Hello, I'm Jo Kent with the news here in the south.

:00:12.:00:14.

The Debenhams department store in Portsmouth has apologised

:00:15.:00:17.

after a homeless man, who was sleeping outside

:00:18.:00:19.

on Boxing Day, had his bedding drenched with water

:00:20.:00:22.

The store says it was an accident, but there has been an angry reaction

:00:23.:00:28.

from many in Portsmouth, as Roger Finn reports.

:00:29.:00:33.

Russell Allen was sleeping in a doorway at Debenhams

:00:34.:00:35.

in Portsmouth, on Boxing Day morning, when he was woken

:00:36.:00:37.

by a security guard and told to move on.

:00:38.:00:41.

Sneaky little comment as he walked away.

:00:42.:00:43.

I argued back, said to him, there's no need to be like this, you

:00:44.:00:47.

don't realise what people are going through.

:00:48.:00:48.

He just continued being rude, walked off.

:00:49.:00:51.

I've gone to pack up all my bedding and whatnot,

:00:52.:00:54.

lifted up my sheet and it's absolutely soaking, and I don't mean

:00:55.:00:56.

just a little bit - it was absolutely drenched.

:00:57.:01:00.

There was an outpouring of sympathy on social media,

:01:01.:01:02.

We could all be in that situation one day, who knows?

:01:03.:01:14.

I think it's awful, to be honest with

:01:15.:01:16.

I don't know how, with the Christmas spirit,

:01:17.:01:23.

I've been homeless over the years myself and I wouldn't

:01:24.:01:27.

In a statement, Debenhams say they take

:01:28.:01:30.

this matter seriously and have investigated it.

:01:31.:01:32.

They say it was an unfortunate accident, in which some

:01:33.:01:34.

routine cleaning on the inside of the fire exit resulted in the

:01:35.:01:37.

gentleman's property on the outside of the fire exit becoming wet.

:01:38.:01:40.

Debenhams have apologised to Russel Allen and provided him

:01:41.:01:43.

But there have been threats against members of their staff

:01:44.:01:48.

and one local councillor, who has been homeless himself,

:01:49.:01:51.

This isn't just about this incident - it's

:01:52.:01:55.

And it's an opportunity for us to raise awareness for the homeless

:01:56.:02:00.

and hopefully bring the business sector a bit closer to working

:02:01.:02:04.

with us for the greater understanding of the homeless.

:02:05.:02:12.

A man's appeared in court in Portsmouth charged

:02:13.:02:14.

with manslaughter, following the death of a man

:02:15.:02:16.

57-year-old father of two Nick Medlin, a prison

:02:17.:02:21.

officer at Parkhurst, was pronounced dead at the Rose Inn

:02:22.:02:24.

on Pier Street in the town, in the early hours of the morning.

:02:25.:02:27.

32-year-old Michael Hudson, of no fixed address, has been

:02:28.:02:30.

charged with his manslaughter, and was remanded in custody.

:02:31.:02:34.

He'll appear at Winchester Crown Court in January.

:02:35.:02:38.

St Mary's hospital on the Isle of Wight remains on black alert

:02:39.:02:41.

today, meaning planned operations are being cancelled after very high

:02:42.:02:44.

But the operations director's told the BBC, this morning,

:02:45.:02:49.

the pressure has eased slightly with extra nurses and doctors

:02:50.:02:52.

being brought in to deal with demand, and more

:02:53.:02:54.

The outgoing chief executive in charge of three of Hampshire's

:02:55.:03:00.

hospitals, has spoken about the difficult times facing

:03:01.:03:04.

the health service as she comes to the end of 40 years working

:03:05.:03:07.

Mary Edwards is responsible for Hampshire Hospitals Trust,

:03:08.:03:11.

with sites in Winchester, Andover and Basingstoke.

:03:12.:03:15.

She's been speaking to our reporter, Joe Campbell.

:03:16.:03:22.

Mary Edwards isn't saying goodbye just yet,

:03:23.:03:25.

but come the New Year this will no longer be one

:03:26.:03:27.

That doesn't stop her noting the emergency department here hasn't

:03:28.:03:33.

been spruced up under the last three Prime Ministers.

:03:34.:03:36.

Really we ought to be investing in new lifts so we didn't

:03:37.:03:40.

have to keep repairing, but each lift is probably up to ?250,000 and

:03:41.:03:46.

at the moment we can't prioritise that above other things.

:03:47.:03:52.

One priority will be keeping overseas staff,

:03:53.:03:54.

many of whom have been unsettled by the past year's events.

:03:55.:03:57.

So what does she say to those negotiating Brexit?

:03:58.:04:00.

I would be asking them to do their best to try and

:04:01.:04:03.

make sure we don't destabilise those people who work in an

:04:04.:04:07.

We need staff from overseas, and we need them to feel

:04:08.:04:12.

Soon there will be a new picture hanging here and, after

:04:13.:04:16.

forking out a hefty sum for health care to visit family

:04:17.:04:19.

in Australia and the US, on her retirement Mary Edwards

:04:20.:04:23.

for one remains convinced the NHS is still a bit of a bargain.

:04:24.:04:31.

Onto football, and Southampton will not appeal against the decision

:04:32.:04:34.

to send off Nathan Redmond in last night's 4-1 home

:04:35.:04:37.

defeat against Spurs, despite their manager Claude Puel's

:04:38.:04:40.

belief that referee Mike Dean got it wrong.

:04:41.:04:43.

Redmond was red carded for this challenge on Dele Alli,

:04:44.:04:46.

Saints had taken the early lead in the game through

:04:47.:04:51.

But though Harry Kane missed the penalty awarded

:04:52.:04:55.

when Redmond was sent off, Spurs went on to win the match

:04:56.:04:58.

Now if you've ever tried to hula hoop you may have found

:04:59.:05:06.

But a little girl from Oxford has really mastered it.

:05:07.:05:10.

Poppy Campion decided to use her hula hooping talents

:05:11.:05:12.

Thousands of pounds have now been pledged, for a charity

:05:13.:05:17.

As Jeremy Stern reports, Poppy had the idea after her

:05:18.:05:22.

It's an unusual skill that is tricky to master.

:05:23.:05:31.

Nine-year-old Poppy says it's all in the hips, and set herself

:05:32.:05:35.

a target of hula hooping for 30 minutes.

:05:36.:05:39.

I have never really had people watching me doing hula

:05:40.:05:44.

hooping, I have never really had the encouragement for it.

:05:45.:05:51.

I do it but I just never thought I was...

:05:52.:05:53.

Poppy has raised ?2500 for the Oxford charity

:05:54.:06:00.

Seesaw, which supports children who have suffered a loss.

:06:01.:06:06.

In March, Poppy lost her grandfather - ex Royal Marine Graham Campion.

:06:07.:06:11.

She was the light of his life from the moment she was born.

:06:12.:06:19.

They both loved each other very dearly and she made him

:06:20.:06:22.

feel so much better when she would visit him

:06:23.:06:24.

in hospital, as she did most days.

:06:25.:06:26.

People can still donate online through her Justgiving page.

:06:27.:06:39.

Now let's take a look at the weather, with Dan Downs.

:06:40.:06:42.

We're seeing a few subtle changes in our weather as we

:06:43.:06:46.

The high pressure which has brought us a couple of settled days is

:06:47.:06:51.

slipping away to the south, the isobars squeezing up behind it,

:06:52.:06:54.

And then this weather front's moving down,

:06:55.:06:57.

bringing us rather cloudy conditions to start the New Year,

:06:58.:06:59.

Behind that, though, it does turn a lot clearer and colder.

:07:00.:07:03.

Tonight we're seeing the return of a lot of fog patches

:07:04.:07:06.

around, maybe not quite as dense as the past couple of nights,

:07:07.:07:09.

with a bit more breeze around, but it will be a cold night,

:07:10.:07:12.

quite a widespread frost, as temperatures dip towards

:07:13.:07:14.

Tomorrow, a much cloudy day than today.

:07:15.:07:18.

We start off rather cold and foggy again, and then one

:07:19.:07:21.

or two breaks are possible but generally a lot more cloud around

:07:22.:07:24.

and not feeling particularly warm - a bit more of a breeze around, and

:07:25.:07:27.

temperatures of around 7 or 8 degrees.

:07:28.:07:29.

As we end the year it stays rather cloudy through Saturday.

:07:30.:07:34.

Milder than recent days, though - temperatures just scraping into

:07:35.:07:36.

But it turns rather damp to start New Year's Day, before

:07:37.:07:40.

brightening up later, and then colder but clearer

:07:41.:07:43.

There's more on the BBC News website.

:07:44.:07:49.

Our next programme is tonight at 11:10pm.

:07:50.:07:52.

Temperatures have dropped away shortly and we have seen some fog,

:07:53.:08:23.

particularly through the Midlands. We do have some clout drifting in

:08:24.:08:27.

from the west. By the end of the night, towards the East Midlands as

:08:28.:08:33.

well. Further north, more of a breeze from the south-west, bringing

:08:34.:08:37.

in a weather front. Keeping the temperatures at seven or 8 degrees.

:08:38.:08:42.

Freezing or just below to the south-east corner. Fog will live to

:08:43.:08:45.

low cloud and generally speaking a lot more cloud than we saw today.

:08:46.:08:49.

Northern Scotland is the focal point for wet and windy weather. Confined

:08:50.:08:53.

to the north and west of Scotland where temperatures will be quite

:08:54.:08:58.

mild, ten or 11 degrees for Glasgow,

:08:59.:08:59.
