09/11/2015 Weather for the Week Ahead

Bit of snow around by the end of the week,

but before we get too excited,

it'll be mostly up over the mountains of northern Britain.

Turning a bit chillier, but before that,

plenty more mild weather to come.

Wet and windy weather too,

especially across north-western parts of the UK

beneath the core of this strong jet stream

which will continue to pump rain in our direction in bands

and with each band of rain,

the river catchments get fuller,

so the Met Office working with the Environment Agency

and keeping a very close eye on things.

There will be weather warnings issued for both wind and rain.

Take the wind, for example -

in the morning, very strong crosswinds

across the likes of the A1, the M6,

with gusts of over 60mph in some places,

so take it easy on the roads.

Met Office warnings have been issued.

Very windy, very wet, of course, in some places,

especially over into the west of the Pennines,

parts of Snowdonia as well,

the Southern Uplands, Northern Ireland seeing a lot of heavy rain.

It will brighten up across

the northern half of Scotland, with some sunshine,

though some blustery showers through the afternoon.

The most reliable dry weather

further south and east across England.

Many places here will stay dry and despite the cloud,

another very mild day up into the mid-teens once again.

A bit fresher further north.

As we go through the evening and night,

the rain pushes back northwards again and by Tuesday,

we're kind of back where we started,

with many northern and western areas seeing plenty of rain,

especially up over the high ground, across western areas.

Further south and east, it'll be drier.

A blustery wind again,

but once more, despite the cloud,

it will be another very mild day,

temperatures in one or two places getting up into the high teens.

Again, it'll be fresher across the north of Scotland,

somewhat brighter skies here and for the north-west of Northern Ireland

and by Armistice Day, a bit of a three-way split.

Rain in the middle, some of that quite heavy

and persistent for north-western parts of England and Wales.

Drier on either side,

the best of the brightness across northern areas.

The winds not just as strong.

Now, looking ahead to Thursday,

it could be dry and bright for a time,

with some pleasant sunshine.

We could well see some showery rain developing,

but it's most likely across western Scotland, Northern Ireland

as the next weather front comes steaming in.

Now that weather front actually is going to be quite important.

Ahead of that, the familiar very mild air

pumping up from the tropics.

Behind that, a shot of cold air.

Well, colder air -

you can see by the blue colours -

coming in across the UK.

It's not going to get all that cold.

It's all relative, but it will be

a bit of a shock to the system nonetheless for some of us.

Look at the temperature trends - you can wave goodbye to the 16s and 17s.

By Friday, we'll be down into single figures in some places

and yes, cold enough for some of the white stuff

up over the mountains in the north.

A very windy day, that'll accentuate the chilly feel, with gales,

maybe severe gales in exposed places.

Sunshine and showers.

Most of the showers across the north and the west,

the best of the sunshine further south and east.

Bright start to the weekend, with some sunshine,

albeit feeling quite chilly, but more rain powering in

across the north and the west,

the next Atlantic frontal system coming in.

That will introduce milder air again, though, because south-westerly winds

begin to get entrained and you can see the extent of that rain.

That milder air pushes its way across the whole of the country

through next weekend, so any cold snap as such

isn't going to last very long at all.

Into next week, I think temperatures will be up and down,

but we're set to see a lot more rain, I'm afraid,

so watch out for further warnings.

It'll often be quite windy as well.
