A workman is recovering in Southampton General Hospital today

after the digger he was operating toppled into the sea off Portland. A

Coastguard helicopter crew winched the man to safety yesterday

afternoon from the water at Castletown. It is believed the

digger fell from a 20`foot wall. His injuries are serious, but not

life`threatening. A leading Liberal Democrat in the

South has defended the local party's decision not to stand against

Portsmouth South MP Mike Hancock, even though he has been suspended

problem on extreme wet weather conditions and said they were

working to improve things. Birds that were rescued along the

Dorset coast during the recent storms have been released. Hundreds

were washed up dead on the region's beaches, but the survivors have been

cared for by the RSPCA. The charity thinks pollutants have been churned

up from the sea bed. They were taken to an existing colony where it's

hoped they will thrive. We hope they will be able to

integrate within the colony. We know that they are feeding well. We have

been assessing them on the water for the last couple of weeks. We know

they are fully waterproof, so they should be able to compete out in the

wild.
