Our headlines tonight: policy? Join me on

:00:00.:00:20.

The 20-minute op changing men's lives.

:00:21.:00:21.

The treatment to cure a common prostate condition

:00:22.:00:21.

is being pioneered in the west and gives instant relief.

:00:22.:00:23.

I'm not getting up in the night, it's a complete transformation

:00:24.:00:32.

No strings attached - the puppet master from Somerset

:00:33.:00:35.

And tomorrow brings a mostly dry day, there will be some exceptions

:00:36.:00:48.

to that and I will detail those towards the end of the programme.

:00:49.:00:51.

A new treatment is being offered at Southmead Hospital in Bristol

:00:52.:00:54.

which could make a important difference to men's lives.

:00:55.:00:58.

It's called the UroLift and it's being used to help with patients

:00:59.:01:02.

who have benign enlargements of their prostates.

:01:03.:01:05.

The procedure takes only 20 minutes and it is cheaper

:01:06.:01:09.

Our Health Correspondent Matthew Hill reports.

:01:10.:01:15.

When I first had the problem, I noticed it seven or eight years ago,

:01:16.:01:20.

I couldn't pee at all and when the doctor

:01:21.:01:23.

He said it sounded like you was in agony.

:01:24.:01:29.

He said it sounded like you are in agony.

:01:30.:01:34.

Chris Monkton was shocked to discover he was suffering from BHP.

:01:35.:01:38.

It's a condition which causes the prostate to grow

:01:39.:01:40.

Until now, the only solution has been to take medication.

:01:41.:01:44.

If that doesn't work, then you could be facing major surgery.

:01:45.:01:47.

But now Chris has been offered another option.

:01:48.:01:49.

A project at Southmead Hospital is offering a new treatment

:01:50.:01:56.

And the best thing about it is that it's not particularly invasive

:01:57.:02:00.

It's a bit like pulling apart a pair of curtains.

:02:01.:02:04.

Permanent implants are put in place to hold the excess tissue away,

:02:05.:02:07.

That's the tube that carries urine from the bladder.

:02:08.:02:10.

There's no need for a general anaesthetic or an overnight stay.

:02:11.:02:18.

It will reduce those symptoms of difficulty being, slow flow,

:02:19.:02:24.

It will reduce those symptoms of difficulty peeing, slow flow,

:02:25.:02:30.

having to pee frequently to empty the bladder

:02:31.:02:33.

Until recently this operation has only been available privately,

:02:34.:02:37.

but recently twelve patients have received it at Southmead Hospital

:02:38.:02:40.

as part of an evaluation trial and it very much depends

:02:41.:02:42.

on where you live as to whether you may get it.

:02:43.:02:48.

In Gloucestershire and South Gloucestershire, a 10-patient

:02:49.:02:50.

In Somerset there are early discussions to start a trial at

:02:51.:02:56.

There are no plans for the procedure at Bath's Royal United

:02:57.:03:02.

a 10-patient trial was completed at Salisbury Hospital on 24th March

:03:03.:03:05.

and it should be routinely available from April.

:03:06.:03:11.

more men to be offered about his condition as he wants

:03:12.:04:12.

Now I've had the UroLift, I'm fixed, I no longer have to carry catheters

:04:13.:04:12.

around, I'm not getting up in the night, it takes complete

:04:13.:05:10.

The headteacher is getting ready for financial hard times.

:05:11.:05:18.

Over 20,000 secondary school dues -- students will lose over this

:05:19.:05:21.

proposal. When you consider we sipped on one of the lowest funded

:05:22.:05:26.

counties, to lose 2.5%, it simply takes the meaning out of the

:05:27.:05:33.

formula. But the new formula is only part of the problem. Even schools

:05:34.:05:38.

which game under the new proposal are worried because wide -- rising

:05:39.:05:41.

costs will be more than the increased funding. We've cut back on

:05:42.:05:46.

our support staff, maintenance is cut to the bare minimum for

:05:47.:05:51.

safeguarding and health and safety. The most painful cut, the reduction

:05:52.:05:57.

in teaching time at A-level. The government insists it is listening.

:05:58.:06:01.

The Schools Minister Nick Gibb recently visited Swindon, saying

:06:02.:06:04.

they are keeping funding up while tackling the deficit.

:06:05.:06:07.

We have protected school funding in real terms.

:06:08.:06:17.

We're spending ?40 billion on school funding,

:06:18.:06:28.

we've ever spent in this country on our school system

:06:29.:06:29.

As pupil numbers increase, so will that funding increase.

:06:30.:06:29.

But for many, there's still too little money in the system.

:06:30.:06:29.

Unions and even the Commons Public Accounts Committee

:06:30.:06:30.

say major job losses are around the corner.

:06:31.:06:30.

That's something Simon and Terry know all about,

:06:31.:06:30.

recently made redundant from their jobs in drama and PE.

:06:31.:06:34.

Nobody's ever owed a job for life, but I felt after 30 years

:06:35.:06:37.

it was very difficult to take at the time.

:06:38.:06:44.

Cuts to subjects are already happening elsewhere too.

:06:45.:06:47.

Seven out of ten south-west schools who replied to a survey

:06:48.:06:52.

by a Teachers' Association said they were reducing their curriculum.

:06:53.:07:00.

Design, German, Drama and Music were the most common GCSEs to go.

:07:01.:07:03.

Schools try to protect core subjects like English and Maths.

:07:04.:07:05.

many now say they can't make their finances add up.

:07:06.:07:20.

We will have much more on big issues facing schools in a special edition

:07:21.:07:26.

of the Sunday Politics at 11 o'clock on Sunday morning on BBC One.

:07:27.:07:28.

A puppeteer who creates his own models and films at his home

:07:29.:07:31.

in Bridgwater is now getting interest from international

:07:32.:07:33.

Barnaby Dixon's work has also just seen him win ?50,000

:07:34.:07:37.

This is Manu, the unique creation by Barnaby Dixon

:07:38.:07:49.

Barnaby went on to win the Germany TV competition...

:07:50.:07:58.

That will go towards equipment, lawyers fees, things get

:07:59.:08:06.

Barnaby studied animation but decided to build

:08:07.:08:16.

puppets around his hands so that he could make

:08:17.:08:18.

To do that motion, that is a day's work in stop motion.

:08:19.:08:25.

But this, it happens as quickly as you can perform it.

:08:26.:08:29.

So far he's relied on crowd funding to support his work,

:08:30.:08:33.

it's meant he can spend hours creating characters like Dinosaur.

:08:34.:08:40.

When you are in charge, it gives you the authority and it is

:08:41.:08:43.

Along with the character Dabchick, Barnaby has made

:08:44.:08:46.

The good news is we are doing an Easter egg hunt, which means...

:08:47.:08:54.

With offers from the US to make a TV series

:08:55.:08:58.

Barnaby's self belief is paying off.

:08:59.:08:59.

If you like doing it and other people like it, you can make a

:09:00.:09:03.

Katy Perry has been unveiled as one of the acts who will play this

:09:04.:09:42.

Part of the line up was announced today and the singer took to social

:09:43.:09:43.

media to say she was looking forward to tea, crumpets and the weather.

:09:44.:09:44.

Music lovers have been divided with some saying the line up

:09:45.:09:44.

is the best in years and others saying the festival has moved away

:09:45.:09:44.

Katy Perry has been unveiled as one of the acts who will play this

:09:45.:09:44.

That is where I will have to leave it tonight, but we haven't finished,

:09:45.:09:57.

Ian is up on the roof and has got the weather.

:09:58.:10:00.

Hello, everybody. Today saw the warmest day of the year so far. As

:10:01.:10:05.

we head into tomorrow, there will be noticeably fresher feel, though

:10:06.:10:09.

somewhat cooler day but one which starts with the threat of some

:10:10.:10:14.

showery rain in the morning. Then we will see a fair window on some dry

:10:15.:10:17.

and generally quite bright weather and as we get onto the evening

:10:18.:10:21.

period, we will start to see a renewed threat of some showery rain

:10:22.:10:25.

pushing up from the south-west. Through the course of tonight,

:10:26.:10:28.

temperatures brought a 10-12, a fairly mild night. There have been a

:10:29.:10:33.

few showers around lately and in the second half of the night, with the

:10:34.:10:39.

weak cold front from west to east, again, some showery outbreaks. You

:10:40.:10:41.

will see them drift of north-eastwards as we head through

:10:42.:10:45.

the first part of the day. Barring one or two isolated showers behind

:10:46.:10:49.

that, there will be a drier and brighter period with sunny spells.

:10:50.:10:52.

You will notice quite a breezy day and as we head into the evening,

:10:53.:10:57.

again, some further rain starting to push up from the south-west.

:10:58.:10:59.

Temperatures tomorrow time of year. The chance of a shower

:11:00.:11:04.

on Saturday. Sunday will

:11:05.:11:05.
