Good evening. This time yesterday, Matt was telling you

0:00:030:00:06

about our first major storm of the season, which has been named Abigail.

0:00:060:00:10

We're naming, this season,

0:00:100:00:12

for those storms which we expect to have a significant impact on the UK.

0:00:120:00:16

And so we're firming up on details and since yesterday

0:00:160:00:19

the warning has been escalated to an amber by the Met Office.

0:00:190:00:21

You can see how ferocious that low pressure looks towards the north

0:00:210:00:24

and west of Scotland - really tightly-packed isobars -

0:00:240:00:27

so the winds are giving us real cause for concern.

0:00:270:00:30

The lack of wind, though, overnight,

0:00:300:00:31

means an unusually chilly start for the glens of Scotland -

0:00:310:00:34

a touch of frost here, some mist and fog elsewhere.

0:00:340:00:36

But actually, the day is shaping up to be quite a decent one

0:00:360:00:39

across central and eastern areas - the calm before the storm.

0:00:390:00:42

These winds that you see in the black discs indicate the gusts of wind,

0:00:420:00:45

already getting up to 50 or 60mph through

0:00:450:00:48

the Irish Sea into the afternoon.

0:00:480:00:50

So gales, or severe gales, starting to develop,

0:00:500:00:53

and coupled with that rain, some pretty miserable conditions

0:00:530:00:56

for a time if you're driving in that spell of rain.

0:00:560:00:58

It should move through quite quickly, giving us

0:00:580:01:01

another 10-20mm of rain for most of us.

0:01:010:01:03

But it's behind that rain band as it's moved out the way that

0:01:030:01:07

the winds escalate further.

0:01:070:01:10

Really very strong winds indeed - violent winds, potentially.

0:01:100:01:13

Storm force across the far north and west of Scotland,

0:01:130:01:16

hence the amber warning of gusts in excess of 80mph.

0:01:160:01:19

But actually, even the Central Lowlands could have gusts of 60,

0:01:190:01:23

possibly 70mph in the far north of Northern Ireland.

0:01:230:01:25

Enough to cause disruption to transport and power lines as well

0:01:250:01:29

and perhaps some structural damage, certainly in the far north.

0:01:290:01:31

Then, as it clears away,

0:01:310:01:33

its parting present is a spell of colder weather, just temporarily.

0:01:330:01:37

Still blowing a gale on Friday across most of the UK and storm-force winds

0:01:370:01:41

battering the north and bringing with them some really chilly air.

0:01:410:01:45

So it may feel like 7-13 on the thermometer -

0:01:450:01:47

rather, it may say that - but it will feel a lot colder.

0:01:470:01:49

And it will be cold enough for a smattering of snow,

0:01:490:01:52

potentially, on the Pennines in Cumbria.

0:01:520:01:54

It shouldn't stick, though.

0:01:540:01:55

Now, behind me we've also got another lump of cloud that we're watching.

0:01:550:01:58

This one here is Abigail, the one behind me

0:01:580:02:01

is Hurricane Kate currently.

0:02:010:02:02

It will weaken significantly before it comes to the shores of the UK but

0:02:020:02:06

that's the next area of low pressure, if you like, that we're watching.

0:02:060:02:10

This is Abigail moving across to Scandinavia.

0:02:100:02:12

As we move into Saturday, we say hello again to low pressure.

0:02:120:02:16

Slightly milder conditions again coming in from the south

0:02:160:02:19

and west, those winds, but an awful lot of rain.

0:02:190:02:22

Because it's of tropical origin, it will have a lot of moisture

0:02:220:02:25

and energy in there to give us some windy weather,

0:02:250:02:27

but the rain is going to cause real concern.

0:02:270:02:30

It has been so wet this week - we've already had flooding issues,

0:02:300:02:32

river levels are high,

0:02:320:02:34

so we need to really watch that on Saturday and Sunday.

0:02:340:02:36

That's after we've been battered by Abigail and had some rain from that,

0:02:360:02:40

because that weather front is still meandering around again on Sunday.

0:02:400:02:44

It looks like central northern areas will bear the brunt of that rain,

0:02:440:02:48

but obviously open to some uncertainty.

0:02:480:02:51

Now, that area of low pressure then moves away again into Monday

0:02:510:02:54

and its trailing weather front moves southwards,

0:02:540:02:56

so temporarily it'll turn just a bit chillier,

0:02:560:02:59

but drier and brighter to the north of that weather front.

0:02:590:03:02

And that's a trend that we're going to see continuing into next week.

0:03:020:03:06

So, by and large it remains unsettled.

0:03:060:03:09

We've got the jet stream,

0:03:090:03:11

those fast-blowing winds in the upper atmosphere which drive

0:03:110:03:13

the weather systems from west to east, generally, sat right above us.

0:03:130:03:16

So we can expect further spells of wet and windy weather,

0:03:160:03:19

but just occasionally some colder air will start to drift

0:03:190:03:22

across the northern half of the country.

0:03:220:03:24

But for most of us, for most of the time, it remains mild.

0:03:240:03:28

There's more details on that storm on the website.

0:03:280:03:31

# These streets are yours You can keep them... #

0:03:330:03:36

You wouldn't have found a doctor down here before.

0:03:360:03:39

Or a banker.

0:03:390:03:41

There's no reason this bonus might not be closer to TWO million.

0:03:410:03:47

I think you need me to come and speak to the police

0:03:470:03:49

about those abusive postcards you told me about.

0:03:490:03:52

I don't think anyone would want what I have.
