Well, thanks for joining me.

0:00:030:00:04

Let's find out how much longer this cold weather is going to last.

0:00:040:00:07

We'll also have a detailed look at the jet stream

0:00:070:00:09

pattern across the UK a couple of times during the weather report.

0:00:090:00:12

This is the here and now, though.

0:00:120:00:13

So, cold weather across many areas of the UK, it's been a very,

0:00:130:00:16

very frosty couple of nights,

0:00:160:00:19

more to come tomorrow during the course of Wednesday.

0:00:190:00:21

Even some freezing fog lingering around,

0:00:210:00:23

for example across the West Midlands, perhaps parts of Wales.

0:00:230:00:26

But for most of us it's going to be a bright,

0:00:260:00:29

crisp day with temperatures around three to four degrees.

0:00:290:00:31

A little bit milder there in Northern Ireland, perhaps seven degrees.

0:00:310:00:35

And then Wednesday night into Thursday,

0:00:350:00:37

another widespread frost across the country,

0:00:370:00:40

some more fog forming, this time across eastern areas,

0:00:400:00:42

and I think that's pretty much it, the following nights will be little

0:00:420:00:46

bit milder, because a change already taking place early Thursday.

0:00:460:00:49

Weather fronts and the milder air here in the Atlantic

0:00:490:00:52

is ready to rush our way,

0:00:520:00:54

so that means that across many western areas

0:00:540:00:56

right from the word go on Thursday, at least the thinking is,

0:00:560:00:59

the clouds will increase, we'll have some light outbreaks of rain.

0:00:590:01:02

Southerly winds. That means that the temperatures might even get up to

0:01:020:01:05

double figures across one or two areas, for example there in Plymouth.

0:01:050:01:08

But the east of the country still hangs onto

0:01:080:01:11

some of that cold air left over. With some sunshine around as well,

0:01:110:01:14

pretty chilly there in Newcastle at three degrees.

0:01:140:01:17

Let's have our first look at the jet stream. For the end of the week.

0:01:170:01:20

You can see it's racing across the Atlantic,

0:01:200:01:22

sending these weather fronts in our direction,

0:01:220:01:25

so the spells of heavy rain, but then it moves towards the north,

0:01:250:01:27

so it's going to deflect most of the wind

0:01:270:01:29

and rain to the north-west of the British Isles.

0:01:290:01:32

But I think all of us, at least on Friday

0:01:320:01:34

while get a dose of some rain from this weather front here.

0:01:340:01:37

Let's have a look at this weather front in a little more detail,

0:01:370:01:40

So here it is in the morning it's crossing the country, it's a

0:01:400:01:43

cold front but the air behind it isn't that cold, it's actually

0:01:430:01:46

relatively mild, look at that, temperatures up to 11 in Belfast,

0:01:460:01:50

12 degrees in Plymouth.

0:01:500:01:51

And this mild bulge of air which is coming out of the southern climes

0:01:510:01:55

here, will establish itself across the UK during the course

0:01:550:01:59

of the weekend, shunting that colder, heavier, denser air towards the east.

0:01:590:02:04

So, through Saturday,

0:02:040:02:06

once one weather front is out of the way, we are in between

0:02:060:02:08

weather systems, and actually Saturday doesn't look too bad.

0:02:080:02:11

There will be some sunshine around particularly across eastern areas

0:02:110:02:14

here. It might be a little bit chilly in the morning

0:02:140:02:17

but probably frost-free for most of us.

0:02:170:02:19

11 degrees across the south

0:02:190:02:21

and then by the time we get to Sunday the weather fronts zip

0:02:210:02:24

to the north-west of us, bringing rain, possibly gale-force winds,

0:02:240:02:27

and look at that, we haven't seen that in a little while,

0:02:270:02:31

13 degrees for Belfast, that is going to feel on the mild side.

0:02:310:02:34

Now, let's talk about the jet stream later next week.

0:02:340:02:37

Because it is a bit of a complicated pattern.

0:02:370:02:40

The basic message is, from a pattern like this,

0:02:400:02:42

and this is the jet stream next week,

0:02:420:02:44

where you see the jet coming from the south, that's where our air is coming

0:02:440:02:47

from, our weather is coming from, this is where the mild air lives.

0:02:470:02:50

But the problem with this jet stream is - it's got quite a sharp dip here

0:02:500:02:53

and then a really enormous ridge there.

0:02:530:02:55

When you get this pattern, the jet stream can sometimes fall apart,

0:02:550:02:59

or at least the pattern falls apart and it can come back on itself

0:02:590:03:02

with the weather coming in from the east.

0:03:020:03:04

So there's just a risk that later next week

0:03:040:03:06

we could see some cold air coming in,

0:03:060:03:09

but it's more likely that the mild air is going to win,

0:03:090:03:12

coming in from the south-west being brought by that jet stream.

0:03:120:03:16

So I think the summary for next week, there'll be some spells of rain

0:03:160:03:19

but also windows of opportunity with some sunshine.

0:03:190:03:22

And generally speaking I think it is going to be frost-free.

0:03:220:03:25

So a change on the way in the next two or three days. Bye-bye.

0:03:250:03:29

It all started with the discovery of one enormous thigh bone.
