Good evening. on the BBC News Channel. | :00:09. | :00:10.
People travelling on the M4 motorway in the West were stuck in their cars | :00:11. | :00:13.
for hours this afternoon, after a gas tanker caught | :00:14. | :00:18.
The road had to be closed in both directions, | :00:19. | :00:22.
meaning long delays for those trying to get away for the Easter Weekend. | :00:23. | :00:25.
The last thing anyone wanted on one of the busiest days | :00:26. | :00:28.
Miles of tailbacks and motorists going nowhere fast. | :00:29. | :00:37.
A tanker carrying compressed gas caught fire at around 12:30pm, | :00:38. | :00:40.
completely shutting the M4 between Chippenham and Bath. | :00:41. | :00:44.
Dozens of people got out of their car because it was | :00:45. | :00:48.
a particular spectacular sight, as you can imagine. | :00:49. | :00:50.
This was before any of the emergency vehicles got there, any | :00:51. | :00:53.
People were having a good look until the police came past | :00:54. | :01:01.
on the hard shoulder screaming out of the window, get back in your | :01:02. | :01:05.
Another driver told the BBC she had been stuck in traffic for two hours, | :01:06. | :01:09.
just a quarter of a mile away from the tanker. | :01:10. | :01:11.
I took a wander down and realised it was a fuel tanker. | :01:12. | :01:18.
Naturally, I just straightaway walked back to my car. | :01:19. | :01:21.
Literally stationary for two and a half hours. | :01:22. | :01:22.
Not one single inch of movement at all. | :01:23. | :01:24.
One lane is still shut this evening but traffic is now moving. | :01:25. | :01:29.
A family being sought by Australian detectives investigating the murder | :01:30. | :01:33.
of a Bristol toddler, say they're making contact with local police. | :01:34. | :01:36.
It comes after officers in New South Wales charged | :01:37. | :01:40.
a man with the murder of Cheryl Grimmer in 1970. | :01:41. | :01:42.
They wanted to speak again to the Goodyear family, | :01:43. | :01:45.
who now live in Nottinghamshire, but at the time lived | :01:46. | :01:48.
The RSPCA is warning people not to use glue traps to catch pests | :01:49. | :01:54.
The birds are being cared for at West Hatch Wildlife Centre. | :01:55. | :02:02.
This one was unable to move its wings when it was found, | :02:03. | :02:05.
and was exhausted from trying to get free. | :02:06. | :02:08.
His primary wing feathers were stuck into his own flanks here. | :02:09. | :02:15.
He'd got quite a few feathers missing on his legs here as well. | :02:16. | :02:18.
Without us intervening and actually washing the glue off, | :02:19. | :02:20.
there's no way he would have ever flown again. | :02:21. | :02:23.
He would have basically just slowly starved to death | :02:24. | :02:25.
Young homeless people in Bristol can now renovate derelict council houses | :02:26. | :02:33.
which they can then rent for next to nothing. | :02:34. | :02:36.
The city council is doing up its old properties, | :02:37. | :02:39.
while giving young apprentices the skills they need to find work. | :02:40. | :02:41.
18-year-old Sophie has been through tough times. | :02:42. | :02:50.
She found herself homeless after troubles with her family. | :02:51. | :02:53.
Now a pilot scheme has given her somewhere to live | :02:54. | :02:55.
Yeah, painting and decorating, that's what I want to do. | :02:56. | :03:00.
The council provides once-derelict homes for free. | :03:01. | :03:08.
A charity supplies the funding to do them up. | :03:09. | :03:10.
A local college does the training, and young people end up | :03:11. | :03:13.
with new skills and a place to live for a peppercorn rent. | :03:14. | :03:17.
What happened here is that the ceiling came down | :03:18. | :03:21.
completely and there was damp everywhere on the walls. | :03:22. | :03:24.
For those behind the project, it's one way of tackling the rising | :03:25. | :03:27.
numbers of young people caught up in the housing crisis. | :03:28. | :03:32.
So, Bristol predicts there is going to be over 700 young | :03:33. | :03:35.
people homeless this year, but that really hides the people | :03:36. | :03:38.
who are sofa-surfing or living in other difficult circumstances | :03:39. | :03:41.
where they don't come to the forefront. | :03:42. | :03:44.
So the predictions are that it's getting worse | :03:45. | :03:47.
and actually it's getting worse cos people can't afford anywhere to live | :03:48. | :03:49.
We need newer, cheaper housing options. | :03:50. | :03:53.
So far, this approach is small scale. | :03:54. | :03:56.
They are currently renovating two homes in Bristol. | :03:57. | :03:58.
But, having proved it can work, they are now looking for many more. | :03:59. | :04:02.
I think if there are properties that need to be brought back into use, | :04:03. | :04:05.
then we are more than happy to get behind them and provide funding | :04:06. | :04:09.
for projects like this that help to get young homeless people | :04:10. | :04:11.
back into employment, but also bring old empty housing | :04:12. | :04:14.
It's an idea, then, that could spread and | :04:15. | :04:20.
generation rent needs every help to carry on living in Bristol. | :04:21. | :04:27.
After 90 years performing at shows and events, | :04:28. | :04:31.
the Royal Signals White Helmets team is being disbanded. | :04:32. | :04:34.
They're famous for their death-defying stunts, | :04:35. | :04:37.
feats of balance, and acrobatics on motorbikes. | :04:38. | :04:39.
The army is keen to move with the times, | :04:40. | :04:41.
and so the display team, based at Blandford Forum in Dorset, | :04:42. | :04:44.
Chippenham Town have been crowned league champions, | :04:45. | :04:48.
They won the Southern Premier title because second place | :04:49. | :04:54.
Leamington didn't beat Biggleswade this afternoon. | :04:55. | :04:57.
The Bluebirds will now play at their highest ever level. | :04:58. | :05:01.
That's almost it from us on this Good Friday night. | :05:02. | :05:08.
I'll now leave you with Sarah Falmer who has our Easter forecast. | :05:09. | :05:14.
Hello, and a very good evening to you. | :05:15. | :05:16.
We've some outbreaks of rain in store through the course of tonight. | :05:17. | :05:19.
The rain will tend to be patchy in nature and light | :05:20. | :05:22.
By the early hours, I suspect most of us will start to be drying out. | :05:23. | :05:27.
A cloudy start to the day for Saturday. | :05:28. | :05:30.
Any remnants of the wet weather easing away and we are in for a dry | :05:31. | :05:34.
afternoon with bright and sunny intervals at times. | :05:35. | :05:35.
To the remainder of the bank holiday weekend, Easter Sunday looks | :05:36. | :05:42.
to start on rather a cloudy note with outbreaks of rain | :05:43. | :05:45.
One or two showers possible on Monday, and it looks | :05:46. | :05:50.
like we will see some frost to start the day on Tuesday. | :05:51. | :05:54.
Your national forecast is coming up next. | :05:55. | :06:07.
Good evening. I don't think everybody was a happy bunny today | :06:08. | :06:14.
with the weather. We had some rain. Some of it | :06:15. | :06:15. |
