Syria? And we speak to Howard Jakonson on his novel about Donald

:00:00.3:59:59

Trump. Here on BBC One, it's time Coming up: Losing lifestock

:00:00.:00:00.

because of dog attacks. The growing number of sheep

:00:00.:00:08.

being killed or injured by pets that Oxfordshire's new chief fire officer

:00:09.:00:11.

tells us he wants more women And from 24 Celsius yesterday, to a

:00:12.:00:31.

cooler day-to-day. What weather shortly.

:00:32.:00:36.

Farmers in Oxfordshire are reporting a growing number of attacks

:00:37.:00:40.

In some cases, sheep have been killed

:00:41.:00:46.

or so badly injured they have to be put down.

:00:47.:00:49.

The insurer, NFU Mutual, says the amount it's paid out

:00:50.:00:51.

in claims has quadrupled in the last year.

:00:52.:00:57.

It's asking dog walkers to keep their pets on leads in fields.

:00:58.:00:59.

It was so badly chewed and mutilated that he had to shoot it.

:01:00.:01:08.

Sheep worrying is a growing problem for farmer Edmund Strainge.

:01:09.:01:12.

His flock's been attacked by dogs six times in the past seven years.

:01:13.:01:19.

One ewe had to be put down after the latest, last month.

:01:20.:01:21.

The worst thing about keeping sheep is to see this.

:01:22.:01:32.

But you should be able to control this.

:01:33.:01:41.

The insurer NFU Mutual paid out more than ?6,000

:01:42.:01:43.

That's compared with just over ?1,400 the previous year.

:01:44.:01:50.

There are a number of factors involved.

:01:51.:02:03.

One is that people with dogs today often are from urban areas and they

:02:04.:02:07.

dont have close links to countryside as they would have

:02:08.:02:09.

They simply don't realise the that there's the risk that a dog,

:02:10.:02:13.

which obviously goes back through its heritage

:02:14.:02:15.

It's a criminal offence for dogs to worry sheep on agricultural land.

:02:16.:02:19.

Owners can be fined up to ?1000, have their dogs confiscated

:02:20.:02:22.

by the police or council and in the worst cases,

:02:23.:02:24.

where a farmer may believe that a flock may be at risk,

:02:25.:02:27.

One magazine said most owners know the risks.

:02:28.:02:47.

Mr Strainge is now focused on looking after the rest of his flock.

:02:48.:02:53.

He hopes telling his story might prevent further

:02:54.:02:55.

A man from High Wycombe will serve at least 24 years in prison

:02:56.:03:04.

Ahsan Hassan killed 20-year-old Zofia Sadowska

:03:05.:03:11.

at a disused kebab shop, before taking her body back

:03:12.:03:13.

Police say he was consumed with jealousy.

:03:14.:03:21.

Police are investigating a suspected rape in Banbury town centre.

:03:22.:03:28.

A woman in her 30s says she was attacked and raped

:03:29.:03:31.

inside a house in Horse Fair, in the early hours

:03:32.:03:33.

A 35-year-old man from Banbury has been questioned

:03:34.:03:36.

It's been revealed that the trust that runs Oxfordshire's hospitals

:03:37.:03:40.

was targeted by cyber criminals in five separate attacks last year.

:03:41.:03:44.

No patient data was compromised and the attack levels

:03:45.:03:46.

But figures from NHS Digital show the number of cyber attacks

:03:47.:03:52.

on hospital trusts in England have more than tripled in

:03:53.:03:54.

The head of cyber security for the Oxford Trust

:03:55.:03:58.

says hackers are likely to increase their attacks,

:03:59.:04:00.

as patient records are moved from paper

:04:01.:04:02.

Oxfordshire's new Chief Fire Officer is calling for more women

:04:03.:04:09.

Simon Furlong says he wants his service to better reflect society.

:04:10.:04:14.

He's already planning recruitment drives to employ more women

:04:15.:04:16.

Some of the biggest challenges for me are improving

:04:17.:04:31.

I really want this organisation to reflect the communities

:04:32.:04:34.

that we serve, both in gender representation and also from BME.

:04:35.:04:37.

So ethnic minorities and black and Asian communities.

:04:38.:04:39.

We really want to represent the diverse communities

:04:40.:04:41.

We have got to step up our game here, carry on more positive action

:04:42.:04:48.

and I think there is sort of a short, medium term

:04:49.:04:51.

We need to learn from the military who have done a great job

:04:52.:04:56.

They have really improved their diversity, especially around

:04:57.:04:59.

What do you think women might be able to bring

:05:00.:05:04.

One is it allows us to understand our communities more,

:05:05.:05:12.

we can design services which meet the needs.

:05:13.:05:14.

Whether it is gender, ethnic minorities, whatever

:05:15.:05:15.

So we're really understanding the needs of the community.

:05:16.:05:24.

As a white male, I can never understand those needs,

:05:25.:05:26.

so it is about helping us design services.

:05:27.:05:28.

And being representative of the communities where here to serve.

:05:29.:05:30.

Possibly recruitment drives in the future?

:05:31.:05:34.

Yes, we are looking properly next year for the first

:05:35.:05:36.

time in about five years, we will be recruiting

:05:37.:05:39.

full-time firefighters, so keep your eyes peeled.

:05:40.:05:40.

We will be advertising have a go days and positive action events.

:05:41.:05:44.

The public will always hear cuts to the emergency services,

:05:45.:05:47.

is that something that people here in Oxfordshire need

:05:48.:05:49.

There is less money in the public purse.

:05:50.:05:53.

We understand that, so what we have got to do is do things more

:05:54.:05:57.

We do that by working together, working in partnership

:05:58.:05:59.

and collaborating with both the police, Thames Valley Police

:06:00.:06:02.

and south-central ambulance and looking at opportunities.

:06:03.:06:04.

We are doing co-responding for the Ambulance Service and we're

:06:05.:06:10.

We've got sites at Carterton, Farringdon.

:06:11.:06:12.

So we have got to look at every opportunity to be more reflective,

:06:13.:06:19.

more efficient and provide value for money for the

:06:20.:06:22.

Major road works have started on one of the main routes into Swindon,

:06:23.:06:27.

The work on Akers Way will last 20-weeks

:06:28.:06:30.

and will see sections of the road closed to traffic.

:06:31.:06:36.

At the moment there are road works between St Mary's Church roundabout

:06:37.:06:39.

and Cheney Manor industrial estate, which will continue

:06:40.:06:41.

Candidates for the upcoming Oxfordshire County Council elections

:06:42.:06:45.

Residents must register by Thursday to be eligible to vote.

:06:46.:06:50.

Earlier, I spoke to our political reporter Bethan Phillips

:06:51.:06:52.

and I asked her if we could expect any surprises in who's standing.

:06:53.:06:57.

I think what stands out is who's not up for election.

:06:58.:07:01.

There's a total of 18 councillors who've decided to call it a day,

:07:02.:07:05.

some who have served as councillors for a very long time indeed.

:07:06.:07:08.

It's also interesting to look at who is putting up candidates.

:07:09.:07:12.

There was real local election success across

:07:13.:07:14.

But they didn't win any seats in Oxfordshire.

:07:15.:07:18.

Then of course, the county voted overall to remain in the EU.

:07:19.:07:21.

And I think that might well be part of the reason that Ukip is only

:07:22.:07:26.

standing this time in 11 of the 63 divisions in Oxfordshire.

:07:27.:07:29.

What can we expect on election night?

:07:30.:07:32.

It was very close last time around - so probably a tense night

:07:33.:07:35.

The Conservatives don't have an overall majority at the moment -

:07:36.:07:40.

So they'll be hoping to pick up some extra seats.

:07:41.:07:42.

Whereas the other main parties - Labour, the Lib Dems, the Greens -

:07:43.:07:45.

will all be looking to try and stop that from happening.

:07:46.:07:48.

For voters, you've only got until Thursday to register.

:07:49.:07:50.

As always there's been a push to encourage students to sign up,

:07:51.:07:54.

a big student population in Oxford, and they're not always known

:07:55.:07:56.

for being very organised and registering to vote

:07:57.:07:58.

But Oxford University Students Union says it's important that students -

:07:59.:08:04.

and other residents - have their say.

:08:05.:08:06.

I think they are certainly interested in the issues.

:08:07.:08:08.

Once we make the connection for them between the issues that

:08:09.:08:11.

they're interested in and these elections, then suddenly you get

:08:12.:08:13.

people who are interested and passionate about voting.

:08:14.:08:16.

We also have elections coming up for Wiltshire Council

:08:17.:08:19.

and Buckinghamshire County Council - each of the council website has

:08:20.:08:22.

Gold bars thought to worth ?2 million have been found

:08:23.:08:34.

inside the engine of an old military tank bought on eBay.

:08:35.:08:36.

Nick Mead, who lives near Brackley, discovered five gold bars

:08:37.:08:40.

which weigh around five kilograms each hidden inside the tank

:08:41.:08:42.

The tank is thought to have belonged to Iraqi forces during the Gulf War.

:08:43.:08:50.

Nick won't benefit from the gold it's been taken away

:08:51.:08:52.

We're back in BBC Breakfast tomorrow morning, but for now goodnight

:08:53.:08:59.

and with the weather here's Alexis Green.

:09:00.:09:04.

Today was certainly a lot cooler than yesterday.

:09:05.:09:07.

It was the warmest day of the week so far.

:09:08.:09:09.

This week, there will be a good deal of dry weather.

:09:10.:09:12.

Temperatures will be around average, 13 to 15 Celsius,

:09:13.:09:14.

and there will be a lot of dry weather over the weekend.

:09:15.:09:20.

So as we head through tonight, the clear skies

:09:21.:09:24.

will develop the cloud melting away and temperatures will fall to about

:09:25.:09:27.

There may be patchy fog, even pockets of frost first thing

:09:28.:09:37.

These are temperatures in urban areas.

:09:38.:09:39.

A dry day tomorrow, lots of sunshine on

:09:40.:09:41.

Maybe a lot of cloud to start the day.

:09:42.:09:44.

Mist and fog will clear and through the afternoon, any sunny

:09:45.:09:47.

spells could reach a highs of around 13, maybe up to 14 Celsius.

:09:48.:09:50.

Very similar to today's temperatures.

:09:51.:09:51.

There will be a breeze coming in from the west.

:09:52.:09:53.

Tomorrow evening, we are looking at patchy cloud.

:09:54.:09:55.

So we will be looking at clear skies, but

:09:56.:09:58.

through the early hours of the morning temperatures will take a dip

:09:59.:10:00.

in the countryside at around three or four Celsius.

:10:01.:10:03.

Through Wednesday, it is going to be breezy, but are quite

:10:04.:10:06.

Some brighter spells here and there, but also the

:10:07.:10:09.

Not amounting to too much and many places

:10:10.:10:13.

Not amounting to too much and many places will stay dry with height

:10:14.:10:16.

Thursday, the winds will fall lighter, it should be a mainly dry

:10:17.:10:20.

day and pleasant in any sunny spells.

:10:21.:10:22.

Temperatures could reach a highs of 12 to 14 Celsius which is

:10:23.:10:25.

around average for this time of year.

:10:26.:10:27.

Friday is a similar scenario to Thursday.

:10:28.:10:28.

The chance of some rain after dark on Friday, but generally

:10:29.:10:40.

most of the day the majority of the day will stay dry.

:10:41.:10:42.

It is after dark, patchy rain is expected on Friday

:10:43.:10:45.

evening and as we look ahead to the Easter weekend, a lot of dry

:10:46.:10:48.

weather, especially through Good Friday,

:10:49.:10:49.

Most places will stay dry you will be unlucky if you do catch

:10:50.:10:57.

Lots of dry weather for the Easter weekend.

:10:58.:11:06.

Good evening. Let's cut to the chase the first big holiday weekend of the

:11:07.:11:19.

year is on the horizon and if you consider last weekend as a taster

:11:20.:11:23.

for the summer, this weekend is not looking too bad. It will be a bit

:11:24.:11:27.

cooler, temperatures this week and closer to where they should be at

:11:28.:11:30.

this time of the year thanks to the north-west breed and the reason for

:11:31.:11:35.

that, if we look at the jet stream, coming across the Atlantic pushing

:11:36.:11:39.

from north to south -- north-west breeze. It separates the high

:11:40.:11:45.

pressure and low price and it allows the northerly airflow to develop. It

:11:46.:11:48.

means there will be some showers going into Easter weekend but they

:11:49.:11:54.

will only be a small portion of the weekend wherever you are and there

:11:55.:11:56.

will be some dry weather and when the sun is out, it is getting

:11:57.:12:00.

stronger so it will negate some of the chill. Without the sunshine it

:12:01.:12:06.

will be chilly at night and that is the case tonight,

:12:07.:12:09.
