Good evening, I'm Caroline Richardson. How do you tackle any

future flood crisis which threatens to wreak havoc across the South

Today, 150 councillors gathdred to discuss the lessons learnt from a

winter they will never forgdt. They came from all over Oxfordshhre, from

parish to county level, to swap ideas and discuss the impact of the

recent floods. The county council wants to take the best ideas and

suggestions and put them into practice. We have put ?400,000 in

our budget to help with homd protection or flood schemes or

anything else that the people in this room tell me would be ` good

idea. I hope we will get thd best bang for our buck.

Further down the Thames, thd Environment Agency and Thamds Water

have been meeting with families in Lower Earley near Reading to discuss

how to tackle continuing problems with sewage. Effluent has overflowed

three times in the last two months, pouring into gardens and under

homes. For Graham's sons, the lawn in their

home is currently out of botnds Sewage has leaked from their

neighbourhood drains four thmes since Christmas and flooded into

back gardens. The water is dirty. You can see that there is sddiment

and stuff in the water, so ht is not pleasant and goes everywherd. When

it drains away, all the scul sediment stays, so the garddns are

contaminated. Thames water said there had been similar problems in

many areas. Yesterday, residents met with Thames Water, the Environment

Agency and the borough council. A number of actions were agredd in the

end to investigate the links between offence and failures of somd of the

sewage pumps, necessary to take sewage away. Thames Water s`id there

is no blockage of the brain it `` drainage system.

Police have been questioning four people today after a suspected sham

marriage was halted in Hampshire. Home Office immigration enforcement

officers arrested a 21`year`old French woman and a 26`year`old

Cameroonian man moments before they were due to tie the knot at

Winchester Register Office yesterday. A 29`year`old man and a

30`year`old man have also bden arrested.

In the past hour, a public leeting has begun into controversial plans

for two temporary stopping sites for gypsy and traveller communities in

Poole. The proposed sites, `t Creekmoor and Oakdale, have been

widely opposed by local grotps. Poole Council says they need the

sites so that they can tackle the problem of unauthorised enc`mpments

in the area. Many schools in the South s`y that

changes to free school meals are causing problems because thdy're

struggling to find enough dhning space. All pupils at infant schools

in England are to get free school lunches from the start of the school

year this September. The ch`nge for children in reception, years one and

two, will save parents about ?4 0 a year per child.

Now football, and Southampton's match against Liverpool kicked off

about half an hour ago at St Mary's. Saints are currently behind

following a goal from Suarez in the 16th minute. In League One, Swindon

had to settle for a draw aw`y to Crewe while MK Dons lost to

Sheffield United. In the Championship, there was a

comprehensive five`goal win from Bournemouth against Doncastdr.

Brighton beat Millwall whild at the Madejski Stadium, Reading and Yeovil

took a goal apiece. The Football League Show has all the goals

tonight. And on Monday night, Late Kick Off returns for a new series

through until the end of thd season which will have highlights of

Portsmouth's game against Chesterfield.

Some of ours saw lovely blud skies today, but now cloud is thickening.

That might bring suspects and spots of rain to the night. We cotld see

early frost. As the breeze picks up, that should clear. We start tomorrow

morning on a cloudy node. P`tchy rain through the morning but that

rain turns heavy and persistent from the West. Highs tomorrow and eight `

10 degrees. Next week, a mixture of sunny spells and rain showers.
