Welcome to South East Today, I'm Polly Evans. | :00:00. | :00:00.
The RMT announce a further strike date - as senior politicians accuse | :00:00. | :00:11.
each other of failing to take charge of the situation on Southern Rail. | :00:12. | :00:18.
We have not heard today one word from the other side of the house of | :00:19. | :00:27.
regret, condemnation... Why can't Southern Rail get round the table | :00:28. | :00:30.
and negotiate this with the unions rather than the government pulling | :00:31. | :00:33.
the strings and heading to court at every opportunity? | :00:34. | :00:40.
Warnings of sleet, snow and black ice this evening, | :00:41. | :00:42.
creating treacherous conditions on the roads and disrupting flights. | :00:43. | :00:44.
we'll be live in Kent and Sussex as the authorities | :00:45. | :00:47.
A winter drought warning - despite today's rain the driest | :00:48. | :00:51.
December on record means water supplies are low. | :00:52. | :00:53.
The painting looted by Nazi's from the home of a Jewish | :00:54. | :00:59.
family in Germany finally to be returned | :01:00. | :01:01.
And how a Brighton man's exotic pet genet took an unexpected trip | :01:02. | :01:08.
across the country after falling asleep in a spare tyre. | :01:09. | :01:21.
The RMT union, which represents guards, has announced | :01:22. | :01:36.
on the Southern Rail network - Monday the 23rd of January. | :01:37. | :01:40.
It comes as the government and the opposition once | :01:41. | :01:42.
again attacked each other for their position | :01:43. | :01:44.
New talks had seemed possible earlier this week, | :01:45. | :01:47.
after the boss of Southern spoke face-to-face with the RMT's | :01:48. | :01:49.
Deputy General Secretary at a BBC South East debate. | :01:50. | :01:51.
But the company claims the union hasn't given it any | :01:52. | :01:54.
And today the political row over the dispute continued, | :01:55. | :02:01.
as Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn used an interview with BBC South East | :02:02. | :02:04.
Today to accuse the government of 'pulling the strings'. | :02:05. | :02:06.
The drivers may be back to work today, but a mix of an overtime ban, | :02:07. | :02:11.
trains in the wrong places after yesterday's action | :02:12. | :02:13.
and a problem with the line means it is still | :02:14. | :02:15.
anything but a smooth ride for passengers. | :02:16. | :02:18.
The chances of this being solved in Westminster are about | :02:19. | :02:21.
In an interview with South East Today Jeremy Corbyn once again | :02:22. | :02:26.
accused the government of pulling Southern Rail's strings. | :02:27. | :02:28.
It is about train safety and I think an awful | :02:29. | :02:30.
lot of passengers would think the same. | :02:31. | :02:32.
Why can't Southern Rail get round the table and negotiate this | :02:33. | :02:35.
with the unions rather than the government | :02:36. | :02:36.
pulling the strings and | :02:37. | :02:37.
heading to court at every opportunity? | :02:38. | :02:45.
In the Commons today in transport questions, this from the | :02:46. | :02:48.
Today we have not heard one word from the other | :02:49. | :02:53.
side of the house of regret, of condemnation, of a call | :02:54. | :02:56.
A strike about who closes the train doors is becoming | :02:57. | :03:05.
When you've got a big public sector union | :03:06. | :03:09.
like the rail unions, which are very political | :03:10. | :03:12.
if you like with Southern Rail, the biggest rail franchise, with the | :03:13. | :03:18.
government behind it, it was bound to be political. | :03:19. | :03:23.
It always has been but now that politicisation is coming to | :03:24. | :03:25.
the surface and we can see actually this is bigger | :03:26. | :03:28.
This is about the future of our railways. | :03:29. | :03:36.
We can go out the back now and cut a deal... | :03:37. | :03:40.
After Monday's BBC debate the RMT and Southern | :03:41. | :03:42.
Those hopes were dashed today with the union announcing not a | :03:43. | :03:46.
This dispute has been to the High Court and been battered around | :03:47. | :03:54.
Parliament and to ACAS, but it's still hard to imagine where the | :03:55. | :03:57.
Later in the programme we will have a full interview with Labour leader, | :03:58. | :04:10.
Jeremy Corbyn. Today's rainfall is starting to turn | :04:11. | :04:16.
to snow across the South East as the Met Office | :04:17. | :04:18.
and the environment agency issued Brighton and Hove council is asking | :04:19. | :04:21.
people not to travel wherever possible because of predicted | :04:22. | :04:25.
treacherous road conditions. Heavy rain is likely expected | :04:26. | :04:27.
to wash away any grit and sand, leaving black ice on | :04:28. | :04:30.
roads and pavements. Some flights at Gatwick Airport have | :04:31. | :04:32.
already been cancelled, and passengers are being advised | :04:33. | :04:35.
to check the status of their flight with their airline | :04:36. | :04:37.
before travelling. We have our reporter Peter | :04:38. | :04:39.
Whittlesea in Ashford in Kent - Piers, we can see it is snowing | :04:40. | :04:49.
heavily there already and the critters are getting ready to go | :04:50. | :04:57.
out. -- gritting is getting ready. Yes, they are getting ready to hit | :04:58. | :05:02.
the road. They go out at half past seven this evening and spreading no | :05:03. | :05:06.
less than 100 tonnes of salt and grit across East Sussex, part of | :05:07. | :05:11.
ongoing efforts to try and keep the Southeast moving. | :05:12. | :05:17.
The first forming the front line in the battle to keep the roads clear. | :05:18. | :05:24.
Snow forecast and temperatures set to drop to as low as -5 it will | :05:25. | :05:28.
cover no fewer than 100 miles of East Sussex roads denied alone. How | :05:29. | :05:34.
confident are you that you can keep all roads open? -- tonight alone. We | :05:35. | :05:39.
will do our best. If mother nature conspires against us with strong | :05:40. | :05:43.
winds we are expecting tonight and significant snowfall we will | :05:44. | :05:46.
prioritise the roads we keep open. Rest assured we are working all | :05:47. | :05:50.
night to make sure the roads are safe. Staff at the HQ have been | :05:51. | :05:55.
monitoring the current state of the roads. They use predictive | :05:56. | :05:59.
technology to work out exactly where and when the gritting team will need | :06:00. | :06:06.
to be dispatched. Road surface to bridge tonight will be somewhere | :06:07. | :06:10.
between -4 and -5, which is a real concern. -- temperatures tonight. 50 | :06:11. | :06:18.
rescue crews are on stand-by. We will transport medical staff around | :06:19. | :06:22.
the county, trying to get to vulnerable people which might live | :06:23. | :06:24.
in rural Sussex who cannot get their because of snow and icy conditions. | :06:25. | :06:29.
We will also be on call in case of incidents on the road and maybe | :06:30. | :06:33.
vehicles need to get moved. We want to keep the main roads clear for | :06:34. | :06:38.
emergency vehicles. It is four years since the last major snow hit the | :06:39. | :06:42.
Southeast. It is all treacherous driving conditions and more than 500 | :06:43. | :06:47.
schools forced to close. Medway Council has a severe weather | :06:48. | :06:51.
emergency protocol, providing accommodation for rough sleepers | :06:52. | :06:55.
until the severe weather has passed. Gatwick has already cancelled five | :06:56. | :06:59.
flights so far. It has warned we might have further delays and | :07:00. | :07:04.
cancellations. With the first real blast of winter tonight, so the | :07:05. | :07:08.
first major test of the resilience of the roads. | :07:09. | :07:14.
They are going out in about 45 minutes. They will do three hours of | :07:15. | :07:19.
touring around the county before they return here to load up and do | :07:20. | :07:24.
it all again. They want to make sure whatever they lay down at seven | :07:25. | :07:29.
o'clock is not just washed away. The temperatures tonight could be as low | :07:30. | :07:33.
as minus five. They are likely to make road conditions tomorrow | :07:34. | :07:36.
treacherous. STUDIO: Thank you, Piers. It is in Ashford. | :07:37. | :07:44.
Preparations are well under way. -- Peter is in Ashford. | :07:45. | :07:49.
The latest in Kent is they are predicting higher snowfall than the | :07:50. | :07:53.
first forecast. Around five centimetres on higher ground. The | :07:54. | :07:58.
spots which could be dangerous, Bluebell Hill, deadening Hill, some | :07:59. | :08:04.
parts of the M2and Atwo. The full network will be out and there are 60 | :08:05. | :08:11.
going across Kent, gritting all of the roads tonight and tomorrow | :08:12. | :08:16.
morning, that is a total of 2300 miles of road. In total they will | :08:17. | :08:24.
use 650 tonnes of grit. To have an idea of how much that is, that is | :08:25. | :08:29.
about one tenth of the stockpile here. They cannot start until the | :08:30. | :08:35.
snow has started. It started about 15 minutes ago, so now it really is | :08:36. | :08:40.
operation go. Let's get the roads gritted so they are safe. Thanks, | :08:41. | :08:46.
Peter, in Ashford and Piers in Ringmer. Later Rachel will have a | :08:47. | :08:53.
full weather report. We will also have updates on travel and weather | :08:54. | :08:58.
conditions on local live pages at BBC .co .uk/ Kent and Sussex. That | :08:59. | :09:04.
is from around six o'clock. You can send us your pictures on Twitter, | :09:05. | :09:09.
Facebook or by e-mail at South East Today. | :09:10. | :09:14.
Body worn cameras on lollipop ladies. Efforts to combat dangerous | :09:15. | :09:19.
drivers in Sussex. There's a warning tonight that | :09:20. | :09:29.
despite today's heavy rain, there is a risk to the South East's | :09:30. | :09:32.
water supply because of drought. New figures show it's been | :09:33. | :09:35.
the driest December on record in Kent and the second | :09:36. | :09:37.
driest in Sussex. During December there was only 17mm | :09:38. | :09:39.
of rainfall in Kent. That's compared to the usual | :09:40. | :09:44.
rainfall of just over 73mm And reservoirs are at low levels, | :09:45. | :09:46.
with the one at Bough Beech Our Environment Correspondent | :09:47. | :09:52.
Yvette Austin reports. The exposed beach is a sign | :09:53. | :09:58.
the water level is low, Even with what is forecast it has | :09:59. | :10:05.
been a dry winter so far. It is right for ourselves | :10:06. | :10:12.
and our customers to be aware of it. We have a drought | :10:13. | :10:18.
plan which we refresh every few years and we are looking | :10:19. | :10:23.
at that and seeing how we can Rainfall has been exceptionally low | :10:24. | :10:26.
for the last six months and in Kent just 16% of the long-term | :10:27. | :10:31.
average fell in December. The reservoir is just | :10:32. | :10:35.
over half full at 56%. We have not yet | :10:36. | :10:40.
reached the end of the winter and we would not | :10:41. | :10:46.
expect it to be full. But normally by now the level | :10:47. | :10:49.
would be here, three quarters full. It is reminiscent of the start | :10:50. | :10:52.
of conditions which led to the The dry winter of 2011 | :10:53. | :10:55.
followed by another dry winter saw Bewl fall | :10:56. | :10:58.
to just 32% of capacity. Southern Water said it has | :10:59. | :11:01.
prepared for drought even though it will probably take another | :11:02. | :11:04.
dry winter to get to that stage. Meanwhile the current weather | :11:05. | :11:08.
conditions are in stark contrast The current situation is we have got | :11:09. | :11:10.
a tidal surge coming With a high spring tide | :11:11. | :11:15.
it will hit the North Kent coast tomorrow lunchtime | :11:16. | :11:19.
and South Kent tomorrow midnight. Coastal residents are warned to be | :11:20. | :11:26.
on the alert for possible flooding. But inland there | :11:27. | :11:29.
will be little change The rain we get today | :11:30. | :11:31.
will really not impact on that Ground water levels are low, | :11:32. | :11:35.
seasonally low, so we are not expecting any funny issues | :11:36. | :11:38.
as a result of the rain But the more immediate concern | :11:39. | :11:41.
is for snow and ice. GPs have been posted to another | :11:42. | :11:54.
hospital accident and emergency department in Kent to try and cut | :11:55. | :11:56.
down on unnecessary admissions. Nearly a third of people visiting | :11:57. | :12:02.
A in the county have waited for more than four hours to be seen | :12:03. | :12:05.
and treated, according to the latest GPs have been sent | :12:06. | :12:08.
to the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother | :12:09. | :12:16.
Hospital in Margate. The Government has agreed to hold | :12:17. | :12:18.
talks in an effort to resolve a dispute over plans for a giant | :12:19. | :12:22.
lorry park in Kent. Around 3,500 vehicles will be able | :12:23. | :12:26.
to use the site at Stanford West in order to keep traffic flowing | :12:27. | :12:29.
on the M20 and surrounding roads The Transport Minister John Hayes | :12:30. | :12:32.
has agreed to meet the Conservative MP for Folkestone and | :12:33. | :12:39.
Hythe, Damian Collins. A school in West Sussex has taken | :12:40. | :12:44.
the unusual measure of buying a body worn camera for its lollipop lady | :12:45. | :12:50.
because of dangerous driving concerns when children | :12:51. | :12:54.
are trying to cross the road. Harlands Primary School in Haywards | :12:55. | :12:56.
heath is only the second It means a driver going past | :12:57. | :12:59.
the lollipop lady will be recorded Our Education Correspondent | :13:00. | :13:03.
Bryony MacKenzie has more. Look closely. You'll notice | :13:04. | :13:13.
something different about this lollipop lady. She is wearing a | :13:14. | :13:18.
camera recording video and audio. Will it stop what she has to face? | :13:19. | :13:24.
Verbal abuse. Hand gestures are quite common. And rarely, but it | :13:25. | :13:31.
does happen, driving straight through my lollipop. They come into | :13:32. | :13:37.
contact with your car? They just skimmed the side of my code. I have | :13:38. | :13:42.
jumped some time. Dangerous driving outside school gates is not | :13:43. | :13:46.
uncommon. Finding inconsiderate drivers would lead to angry scenes | :13:47. | :13:50.
and Ashford headteacher warned parents dangerous driving could kill | :13:51. | :13:56.
a child on a school run. And cars driving on pavement outside of | :13:57. | :14:01.
Folkestone School. Is the use of cameras over the top? Parents here | :14:02. | :14:05.
did not think so. It happens all the time. People use it as a playground. | :14:06. | :14:11.
It is not fair on children. They should be seriously punished. I | :14:12. | :14:17.
think it will make things much safer because at the moment people are | :14:18. | :14:20.
just driving out of control. It would record footage of drivers and | :14:21. | :14:24.
is wiped clean every morning. There is no database of footage. Only | :14:25. | :14:30.
incidents which are recorded and -- only incidents are recorded and kept | :14:31. | :14:35.
and then handed to Sussex Police. I wholeheartedly believe it will make | :14:36. | :14:39.
a difference to the whole community. Two incidents per week will being | :14:40. | :14:43.
reported to Sussex Police. It is hoped it will persuade drivers to | :14:44. | :14:46.
think again. -- were being reported. The RMT union which represents train | :14:47. | :14:57.
guards has announced another 24-hour strike on the Southern Rail network | :14:58. | :15:02.
on Monday the 23rd of January. It comes as the government and the | :15:03. | :15:05.
opposition have again attacked each other for their position on the | :15:06. | :15:09.
industrial action. Also tonight, he apparently travelled across the | :15:10. | :15:14.
country in a spare tyre. The exotic pet genet reunited with his owner in | :15:15. | :15:19.
Sussex. After the heavy rain today we are seeing this snow. We are | :15:20. | :15:24.
expecting to get between four and five centimetres, with warnings | :15:25. | :15:29.
about ice for tomorrow. I will have the details of the forecast later in | :15:30. | :15:30.
the programme. As passengers put up with another | :15:31. | :15:41.
day of industrial action on Southern Rail the Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn | :15:42. | :15:45.
is again defended the action being taken by the unions. -- has again. | :15:46. | :15:52.
Jeremy Corbyn is now two years into his leadership and with only one | :15:53. | :15:56.
Labour MP in the south-east many commentators believe his party is | :15:57. | :15:59.
facing an uphill struggle in gaining any more. Helen Katt met him at his | :16:00. | :16:06.
office in Westminster had started by asking him what Jeremy Corbyn | :16:07. | :16:09.
regards as the biggest issues affecting the south-east. | :16:10. | :16:13.
A transport system giving hope and opportunity | :16:14. | :16:15.
I'm glad you said improving transport, because the biggest issue | :16:16. | :16:19.
dominating our news agenda at the moment are the problems | :16:20. | :16:22.
Earlier this week you said you would join a Southern Rail picket line. | :16:23. | :16:26.
Do you have any actual plans to go and do that during the strikes? | :16:27. | :16:29.
What I want to do is make sure we get a good rail service. | :16:30. | :16:32.
I think the people that travel in from | :16:33. | :16:34.
Brighton and other places into London have been very short-changed | :16:35. | :16:37.
and got a very bad deal, very overcrowded trains, frequent | :16:38. | :16:39.
cancellations, short trains and there is a safety issue. | :16:40. | :16:41.
Surely it's time for the government to step | :16:42. | :16:49.
in and work with the Mayor of London and possibly TFL taking over an | :16:50. | :16:53.
extension of services outside London. | :16:54. | :16:54.
But above all the situation cannot go on. | :16:55. | :16:56.
The union isn't going to make any money out of it, the members | :16:57. | :16:59.
aren't going to make any money out of it, | :17:00. | :17:01.
I think an awful lot of passengers would think the same. | :17:02. | :17:05.
So why can't Southern Rail get round the table | :17:06. | :17:09.
and negotiate this with the unions rather than the government pulling | :17:10. | :17:12.
the strings and heading off to court at every opportunity? | :17:13. | :17:14.
Do you worry that you stacking up on one side and | :17:15. | :17:17.
Theresa May very much supporting the other side actually | :17:18. | :17:20.
The Labour MP for Hove said maybe a more evenhanded | :17:21. | :17:24.
An evenhanded approach would be a good thing | :17:25. | :17:28.
and that would come from | :17:29. | :17:29.
running a proper service, recognising the legitimate safety | :17:30. | :17:31.
Regardless of who they back in this, commuters | :17:32. | :17:37.
Let me give you a quote from Richard who | :17:38. | :17:44.
got in touch with us and he felt your decision to say | :17:45. | :17:46.
that you would back the unions in quite this way | :17:47. | :17:49.
showed that you really don't care about the disruption to the lives of | :17:50. | :17:52.
What would you say to someone like him? | :17:53. | :17:57.
I do care about the disruption because we all suffer | :17:58. | :18:00.
People have difficulty getting to work, school, college, | :18:01. | :18:02.
family relations and anything as a result of it. | :18:03. | :18:06.
The most valuable asset any company has is its staff and | :18:07. | :18:09.
I would say to Southern Rail, talk to your staff, | :18:10. | :18:20.
get round the table, because the issue of | :18:21. | :18:22.
The union is representing its members in doing | :18:23. | :18:25.
Nobody wants cancellations of trains. | :18:26. | :18:28.
It's time to get around the table and | :18:29. | :18:31.
Can you help get them around the table? | :18:32. | :18:36.
The unions trust you, that is a bonus. | :18:37. | :18:39.
Our Shadow Transport Spokesman is in touch | :18:40. | :18:42.
with all sides on this and is | :18:43. | :18:46.
trying to make sure that negotiations are resumed but I think | :18:47. | :18:48.
the government also has a role in this because it | :18:49. | :18:51.
the background Chris Grayling is pulling the strings all the time. | :18:52. | :18:58.
Helen is here now. Are we likely to see Jeremy Corbyn standing on the | :18:59. | :19:07.
picket line any time soon? He did seem to rather sidestep that | :19:08. | :19:10.
question so I would not put money on it but that is not in any way to | :19:11. | :19:14.
doubt house and silly he is backing the union case. I think that came | :19:15. | :19:21.
across clearly. -- how sincerely. It would be very strong and does risk | :19:22. | :19:25.
alienating some passengers and potentially could cause problems for | :19:26. | :19:27.
the Labour MPs with constituencies on the network who have had a more | :19:28. | :19:33.
cautious line. He heavily criticised Southern Rail and Chris Grayling, | :19:34. | :19:41.
Secretary of State for Transport. It appears the politics has hardened. | :19:42. | :19:44.
The Conservatives are calling for anti-strike laws and Jeremy Corbyn | :19:45. | :19:47.
pegging the party to the union case. The risk is as just might feel the | :19:48. | :19:52.
political focus is moving away from solving the immediate problem. -- is | :19:53. | :19:55.
people just might feel. A Sussex man says he's over the moon | :19:56. | :19:57.
that he will be reunited with a painting that was looted | :19:58. | :20:05.
by the Nazis from his Now 81, Vernon Reynold's grandfather | :20:06. | :20:08.
was a businessman whose passion To escape persecution | :20:09. | :20:16.
for being Jewish, Vernon came to England with his mother | :20:17. | :20:19.
on the Kindertransport Both his grandfather and grandmother | :20:20. | :20:21.
died in a concentration camp. Chrissie Reidy reports | :20:22. | :20:25.
on how his rightful heritage is now This watercolour was painted by an | :20:26. | :20:41.
artist in 1922. It used to hang on the walls in Vernon's wall until it | :20:42. | :20:49.
was looted by the Nazis. You cannot forgive it so easily with something | :20:50. | :20:52.
that happens in war, anything that happens in war but the stealing | :20:53. | :20:57.
property from even the belligerent, not even the people who were | :20:58. | :21:00.
fighting, just ordinary innocent citizens because they were Jewish. | :21:01. | :21:06.
In a mountain cave near the garden, the secret treasure trove was | :21:07. | :21:10.
located by American soldiers. Like many Jewish families in World War II | :21:11. | :21:13.
the Nazis abraded campus houses and commerce credit card. This footage | :21:14. | :21:21.
shows American soldiers discovering Hermann Goring's Sigrid collection. | :21:22. | :21:24.
This is depicted the struggle of a woman to be wrote reunited with some | :21:25. | :21:30.
of the paintings by Gustav Klimt. Hitler would have first choice, | :21:31. | :21:35.
Hermann Goring, the senior leaders would have a chance to acquire and | :21:36. | :21:40.
take them. Some were sold on the art market. It did in fact room in the | :21:41. | :21:45.
Nazi occupation of Europe because there were hundreds of works of art | :21:46. | :21:51.
flooding the market. The Nazis continue their obligation -- -- | :21:52. | :21:56.
occupation and Vernon came to England on the Kindertransport. His | :21:57. | :21:59.
father and grandparents were sent to a concentration camp. The painting | :22:00. | :22:03.
ended up in the hands of some art dealers before it was finally | :22:04. | :22:07.
purchased by a museum in Hanover. Were it hangs today. After five | :22:08. | :22:13.
years of wrangling the museum has agreed to give back the watercolour. | :22:14. | :22:20.
We would like a more positive effort from German museums and art | :22:21. | :22:24.
galleries and say that really we should try and find the family to | :22:25. | :22:29.
give this back to because it was obtained wrongly. While the family's | :22:30. | :22:34.
efforts have paid off it is a bitter sweet victory, he says. | :22:35. | :22:40.
A man from Brighton is celebrating the safe return of their beloved | :22:41. | :22:43.
exotic pet, a genet, after it went missing | :22:44. | :22:45.
and turned up in Bedforshire - after apparently falling asleep | :22:46. | :22:47.
Genets are originally from Africa and although they look like a cat, | :22:48. | :22:57.
they're actually belong to a different species. | :22:58. | :22:59.
They are solitary animals in the wild, although they are very | :23:00. | :23:01.
friendly if they're socialised as a kitten, but once they've | :23:02. | :23:04.
bonded with a family, they don't cope well with change | :23:05. | :23:06.
Which is why Kyle Watson is so delighted to be | :23:07. | :23:10.
Sometimes he will rub his face up against you. Like a cat. Glad to | :23:11. | :23:24.
have him back after 18 days away from home. The genet went missing | :23:25. | :23:33.
just before Christmas. It was a one-week period, then a week and a | :23:34. | :23:37.
half and by this point we had had minus weather out there. It was so | :23:38. | :23:41.
cold. He is from Africa. I was thinking, he's gone. Four days he | :23:42. | :23:45.
went looking for his four-legged friend in the early hours hoping to | :23:46. | :23:52.
find him. He was eventually found in Milton Keynes, 150 miles away, where | :23:53. | :23:55.
he was taken to a veterinary surgery. I have never seen anything | :23:56. | :24:00.
like this in my professional life. I have been a vet 20 years. We have | :24:01. | :24:07.
not had any locally. It was a bit of a learning experience. The family | :24:08. | :24:11.
had to look after the genet from three days old, meaning feeding | :24:12. | :24:19.
every two house for six months. Two years later the bond between man and | :24:20. | :24:25.
beast is strong. I got upset and tearful and emotional more on the | :24:26. | :24:28.
way home when I was on my own with him. Because out there it was | :24:29. | :24:35.
overwhelming. I did not believe... Is this a dream? I have got him | :24:36. | :24:42.
back. You missed him, why is that? Because he is such a character | :24:43. | :24:46.
around the house. The family is taking steps to make sure that he | :24:47. | :24:48.
never gets lost again. It is going to be called in the | :24:49. | :25:00.
snow. Rachel is herewith the forecast. The snow we have talked | :25:01. | :25:09.
about has eventually arrived. Expect to see between four and five | :25:10. | :25:13.
centimetres falling widely, maybe more over higher ground. Earlier it | :25:14. | :25:19.
was falling as rain. It has been turning into sleet and snow. The | :25:20. | :25:24.
reason for that is these bitterly cold wind is coming in from the | :25:25. | :25:29.
north-west. Going through tonight that is mostly falling as snow. It | :25:30. | :25:33.
is going to be very unsettled in the first part of the evening and then | :25:34. | :25:38.
clearing. The wind is really picking up with that system as well. Gusting | :25:39. | :25:43.
40 to 50 mph on the south coast. Bitterly cold temperatures. Anything | :25:44. | :25:50.
falling on the ground will freeze. Minus two or three degrees is | :25:51. | :25:53.
possible in rural areas and widely dropping below freezing in towns and | :25:54. | :25:58.
cities. First thing tomorrow morning, problems with ice. Met | :25:59. | :26:03.
office warnings as we go through the day and on Friday temperatures stay | :26:04. | :26:06.
at freezing on the ground and we expect more outbreaks of rain, sleet | :26:07. | :26:12.
and snow in the morning. Frosty, I see. Take care if you're out and | :26:13. | :26:16.
about on the road first thing. This is the weather front we will see in | :26:17. | :26:20.
the morning. Tightly spaced isobars and the direction of the winds, | :26:21. | :26:24.
coming from the north-west, indicating blustery and bitterly | :26:25. | :26:27.
cold. First thing, some brightness and some cloud. Unsettled for a | :26:28. | :26:34.
time. That clears and again really blustery, temperatures by the | :26:35. | :26:37.
afternoon reaching highs may be of four degrees but with the wind chill | :26:38. | :26:43.
feeling like subzero. As we finish on Friday, mostly dry with clearing | :26:44. | :26:47.
skies and as a result these temperatures are really plummeting. | :26:48. | :26:50.
Overnight lows from Friday, going into Saturday, -3, maybe minus four | :26:51. | :26:57.
degrees. Another very hard frost as we start on Saturday. And we stayed | :26:58. | :27:02.
bitterly cold as well. Heading through the day the chance of a | :27:03. | :27:05.
winter flurry. For the most part we stay dry. Temperatures at five or 6 | :27:06. | :27:10.
degrees. With the wind, feeling cooler. In the South east corner | :27:11. | :27:16.
over into Sunday we will see some rain, mostly falling as rain, but a | :27:17. | :27:20.
very grey, cold and not pleasant day. Into the new week for Monday | :27:21. | :27:26.
and Tuesday and a risk of unsettled weather, staying bitterly cold. In | :27:27. | :27:31.
the next 24 hours, do take care with potential problems for black eyes | :27:32. | :27:35.
tomorrow morning. That is not looking good at all, Rachel. Thank | :27:36. | :27:41.
you very much for that. Sara Smith is in Crowborough. Warnings for | :27:42. | :27:47.
travellers to night, Sarah? -- tonight # it only started snowing | :27:48. | :27:57.
about one hour ago. -- tonight? People are being warned not to go | :27:58. | :28:00.
out at all that they can help it because black ice on the road. At | :28:01. | :28:04.
Gatwick Airport six flights have already been cancelled so far. They | :28:05. | :28:08.
say people need to check before travel. There is gritting on the | :28:09. | :28:14.
roads but people are saying there are are already treacherous | :28:15. | :28:16.
conditions and people are struggling. For the trains, no | :28:17. | :28:20.
updates yet apart from check before you travel. If you are a Southern | :28:21. | :28:25.
Rail customer, from midnight they will not be any trains because of | :28:26. | :28:29.
the strike action. OK, thank you. That is about it for now. We will | :28:30. | :28:34.
have more about the situation with the weather at eight o'clock and | :28:35. | :28:37.
half past ten. And I will be back tomorrow. Keep in touch on local | :28:38. | :28:39.
radio and online as well. Goodbye. Bring on the boys. | :28:40. | :28:44.
