Welcome to South Today. than we really are in international | :00:00. | :00:00.
Coming up - provide more funding - or see more GP practices close. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Health bosses in Oxfordshire tell NHS England surgeries need more | :00:07. | :00:09.
Also, how demand on a foodbank has increased by 50% | :00:10. | :00:16.
How you could help stately homes like Waddesdon Manor | :00:17. | :00:24.
stop the destruction caused by clothes moths. | :00:25. | :00:33.
The government's being urged to review how much funding | :00:34. | :00:39.
it's giving to Oxfordshire's GPs - amid concerns of what's being | :00:40. | :00:42.
Health bosses in the county applied for 50 million pounds | :00:43. | :00:47.
but only received two million from NHS England. | :00:48. | :00:51.
The Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee | :00:52. | :00:54.
for Oxfordshire has written to the Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt | :00:55. | :00:56.
warning that several practices have already had to close. | :00:57. | :00:59.
But what if GPs weren't here to see us at all? | :01:00. | :01:09.
Fears for the future of general practice have been raised | :01:10. | :01:12.
And doctors in Oxfordshire say the situation is serious. | :01:13. | :01:16.
You've got a drop in GP funding, now at its lowest level for ten years. | :01:17. | :01:23.
When you think that general practice deals with 90% of NHS contacts each | :01:24. | :01:33.
It is a perfect storm and the general | :01:34. | :01:39.
practice and the NHS is really struggling. | :01:40. | :01:41.
Oxfordshire's Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee has now | :01:42. | :01:43.
written to the Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt. | :01:44. | :01:45.
It says it has grave concerns about the sustainability | :01:46. | :01:48.
of general practice across the county. | :01:49. | :01:52.
It points out that Oxfordshire health bosses | :01:53. | :01:56.
were granted just ?2 million of the ?50 million they asked for | :01:57. | :01:59.
And it says some GP practices have already had to close, | :02:00. | :02:06.
risking a "detrimental impact on access to essential care". | :02:07. | :02:14.
One of those closures is here at Deer Park in Witney. | :02:15. | :02:16.
Patients say it is a huge loss for the area. | :02:17. | :02:20.
My husband had cancer, my daughter had cancer, they are both | :02:21. | :02:23.
If we had been in Witney, no disrespect to the doctors | :02:24. | :02:33.
there, we would have waited five or six weeks to see them. | :02:34. | :02:35.
We wouldn't have got the diagnosis so quickly. | :02:36. | :02:42.
Doctors say they're worried the Government isn't listening | :02:43. | :02:44.
Unless government wakes up to the reality | :02:45. | :03:02.
of general practice, I | :03:03. | :03:02.
really do fear for its continued existence. | :03:03. | :03:05.
And of course, if general practice fails, the NHS in its | :03:06. | :03:07.
The Department of Health says it's invested ?2.4 billion | :03:08. | :03:10.
into the sector to improve care, and is doing more to attract GPs | :03:11. | :03:13.
into the profession, including agreeing a pay rise | :03:14. | :03:15.
and bringing in flexible working schemes. | :03:16. | :03:17.
?20,000 worth of aid's left Oxfam's warehouse | :03:18. | :03:19.
in Bicester this afternoon - destined for Somalia. | :03:20. | :03:21.
Nearly three million people are facing a severe food shortage | :03:22. | :03:24.
The charity says that many are reporting the crisis is far | :03:25. | :03:28.
worse than the one in 2011 - in which a quarter of | :03:29. | :03:31.
The shipment from Oxfordshire includes one and a half | :03:32. | :03:36.
A food bank in Aylesbury says demand has gone up by around 50% | :03:37. | :03:41.
It's fed nearly 750 people in that time. | :03:42. | :03:47.
Each box provides three days' worth of food for people in crisis. | :03:48. | :03:51.
Adina Campbell has been to visit the warehouse where the food | :03:52. | :03:53.
A new delivery for these volunteers to unload. | :03:54. | :03:59.
Three days a week, they come here to this warehouse in Aylesbury, | :04:00. | :04:02.
to sort and package up food boxes for those in need. | :04:03. | :04:08.
You only need something to go wrong, like you need a car to work, | :04:09. | :04:12.
You have enough money for food or to repair the car. | :04:13. | :04:22.
We would then give them the food for that week | :04:23. | :04:24.
There are a handful of food banks in the Aylesbury area. | :04:25. | :04:28.
But this is the only one supported by the Trussell Trust, | :04:29. | :04:31.
a national network helping people below the poverty line. | :04:32. | :04:33.
I'm actually homeless, living in a toilet, | :04:34. | :04:38.
On the dole, not having a job, being homeless... | :04:39. | :04:51.
Without the food banks, do you think you would go hungry? | :04:52. | :04:54.
The Aylesbury Foodbank opened exactly one year ago and says | :04:55. | :05:04.
demand has doubled during that period. | :05:05. | :05:06.
It's fed more than 500 adults and 200 children. | :05:07. | :05:12.
As you can see, this warehouse is jam-packed | :05:13. | :05:15.
and all the supplies have been divided up to ensure | :05:16. | :05:18.
the sorting process is as quick and easy as possible. | :05:19. | :05:26.
At the moment, there are more than four tons of food, | :05:27. | :05:29.
enough to supply 200 families for three days. | :05:30. | :05:31.
There are a number of check points across Aylesbury where boxes | :05:32. | :05:34.
are dropped off and collected, like this church. | :05:35. | :05:37.
But there is some paperwork involved. | :05:38. | :05:42.
People have to get a voucher from Citizens Advice | :05:43. | :05:44.
or the police, job centre, a similar organisation, | :05:45. | :05:51.
and bring it along to somebody like More Plus | :05:52. | :05:54.
Back at the warehouse, it's a meticulous operation, | :05:55. | :05:59.
Each box is enough to feed a single person or family | :06:00. | :06:04.
When you see large families and you | :06:05. | :06:10.
are providing multiple boxes for a | :06:11. | :06:12.
weeks' worth of food, it can be | :06:13. | :06:20.
quite alarming, when you are packing so little into a box but is crucial | :06:21. | :06:23.
Transporting boxes using personal cars will soon be | :06:24. | :06:26.
A recent donation means the foodbank now has enough money | :06:27. | :06:29.
Making deliveries more efficient and a greater number of people aware | :06:30. | :06:34.
Work's starting on a new 20 million pound multi storey car park | :06:35. | :06:44.
It will increase the number of spaces | :06:45. | :06:53.
at Foxhall Road by two thirds - to 1800. | :06:54. | :06:55.
The first phase of construction will start this moonth - | :06:56. | :06:57.
The work - which includes a covered walkway to the station - | :06:58. | :07:01.
They're the flying visitors that no-one wants. | :07:02. | :07:05.
English Heritage says the number of clothes moths has doubled | :07:06. | :07:08.
in the past five years, and stately homes like | :07:09. | :07:10.
Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire are particularly at risk. | :07:11. | :07:14.
Waddesdon Manor is a magnet for tourists, | :07:15. | :07:19.
but not all of the visitors here are welcome. | :07:20. | :07:25.
Left to their own devices, they can cause all kinds of damage. | :07:26. | :07:32.
Houses like this are full of textiles of the kind that Home | :07:33. | :07:44.
Office just -- that moths really low. We have curtains, tapestries, | :07:45. | :07:51.
felt on billiard tables. All sorts of things that are tempting to them. | :07:52. | :07:54.
Clothes moths are not only a problem in stately homes. | :07:55. | :07:56.
They've probably get their eye on your property too. | :07:57. | :07:59.
English Heritage is researching the spread of the insects. | :08:00. | :08:01.
The charity's giving out free traps, and wants people to tell | :08:02. | :08:03.
Clothes moths like warm temperatures and we've seen an increase in the | :08:04. | :08:17.
general temperature which is helping them. We are putting our central | :08:18. | :08:21.
heating on more in our properties and at home so if it's warmer | :08:22. | :08:28.
throughout the year, you can have three life cycles throughout the | :08:29. | :08:29.
year so far more moths. Even the exhibits at Oxford's | :08:30. | :08:31.
Natural History museum aren't safe. Clothes moths have attacked the | :08:32. | :08:34.
fur of this fox but staff here say You need to make them as | :08:35. | :08:43.
uncomfortable as possible. This means removing their food sources. | :08:44. | :08:50.
Give your house deep clean, behind the cupboards, under the bed, vacuum | :08:51. | :08:55.
all the places you don't usually touch. If you want to preserve | :08:56. | :09:00.
special items, but I'm in a bag and put them in the freezer. | :09:01. | :09:02.
Regular vacuuming is doing the trick at Waddesdon but the bad news | :09:03. | :09:05.
is that a new species of the insect, | :09:06. | :09:07.
called the Pale Backed Clothes Moth, | :09:08. | :09:08.
Before we go - the story of a tiny kitten, a hotel and dramatic rescue. | :09:09. | :09:18.
Tatty had become trapped in the wall of a cottage at the Swan Hotel | :09:19. | :09:22.
Staff smashed down part of the wall to rescue her. | :09:23. | :09:29.
They say it's a mystery how she got in there. | :09:30. | :09:32.
Tatty is thought to be two to three weeks old - | :09:33. | :09:34.
and is being cared for at the Blue Cross in Buford. | :09:35. | :09:39.
A very big adventure for a very small kitten. | :09:40. | :09:41.
A high of 15 Celsius across the region. | :09:42. | :09:59.
There will be more cloud tomorrow and the next few days. | :10:00. | :10:01.
Generally, at first overnight tonight, clearing skies | :10:02. | :10:03.
but the cloud will increase from the north through the course | :10:04. | :10:05.
of the night and temperatures will dip away to around seven | :10:06. | :10:08.
In the countryside, we could see a low of 4-5 C. | :10:09. | :10:12.
Tomorrow, a lot more cloud than today and as a result | :10:13. | :10:15.
There will also be one or two brighter spells. | :10:16. | :10:24.
There is a chance of the odd spot of rain during the afternoon. | :10:25. | :10:27.
Temperatures reaching a high of 12-13 Celsius, | :10:28. | :10:31.
which is around average for this time of year. | :10:32. | :10:34.
Now, through the course of Thursday, a good deal of cloud but some | :10:35. | :10:37.
brighter spells to be had as well and Thursday should be mainly dry. | :10:38. | :10:40.
Winds will fall lighter with an area of high pressure | :10:41. | :10:42.
The day will be mainly dry, that's also the case on Friday | :10:43. | :10:46.
but there is the risk on Friday that we could have the | :10:47. | :10:49.
As we look ahead to the weekend, Good Friday will be dry, | :10:50. | :10:53.
Over the next few days, one or two brighter spells, | :10:54. | :10:58.
the chance of the odd shower but most places will remain dry. | :10:59. | :11:05.
On Sunday, on the cool side for East itself. | :11:06. | :11:13.
Good evening. Grace of all it -- it is greatest of all in Scotland. A | :11:14. | :11:26.
weather front is on the move. The rain edging down into south-western | :11:27. | :11:30.
parts of Scotland and northern Ireland. Much of England and Wales | :11:31. | :11:37.
will have a dry note but not quite as Chile to start tomorrow. Let's | :11:38. | :11:40.
deal with the wet weather first thing tomorrow. It will be a damp | :11:41. | :11:44.
start for Scotland and Northern Ireland. Heaviest rain on the hills | :11:45. | :11:52.
towards the coast and east of the Pennines, not too much rain at all. | :11:53. | :11:56. |
