Hello. If you have seen the news in the last couple of days,

0:00:030:00:05

you will know all about the winter snowstorm in the United States.

0:00:050:00:08

It is now clearing away, moving away from eastern Canada as well.

0:00:080:00:11

It is going to cross the Atlantic, yes, it is heading our way.

0:00:110:00:14

But as it crosses the Atlantic, it becomes a different beast.

0:00:140:00:17

It starts to draw in warmth and moisture from the tropics,

0:00:170:00:20

that will warm it up.

0:00:200:00:21

So there is no snow in the forecast for the United Kingdom

0:00:210:00:23

but there is some pretty strong winds and some heavy rainfall to be had.

0:00:230:00:27

As we see that system come in from the Atlantic,

0:00:270:00:29

it draws in milder air with it so we can expect temperatures

0:00:290:00:32

to be a good few degrees above where they should be for this time of year.

0:00:320:00:36

We start Monday on a pretty mild note,

0:00:360:00:38

11 or 12 degrees in the north and west.

0:00:380:00:40

Something of an east-west split,

0:00:400:00:42

with western areas seeing cloud, wind and rain.

0:00:420:00:44

That slowly moves its way eastwards and begins to fizzle out

0:00:440:00:46

but many eastern areas having a reasonable day,

0:00:460:00:49

staying dry for longest in East Anglia and the south-east.

0:00:490:00:51

Probably hanging on to some sunshine, 12 or 13 degrees here.

0:00:510:00:54

It might turn fresher behind this second weather front which

0:00:540:00:56

will bring some rain to Northern Ireland through the afternoon.

0:00:560:00:59

That moves on to western Scotland.

0:00:590:01:01

It crosses northern England through the evening

0:01:010:01:03

and then the skies tend to clear.

0:01:030:01:04

It will turn chilly in comparison with recent nights

0:01:040:01:07

but nothing too untoward. By dawn we are down to five, six, seven degrees

0:01:070:01:12

in towns and cities. A little lower in rural spots.

0:01:120:01:14

But already that big low is beginning to show its hand,

0:01:140:01:17

wet and windy weather pushing in to the north and west.

0:01:170:01:19

Maybe a little snow over high ground for a time

0:01:190:01:21

but Tuesday is all about the strength of the wind

0:01:210:01:23

because it is gales or severe gales in the north and west.

0:01:230:01:26

Some very heavy rainfall, western Scotland

0:01:260:01:28

and the western side of England and Wales.

0:01:280:01:30

In Wales, we really do need to watch those rainfall totals

0:01:300:01:33

because they could be quite large.

0:01:330:01:35

On the face of it, it is a mild day, 12 or 13 degrees but in the wind

0:01:350:01:38

and the rain, not feeling great.

0:01:380:01:40

In the middle of the week, we still have trailing weather fronts across

0:01:400:01:44

the south of the UK, that could be problematic in terms of the rain.

0:01:440:01:47

A little low running its way across the north.

0:01:470:01:50

Another windy day for most parts

0:01:500:01:52

and outbreaks of rain across the south of the UK.

0:01:520:01:54

Some of that could be heavy. Rain in the north as well.

0:01:540:01:56

Again, it is 12 or 13 degrees on the face of it but it is wet

0:01:560:02:00

and it is windy as well.

0:02:000:02:02

It looks pretty windy on into Thursday.

0:02:020:02:05

Lots of isobars still on the chart.

0:02:050:02:06

But the further south and east you are, it is not going to be

0:02:060:02:09

such a bad day, it will be dry and bright for the most part.

0:02:090:02:12

Further north and west, we have this wind and rain moving in.

0:02:120:02:14

So it will be wet and windy once again in western Scotland,

0:02:140:02:17

into Northern Ireland.

0:02:170:02:18

Towards the south-east, it is largely dry and bright.

0:02:180:02:20

Might get 10 degrees out of the day but many other areas

0:02:200:02:23

it's seven, eight or nine.

0:02:230:02:25

Towards the end of the week and there are lots of isobars still

0:02:250:02:28

on the chart. There is this weather front across the north

0:02:280:02:31

and the west of the UK and that'll be bringing more wind and rain with it.

0:02:310:02:35

Western Scotland, Northern Ireland,

0:02:350:02:37

some of that will get into the western side of England and Wales.

0:02:370:02:40

The further south and east you are, it should stay essentially dry

0:02:400:02:43

but it looks rather cloudy by the end of the week.

0:02:430:02:45

So the jet stream is snaking its way across the northern hemisphere

0:02:450:02:50

through this week and on into next weekend.

0:02:500:02:53

It will bring spells of wind and rain with it, sometimes on the cold side

0:02:530:02:56

but I think most of the time will be on the warmer side.

0:02:560:02:59

Into next weekend, it remains quite changeable

0:02:590:03:03

so that means we will see some spells of wind and rain but,

0:03:030:03:06

generally speaking, we are looking at some pretty mild weather.

0:03:060:03:10

So the big pictures sees outbreaks of wind

0:03:100:03:13

and rain across the north and the west of the UK.

0:03:130:03:16

Some of the rain could be quite heavy,

0:03:160:03:18

the winds could be quite strong but towards the south and the east

0:03:180:03:21

and it looks like it should be that bit drier.

0:03:210:03:23

Not completely dry, there will be some rain at times.

0:03:230:03:26

If you need more details, there's plenty more

0:03:260:03:28

on the BBC weather website.
