There could be a slightly different look to the weather for the new year.

0:00:030:00:07

We close this year out, though, with yet another storm.

0:00:070:00:10

This area of cloud underwent rapid cyclogenesis, a weather bomb,

0:00:100:00:15

the pressure falling 24 millibars or more in just 24 hours, Storm Frank.

0:00:150:00:20

Because it's a deep area of low pressure, it's being steered

0:00:200:00:23

up towards Iceland, getting the full force of that storm.

0:00:230:00:26

But we've seen the winds picking up and some heavy rain moving in,

0:00:260:00:30

and it's the rain that continues to be the main concern,

0:00:300:00:32

especially for those flood-hit areas already,

0:00:320:00:35

so we have this amber rain warning from the Met Office.

0:00:350:00:38

The warning should expire by the morning across Northern Ireland

0:00:380:00:41

as the rain clears,

0:00:410:00:43

but we'll see those warnings continuing across south-west

0:00:430:00:45

Scotland, north-west England throughout

0:00:450:00:48

the morning as the rain continues.

0:00:480:00:50

The winds will gradually ease as the rain clears slowly towards the east,

0:00:500:00:53

allowing drier weather in the afternoon

0:00:530:00:56

and some showers for Scotland. It'll be drier for Northern Ireland.

0:00:560:00:59

It should eventually turn drier in Wales

0:00:590:01:01

and western parts of England, too.

0:01:010:01:03

That weather front will clear away overnight,

0:01:030:01:06

taking the rain away eventually,

0:01:060:01:08

and then for New Year's Eve we're into something a little different.

0:01:080:01:11

We'll find bands of showers particularly focused on that

0:01:110:01:13

weather front there.

0:01:130:01:15

We start the day generally dry and sunny,

0:01:150:01:17

and eastern areas should have a decent morning.

0:01:170:01:19

We'll see these bands of showers, though, coming into the west,

0:01:190:01:22

sliding across all areas later on in the day.

0:01:220:01:25

The showers are going to be heavy, there'll be some hail and thunder,

0:01:250:01:28

some snow over the hills

0:01:280:01:29

in the north, and here it'll start to feel a little bit colder.

0:01:290:01:33

We've got colder air beginning to

0:01:330:01:34

push in just in time for the clock to strike

0:01:340:01:37

midnight for the start of the new year,

0:01:370:01:39

milder air just getting pushed aside just for a little while.

0:01:390:01:43

But we have another area of low pressure coming our way,

0:01:430:01:46

this one not having the same impact as Storm Frank.

0:01:460:01:49

Indeed, it'll probably stay out to the south-west for a while.

0:01:490:01:53

A brief ridge of high pressure means a lot of dry weather

0:01:530:01:55

and some sunshine for New Year's Day,

0:01:550:01:58

the winds picking up out towards the west and the cloud thickening,

0:01:580:02:01

a little rain not far away for Northern Ireland,

0:02:010:02:04

south-west England by the end of the day.

0:02:040:02:07

So, we've got higher pressure towards the east, low pressure in the west.

0:02:070:02:10

This low pressure is going to become quite slow-moving. Around it,

0:02:100:02:13

there'll be some stronger winds and maybe a south-easterly wind

0:02:130:02:17

picking up across many parts of the UK

0:02:170:02:20

and bands of rain pushing up from the south-west.

0:02:200:02:22

But there's not as much warm air in this, so there won't be as much rain.

0:02:220:02:26

The rain won't be quite as heavy, and it's going to be mainly

0:02:260:02:30

focused on that area of low pressure as it runs northwards across the UK.

0:02:300:02:34

Behind that, another one comes in.

0:02:340:02:36

Notice everything is just a little bit further south.

0:02:360:02:39

The winds are still strong on Sunday, we'll still see some more rain,

0:02:390:02:43

particularly across the south-west of England and South Wales,

0:02:430:02:46

not quite so wet further north.

0:02:460:02:48

So, that's Sunday. Temperatures seven to eleven degrees.

0:02:480:02:52

Throughout most of the week,

0:02:520:02:53

we've had the jet stream in this sort of orientation,

0:02:530:02:55

drawing up some very warm but very wet air on its forward flank,

0:02:550:02:58

which is why we've had so much flooding.

0:02:580:03:01

As we move into the first week of January,

0:03:010:03:05

the jet stream is in a slightly different position.

0:03:050:03:07

It's more zonal, west-east, it's a little bit further south, and

0:03:070:03:11

the jet stream will steer areas of low pressure further south, as well.

0:03:110:03:15

Now, we'll get an undercut of colder air.

0:03:150:03:17

It'll feel a bit colder, as it should do at this time of the year.

0:03:170:03:20

Pressure's a bit higher in the north, it should be a bit drier.

0:03:200:03:23

Most of the rain is nearer the areas of low pressure,

0:03:230:03:26

nearer the southern half of the UK,

0:03:260:03:28

so we're a little different to what we're seeing right now.

0:03:280:03:31

I want futurism,

0:03:330:03:34

but not yesterday's futurism.

0:03:340:03:36

I want today's futurism for tomorrow.

0:03:360:03:38

I want Hollywood glamour and feathers and sequins

0:03:380:03:41

and glitter unicorns!
