Hello, I'm Anjana Gadgil with the news here in the South. | :00:15. | :00:16.
17 people were taken to hospital this morning after a coach | :00:17. | :00:19.
overturned on a motorway slip road in Oxfordshire. | :00:20. | :00:22.
It happened on the northbound exit at Junction 7 of the M40, | :00:23. | :00:25.
Thick fog made access to the scene more difficult, | :00:26. | :00:28.
and the slip road itself was closed for several hours. | :00:29. | :00:31.
Passengers escaped in such a hurry they left their belongings behind. | :00:32. | :00:46.
16 adults plus the coach driver were taken | :00:47. | :00:48.
to the John Radcliffe Hospital after last night's crash. | :00:49. | :00:50.
We had to stabilise the coach to prevent it sliding down the bank | :00:51. | :00:53.
any further and from rocking from side to side, to make sure | :00:54. | :00:56.
Then we had to search the immediate area for anybody that may have been | :00:57. | :01:01.
ejected from the vehicle, so we used thermal imaging cameras, | :01:02. | :01:03.
we used some of our remote cameras we have there, | :01:04. | :01:07.
we had a period of using audible detection, so we needed | :01:08. | :01:09.
There was thick fog just before 3am, when the Heathrow Express bus came | :01:10. | :01:21.
It went crashing through the barriers and flipped. | :01:22. | :01:25.
Certainly it would have been a chaotic scene. | :01:26. | :01:27.
You've got people inside who are probably wanting to get out | :01:28. | :01:30.
Also their medical welfare needs to be taken into account, | :01:31. | :01:33.
and sometimes getting them out quickly isn't necessarily | :01:34. | :01:35.
Two things that we are looking into, obviously keeping an open mind, | :01:36. | :01:40.
but the two main things are very foggy at the time and the driving | :01:41. | :01:43.
conditions and the fact that the bus wouldn't normally be leaving | :01:44. | :01:46.
It's not the first time a coach has veered off | :01:47. | :01:50.
This on-board footage from 2010 shows the moment when an Oxford Tube | :01:51. | :01:58.
bus crashed at the very same slip road. | :01:59. | :02:03.
The slip road was closed while barriers were prepared here today. | :02:04. | :02:14.
The Oxford Bus Company has been contacting passengers this afternoon | :02:15. | :02:16.
and as foggy conditions remain investigations are continuing | :02:17. | :02:18.
to try to work out how this crash happened. | :02:19. | :02:23.
The fog has caused travel problems across the region today. | :02:24. | :02:26.
Poor visibility on the coast - this view | :02:27. | :02:30.
across Poole Bay was typical - badly affected the ferries. | :02:31. | :02:33.
Wightlink services between Lymington and Yarmouth and Red Funnel | :02:34. | :02:36.
crossings between Southampton and East Cowes were suspended, with | :02:37. | :02:38.
There have also been delays and cancellations for flights | :02:39. | :02:44.
to and from Gatwick, Heathrow and Southampton airports. | :02:45. | :02:49.
And football has fallen victim to the fog as well - | :02:50. | :02:51.
Brighton's evening Championship match against Cardiff City has been | :02:52. | :02:54.
Elsewhere, the railway line between Eastleigh and Basingstoke | :02:55. | :03:00.
in Hampshire was closed for much of this morning, | :03:01. | :03:03.
after a body was found by the track near Shawford. | :03:04. | :03:08.
Rail replacement buses were laid on and the police say they are not | :03:09. | :03:11.
Meanwhile, Southern Rail is warning of severe disruption | :03:12. | :03:15.
on their network once again, as conductors stage | :03:16. | :03:17.
The company says some routes will have no service | :03:18. | :03:26.
at all tomorrow, New Year's Day and on Monday the 2nd, | :03:27. | :03:28.
while the majority of others will have a very limited service. | :03:29. | :03:31.
It is the biggest night out of the year but many people | :03:32. | :03:37.
are going to struggle to get home afterwards, as the Southern strikes | :03:38. | :03:41.
The RMT insist they are not trying to disrupt | :03:42. | :03:47.
We did cancel the strikes on Christmas Eve and the day | :03:48. | :03:51.
We've done everything we can to recognise that the public have | :03:52. | :03:56.
been wonderful in supporting our position on maintaining | :03:57. | :03:59.
the safety-critical role of the guard on the train. | :04:00. | :04:02.
Once again Southern say they will have to cancel around 50% | :04:03. | :04:05.
Crucially, though, they are warning anyone who is planning to use | :04:06. | :04:11.
the trains to get home after a New Year's night out that | :04:12. | :04:14.
many later services in particular will be completely cancelled. | :04:15. | :04:16.
The conductors are striking over plans to give drivers responsibility | :04:17. | :04:20.
for closing train doors, changing the conductors' roles | :04:21. | :04:22.
Southern said 220 conductors have signed up to the new contract | :04:23. | :04:29.
and many will begin their new roles from the 1st of January. | :04:30. | :04:33.
The proposals we have made are entirely reasonable, | :04:34. | :04:35.
we think the union's reaction has been unreasonable | :04:36. | :04:37.
We think these strikes are absolutely unnecessary | :04:38. | :04:44.
and I would call upon the trade unions to call off these strikes | :04:45. | :04:47.
A six-day drivers' strike is planned from January the 9th and the unions | :04:48. | :04:52.
say they can't rule out further action for 2017 if an | :04:53. | :04:55.
Drink-driving is still a big problem in the region, | :04:56. | :05:02.
In the first two weeks of the Force's Christmas | :05:03. | :05:05.
and New Year crackdown they've arrested more than 140 people. | :05:06. | :05:09.
Additional patrols are being carried out in Berkshire to catch | :05:10. | :05:12.
A Christmas lights display in a Buckinghamshire village has | :05:13. | :05:18.
helped raise money for a girl with a rare health disorder. | :05:19. | :05:22.
Frankie Ross from Pitstone has Rett syndrome, which only affects one | :05:23. | :05:25.
This dazzling display, now in its 20th year, | :05:26. | :05:33.
is raising money for 11-year-old Frankie Ross. | :05:34. | :05:38.
She was diagnosed with Rett syndrome when she was a toddler. | :05:39. | :05:42.
She potentially would lose her speech, lose | :05:43. | :05:44.
purposeful use of her hands, might not be able to walk, | :05:45. | :05:48.
could develop scoliosis, epilepsy, breathing difficulties. | :05:49. | :05:58.
The community in Pitstone had initially been fundraising to buy | :05:59. | :06:01.
a hoist for Frankie for water therapy but thanks to social media | :06:02. | :06:04.
two hoists were donated to the family in the last few weeks. | :06:05. | :06:07.
This year we have had a great campaign and I believe that we have | :06:08. | :06:11.
We all really get on well as neighbours and it was just | :06:12. | :06:15.
the perfect opportunity to pull the stops out for Christmas. | :06:16. | :06:18.
There are so many worthy causes and to think that Frankie's touched | :06:19. | :06:29.
local residents' hearts enough for them to want | :06:30. | :06:31.
to fundraise for her I think is absolutely amazing. | :06:32. | :06:33.
There is no cure for Rett syndrome but Frankie's family hope more | :06:34. | :06:36.
research and funding will help find better treatments in the future. | :06:37. | :06:42.
It's a generally cloudy picture as we end the year | :06:43. | :06:49.
but for most it should stay dry for the New Year festivities. | :06:50. | :06:52.
We are seeing this weather front pushing down | :06:53. | :06:54.
Rather cloudy overnight tonight. arrive until the early hours of New | :06:55. | :07:03.
Again we've got those problems with fog and there is a Met | :07:04. | :07:06.
Office yellow warning in force until ten o'clock tomorrow morning. | :07:07. | :07:09.
With more cloud around overnight tonight | :07:10. | :07:10.
I don't think it will be quite as cold as it was last night | :07:11. | :07:14.
but still the chance of a bit of frost and | :07:15. | :07:18.
indeed those fog patches where we do see any clearer skies. | :07:19. | :07:21.
It should clear away to low cloud fairly swiftly | :07:22. | :07:25.
and one or two breaks possible through the day. | :07:26. | :07:32.
There is also a fair amount of cloud tomorrow, temperatures just about | :07:33. | :07:38.
scraping into double figures the sum of us. Staying cloudy into New | :07:39. | :07:40.
Year's Eve, the rain continues on Year's Eve, the rain continues on | :07:41. | :07:46.
New Year's Day, becoming drier and brighter behind that, but it will | :07:47. | :07:49.
feel that much colder with frosty nights. | :07:50. | :07:53.
I'm back later with more on today's top stories at 10.50 this evening. | :07:54. | :07:58.
If you are heading out on the roads, please take care. | :07:59. | :08:08.
Good evening, fog has been a problem in recent days, slow changes over | :08:09. | :08:15.
the next 48 hours or so as this weather front moves south bringing | :08:16. | :08:18.
rain and behind | :08:19. | :08:19. |
