:16.
On a harbour ferry we met one the city's defiant remainders. | :03:17. | :03:23.
The argument coming from the Leavers is | :03:24. | :03:25.
They accuse us the Reamainers, of Project Fear, when they are peddling | :03:26. | :03:31.
fear about immigration and the idea that other people are controlling | :03:32. | :03:34.
It is nonsense, and that is putting it politely. | :03:35. | :03:50.
It is a fait accompli, we have to get on with it | :03:51. | :03:53.
Now the city of Bristol and the country must chart a | :03:54. | :03:58.
Well some EU citizens living here in the West have told us | :03:59. | :04:05.
Nothing will change immediately, but they still say they're | :04:06. | :04:08.
concerned about their rights and whether they will | :04:09. | :04:11.
Laura Jones has been finding out more. | :04:12. | :04:17.
Hometime - and a chance to relax and unwind together | :04:18. | :04:20.
For six-year-old twins Russell and Rex and little | :04:21. | :04:26.
another Wednesday afternoon, but for mum Phaeny, this historic | :04:27. | :04:31.
Phaeny is Greek, her husband is British | :04:32. | :04:35.
and they met whilst working in Germany. | :04:36. | :04:38.
Her three children were born in the UK, but as of today, | :04:39. | :04:41.
A lot of people think that if you are married to a British | :04:42. | :04:48.
national you are safe, and you are not. | :04:49. | :04:49.
When you sit down to apply for permanent | :04:50. | :04:54.
residence it is you and the Home Office. | :04:55. | :04:56.
This family exists like many others because of free movement and | :04:57. | :05:01.
it is not just a paragraph in a treaty, it is actually a real thing | :05:02. | :05:05.
that changes people's lives, and it is a good thing | :05:06. | :05:10.
and a progressive thing and it is where progressive | :05:11. | :05:13.
Phaeny isn't the only one who's scared. | :05:14. | :05:19.
Across the UK there are more than three million other EU nationals | :05:20. | :05:23.
who've made their lives in this country - and who never really | :05:24. | :05:27.
There are more than a million British people living in Europe. | :05:28. | :05:31.
Many have been here for decades, their lives completely | :05:32. | :05:37.
intertwined with life here - and the thought of that | :05:38. | :05:41.
Amongst them, John Shaw from north Somerset, | :05:42. | :05:42.
who has been campaigning hard for a fair deal for expats. | :05:43. | :05:45.
My concerns have always been about our loss of rights. | :05:46. | :05:52.
We have transferred pension rights from the UK. | :05:53. | :05:55.
Also health care, we live in France, Spain and Germany as we have health | :05:56. | :06:00.
care provided by the country in which we live. | :06:01. | :06:07.
Back here, other groups are working hard too. | :06:08. | :06:09.
This woman from Germany is one of the founders of the Bristol-based | :06:10. | :06:13.
People will be left hanging, they haven't | :06:14. | :06:24.
got the right documentation to prove that they are able to remain in the | :06:25. | :06:28.
They will not be able to rent flats or start jobs. | :06:29. | :06:38.
It is a puzzling time for this family. | :06:39. | :06:41.
Earlier I spoke to the Cotswold MP Geoffrey Clifton Brown who voted | :06:42. | :06:52.
to leave the EU and asked him if he was happy this day had come. | :06:53. | :06:58.
Now that we've triggered Article 50, there is, | :06:59. | :07:04.
as Theresa May said, no | :07:05. | :07:06.
We need to do the best possible negotiations we can for the | :07:07. | :07:13.
We don't have all the details yet, far from it, in fact. | :07:14. | :07:18.
What would you say to people who feel that we are taking a leap into | :07:19. | :07:21.
It is true that these negotiations are dependent on | :07:22. | :07:27.
I remain optimistic that, actually, it's very much in both sides' | :07:28. | :07:34.
interest that we come out of this process with a | :07:35. | :07:37.
After all, they sell more to us than we sell to | :07:38. | :07:41.
Therefore, a a lot of jobs, and a lot of businesses are | :07:42. | :07:47.
dependent on the trade they do with this country. | :07:48. | :07:49.
Pragmatically, it's in both side' interest, and I'm | :07:50. | :07:51.
confident we'll come out at the end of the day with a satisfactory | :07:52. | :07:54.
And Britain will then be open to the rest of the world, | :07:55. | :07:58.
seizing those opportunities in high-growth economies like Southeast | :07:59. | :08:01.
We have heard tonight from the Europeans | :08:02. | :08:05.
are living here in the | :08:06. | :08:06.
West Country, they are, understandably, a little bit | :08:07. | :08:09.
concerned about their future is here. | :08:10. | :08:12.
What assurances would you give them to make? | :08:13. | :08:15.
Well, as I said the other day, I think it's | :08:16. | :08:18.
inconceivable that those Europeans who are lawfully living here, who | :08:19. | :08:20.
are benefiting the country, after all, should not be allowed to | :08:21. | :08:23.
In order to check them out, we would have to have | :08:24. | :08:31.
I just do not think that would go through our | :08:32. | :08:36.
I think people living here lawfully can be reassured that | :08:37. | :08:39.
they will be allowed to continue living here, | :08:40. | :08:42.
it's just a question of | :08:43. | :08:44.
making sure our citizens in European countries | :08:45. | :08:46.
have the same rights as | :08:47. | :08:54.
Geoffrey Clifton Brown, thank you very much. | :08:55. | :08:55.
The wife of a former Somerset Royal Marine convicted | :08:56. | :09:00.
of shooting dead a wounded Taliban fighter has told us he has always | :09:01. | :09:03.
Alexander Blackman had his murder conviction reduced | :09:04. | :09:07.
to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility . | :09:08. | :09:09.
Today his wife told us it had been a long and difficult journey. | :09:10. | :09:12.
Blackman is expected to be freed from prison | :09:13. | :09:14.
The whole journey has been a bit of a roller-coaster. We've had some | :09:15. | :09:31.
winds along the way. We've had a lot more let downs and disappointments. | :09:32. | :09:35.
Those were the days when we wondered if we would get here. | :09:36. | :09:39.
The size and shape of the planned new Bristol arena could be scaled | :09:40. | :09:42.
back if the cost of building the venue ends up more than planned. | :09:43. | :09:45.
The City Council will decide next week whether to order a review | :09:46. | :09:48.
The authority is also looking to appoint a new contractor. | :09:49. | :09:56.
It could be the warmest day of 2017 so far tomorrow. | :09:57. | :10:05.
Perhaps not in our region, but well in the high teens. | :10:06. | :10:08.
Make the most of the mild weather, it will be cooler | :10:09. | :10:10.
This afternoon, into this evening we saw a frontal system trying | :10:11. | :10:19.
We've had bits and pieces, but if you head towards tomorrow | :10:20. | :10:27.
morning it's starting to push away again. | :10:28. | :10:29.
As we head towards breakfast we see she was becoming more confined | :10:30. | :10:36.
towards North and west of the region. | :10:37. | :10:38.
As we goes on the day it looks like we'll see cloud breaking, | :10:39. | :10:45.
Good spells of sunshine in the afternoon. | :10:46. | :10:48.
In the best of it ties of 17, possibly 18 Celsius. | :10:49. | :10:50.
Make the most of it it will be cooler on Friday with sunshine, | :10:51. | :10:54.
Here is Darren with your national forecast. | :10:55. | :11:03.
far. The outlook for the next few days, temperatures coming down a bit | :11:04. | :11:07.
but staying decent for this time of year. Here is Darren Bett with the | :11:08. | :11:08.
national weather. The warm air coming up on a | :11:09. | :11:18.
southerly breeze all the way from Iberia and across France into | :11:19. | :11:21.
England and Wales. To achieve the high temperatures we need to get | :11:22. | :11:24.
into some of this dryer air and sunshine. Even with the cloud today, | :11:25. | :11:30.
17 degrees. Not just about the temperatures, let's not forget there | :11:31. | :11:32.
is some rain around as | :11:33. | :11:33. |
