Three men have been jailed for a total of 40 years | :00:11. | :00:14.
for smuggling millions of pounds worth of cocaine into Kent - | :00:15. | :00:17.
by dropping the drugs from a light aircraft | :00:18. | :00:19.
But National Crime Agency officers had the gang under surveillance | :00:20. | :00:25.
and they were caught within hours of picking up the cargo. | :00:26. | :00:27.
It's the latest in a string of attempts to smuggle drugs | :00:28. | :00:30.
into the country using small planes and helicopters. | :00:31. | :00:32.
It would have been a manoeuvre similar to this one being | :00:33. | :00:39.
demonstrated for us today at a rural airfield. | :00:40. | :00:42.
A small plane swooping down to within a few feet of the ground | :00:43. | :00:46.
so that containers of drugs could be dropped onto the grass below. | :00:47. | :00:51.
Last June, National Crime Agency officers were planning a swoop | :00:52. | :00:57.
of their own and today, Andrew Barrett, Michael Mealing | :00:58. | :00:59.
and Jonathan Hart are starting their prison sentences. | :01:00. | :01:05.
Investigators who had been tracking the three men saw a light aircraft | :01:06. | :01:09.
They followed a Land Rover where they arrested two | :01:10. | :01:17.
of the smugglers and found two thirds of the cocaine. | :01:18. | :01:19.
The rest was found in a van in Watford where | :01:20. | :01:22.
For this experienced pilot, it's no surprise the smugglers | :01:23. | :01:27.
People in the flying community, and if you look around | :01:28. | :01:34.
you here at the airfield, everyone will notice something | :01:35. | :01:37.
unusual or if an unusual person drops into the airfield | :01:38. | :01:39.
However, if someone is smuggling some drugs or contraband in, | :01:40. | :01:42.
in poor weather, low visibility, flying low, dropping | :01:43. | :01:44.
it and disappearing, it's quite likely that no one | :01:45. | :01:46.
That could be in a field in the middle of the country. | :01:47. | :01:52.
Light aircraft are a manner in and out of which drugs can be | :01:53. | :02:06.
It could be firearms, people actually brought | :02:07. | :02:09.
in by a landing strip, no different to the coastline | :02:10. | :02:12.
with boats coming in in a similar way, doing a similar thing. | :02:13. | :02:14.
The important thing to understand is that we are now | :02:15. | :02:17.
focused, as an agency, on the tackling this threat. | :02:18. | :02:19.
This was officers last April stopping a car containing | :02:20. | :02:23.
That had been dropped into a field in Kent by helicopter. | :02:24. | :02:29.
In December, two men were found guilty of smuggling to gain | :02:30. | :02:32.
Three more smugglers may now be behind bars but the enormity | :02:33. | :02:38.
More cooperation is needed between providers of help for young | :02:39. | :02:50.
people with mental illnesses to ensure those who self harm get | :02:51. | :02:53.
the best possible care, according to campaigners. | :02:54. | :02:54.
There has been a 40% increase in hospital admissions | :02:55. | :02:58.
in the South East because of self harming with a marked increase | :02:59. | :03:01.
in the 11 to 18-year-old age group - that's gone up from 920 | :03:02. | :03:04.
Sussex School pupil Olivia Nathan is studying hard for her A-levels. | :03:05. | :03:16.
One of her chosen subjects is psychology. | :03:17. | :03:18.
It's an area she has already researched extensively, | :03:19. | :03:20.
largely due to her own experience of self harming between | :03:21. | :03:22.
It all went back to the age of six when I lost my aunt to suicide. | :03:23. | :03:32.
I suppressed those emotions for so many years and | :03:33. | :03:35.
When I was 13 and had counselling, that was the first time these | :03:36. | :03:39.
emotions and thoughts had been unleashed and they | :03:40. | :03:41.
I couldn't cope with them so I ended up self harming. | :03:42. | :03:47.
Latest figures show a sharp increase in the number of admissions of young | :03:48. | :03:50.
people in the south-east to hospital due to self harming. | :03:51. | :03:52.
The Department of Health said they are investing ?1.4 billion | :03:53. | :03:55.
across the country to help and strengthening the links between | :03:56. | :03:57.
Doing exactly that is the Right Here project in Brighton. | :03:58. | :04:04.
They provide workshops, activities and to go into schools, | :04:05. | :04:07.
as well as providing online tools to help young people. | :04:08. | :04:10.
Demand for these leaflets is higher than ever. | :04:11. | :04:20.
We have known for a long time that there has been in an increase | :04:21. | :04:23.
in self harm but it's important to view them in the context of us | :04:24. | :04:27.
having more conversations about mental health and talking | :04:28. | :04:29.
to more people about self harm, and reducing stigma around | :04:30. | :04:31.
Now three years free of self harm, Olivia has a butterfly | :04:32. | :04:38.
symbol tattooed on her arm to remind her of an illness | :04:39. | :04:41.
that so often remains hidden and untreated. | :04:42. | :04:44.
Hospital staff involved in the emergency treatment | :04:45. | :04:54.
of a mother who had just given birth, failed to contact | :04:55. | :04:57.
the on-call consultant anaesthetist for three hours, | :04:58. | :04:59.
30-year-old Frances Cappuccini died after an emergency caesarian | :05:00. | :05:05.
Today, an expert consultant obstetric anaesthetist | :05:06. | :05:09.
told the hearing that - even after looking into the case | :05:10. | :05:12.
for more than three years - he still didn't know who that | :05:13. | :05:15.
The Transport Secretary Chris Grayling says the unions involved | :05:16. | :05:20.
in industrial action affecting the Southern Rail Network need | :05:21. | :05:22.
to cancel strikes to allow talks 'without pre-conditions' | :05:23. | :05:24.
Mr Grayling asked that next week's planned action be called off. | :05:25. | :05:28.
Paul Cox from the RMT said they are always prepared | :05:29. | :05:30.
Well, we have a special debate programme on this issue coming up. | :05:31. | :05:48.
This is not a dispute with the public, this is a dispute | :05:49. | :05:51.
A bit of a disgrace, really, isn't it? | :05:52. | :05:59.
That it has gone on as long as it has. | :06:00. | :06:01.
I try to empathise with why they are striking. | :06:02. | :06:05.
You pay too much for delays, cancellations and disruption. | :06:06. | :06:08.
I don't think the Prime Minister has any idea of the level of suffering | :06:09. | :06:16.
and pain that rail passengers and businesses are suffering. | :06:17. | :06:23.
There is only one body responsible for the current strike, this | :06:24. | :06:34.
is a strike from the trade unions. | :06:35. | :06:36.
You'll be able to watch that programme on Monday | :06:37. | :06:38.
In your last few minutes, we have heard that there has been an | :06:39. | :06:47.
incident at Ashford station and services are disrupted. | :06:48. | :06:49.
That's it from me, your national weather forecast coming up, | :06:50. | :06:51.
but first let's get the picture in the South East | :06:52. | :06:53.
Good evening. A frosty start to day again today. That has really set the | :06:54. | :07:00.
tone for the weekend. More cloud around and feeling less cold than it | :07:01. | :07:04.
has week. At times, it will be some patchy drizzle around but, for the | :07:05. | :07:08.
most part, staying dry. The same can't be said for tonight. Heavy | :07:09. | :07:12.
rain at times, heralding some really mild air. Look at these | :07:13. | :07:17.
temperatures. Overnight lows, if you can call it that, of 5-6 C. As we | :07:18. | :07:24.
start the day for Saturday, four Celsius. A ridge of high pressure | :07:25. | :07:28.
giving us some cloud, south-westerly winds. By the afternoon, height of | :07:29. | :07:30.
nine Celsius. Good evening. The weather has been | :07:31. | :07:41.
turning milder and also cloudier through the course of the day. We | :07:42. | :07:45.
did see some clear spells moving in from the North will stop this was | :07:46. | :07:50.
the sunset, captured in Dundee. Some clear spells as we headed through | :07:51. | :07:54.
the course of the afternoon into the evening. Really, through the | :07:55. | :07:57.
weekend, wiki with a similar theme. Much milder than it has been. A lot | :07:58. | :08:02.
of cloud around in general, but for most of us think. Dry. Not dry | :08:03. | :08:06.
everywhere at the moment, particularly across central and | :08:07. | :08:08.
southern parts of England and Wales. We have a lot of cloud, bringing | :08:09. | :08:12.
outbreaks of light rain and drizzle. The patchy rain will ease away | :08:13. | :08:17.
slowly towards the south through tonight and further north across the | :08:18. | :08:20.
country, drier conditions. Wherever you are, it's pretty cloudy. Mostly | :08:21. | :08:25.
frost free to start the weekend, but there could be frost across the | :08:26. | :08:28.
central glens of Scotland. | :08:29. | :08:30. |
