12/02/2016 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hello, there.

After a reasonably mild and unsettled start to February,

the weather is now feeling quite a bit more wintry

and we've got the cold conditions set to stay with us

for much of the next week to ten days or so.

Let's look at the here and now.

Through Friday, a bit of a cloudier day

than we saw on Thursday.

A chilly start to the morning.

Some showery rain across parts of England,

Wales, Northern Ireland, too.

And for Scotland, some snow.

A few centimetres in the east,

heading further south,

but temperatures around 4-8 degrees -

a little below par for the time of year.

As we head through the latter part of Friday,

we keep that snow across parts of Scotland

in the east, heading its way southwards,

and then this area of rain

working in from the southwest,

the winds picking up as well,

so another chilly start to the weekend.

Saturday will be dominated by a couple of things.

First off, we've got this area of low pressure

heading in from the southwest.

Tight isobars, too,

so a spell of fairly windy weather

for southern counties being combined

with some rain, too.

Winds particularly strong across

areas of the southwest of England

towards the Channel Isles, too.

And to the north of that,

we draw in this cold easterly wind

from the near continent.

Wet weather in the south, pretty chilly here.

Further north, we've got that area

of snow lingering for the east of Scotland.

That could be causing a few problems,

a bit of disruption, as it works its way south

into the northeast of England.

Saturday into Sunday stays pretty cold.

You can see the blue hue returning to the map

and a northerly air flow,

so those northerly winds bringing us

another cold day for many areas on Sunday,

although it is looking a bit quieter.

Snow showers in the north gradually fading,

and the winds and the rain further south

easing away through the day.

Only around 4-8 Celsius.

Through Sunday, and as we look

ahead into the new week,

you can trace those isobars right

up towards the Arctic.

We're going to be keeping that northerly flow

of air through the day on Monday

and that could bring us a few snow flurries

to many eastern areas.

Cloudy here, with outbreaks of rain and snow.

Whereas, further west, that's where we're likely

to see the brighter conditions.

Another chilly-feeling day,

particularly around those eastern coasts.

Then through Tuesday

and the middle part of the week,

we're going to be seeing this

area of high pressure in the Atlantic nudging in,

so a ridge of high pressure in charge

through the day on Tuesday.

That means the northerly winds

should ease a little bit,

not feeling quite as raw,

but still chilly at only 5-8 Celsius.

A lot of dry weather on Tuesday,

but you'll notice that rain creeping in

towards the northwest.

There could be some snow

on the leading edge of that, too.

That weather front just tries to push

in to central parts of the country,

bringing in some snow and rain,

but it looks like it stalls as it bumps

into high pressure across Scandinavia

and high pressure still in charge out

in the Atlantic as well.

With the influence of high pressure,

that weather front looks like it

dies a death through the course

of Wednesday into Thursday.

You can see the mild colours just fading away

and the cold weather, once again,

wins the battle towards the end of the week.

For late next week,

high pressure in the Atlantic,

that's set to dominate things,

but it does look like we'll return to

a north-westerly flow of air,

so weather systems move to the

north of that high pressure

in towards the UK,

bringing some spells of rain and snow,

but it looks like

it will be the north-western

half of the country

that will see the windier conditions,

with blustery showers

of rain and snow, too,

whereas further south and east,

still cold, remaining drier

and less breezy.

One thing's for sure -

it is going to be staying pretty

chilly in the outlook period.

We'll see periods of rain at times

and also a little hill snow as well,

and becoming breezy as we head

towards the end of the period.
