Today's main headlines in the South East:

:00:00.:00:00.

The surgeon accused of carrying out unnecessary operations at a private

:00:00.:00:07.

hospital found to have appalling standards of care.

:00:08.:00:12.

The two men convicted of breaking into a house and then

:00:13.:00:15.

torturing their elderly victims with boiling water.

:00:16.:00:18.

And, with Storm Doris behind us, we have a calmer but cooler

:00:19.:00:21.

A Kent surgeon faces allegations that he carried out

:00:22.:00:37.

unnecessary operations for his own financial gain.

:00:38.:00:40.

Mohammed Sait was working at the Fawkham Manor

:00:41.:00:42.

Tonight, the private hospital itself is the subject of a damning

:00:43.:00:46.

inspection report which found patients at risk of harm,

:00:47.:00:49.

poor standards of hygiene, and in one case, the wrong patient

:00:50.:00:52.

being taken to the operating theatre.

:00:53.:00:55.

Our Health Correspondent Mark Norman has the details.

:00:56.:00:59.

This is Mr Mohammed Sait, the surgeon under investigation

:01:00.:01:02.

for allegedly conducting clinically inappropriate operations on NHS

:01:03.:01:07.

Mr Sait, if these allegations are proven to be correct,

:01:08.:01:12.

should not be able to practice in medicine at all

:01:13.:01:15.

That's something there should be absolutely no

:01:16.:01:18.

You've spoken to constituents, and indeed have personal

:01:19.:01:22.

experience with Mr Sait, I understand?

:01:23.:01:23.

When people go to hospital, they need to have confidence

:01:24.:01:29.

that the treatment they are going to receive is both necessary

:01:30.:01:32.

Solicitors are now acting for most of Mr Sait's patients.

:01:33.:01:37.

It seems that the intervention that had been done had been seemingly

:01:38.:01:41.

We are at a very early stage of the investigation into this,

:01:42.:01:48.

as are the police and the Health Authority.

:01:49.:01:50.

But this is what I'm being told at the moment.

:01:51.:01:53.

But is the care this hospital provides good enough?

:01:54.:01:56.

In their report published today, they talk of patients being at high

:01:57.:02:00.

They say staff entered a theatre department

:02:01.:02:04.

And they witnessed the wrong patient being taken into a theatre.

:02:05.:02:12.

These findings do not relate to operations

:02:13.:02:13.

It's not what you'd expect to see in any sort of hospital.

:02:14.:02:18.

We didn't expect to see staff not routinely washing their hands

:02:19.:02:21.

and cleaning their hands according to policies.

:02:22.:02:23.

Whilst we were actually there, during the inspection,

:02:24.:02:25.

we witnessed the wrong patient being taken into theatre.

:02:26.:02:27.

Despite repeated attempts, this programme has been

:02:28.:02:31.

A number of investigations are still ongoing into his work.

:02:32.:02:36.

The hospital say improvements have been made to both their premises

:02:37.:02:39.

Mark Norman, BBC South East Today, Fawkham.

:02:40.:02:46.

Well, our reporter Nafisa Sayani has been following the story.

:02:47.:02:49.

Nafisa, what more has the hospital had to say tonight about both

:02:50.:02:52.

Mr Sait and the CQC inspection report?

:02:53.:02:58.

Well, they have declined to be interviewed today. But they say they

:02:59.:03:04.

are addressing the issues that have been raised by the CQC report. They

:03:05.:03:10.

have spent ?250,000 in their operating theatres, and they are

:03:11.:03:14.

strengthening their management. They also insist that patient safety is

:03:15.:03:17.

of paramount importance to the hospital. In the past they have said

:03:18.:03:22.

that Mr Sait was suspended last July after the allegations came to light.

:03:23.:03:27.

That as a company they have been investigating those obligations, and

:03:28.:03:30.

by Mr Sait is not currently working at any of their hospital. So what

:03:31.:03:35.

are we expecting to happen next? The MP Gareth Johnson has told us he

:03:36.:03:39.

will be raising this issue with the Health Minister. There are a number

:03:40.:03:44.

of investigations underway at the moment. We must also add that Mr

:03:45.:03:47.

Sait works at the Darren Valley Hospital in Oxford as well, but we

:03:48.:03:53.

understand there have been no complaints about his work with the

:03:54.:03:54.

on BBC Radio Kent, John and Maggie will be speaking to the leader,

:06:37.:06:38.

Alan Jarrett. Work has begun on a major new power

:06:39.:06:40.

link between Britain and France through the Channel Tunnel,

:06:41.:06:43.

designed to reduce the risk of blackouts and help keep down

:06:44.:06:45.

the cost of energy bills. Eurotunnel is investing

:06:46.:06:48.

?500 million in the project , which will create 300 new jobs.

:06:49.:06:50.

When complete, the link will be able to carry 1,000 megawatts -

:06:51.:06:56.

the same amount a nuclear plant can generate - and enough

:06:57.:06:59.

to power 2 million homes. As Storm Doris threatened to uproot

station at Hinkley Point The new power cable means if Britain

:07:18.:07:20.

isn't producing enough energy at peak times,

:07:21.:07:26.

it could be imported from France. If Britain is producing too much,

:07:27.:07:30.

power can be sold to the French. How important is this

:07:31.:07:35.

to prevent blackouts? And the Energy Minister has clearly

:07:36.:07:38.

stated that it brings huge security and safety about the supply

:07:39.:07:49.

of energy in Great Britain. Cables more than 50

:08:05.:08:10.

for us to sell energy we don't need at a higher price to the French,

:08:11.:08:14.

and to buy energy at a lower price That ends up with a bigger

:09:45.:09:47.

Well, Storm Doris has been causing problems

:09:48.:09:48.

that's for sure. Let's look at this photo taken by one of our weather

:09:49.:10:06.

watchers. Thank you for all of the pictures from today. Tonight we are

:10:07.:10:11.

seeing things calm down, the winds are dropping off. Fairly clear skies

:10:12.:10:15.

for some of the night. There is a possibility of frost in more rural

:10:16.:10:19.

spots, one or two showers around keeping the frost that they where

:10:20.:10:24.

they fall. Temperatures getting down to three or four Celsius. Tomorrow a

:10:25.:10:28.

very different day, lots of blue sky around. That means lots of sunshine.

:10:29.:10:32.

It is going to feel a lot, with the winds dropping off as well.

:10:33.:10:41.

Temperatures 7-8 C. Quite a bit cooler than today. Tomorrow evening

:10:42.:10:43.

we will see cloud starting to build. A little bit of rain overnight as

:10:44.:10:47.

well. Saturday is looking like a cloudy, slightly breezy day again.

:10:48.:10:52.

Temperatures getting up to 8-9 C. Sunday is looking very similar as

:10:53.:10:57.

well. But if we have a look at the outlook for the next few days, you

:10:58.:10:59.

can see the temperatures dropping a be much milder. I will leave you

:11:00.:11:01.

with Thomas Shelter. Good evening. It was quite a day for

:11:02.:11:14.

some of us. We get these sort of storms every couple of years also.

:11:15.:11:19.

Difficult to give an exact number, but it was certainly a nasty one.

:11:20.:11:25.

It's now moving into Holland, Germany, south of Denmark, and it

:11:26.:11:30.

continues to blow itself out. The winds around coasts were not

:11:31.:11:34.

particularly spectacular, but the inland winds were unusual, 62 mph in

:11:35.:11:40.

London. A trail of damage across the UK with trees falling down, mainly

:11:41.:11:43.

trees, but
