Thanks for tuning in to Weather For The Week Ahead.

0:00:030:00:05

A lot happening over the next few days -

0:00:050:00:07

quite a stormy end to Tuesday for some of us,

0:00:070:00:10

but also a very mild one,

0:00:100:00:11

and that's really been the story of November so far.

0:00:110:00:14

Temperatures quite widely across the country

0:00:140:00:16

have been in the mid-teens, but this weekend,

0:00:160:00:18

a big change on the way - quite a bit colder,

0:00:180:00:20

perhaps only 5 degrees for some of us.

0:00:200:00:22

Let's have a look at Storm Barney.

0:00:220:00:23

This is a picture sent in from

0:00:230:00:25

the south of Wales, from Neath,

0:00:250:00:27

as Storm Barney approached,

0:00:270:00:28

whipping up the seas here.

0:00:280:00:30

Gusts in some areas in excess of 80mph.

0:00:300:00:32

Not a very well-formed storm,

0:00:320:00:34

but the winds were very, very strong,

0:00:340:00:36

particularly across the southern flank

0:00:360:00:38

of the area of low pressure as it approached Wales

0:00:380:00:41

during the course of Tuesday evening.

0:00:410:00:44

But early on Wednesday,

0:00:440:00:45

it's much calmer across the country,

0:00:450:00:47

but the weather will go downhill quickly

0:00:470:00:49

across the northwest of the UK,

0:00:490:00:50

got another area of low pressure

0:00:500:00:52

bringing some rain and very strong winds.

0:00:520:00:54

I think wherever you are on Wednesday, eventually,

0:00:540:00:56

it's going to become very windy once again,

0:00:560:00:59

with a mixture of sunshine

0:00:590:01:00

and passing gusty showers,

0:01:000:01:01

and relatively mild again, still -

0:01:010:01:03

15 in London but already colder in Scotland.

0:01:030:01:06

This is a separate area of low pressure -

0:01:060:01:07

this is not Barney, this is low pressure

0:01:070:01:09

that'll bring that windy,

0:01:090:01:11

blustery weather with showers across

0:01:110:01:14

the northern half of the UK in particular.

0:01:140:01:16

As we head into Thursday, once that area

0:01:160:01:18

of low pressure is out of the way,

0:01:180:01:19

look at the change of the wind direction

0:01:190:01:21

across Scotland - it starts to come in

0:01:210:01:23

from the north and that heralds a change

0:01:230:01:25

in our weather to that colder weather

0:01:250:01:27

I just mentioned at the start of the weather report.

0:01:270:01:29

I think, on Thursday, colder across

0:01:290:01:31

the northern half of the UK,

0:01:310:01:33

but just temporarily -

0:01:330:01:34

we are going to see once more some milder,

0:01:340:01:37

wetter and windier weather

0:01:370:01:38

across the south of the UK.

0:01:380:01:40

It really will be just grazing

0:01:400:01:41

the far south of the country.

0:01:410:01:43

You can see the wind and rain

0:01:430:01:45

splashing in from the southwest of England,

0:01:450:01:47

across central southern England,

0:01:470:01:48

into the southeast, but by the time we get

0:01:480:01:50

to the Midlands, northwards, you can see

0:01:500:01:52

how much lower the temperatures are,

0:01:520:01:54

around 6-8 degrees Celsius.

0:01:540:01:55

Then Friday night into Saturday,

0:01:550:01:57

that colder air starts oozing from the north

0:01:570:02:00

and temperatures will start to really take a tumble.

0:02:000:02:04

So, on Saturday, it's a very chilly day,

0:02:040:02:06

also a very windy day.

0:02:060:02:08

You can see a lot of isobars here.

0:02:080:02:09

That means strong winds coming all the way

0:02:090:02:11

from the north and, actually,

0:02:110:02:13

I wouldn't be surprised if there's wintry weather

0:02:130:02:15

across the hills of Scotland

0:02:150:02:17

and also northern England -

0:02:170:02:18

you can see a hint of wintriness there

0:02:180:02:20

across the Pennines.

0:02:200:02:22

It's also the fact that it's going to be

0:02:220:02:24

quite windy that we'll feel so cold.

0:02:240:02:26

You can see 4 degrees there

0:02:260:02:27

for Leeds and Sheffield.

0:02:270:02:29

Only 7 degrees in London,

0:02:290:02:30

a couple of degrees below the average

0:02:300:02:31

for the time of year, and that cold, windy theme

0:02:310:02:34

continues from Saturday into Sunday as well -

0:02:340:02:37

again, a chance of one or two wintry showers.

0:02:370:02:39

The morning will be quite frosty,

0:02:390:02:41

but I think a lot of us on Sunday actually should have

0:02:410:02:43

quite a sunny, crisp, late autumn day,

0:02:430:02:46

but chilly - temperatures in many areas

0:02:460:02:48

will be only around about, say, 5-8 degrees Celsius.

0:02:480:02:52

So, that's Sunday. How about next week?

0:02:520:02:55

Well, high pressure across the Atlantic

0:02:550:02:57

is actually going to shunt

0:02:570:02:59

some milder air in our direction

0:02:590:03:00

once more, because the air goes round

0:03:000:03:02

high pressure like so,

0:03:020:03:03

so the milder air that sits in the Atlantic

0:03:030:03:06

gets sent in our direction

0:03:060:03:08

and it pushes that colder air

0:03:080:03:09

away from the UK back into the continent,

0:03:090:03:13

before another shot of colder air,

0:03:130:03:15

in the wings, is ready to come our way

0:03:150:03:18

quite possibly later in the week,

0:03:180:03:20

so really a lot of chopping and changing

0:03:200:03:22

from milder to colder,

0:03:220:03:23

back to milder and colder weather again,

0:03:230:03:25

as we head over the next five to ten days.

0:03:250:03:29

That's it - bye-bye.

0:03:290:03:30

We're looking for a trap street.

0:03:320:03:33

They're somehow making our eyes skate right over it.

0:03:330:03:36

It's called a misdirection circuit.
