21/01/2016 Weather for the Week Ahead

It looks like we're going to say, "goodbye" to the cold weather

for the time being, and milder weather is set to return.

We've been advertising this for days now,

there's no change to the forecast.

The jetstream's ramping up a few notches over the next 24 hours

and it will be sending weather systems in our direction,

meaning increasing winds, thicker cloud, outbreaks of rain,

and much higher temperatures.

The mild air sweeps off the Atlantic.

All the way from the Azores.

For a time it will be chilly across eastern areas.

In fact, first thing in the morning frost in the east,

and even a chance of freezing rain across western parts of Scotland.

But not for very long as this mild air will soon reach many

western areas of the UK strengthening winds.

The far east of the country, for example East Anglia, Lincolnshire

and parts of the Midlands - maybe the North East - still pretty cold.

It's going to take time before this cold air is washed away

by the strengthening winds and the mild conditions off the Atlantic.

As far as Thursday night is concerned,

frost free at least almost all of us.

Maybe a chance of temperatures dipping briefly below freezing

in the extreme east and the southeast of the country.

At the end of the week,

our first weather system for some time sweeping the UK.

Lots of isobars here, so that means stronger winds,

even gale-force for a time on some western coasts.

Here it is, from morning onwards, rain sweeping the UK.

It should be temporary, though.

Will be heavy for a time across north-western parts of the UK

Look at that - the weather clearing up and by the afternoon

there will be some sunshine.

And those temperatures really rocketing, relatively speaking.

12 degrees in Plymouth, Cardiff and Belfast.

The following day,

we see more weather systems sweeping in from the southwest

and this is the pattern that will continue to see for quite some time.

So, let's have a look at Saturday's details.

Subtle difference for England. Quite a big one.

High pressure will briefly build across the UK giving sunshine,

but it won't be long before another weather front

arrives in the southwest bringing more rain.

This pattern continues through Sunday.

Out of the two, Saturday is the better day because on Sunday more

of us will have thicker cloud and outbreaks of rain.

Look, temperatures getting up to the teens

- 13 for Belfast, 13 for Cardiff,

and London and Norwich back into double figures as well.

The only place there is in Shetland

- into single figures.

On Monday, it looks as if another level of low pressure close to the UK

- lots of isobars as well so pretty windy in south-western areas.

Eastern parts of the country may actually get away with some

bright weather, but the west and the southwest certainly will see

strong winds and heavy rain in western Scotland

and parts of Northern Ireland too

Here's the outlook for next week.

The jetstream, we've been having a look at that as well.

That jetstream will send mild weather,

not just here in the UK but into Europe too,

pushing the freezing cold weather all the way eastwards as these

areas swing into north-western parts of Europe.

Look at the temperature contrast by the time we get to Wednesday

next week.

15, 16 - maybe 17 across some parts of the southwest of France.

5 in central Europe.

But, in Russia, in the far west of Russia, it's still freezing cold.

Next week, across the UK, there will be

spells of cloud, rain, winds, but the one thing we'll notice

is how much higher the temperature is going to be.

Cold weather, for now, is not set to return.
